The friction and wear behavior of Kevlar fabric composites reinforced by PTFE or graphite powders was investigated using a Xuanwu‐III friction and wear tester at dry sliding condition, with the unfilled Kevlar fabric composite as a reference. The worn surfaces were analyzed by means of scanning electron microscope, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was found that PTFE or graphite as fillers could significantly improve the tribological behavior of the Kevlar fabric composites, and the Kevlar fabric composites filled with 20% PTFE exhibited the best antiwear and antifriction ability among all evaluated cases. The transfer films established with two lubricants in sliding wear of composites against metallic counterparts made contributions to reducing friction coefficient and wear rate of Kevlar fabric composites. In particular, FeF2 generated in the sliding of Kevlar fabric composites filled with PTFE against counterpart pin improved the bonding strength between the transfer film and counterpart surface, which accounted for the lowest friction coefficient and wear rate of the Kevlar fabric composites filled with PTFE measured in the testing. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Short basalt fibers (BFs)‐reinforced polyimide (PI) composites filled with MoS2 and graphite were fabricated by means of hot‐press molding technique. The tribological properties of the resulting composites sliding against GCr15 steel ring were investigated on a model ring‐on‐block test rig. The wear mechanisms were also comparatively discussed, based on scanning electron microscopic examination of the worn surface of the PI composites and the transfer film formed on the counterpart. Experimental results revealed that MoS2 and graphite as fillers significantly improved the wear resistance of the BFs‐reinforced polyimide (BFs/PI) composites. For the best combination of friction coefficient and wear rate, the optimal volume content of MoS2 and graphite in the composites appears to be 40 and 35%, respectively. It was also found that the tribological properties of the filled BFs/PI composites were closely related with the sliding conditions such as sliding speed and applied load. Five kinds of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)‐based composites, pure PTFE, PTFE + 30(v)% MoS2, PTFE + 30(v)% PbS, PTFE + 30(v)% CuS, and PTFE + 30(v)% graphite (GR) composites, were first prepared. Then the friction and wear properties of these PTFE composites, sliding against GCr15‐bearing steel under both dry and liquid paraffin‐lubricated conditions, were studied by using an MHK‐500 ring‐on‐block wear tester. Finally, the worn surfaces and the transfer films of the PTFE composites formed on the surface of GCr15 bearing steel were investigated by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and an optical microscope, respectively. Experimental results show that filling with MoS2, PbS, CuS, or graphite to PTFE can reduce the wear of the PTFE composites by two orders of magnitude compared to that of pure PTFE under dry friction conditions. However, the friction and wear‐reducing properties of these PTFE composites can be greatly improved by lubrication with liquid paraffin. Investigations of transfer films show that MoS2, PbS, CuS, and graphite promote the transfer of the PTFE composites onto the surface of GCr15‐bearing steel under dry friction conditions, but the transfer of the PTFE composites onto the surface of GCr15‐bearing steel can be greatly reduced by lubrication with liquid paraffin. SEM examinations of worn surfaces show that with lubrication of liquid paraffin, the creation and development of the cracks occurred on the worn surfaces of the PTFE composites under load, which reduces the load‐supporting capacity of the PTFE composites. The flake graphite, polytetrafluoroethylene, and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) filled phenolic resin‐based composites were prepared by hot press molding. The thermal, mechanical, and tribological properties of composites were studied systematically. The morphologies of the worn surfaces and the change of chemical compositions during the sliding process of the composites were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, respectively. It was found that the heat‐resisting performance and the hardness of the composites are less affected by solid lubricants, while the solid lubricants did harm to the flexural strength of the composites. The friction and wear behaviors of composites highly depended on the volume fractions of solid lubricants and the sliding conditions. The wear resistance increases and the coefficient of friction decreases when the filler load increases. In addition, the appropriate content of solid lubricants is beneficial to reducing the sensitivities of the composites to load and sliding speed. POLYM. The carbon fabric composites filled with several nanoparticles were prepared by dip‐coating and hot press molding technique. The friction and wear behavior of the resulting composites were studied systematically using a block‐on‐ring arrangement. Experimental results showed that the optimal content of nanoparticles as fillers contributed to improve the tribological properties of the carbon fabric composites. Moreover, the friction and wear properties of the fabric composites were closely dependent with the sliding conditions. The differences in the transfer film formed on the counterpart surface during the friction process also accounted for the friction and wear behavior of carbon fabric composites. