England's Town Development Act: 1952: PART I: Background of the Act

The land use model recasts an unsuccessful urban form of the past. Concentric rings of declining land value begin at the intense, historic center and grade down through concentric rings to become the city plan. Little planning remains after such a model is accepted. The new freedom of the auto-age city is lost to the principle of a falling body. Further, the land use model plan restricts mobility of resident and employer by type, each to his ring Urban land value patterns are sustained by public action or inaction. A true city plan musters this power to form the best possible city.

Graduate studies at America's largest school of architecture, here described and discussed by Mr Williams, who heads graduate architectural design at Urbana, are based upon a faith in the liberal view, finding expression in a free but disciplined approach and acknowledging competition as a fact of life. Previous articles in the series appeared in September 1963 (by Joseph Esherick, Sami Hassid and Charles Moore of the University of California) and in September 1964 (by G. Holmes Perkins of Pennsyvania).     

Organizations: IIED: a network of institutions

The Human Settlements Programme of the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) arose out of the Institute's involvement in Habitat, the United Nations Conference on Human Settlements in Vancouver in 1976. Before the conference, the Canadian government had invited the Institute's President, Barbara Ward,¹ to write a popular book on the issues the conference should be tackling and this was published just before the conference as The Home of Man.²While various IIED members took part both in the official conference and in the non-government ‘Habitat Forum’, it was through Canadian government support after the conference that a Human Settlements Programme was started.³ This article is the first in a series of reports from settlements- and urban-related organizations.     

New Generation Microcomputers: Part I: 80386 Machines

This article presents a review of new generation microcomputers using the Intel 32-bit 80386 processor. They include ISM PSI2 Model 80, Compaq Deskpro 386, Kaypro 386, ALR Access 386, and Tandy 4000. Some of the powerful 16-bit 80286-based machines introduced into the market recently are also reviewed. They include the IBM PS/2 Models 50 and 60 and Compaq Portable III.     

Research information: Innovation awards: a case study

Vincent Cousin, Corporate R&D Vice-president of GTM Group, discusses the development of an award programme and management tool within a large, diverse, decentralized architectural and engineering construction company. This award programme successfully encourages a wide range of employees to suggest and implement innovation, captures the innovation and knowledge gained from project based work, disseminates the work within the large decentralized company for further exploitation, changes the culture and values of company and provides employees with a larger sense of participation and stakeholding.     

Immersed tunnel settlements: Part 2: case histories

This paper consists in a compilation of settlement data and related construction methods for various immersed tunnels taken from papers previously published for either specific projects or on the subject in general. Where information was available, discussion regarding general pertinent geotechnical, construction, or environmental conditions is summarized as background for the reader's evaluation of the various settlement data provided.     

下坡步态失稳后的自适应平衡分析——坡度i=1∶10

以人下坡行走过程中偶发的滑跌现象为研究对象,采用表面肌电分析法,探究人下坡失稳后的自主平衡恢复反应机理。选取10名健康男性在坡度为1︰10的坡道上进行湿滑介质油和干燥环境下的下坡行走试验,采用Vicon运动捕捉系统和表面肌电系统同步采集步态参数和下肢8块主要肌肉的肌电信号,得出步速和步态时间的显著性p值分别为0.000、0.025(<0.05),故受到滑移扰动后,步速显著增加,步态时间显著减小;左右两侧肌肉的收缩特性在第一双支撑相和单支撑相无明显变化,在第二双支撑相和摆动相显著增加。依此总结出在坡度为1∶10的坡道环境下,一个步态周期各个时相内双足机器人下肢左右侧施加控制力的位置、施力大小及作用时间。该试验结果可为康复工程提供理论基础,并指导双足机器人的平衡控制系统设计。
