Batch biosorption experiments were carried out for the removal of methylene blue, a basic dye, from aqueous solution using raw Posidonia oceanica (L.) fibres, a marine lignocellulosic biomass. A series of assays were undertaken to assess the effect of the system variables, i.e. contact time, solution pH, biosorbent dosage and initial dye concentration. The results had showed that biosorption capacity was optimal using 6-9 solution pH range and by increasing the biosorbent concentration up to 1 g/L. The biosorption kinetics were analyzed using irreversible-first-order, reversible-first-order and pseudo-second-order and the sorption data were very well described by the pseudo-second-order model for the entire adsorption time with squared correlation coefficients equal to unity for all experimented initial dye concentrations. Besides, equilibrium data were very well represented by both Langmuir and Redlich-Peterson isotherm models followed by Freundlich, which confirm the monolayer coverage of methylene blue molecules onto P. oceanica fibres.  相似文献

Adsorptive removal of methylene blue by tea waste   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The potentiality of tea waste for the adsorptive removal of methylene blue, a cationic dye, from aqueous solution was studied. Batch kinetics and isotherm studies were carried out under varying experimental conditions of contact time, initial methylene blue concentration, adsorbent dosage and pH. The nature of the possible adsorbent and methylene blue interactions was examined by the FTIR technique. The pH(pzc) of the adsorbent was estimated by titration method and a value of 4.3+/-0.2 was obtained. An adsorption-desorption study was carried out resulting the mechanism of adsorption was reversible and ion-exchange. Adsorption equilibrium of tea waste reached within 5h for methylene blue concentrations of 20-50mg/L. The sorption was analyzed using pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second order kinetic models and the sorption kinetics was found to follow a pseudo-second order kinetic model. The extent of the dye removal increased with increasing initial dye concentration. The equilibrium data in aqueous solutions were well represented by the Langmuir isotherm model. The adsorption capacity of methylene blue onto tea waste was found to be as high as 85.16mg/g, which is several folds higher than the adsorption capacity of a number of recently studied in the literature potential adsorbents. Tea waste appears as a very prospective adsorbent for the removal of methylene blue from aqueous solution.  相似文献

The adsorption kinetics of methylene blue (MB) on the hazelnut shell with respect to the initial dye concentration, pH, ionic strength, particle size and temperature were investigated. The rate and the transport/kinetic processes of MB adsorption were described by applying the first-order Lagergren, the pseudo-second-order, mass transfer coefficient and the intraparticle diffusion models. Kinetic studies showed that the kinetic data were well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Significant increases in initial adsorption rate were observed with the increase in temperature followed by pH and initial MB concentration. The intraparticle diffusion was found to be the rate-limiting step in the adsorption process. Adsorption activation energy was calculated to be 45.6kJmol(-1). The values of activation parameters such as free energy (DeltaG(*)), enthalpy (DeltaH(*)) and entropy (DeltaS(*)) were also determined as 83.4kJmol(-1), 42.9kJmol(-1) and -133.5Jmol(-1)K(-1), respectively.  相似文献

Kinetics and mechanism of removal of methylene blue by adsorption onto perlite   总被引:12,自引:0,他引:12
The kinetics and mechanism of methylene blue adsorption on perlite have been studied. The effects of various experimental parameters, such as initial dye concentration, temperature and pH on the adsorption rate were investigated. Adsorption measurements show that the process is very fast and physical in nature. The extent of the dye removal increased with increase in the initial concentration of the dye and the initial pH and temperature of solution. Adsorption data were modelled using the first and second-order kinetic equations, mass transfer and intra-particle diffusion models. It was shown that the second-order kinetic equation could best describe the sorption kinetics. The diffusion coefficient, D, was found to increase when the initial dye concentration, pH and temperature were raised. Thermodynamic activation parameters, such as DeltaG*, DeltaS* and DeltaH*, were calculated.  相似文献

In this paper, the ability of coconut bunch waste (CBW), an agricultural waste available in large quantity in Malaysia, to remove basic dye (methylene blue) from aqueous solution by adsorption was studied. Batch mode experiments were conducted at 30 degrees C to study the effects of pH and initial concentration of methylene blue (MB). Equilibrium adsorption isotherms and kinetics were investigated. The experimental data were analyzed by the Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin models of adsorption. The adsorption isotherm data were fitted well to Langmuir isotherm and the monolayer adsorption capacity was found to be 70.92 mg/g at 30 degrees C. The kinetic data obtained at different concentrations have been analyzed using a pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order equation and intraparticle diffusion equation. The experimental data fitted very well the pseudo-second-order kinetic model.  相似文献

