Support for host mobility an essential and necessary feature for roaming users who connect to wireless networks via access points. Access points may have different capabilities, be connected to different networks and be installed by different providers. A mobile host will discover multiple access points in this environment. In such an environment, a mobile host should be able to use the best available connection to communicate with a correspondent host and perhaps use multiple connections for different hosts. In areas with wireless local area network access, pockets with limited or no coverage could exist. Such restricted connectivity could be compensated by neighbor hosts who form an ad hoc network and relay packets until they reach an access point. This paper describes and discusses a proposed solution towards enabling and supporting connectivity in wireless networks. In the proposed solution the network layer software will evaluate and decide which wireless network connections to use. A Running Variance Metric (RVM) and a Relative Network Load(RNL) are used to measure the traffic load of access points in wireless access networks. RVM and RNL can be efficiently used for both infrastructure networks and ad hoc networks. Multihomed Mobile IP (M-MIP) is an extension of Mobile IP that enables mobile hosts to use multiple care-of addresses simultaneously. The extension enhances network connectivity by enabling the mobile host, the home agent and correspondent hosts to evaluate and select the best connection. A proposed gateway architecture using M-MIP that integrates wired IP networks with ad hoc networks is described. The M-MIP and gateway architecture using the RVM and RNL metrics have been validated with simulation studies and results are presented.  相似文献

Multihop sensor network design for wide-band communications   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper presents a master/slave cellular-based mobile ad hoc network architecture for multihop multimedia communications. The proposed network is based on a new paradigm for solving the problem of cluster-based ad hoc routing when utilizing existing wireless local area network (WLAN) technologies. The network architecture is a mixture of two different types of networks: infrastructure (master-and-slave) and ad hoc. In this architecture, the participating slave nodes (SNs) in each cluster communicate with each other via their respective master nodes (MNs) in an infrastructure network. In contrast to traditional cellular networks where the base stations are fixed (e.g., interconnected via a wired backbone), in this network the MNs (e.g., base stations) are mobile; thus, interconnection is accomplished dynamically and in an ad hoc manner. For network implementation, the IEEE 802.11 WLAN has been deployed. Since there is no stationary node in this network, all the nodes in a cluster may have to move together as a group. However, in order to allow a mobile node to move to another cluster, which requires changing its point of attachment, a handoff process utilizing Mobile IP version 6 (IPv6) has been considered. For ad hoc routing between the master nodes (i.e., MNs), the Ad hoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV) Routing protocol has been deployed. In assessing the network performance, field test trials have been carried out to measure the proposed network performance. These measurements include packet loss, delays under various test conditions such as a change of ad hoc route, handoffs, etc.  相似文献

The low-cost of packet-based networking technologies with respect to traditional circuit-switched ones and the reliability of the current (wired) IP networks have brought to a considerable employment of the VoIP (Voice over IP) technologies in the voice services market. This success is expected to happen also in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs), which may offer a good platform for the fast deployment of VoIP mobile networks. However, efforts must be made to improve performance before MANETs can be used for this purpose. One of the main limitations is related to the highly variability of the network topology and channel behavior, which heavily influences the service quality due to route losses and significant delay variations. In this paper, we propose a strategy where these impairments are jointly addressed. The source is responsible for jointly selecting the transmission paths and adjusting the playout delay, with an adaptive inter-talkspurt approach. These tasks are accomplished on the basis of historical data on network connectivity and transmission delays, and are driven by a quality-based approach. The collection of statistics of the network status relies on the QOLSR routing algorithm, whereas the voice quality is measured by means of the ITU-T E-Model.  相似文献

Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) are a very promising technology to provide an easily deployable and cost-efficient solution for access to packet-based services for metropolitan areas with high population densities. Thus, WMNs may be a key technology in future 4G wireless networks and are currently becoming attractive in situations where it is not convenient to deploy wired backhaul connectivity. For example, it is often impractical to deploy wired infrastructure cost effectively or under tight time constraints. This is particularly true if the deployment is only transient in nature. Another key feature of WMNs is that unlike wireless multihop relay networks, WMNs are not restricted to tree-shaped topologies rooted at the gateway to the wired network and hence do not suffer from the same performance bottlenecks. Instead, any mesh node may communicate with any other one over multiple paths, allowing more efficient utilization of network resources. In contrast to ad hoc networks, WMNs are operated by a single entity, and their components have far fewer restrictions in terms of energy, resilience, and processing power.  相似文献

Integration of ad hoc networks with the Internet provides global Internet connectivity for ad hoc hosts through the coordination of mobile IP and ad hoc protocols. In a pure ad hoc network, it is difficult to establish trust relationship between two ad hoc hosts due to lack of infrastructure or centralized administration. In this paper, an infrastructure‐supported and distributed authentication protocol is proposed to enhance trust relationships amongst ad hoc hosts. In addition, an effective secure routing protocol (SRP) is discussed to protect the multi‐hop route for Internet and ad hoc communication. In the integrated ad hoc networks with Internet accessibility, the ad hoc routing security deployed with the help of infrastructure has a fundamental impact on ad hoc hosts in term of Internet access, integrity, and authentication. Both analysis and simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed security protocol. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

