This paper deals with the utilization of a renewable energy‐based integrated system with the latent heat storage option for building thermal management systems. Both energy and exergy‐based assessments of the current combined system are conducted. For this purpose, phase change material (PCM)‐embedded radiant wall heating system using solar heating and ground source heat pump (GSHP) is studied thermodynamically. Heat is essentially stored within the PCMs as used in the panels to increase the effectiveness. The stored heat is released when the solar energy is not available. In the thermal energy storage analyses, four different PCMs are considered. The present results show that the overall first ‐ law (energy) and second ‐ law (exergy) efficiencies of the PCM‐free radiant heating system are much lower than the case with the PCM‐embedded radiant heating system. Therefore, it is confirmed that the energy efficiency increases from 62% to 87% while the exergy efficiency rises from 14% to 56% with the option where SP26E PCM is employed accordingly.  相似文献

This work aims to evaluate the energy and the exergy performance of an integrated phase change material (PCM) solar collector with latent heat storage in transient conditions. A theoretical model based on the first and the second laws of thermodynamics is developed to predict the thermal behaviour of the system. The effect of natural convection on heat during the melting process is taken into account using an effective thermal conductivity. Influence of PCM thicknesses on the melt fraction, on the energy stored and on the exergy destroyed are studied during charging and discharging processes. Results indicate that the complete melting time is shorter than the solidification time. The latent heat storage system increases the heating requirements at night and reduces the exergy efficiency.  相似文献

The latent thermal energy storage system of the shell-and-tube type during charging and discharging has been analysed in this paper. An experimental and numerical investigation of transient forced convective heat transfer between the heat transfer fluid (HTF) with moderate Prandtl numbers and the tube wall, heat conduction through the wall and solid–liquid phase change of the phase change material (PCM), based on the enthalpy formulation, has been presented. A fully implicit two-dimensional control volume Fortran computer code, with algorithm for non-isothermal phase transition, has been developed for the solution of the corresponding mathematical model. The comparison between numerical predictions and experimental data shows good agreement for both paraffin non-isothermal melting and isothermal solidification. In order to provide guidelines for system performance and design optimisation, unsteady temperature distributions of the HTF, tube wall and the PCM have been obtained by a series of numerical calculations for various HTF working conditions and various geometric parameters, and the thermal behaviour of the latent thermal energy storage unit during charging and discharging has been simulated.  相似文献

Latent heat thermal energy storage is one of the most efficient ways to store thermal energy for heating water by energy received from sun. This paper summarizes the investigation and analysis of thermal energy storage incorporating with and without PCM for use in solar water heaters. The relative studies are classified on the basis of type of collector and the type of storage used i.e. sensible or latent. A thorough literature investigation into the use of phase change material (PCM) in solar water heating has been considered. It has been demonstrated that for a better thermal performance of solar water heater a phase change material with high latent heat and with large surface area for heat transfer is required.  相似文献

Latent thermal energy storage system (LTES) is an integral part of concentrating solar power (CSP) plants for storing sun’s energy during its intermittent diurnal availability in the form of latent heat of a phase change material (PCM). The advantages of an LTES include its isothermal operation and high energy storage density, while the low thermal conductivity of the PCM used in LTES poses a significant disadvantage due to the reduction in the rate at which the PCM can be melted (charging) or solidified (discharging). The present study considers an approach to reducing the thermal resistance of LTES through embedding heat pipes to augment the energy transfer from the heat transfer fluid (HTF) to the PCM. Using a thermal resistance network model of a shell and tube LTES with embedded heat pipes, detailed parametric studies are carried out to assess the influence of the heat pipe and the LTES geometric and operational parameters on the performance of the system during charging and discharging. The physical model is coupled with a numerical optimization method to identify the design and operating parameters of the heat pipe embedded LTES system that maximizes energy transferred, energy transfer rate and effectiveness.  相似文献

Latent heat thermal storage units span a wide and varied range of applications in the domestic, industrial and space based activities. Numerical investigations on the performance enhancement of a solar dynamic latent heat thermal storage (LHTS) unit employing multiple phase change materials (PCM) and fins are made. The LHTS unit has been studied for the charging mode alone. Enthalpy based formulation of the energy equations governing the behaviour of the LHTS system has been made and compared with the response of a single PCM unit. The governing conjugate equations have been solved employing finite difference techniques. The results show an appreciable enhancement in the rate of melting of PCM and nearly uniform exit temperature of heat transfer fluid (HTF) in the multiple PCM LHTS unit.  相似文献

Thermal energy storage units that utilize latent heat storage materials have received increased attention in the recent years because of their relatively large heat storage capacities and isothermal behavior during charging and discharging. In this study, an analytical approach is presented for the prediction of temperature during the solidification in a two-dimensional rectangular latent heat storage using a phase change material (PCM) with internal plate fins. The basic energy equation is formulated accounting for the presence of a heat thermal fluid (HTF) on the walls. A two-dimensional numerical model is developed based on the enthalpy method to predict the distribution temperature of the fin and solid–liquid interface in storage. Results from the analytical solution and numerical model show a good agreement. The developed analytical model estimates satisfactorily the solidification time of PCM in storage, which is useful in the design of PCM-based thermal energy storages and cooling systems.  相似文献

Analysis of energy and exergy has been performed for a latent heat storage system with phase change material (PCM) for a flat-plate solar collector. CaCl2·6H2O was used as PCM in thermal energy storage (TES) system. The designed collector combines in single unit solar energy collection and storage. PCMs are stored in a storage tank, which is located under the collector. A special heat transfer fluid was used to transfer heat from collector to PCM. Exergy analysis, which is based on the second law of thermodynamics, and energy analysis, which is based on the first law, were applied for evaluation of the system efficiency for charging period. The analyses were performed on 3 days in October. It was observed that the average net energy and exergy efficiencies are 45% and 2.2%, respectively.  相似文献