Batch experiments were carried out for the sorption of methylene blue onto Paspalum notatum. The operating variables studied were initial dye concentration, initial solution pH, adsorbent dosage and contact time. Experimental equilibrium data were fitted to Freundlich, Langmuir and Redlich-Peterson isotherms by non-linear regression method. Six error functions was used to determine the optimum isotherm by non-linear regression method. The present study shows r2 as the best error function to determine the parameters involved in both two- and three-parameter isotherms. Langmuir isotherm was found to be the optimum isotherm for methylene blue onto P. notatum. The monolayer methylene blue sorption capacity of P. notatum was found to be 31 mg/g. The kinetics of methylene blue onto P. notatum was found to follow a pseudo second order kinetics. A Boyd plot confirms the external mass transfer as the rate-limiting step in the dye sorption process. The influence of initial dye concentration on the dye sorption process was represented in the form of dimensionless mass transfer numbers (Sh/Sc0.33) and was found to vary as C(0)-5x10(-6).  相似文献

The use of cheap, high efficiency and ecofriendly adsorbent has been studied as an alternative source of activated carbon for the removal of dyes from wastewater. This study investigates the use of activated carbons prepared from pomegranate peel for the removal of direct blue dye from aqueous solution. A series of experiments were conducted in a batch system to assess the effect of the system variables, i.e. initial pH, temperature, initial dye concentration adsorbent dosage and contact time. The results showed that the adsorption of direct blue dye was maximal at pH 2, as the amount of adsorbent increased, the percentage of dye removal increased accordingly but it decreased with the increase in initial dye concentration and solution temperature. The adsorption kinetics was found to follow pseudo-second-order rate kinetic model, with a good correlation (R(2)>0.99) and intra-particle diffusion as one of the rate determining steps. Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Dubinin-RadushKevich (D-R) and Harkins-Jura isotherms were used to analyze the equilibrium data at different temperatures. In addition, various thermodynamic parameters, such as standard Gibbs free energy (DeltaG degrees ), standard enthalpy (DeltaH degrees ), standard entropy (DeltaS degrees ), and the activation energy (E(a)) have been calculated. The adsorption process of direct blue dye onto different activated carbons prepared from pomegranate peel was found to be spontaneous and exothermic process. The findings of this investigation suggest that the physical sorption plays a role in controlling the sorption rate.  相似文献

This study aimed at investigating the feasibility of using jackfruit peel (JFP), a solid waste, abundantly available in Malaysia, for the adsorption of methylene blue, a cationic dye. Batch adsorption studies were conducted to evaluate the effects of contact time, initial concentration (35-400mg/L), pH (2-11), and adsorbent dose (0.05-1.20g) on the removal of dye at temperature of 30 degrees C. The experimental data were analyzed by the four different types of linearized Langmuir isotherm, the Freundlich isotherm and the Temkin isotherm. The experimental data fitted well with the type 2 Langmuir model with a maximum adsorption capacity of 285.713mg/g. Pseudo-first and pseudo-second-order kinetics models were tested with the experimental data, and pseudo-second-order kinetics was the best for the adsorption of MB by JFP with coefficients of correlation R(2)> or =0.9967 for all initial MB concentrations studied. The results demonstrated that the JFP is very effective for the adsorption of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions.  相似文献

The adsorption kinetics of a cationic dye, methylene blue (MB), onto the silica nano-sheets derived from vermiculite via acid leaching was investigated in aqueous solution in a batch system with respect to contact time, initial dye concentration, pH, and temperature. Experimental results have shown that increasing initial dye concentration favors the adsorption while the acidic pH and temperature go against the adsorption. Experimental data related to the adsorption of MB on the silica nano-sheets under different conditions were applied to the pseudo-first-order equation, the pseudo-second-order equation and the intraparticle diffusion equation, and the rate constants of first-order adsorption (k(1)), the rate constants of second-order adsorption (k(2)) and intraparticle diffusion rate constants (k(int)) were calculated, respectively. The experimental data fitted very well the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The activation energy of system (E(a)) was calculated as 3.42 kJ/mol. The thermodynamics parameters of activation such as Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, entropy were also evaluated and found that DeltaG*, DeltaH*, and DeltaS* are 65.95 (71.63, 77.45)kJ/mol, 0.984 (0.776, 0.568)kJ/mol, and -0.222 (-0.223, -0.224)kJ/(Kmol) at 20 (45, 70) degrees C, respectively. The desorption of the dye on the silica nano-sheets using ethanol was also investigated primarily.  相似文献

In the present study, spent tea leaves (STL) were used as a new non-conventional and low-cost adsorbent for the cationic dye (methylene blue) adsorption in a batch process at 30 degrees C. Equilibrium sorption isotherms and kinetics were investigated. The experimental data were analyzed by the Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin models of adsorption. The adsorption isotherm data were fitted well to the Langmuir isotherm and the monolayer adsorption capacity was found to be 300.052mg/g at 30 degrees C. The kinetic data obtained at different initial concentrations were analyzed using pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order and intraparticle diffusion equations. The results revealed that the spent tea leaves, being waste, have the potential to be used as a low-cost adsorbent for the removal of methylene blue from aqueous solutions.  相似文献