An adaptive management architecture for ad hoc networks   总被引:13,自引:0,他引:13
Ad hoc networks, where mobile nodes communicate via multihop wireless links, facilitate network connectivity without the aid of any preexisting networking infrastructure. The intrinsic attributes of ad hoc networks, such as dynamic network topology, limited battery power, constrained wireless bandwidth and quality, and large number of heterogeneous nodes, make network management significantly more challenging than stationary and wired networks. In particular, the conventional client/server-based manager/agent management paradigm falls short of addressing these issues. We describe the Guerrilla management architecture to facilitate adaptive and autonomous management of ad hoc networks. The management capability of Guerrilla is scalable to accommodate the sheer number and heterogeneity of nodes, autonomous and survivable to adapt to network dynamics, and economical to minimize management overhead.  相似文献

A mobile ad hoc network does not require fixed infrastructure to construct connections among nodes. Due to the particular characteristics of mobile ad hoc networks, most existing secure protocols in wired networks do not meet the security requirements for mobile ad hoc networks. Most secure protocols in mobile ad hoc networks, such as secure routing, key agreement and secure group communication protocols, assume that all nodes must have pre‐shared a secret, or pre‐obtained public‐key certificates before joining the network. However, this assumption has a practical weakness for some emergency applications, because some nodes without pre‐obtained certificates will be unable to join the network. In this paper, a heterogeneous‐network aided public‐key management scheme for mobile ad hoc networks is proposed to remedy this weakness. Several heterogeneous networks (such as satellite, unmanned aerial vehicle, or cellular networks) provide wider service areas and ubiquitous connectivity. We adopt these wide‐covered heterogeneous networks to design a secure certificate distribution scheme that allows a mobile node without a pre‐obtained certificate to instantly get a certificate using the communication channel constructed by these wide‐covered heterogeneous networks. Therefore, this scheme enhances the security infrastructure of public key management for mobile ad hoc networks.

Transport protocol design for supporting multimedia streaming in mobile ad hoc networks is challenging because of unique issues, including mobility-induced disconnection, reconnection, and high out-of-order delivery ratios; channel errors and network congestion. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of a transmission control protocol (TCP)-friendly transport protocol for ad hoc networks. Our key design novelty is to perform multimetric joint identification for packet and connection behaviors based on end-to-end measurements. Our NS-2 simulations show significant performance improvement over wired TCP friendly congestion control and TCP with explicit-link-failure-notification support in ad hoc networks.  相似文献

In the past few years, Internet has raised increasing interest in various areas including research, education, and business. The number of people accessing the Internet at work or at home has increased considerably, just like the number of services offered (email, e-commerce, search engines, e-learning, e-government, etc.). Ad hoc networks were generally viewed as stand-alone networks, where communications are only supported between nodes in the network such as in military and rescue operations. The lack of connectivity to the wired infrastructure enables simple management and deployment, but limits the applicability of ad hoc networks to today’s scenarios, which require connectivity outside the ad hoc network and particularly to the Internet. However, to reach this goal, a number of problems need to be resolved because of the dynamic nature of such environment. In this article, we describe a new solution for dynamic gateway selection based on quality of service (QoS) criteria. The underlying architecture is based on a pro-active routing protocol.  相似文献

Power-aware routing protocols in ad hoc wireless networks   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
An ad hoc wireless network has no fixed networking infrastructure. It consists of multiple, possibly mobile, nodes that maintain network connectivity through wireless communications. Such a network has practical applications in areas where it may not be economically practical or physically possible to provide a conventional networking infrastructure. The nodes in an ad hoc wireless network are typically powered by batteries with a limited energy supply. One of the most important and challenging issues in ad hoc wireless networks is how to conserve energy, maximizing the lifetime of its nodes and thus of the network itself. Since routing is an essential function in these networks, developing power-aware routing protocols for ad hoc wireless networks has been an intensive research area in recent years. As a result, many power-aware routing protocols have been proposed from a variety of perspectives. This article surveys the current state of power-aware routing protocols in ad hoc wireless networks.  相似文献

A MAC protocol for a wireless LAN based on OFDM-CDMA   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Local access encompasses requirements of high throughput, transfer performance, flexibility, and ease of user/terminal mobility at a relatively low cost. While some of these targets can often be met satisfactorily with wired infrastructures, it is getting increasingly popular to resort to wireless access (wireless LAN), mainly because of its simpler deployment, continuous coverage, availability of ad hoc connectivity, and user/terminal mobility support. This article outlines the proposal of a broadband quality-oriented WLAN system. The basic system characteristics are described, with details given on a MAC protocol supporting IP and exploiting an OFDM-CDMA technique  相似文献

The IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol is the standard for wireless LANs; it is widely used in testbeds and simulations for wireless multihop ad hoc networks. However, this protocol was not designed for multihop networks. Although it can support some ad hoc network architecture, it is not intended to support the wireless mobile ad hoc network, in which multihop connectivity is one of the most prominent features. In this article we focus on the following question: can the IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol function well in multihop networks? By presenting several serious problems encountered in an IEEE 802.11-based multihop network and revealing the in-depth cause of these problems, we conclude that the current version of this wireless LAN protocol does not function well in multihop ad hoc networks. We thus doubt whether the WaveLAN-based system is workable as a mobile ad hoc testbed  相似文献