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The influence of incorporated 300 nm TiO2 (4 vol %), graphite (7 vol %), or combination of both fillers on the tribological performance of an epoxy resin was studied under various sliding load (10–40 N) and velocity conditions (0.2–3.0 m/s). Mechanical measurements indicated that the incorporation of TiO2 significantly enhanced the flexural and impact strength of the neat epoxy and the graphite including epoxy. Tribological tests were conducted with a cylinder‐on‐flat testing rig. The incorporation of nano‐TiO2 significantly improved the wear resistance of the neat epoxy under mild sliding conditions; however, this effect was markedly diminished under severe sliding conditions (high velocity and normal load). Nano‐TiO2 reduced the coefficient of friction only under severe sliding conditions. Graphite showed a beneficial effect in reducing the wear rate and the coefficient of friction of the neat epoxy. Compared to the nano‐TiO2‐filled epoxy, the graphite‐filled epoxy showed more stable wear performance with the variation of the sliding conditions, especially the normal load. A synergistic effect was found for the combination of nano‐TiO2 and graphite, which led to the lowest wear rate and coefficient of friction under the whole investigated conditions. The synergistic effect was attributed to the effective transfer films formed on sliding pair surfaces and the reinforcing effect of the nanoparticles. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. SiO2 nanoparticle filled–poly(phthalazine ether sulfone ketone) (PPESK) composites with various filler volume fractions were made by heating compression molding. The tribological behavior of the PPESK composites was investigated using a block‐on‐ring test rig by sliding PPESK‐based composite blocks against a mild carbon steel ring. The morphologies of the worn composite surfaces, wear debris, and the transferred films formed on the counterpart steel surface were examined with a scanning electron microscope, whereas the chemical state of the Fe element in the transfer film was analyzed with X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In addition, IR spectra were taken to characterize the structure of wear debris and PPESK composites. It was found that SiO2 nanoparticle filled–PPESK composites exhibit good wear resistance and friction‐reduction behavior. The friction and wear behavior of the composites was improved at a volume fraction between 4.2 and 14.5 vol % of the filler SiO2. The results based on combined SEM, XPS, and IR techniques indicate that SiO2 nanoparticle filled–PPESK composite is characterized by slight scuffing in dry sliding against steel and polishing action between composite surface and that of the countpart ring, whereas unfilled PPESK is characterized by severe plastic deformation and adhesion wear. In the former case a thin, but not complete, transfer film was formed on the surface of the counterpart steel, whereas in the latter case, a thick and lumpy transfer film was formed on the counterpart steel surface. The friction and wear characteristics of ZnO‐ or montmorillonite‐nanoparticle‐filled Kevlar fabric composites with different filler proportions when sliding against stainless steel pins under dry friction conditions were studied, with unfilled Kevlar fabric composites used as references. The worn surface and transfer film of Kevlar fabric composites were then examined with a scanning electron microscope. It was found that ZnO and montmorillonite as fillers could improve the tribological behavior of the Kevlar fabric composites with various applied loads, and the best antiwear property was obtained with the composites containing 5 wt % ZnO or montmorillonite. This indicated that these nanoparticles could prevent the destruction of Kevlar fabric composites during the friction process. The transfer film established by these nanoparticles during the sliding wear of the composites against their metallic counterpart made contributions to reducing the friction coefficient and wear rate of the Kevlar fabric composites measured in the test. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Ultra‐high‐molecular‐weight polyethylene/poly (phenyl p‐hydroxyzoate) composites (coded as UHMWPE/PPHZ) were prepared by compression molding. The effects of the poly (phenyl p‐hydroxyzoate) on the tribological properties of the UHMWPE/PPHZ composites were investigated, based on the evaluations of the tribological properties of the composites with various compositions and the examinations of the worn steel surfaces and composites structures by means of scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. It was found that the incorporation of the PPHZ led to a significant decrease in the wear rate of the composites. The composites with the volume fraction of the PPHZ particulates within 45% ~ 75% showed the best wear resistance. The friction coefficient of the UHMWPE/PPHZ composites decreased with increasing load and sliding velocity, while the wear rates increased with increasing load. This was attributed to the enhanced softening and plastic deformation of the composites at elevated load or sliding velocity. The UHMWPE/PPHZ composites of different compositions had differences in the microstructures and the transfer film characteristics on the counterpart steel surface as well. This accounted for their different friction and wear behaviors. The transfer film of the UHMWPE/PPHZ composites appeared to be thinner and more coherent, which was largely responsible for their better wear resistance of t composite than the UHMWPE matrix. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The polyamide (PA) composite coating filled with the particles of microsized MoS2, microsized graphite, and nano‐Al2O3, respectively, were prepared by flame spraying. The friction and wear characteristics of the PA coating and composite coating filled with the varied content of filler under dry sliding against stainless steel were comparatively investigated using a block‐ring tester. The morphologies of the worn surfaces and transfer films on the counterpart steel ring were observed on a scanning electron microscope. The result showed that the addition of fillers to the composite coatings changed significantly the friction coefficient and wear rate of the coatings. The composite coatings filled with a low level content of fillers showed lower wear rate than did pure PA coating under dry sliding; especially the MoS2/PA composite coating had the lowest wear rate among these composite coatings. The composite coatings with a high level content of fillers had higher wear rate than did pure PA coating, except of the Al2O3/PA composite coating. The bonding strengths between the polymer matrix and fillers changed with the content of the fillers, which accounted for the differences in the tribological properties of the composite coatings filled with the varied content fillers. On the other hand, the difference in the friction and wear behaviors of the composite coatings and pure coating were attributed to the difference in their worn surface morphologies and transfer film characteristics. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. It has been found that nano‐ or microsized inorganic particles in general enhance the tribological properties of polymer materials. In the present study, 5 vol % nano‐TiO2 or micro‐CaSiO3 was introduced into a polyetherimide (PEI) matrix composite, which was filled additionally with short carbon fibers (SCF) and graphite flakes. The influence of these inorganic particles on the sliding behavior was investigated with a pin‐on‐disc testing rig at room temperature and 150°C. Experimental results showed that both particles could reduce the wear rate and the frictional coefficient (μ) of the PEI composites under the applied testing conditions. At room temperature, the microparticles‐filled composites exhibited a lower wear rate and μ, while the nano‐TiO2‐filled composites possessed the lowest wear rate and μ at elevated temperature. Enhancement in tribological properties with the addition of the nano‐particles was attributed to the formation of transfer layers on both sliding surfaces together with the reinforcing effect. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Composites of polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) filled with solid lubricant particles of graphite (C), molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) were prepared by compression molding. The size of the solid lubricant particles was 3‐;5 µm. The friction and wear behaviors of the composites were examined with a pinon‐disk test rig. The worn composite pin surfaces and the transfer films formed on the counterface were analyzed with scanning electron microscopy. An X‐ray photo‐electron spectroscope (XPS) was used to characterize the chemical states of the elements in the transfer film. It has been found that graphite and PTFE as the fillers increase the wear resistance of PPS considerably, while MoS2 as the filler decreases the wear resistance of PPS greatly. The fillers promote the decomposition of PPS and generate compounds, which accounts for the changes in the wear resistance of the composites.  相似文献

The friction and wear properties of poly (ether ether ketone) (PEEK) composites filled with potassium titanate whiskers (PTWs) under alkali, water, and dry conditions were investigated. The wear mechanisms in different lubrication situations were studied on the basis of examinations of the worn and counterpart surfaces with scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy. The results showed that PTWs could obviously increase the wear resistance and reduce the friction coefficient of the PEEK composites under dry sliding conditions. Only when the PTW content was greater than 35 wt % did the wear resistance and friction coefficient deteriorate. Sliding in water caused increases in the wear rate and friction coefficient of the PEEK composites, and the PTW‐filled PEEK composites showed the highest friction coefficient and wear rate under this lubrication condition. On the contrary, sliding in an alkaline solution, the PTW‐filled PEEK composites showed the lowest friction coefficient and almost the same level of wear resistance as that found under the dry condition. Furrows and abrasive wear were the main mechanisms for the PTW‐filled PEEK composites sliding in water. Solid lubricants, that is, graphite flakes and poly(tetrafluoroethylene) powders, were incorporated with short carbon fibers into a poly(ether imide) matrix to improve the tribological performance. Wear tests were performed with a polymer pin against a mild steel counterpart at a constant sliding speed of 1 m/s under various temperatures and contact pressures. Composites filled with equilibrium contents of solid lubricants and short carbon fibers, that is, 10 vol % of each filler, exhibited the lowest wear rate and friction coefficient. The relatively lower concentration of solid lubricants adversely affected the wear resistance, whereas the friction coefficient did not vary significantly in comparison with the friction coefficient of the composites filled with only short carbon fibers. The improved tribological behavior was attributed to more continuous and effective friction films formed on the material pairs during sliding. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polyoxymethylene (POM) composites modified with nanoparticles, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and MoS2 were prepared by a twin‐screw extruder. The effect of nanoparticles and solid lubricant PTFE/MoS2 on mechanical and tribological properties of the composites were studied. Tribological tests were conducted on an Amsler friction and wear tester using a block‐on‐ring arrangement under dry sliding and oil lubricated conditions, respectively. The results showed that generally speaking POM nanocomposites had better stiffness and tribological properties than corresponding POM composites attributed to the high surface energy of nanoparticles, except that the tensile strength of three composites and dry‐sliding tribological properties of POM/3%Al2O3 nanocomposite decreased due to the agglomeration of nanoparticles. Tribological properties differed under dry sliding and oil lubricated conditions. The friction coefficient and wear volume of POM nanocomposites under oil lubricated condition decreased significantly. The increased deformation resistance supported the increased wear resistance of POM nanocomposites. POM/PTFE/MoS2/3%Al2O3 nanocomposite had the best mechanical and tribological properties of all three composites, which was attributed to the synergistic effect of nanoparticles and PTFE/MoS2. POLYM. With an objective to investigate the influence of molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) on physico–mechanical and tribological properties of polyamide 66 (PA 66), was compounded with MoS2 in the presence of carbon black (CB). The compounded material was injection molded to make test specimens to evaluate physico–mechanical, thermal, and tribological (wear, friction, and laser etching) characteristics. It was found that tensile strength, percentage elongation at break, and tensile modulus of PA 66/CB/MoS2 composite increased linearly with increase in MoS2 content. The impact strength of the PA 66 matrix increased from 37.2 to 43.2 J/m with an increase in MoS2 content. The wear behavior of PA 66/CB/MoS2 composites have been investigated under dry sliding conditions at different normal loads, sliding distances, and sliding velocities at room temperature. It was found that the introduction of MoS2 in the presence of CB has certainly reduced the friction, wear behavior of PA 66 with improvement in laser etching resistance. MoS2 could increase the adhesion between the transfer film and the counterface surface. The ability of the synergistic fillers in helping the formation of thin, uniform, and continuous transfer film would contribute to enhance the wear resistance of PA 66 composites. POLYM. ENG. Three‐dimensional (3D) braided carbon fiber reinforced polyetheretherketone (denoted as CF3D/PEEK) composites with various fiber volume fractions were prepared via hybrid woven plus vacuum heat‐pressing technology and their tribological behaviors against steel counterpart with different normal loads at dry sliding were investigated. Contrast tribological tests with different lubricants (deionized water and sea water) and counterparts made from different materials (epoxy resin, PEEK) were also conducted. The results showed that the incorporation of 3D braided carbon fiber can greatly improve the tribological properties of PEEK over a certain range of carbon fiber volume fraction (Vf) and an optimum fiber loading of ∼54% exists. The friction coefficient of the CF3D/PEEK composites decreased from 0.195 to 0.173, while the specific wear rate increased from 1.48 × 10−7 to 1.78 × 10−7 mm3 Nm−1 with the normal load increasing from 50 to 150 N. Abrasive mechanism was dominated when the composites sliding with GCr15 steel counterpart under dry and aqueous lubrication conditions. Deionized water and sea water lubricants both significantly reduced the wear of the CF3D/PEEK composites. When sliding with neat PEEK counterpart, the CF3D/PEEK composites possess lower friction coefficient than those against epoxy resin and GCr15 steel counterparts. In general, CF3D/PEEK composites possess excellent tribological properties and comprehensive mechanical performance, which makes it become a potential candidate for special heat‐resisting tribological components. The tribological properties of poly(ether–ether–ketone) (PEEK)/aluminum nitride (AlN) composites reinforced with micro‐ and nano‐AlN particles were evaluated under dry sliding conditions. The wear resistance of pure PEEK is 10‐fold higher than mild steel. It was further improved by 2‐fold at 20 wt % micro‐AlN and by more than 4‐fold at 30 wt % nano‐AlN composite compared with pure PEEK. The improvement in wear resistance was attributed to a thin and coherent transfer film. However, it was deteriorated on further increasing micro‐AlN. The coefficient of friction of the composites was increased. The composites of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) filled with nanometer SiC of different proportions were prepared by compression molding. The tribological behaviors of the composites under lubrication of distilled water were investigated and compared with that under dry sliding, on an M‐200 friction and wear test rig, by running a plain carbon steel (AISI 1045 steel) ring against the composite block. The worn surfaces of nanometer SiC filled‐PEEK and the transfer film were observed by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). As the results, nanometer SiC as the filler greatly improves the wear resistance of PEEK under dry sliding and distilled water lubrication, though the composites show different dependence of wear resistance on the filler content. Nanometer SiC‐filled PEEK showed signs of slight scuffing under distilled water lubrication, while a thin, uniform, and tenacious transfer film was formed on the surface of the counterpart steel ring. On the contrary, unfilled PEEK under lubrication of water showed signs of severe plowing and erosion, while the worn surface of the counterpart ring was very rough, and a discontinuous PEEK transfer film was formed. Thus, the different friction and wear behaviors of unfilled PEEK and nanometer SiC‐filled PEEK can be attributed to the different characteristics of the corresponding transfer films. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