The adsorption of cationic dye (i.e., methylene blue) onto acid-activated andesite in aqueous solution was studied in a batch system with respect to its kinetics as a function of agitation speed, initial adsorbate concentration, pH, and adsorbent mass. It was found that the resulting acid-activated adsorbent possessed a mesoporous structure with BET surface areas at around 60m(2)/g. The surface characterization of acid-activated andesite was also performed using the zeta-potential measurements, indicating that the charge sign on the surface of the andesite should be negative in a wide pH range (i.e., 3-11). Furthermore, a simplified kinetic model, pseudo-second-order, was tested to investigate the adsorption behaviors of methylene blue onto the clay samples treated under different process conditions. It was found that the adsorption process could be well described with the model. The adsorption capacity parameter of the model obtained in the present work was significantly in line with the process parameters.  相似文献

Adsorption isotherm and kinetics of methylene blue on activated carbon prepared from coconut husk were determined from batch tests. The effects of contact time (1-30 h), initial dye concentration (50-500 mg/l) and solution temperature (30-50 degrees C) were investigated. Equilibrium data were fitted to Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm models. The equilibrium data were best represented by Langmuir isotherm model, showing maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 434.78 mg/g. The kinetic data were fitted to pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order and intraparticle diffusion models, and was found to follow closely the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Thermodynamic parameters such as standard enthalpy (DeltaH degrees), standard entropy (DeltaS degrees) and standard free energy (DeltaG degrees) were evaluated. The adsorption interaction was found to be exothermic in nature. Coconut husk-based activated carbon was shown to be a promising adsorbent for removal of methylene blue from aqueous solutions.  相似文献

The feasibility of using papaya seeds (PS), abundantly available waste in Malaysia, for the cationic dye (methylene blue) adsorption has been investigated. Batch adsorption studies were conducted to study the effects of contact time, initial concentration (50-360 mg/L), pH (3-10) and adsorbent dose (0.05-1.00 g) on the removal of methylene blue (MB) at temperature of 30 degrees C. The equilibrium data were analyzed by the Langmuir, the Freundlich and the Temkin isotherms. The data fitted well with the Langmuir model with a maximum adsorption capacity of 555.557 mg/g. The pseudo-second-order kinetics was the best for the adsorption of MB by PS with good correlation. The results demonstrated that the PS is very effective to remove methylene blue from aqueous solutions.  相似文献

Raw Kaolinite clay obtained Ubulu-Ukwu, Delta State of Nigeria and its sodium tetraborate (NTB)-modified analogue was used to adsorb Aniline blue dye. Fourier transformed infrared spectra of NTB-modified Kaolinite suggests that modification was effective on the surface of the Kaolinite clay with the strong presence of inner -OH functional group. The modification of Kaolinite clay raised its adsorption capacity from 1666 to 2000 mg/kg. Modeling adsorption data obtained from both unmodified and NTB-modified Kaolinite clay reveals that the adsorption of Aniline blue dye on unmodified Kaolinite clay is on heterogeneous adsorption sites because it followed strongly the Freundlich isotherm equation model while adsorption data from NTB-modified Kaolinite clay followed strongly the Langmuir isotherm equation model which suggest that Aniline blue dye was adsorb homogeneous adsorption sites on the NTB-modified adsorbent surface. There was an observed increase in the amount of Aniline blue adsorbed as initial dye concentration was increased from 10 to 30 mg/L. It was observed that kinetic data obtained generally gave better robust fit to the second-order kinetic model (SOM). The initial sorption rate was found to increased with increasing initial dye concentration (from 10 to 20 mg/L) for data obtained from 909 to 1111 mg kg(-1)min(-1) for unmodified and 3325-5000 mg kg(-1) min(-1) for NTB-modified adsorbents. Thereafter there was a decrease in initial sorption rate with further increase in dye concentration. The linearity of the plots of the pseudo-second-order model with very high-correlation coefficients indicates that chemisorption is involved in the adsorption process. From the design of a single-batch adsorber it is predicted that the NTB-modified Kaolinite clay adsorbent will require 50% less of the adsorbent to treat certain volumes of wastewater containing 30 mg/L of Aniline blue dye when it is compared with the unmodified adsorbent. This will be cost effective in the use of NTB-modified adsorbent for the adsorption of Aniline blue dye from water and wastewater.  相似文献