In hybrid ad hoc networks, mobile nodes can communicate not only with each other in a self-organizing manner, but also with nodes on wired networks for extensive information retrieval and dissemination. In this article we consider efficient routing operations between any two nodes in an ad hoc network that is linked to wired networks by an access point. To build routes with low routing overhead efficiently, we develop a new routing scheme of region-based routing (RBR), which utilizes hop counts between mobile nodes and the access point to localize a route discovery within a limited topological region. Limiting the region of route discovery results in fewer routing messages and therefore reduces routing overhead. Simulation results show that the RBR scheme greatly reduces routing overhead while preserving a high rate of success for route discovery to the destination  相似文献

The fact that a lot of applications require secure communication to take place only between a dynamic subset of distributed devices sharing a common context, is, from a network point of view, very challenging and demanding. Existing technologies such as VPN, P2P overlays or VLANs can only partially respond to these requirements. This observation is the key factor that has driven the proposal of the virtual private ad hoc network concept. Virtual private ad hoc networks (VPAN) are secure and self-organizing overlay networks on top of existing IP infrastructure that use ad hoc networking techniques to enable network connectivity. The underlying IP infrastructure can be the Internet, cellular networks, ad hoc networks, mesh networks … or combinations thereof. A virtual private ad hoc overlay network creates a transparent, shielded and trusted environment for the applications and services running on the participants' devices. The overlay uses internal addressing and ad hoc routing, thereby forming a virtual network on top of the physical infrastructure. In addition, the overlay must be self-organizing and self-maintaining upon member mobility or membership changes. This paper gives an overview of the potential applications, a high-level network architecture and the network challenges emerging from the novel concept of virtual private ad hoc networking. A lightweight stateful address autoconfiguration for 6LoWPAN   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Sensor networks have become increasingly important in various areas, and most current applications require connectivity between sensor networks and the Internet. By being seamlessly integrated into IP network infrastructure, sensor network applications would benefit from standardized and established technology, as well as from the plethora of readily available applications. Preparing sensor networks for IP communication and integrating them into the IP network, however, present new challenges on the architecture and its functional blocks, e.g., the adaptation of the respective link technology for IP support, development of security mechanisms, and autoconfiguration to support ad hoc deployment. In this paper, we focus on the IPv6 address autoconfiguration issue and propose a proxy-based autoconfiguration protocol. The proposed protocol guarantees the assignment of a unique address to each node in the network. The protocol is simulated and implemented on off-the-shelf sensor network platforms. The experiment results show that our mechanism outperforms similar network address configuring mechanisms in terms of latency and overhead.  相似文献

Internet Connectivity for Ad Hoc Mobile Networks   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
The growing deployment rate of wireless LANs indicates that wireless networking is rapidly becoming a prevalent form of communication. As users become more accustomed to the use of mobile devices, they increasingly want the additional benefit of roaming. The Mobile IP protocol has been developed as a solution for allowing users to roam outside of their home networks while still retaining network connectivity. The problem with this solution, however, is that the deployment of foreign agents is expensive because their coverage areas are limited due to fading and interference. To reduce the number of foreign agents needed while still maintaining the same coverage, ad hoc network functionality can cooperate with Mobile IP such that multihop routes between mobile nodes and foreign agents can be utilized. In this work, we present a method for enabling the cooperation of Mobile IP and the Ad hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (AODV) routing protocol, such that mobile nodes that are not within direct transmission range of a foreign agent can still obtain Internet connectivity. In addition, we describe how duplicate address detection can be used in these networks to obtain a unique co-located care-of address when a foreign agent is not available.  相似文献

Named Data Networking (NDN), an emerging communication model in the content centric networks, has recently presented a solid framework for the future Internet. The NDN exploits content name instead of host name (IP address) and content caching. These features make NDN particularly efficient in networks with intermittent connectivity and dynamic topologies such as mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). Due to the structure of NDN nodes, design of forwarding strategies has a vital impact on the network performance. In this paper, we propose a new forwarding strategy: redundancy elimination forwarding (REF). In REF, the NDN node structure and the operation of the data structures are modified. These modifications improve network performance in terms of throughput, overhead and resource requirements. REF strategy is simulated in different scenarios based on ndnSIM and the results demonstrate that it provides robust performance for various environments.

IP telephony over mobile ad hoc networks is a topic of emerging interest in the research arena as one of the paths toward the fixed-mobile convergence in telecommunications networks. To investigate the performance characteristics of this service, we propose a complete system architecture, which includes a MAC protocol, a routing protocol, and the treatment of voice packets. The telephone system is analyzed in the case of point-to-point calls inside the ad hoc network, and the end-to-end performance is assessed in terms of the percentage of blocked and dropped calls, packet loss and packet delay. The analysis takes into account network scalability by investigating how; the size of the multihop ad hoc network impacts the quality of service. Moreover, the synthetic mean opinion score of the telephone service is evaluated according to the ITU-T E-model.  相似文献