In this paper, broad bean peels (BBP), an agricultural waste, was evaluated for its ability to remove cationic dye (methylene blue) from aqueous solutions. Batch mode experiments were conducted at 30 degrees C. Equilibrium sorption isotherms and kinetics were investigated. The kinetic data obtained at different concentrations have been analyzed using pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order and intraparticle diffusion equations. The experimental data fitted very well the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. Analysis of the temportal change of q indicates that at the beginning of the process the overall rate of adsorption is controlled by film-diffusion, then at later stage intraparticle-diffusion controls the rate. Diffusion coefficients and times of transition from film to pore-diffusion control were estimated by piecewise linear regression. The experimental data were analyzed by the Langmuir and Freundlich models. The sorption isotherm data fitted well to Langmuir isotherm and the monolayer adsorption capacity was found to be 192.7 mg/g and the equilibrium adsorption constant Ka is 0.07145 l/mg at 30 degrees C. The results revealed that BBP was a promising sorbent for the removal of methylene blue from aqueous solutions.  相似文献

The adsorption of rhodamine B dye was carried out using sodium montmorillonite clay. The effect of parameters such as pH, adsorbent dosage and initial dye concentration was studied. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were applied and the Langmuir model was found to best fit the equilibrium isotherm data. Langmuir adsorption capacity was found to be 42.19 mg/g. Kinetic data followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. Maximum color removal was observed at pH 7.0. The ΔG° value was found to be negative, the adsorption process was feasible. The results indicate that sodium montmorillonite clay can be used for the removal of basic dyes from aqueous solutions.  相似文献

Nanoparticles of TiO2 were synthesized and characterized by XRD, BET, TG/DTA and TEM measurements. The commercial azo dye Reactive Red 195 (RR195) was selected as a model dye in order to examine the adsorption capacity of TiO2 at room temperature, under dark conditions. It was demonstrated that RR195 could be efficiently adsorbed in aqueous suspension of TiO2. A study on the effects of various parameters like initial pH, concentration of dye and concentration of adsorbent has been carried out in order to find optimum adsorption conditions. The optimum pH of sorption was 3. Substantial reduction of COD, besides removal of colour, was also achieved. The experimental data were analyzed by the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models. Equilibrium data fitted very well with the Langmuir model signifying the energetic homogeneity of TiO2 surface adsorption sites. At the temperature of 30 °C, the maximum monolayer adsorption capacity obtained from the Langmuir model is 87 mg/g (pH 3.0). Kinetic studies were carried out and showed a rapid sorption of dye in the first 30 min while equilibrium was reached at 1 h. Three kinetic adsorption models were used to describe the kinetics data, the pseudo-first-order model, the pseudo-second-order model and the intraparticle diffusion model. The sorption kinetics of dye was best described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model.  相似文献

Batch sorption experiments were carried out using a novel adsorbent, guava leaf powder (GLP), for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions. Potential of GLP for adsorption of MB from aqueous solution was found to be excellent. Effects of process parameters pH, adsorbent dosage, concentration, particle size and temperature were studied. Temperature-concentration interaction effect on dye uptake was studied and a quadratic model was proposed to predict dye uptake in terms of concentration, time and temperature. The model conforms closely to the experimental data. The model was used to find optimum temperature and concentration that result in maximum dye uptake. Langmuir model represent the experimental data well. Maximum dye uptake was found to be 295mg/g, indicating that GLP can be used as an excellent low-cost adsorbent. Pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second order and intraparticle diffusion models were tested. From experimental data it was found that adsorption of MB onto GLP follow pseudo second order kinetics. External diffusion and intraparticle diffusion play roles in adsorption process. Free energy of adsorption (DeltaG degrees ), enthalpy change (DeltaH degrees ) and entropy change (DeltaS degrees ) were calculated to predict the nature of adsorption. Adsorption in packed bed was also evaluated.  相似文献

The objective of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of a synthesized activated carbon for the removal of methylene blue from aqueous solution. Activated carbons synthesized from agricultural wastes precursors are an interesting alternative for their use as adsorbents and catalyst supports in the wastewater treatment field, and represent an important ecological benefit. In this work, mainly, mesoporous-activated carbon was synthesized from peach stones by chemical activation. The textural, morphological, and chemical characterizations of the material were carried out, revealing the acidic nature of the solid. The effects of different experimental conditions on the adsorption capacity, initial methylene blue concentration, pH solution, adsorbent dosage, and temperature have been investigated. The kinetic experimental data followed the pseudo-second-order model. Intra-particle diffusion model indicated that the adsorption process is controlled by intra-particle diffusion stage. Adsorption isotherms were conducted at several operation temperatures, obtaining the largest methylene blue adsorption capacity value, 444.3 mg g?1, at the highest temperature, 333 K. The equilibrium adsorption data were tested by four isotherm models, i.e., Langmuir, Freundlich, Tóth, and Redlich–Peterson. It was found that the adsorption data fitted better to Tóth and Redlich–Peterson isotherm models. The calculated thermodynamic parameters suggested that an endothermic and spontaneous process is occurring.  相似文献