A thermal network model is developed and used to analyze heat transfer in a high temperature latent heat thermal energy storage unit for solar thermal electricity generation. Specifically, the benefits of inserting multiple heat pipes between a heat transfer fluid and a phase change material (PCM) are of interest. Two storage configurations are considered; one with PCM surrounding a tube that conveys the heat transfer fluid, and the second with the PCM contained within a tube over which the heat transfer fluid flows. Both melting and solidification are simulated. It is demonstrated that adding heat pipes enhances thermal performance, which is quantified in terms of dimensionless heat pipe effectiveness.  相似文献

Lightweight envelopes are widely used in modern buildings but they lack sufficient thermal capacity for passive solar utilization. An attractive solution to increase the building thermal capacity is to incorporate phase change material (PCM) into the building envelope. In this paper, a simplified theoretical model is established to optimize an interior PCM for energy storage in a lightweight passive solar room. Analytical equations are presented to calculate the optimal phase change temperature and the total amount of latent heat capacity and to estimate the benefit of the interior PCM for energy storage. Further, as an example, the analytical optimization is applied to the interior PCM panels in a direct-gain room with realistic outdoor climatic conditions of Beijing. The analytical results agree well with the numerical results. The analytical results show that: (1) the optimal phase change temperature depends on the average indoor air temperature and the radiation absorbed by the PCM panels; (2) the interior PCM has little effect on average indoor air temperature; and (3) the amplitude of the indoor air temperature fluctuation depends on the product of surface heat transfer coefficient hin and area A of the PCM panels in a lightweight passive solar room.  相似文献

Phase change materials absorb a large amount of energy as latent heat at a constant phase transition temperature and are thus used for passive heat storage and temperature control, example applications include electronics, and storage of perishable items. Encapsulated phase change materials incorporated into gypsum wallboards of buildings may be suitable for absorbing solar energy directly, reducing temperature rise. Improvement in human comfort is to be expected due to a decrease in the frequency and magnitude of internal air temperature swings, maintaining the temperature closer to the desired set temperature passively for a long period of time. This paper summarises the results of a detailed theoretical investigation and analysis of thermal energy storage and temperature control achieved using passive building construction elements incorporating phase change materials. The predictions detail the effects of using various quantities of different PCM materials with phase change temperatures of 28 and 43 °C incorporated into a selection of wall constructions for selected ambient conditions of temperature and insolation. From this parametric study, optimum arrangements are proposed.  相似文献

The thermal performance of a prototype solar cooker based on an evacuated tube solar collector with phase change material (PCM) storage unit is investigated. The design has separate parts for energy collection and cooking coupled by a PCM storage unit. Solar energy is stored in the PCM storage unit during sunshine hours and is utilized for cooking in late evening/night time. Commercial grade erythritol was used as a latent heat storage material. Noon and evening cooking experiments were conducted with different loads and loading times. Cooking experiments and PCM storage processes were carried out simultaneously. It was observed that noon cooking did not affect the evening cooking, and evening cooking using PCM heat storage was found to be faster than noon cooking. The cooker performance under a variety of operating and climatic conditions was studied at Mie, Japan.  相似文献

A latent heat thermal energy storage system using a phase change material (PCM) is an efficient way of storing or releasing a large amount of heat during melting or solidification. It has been determined that the shell‐and‐tube type heat exchanger is the most promising device as a latent heat system that requires high efficiency for a minimum volume. In this type of heat exchanger, the PCM fills the annular shell space around the finned tube while the heat transfer fluid flows within the tube. One of the methods used for increasing the rate of energy storage is to increase the heat transfer surface area by employing finned surfaces. In this study, energy storage by phase change around a radially finned tube is investigated numerically and experimentally. The solution of the system consists of the solving governing equations for the heat transfer fluid (HTF), pipe wall and phase change material. Numerical simulations are performed to investigate the effect of several fin parameters (fin spacing and fin diameter) and flow parameter (Re number and inlet temperature of HTF) and compare with experimental results. The effect of each variable on energy storage and amount of solidification are presented graphically. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

HEAT TRANSFER ENHANCEMENT IN A LATENT HEAT STORAGE SYSTEM   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Commercial acceptance and the economics of solar thermal technologies are tied to the design and development of efficient, cost-effective thermal storage systems. Thermal storage units that utilize latent heat storage materials have received greater attention in the recent years because of their large heat storage capacity and their isothermal behavior during the charging and discharging processes. One major issue that needs to be addressed is that most phase-change materials (PCM) with high energy storage density have an unacceptably low thermal conductivity and hence heat transfer enhancement techniques are required for any latent heat thermal storage (LHTS) applications. In the present paper the various heat transfer enhancement methods for LHTS systems are discussed. Three different experiments to augment heat transfer were conducted and the findings are reported.  相似文献

This paper presents a numerical investigation on the thermal performance of a solar latent heat storage unit composed of rectangular slabs combined with a flat-plate solar collector. The rectangular slabs of the storage unit are vertically arranged and filled with phase change material (PCM: RT50) dispersed with high conductive nanoparticles (Al2O3). A heat transfer fluid (HTF: water) goes flow in the solar collector and receives solar thermal energy form the absorber area, then circulates between the slabs to transfer heat by forced convection to nanoparticle-enhanced phase change material (NEPCM). A numerical model based on the finite volume method and the conservation equations was developed to model the heat transfer and flow processes in the storage unit. The developed model was validated by comparing the obtained results with the experimental, numerical and theoretical results published in the literature. The thermal performance of the investigated latent heat storage unit combined with the solar collector was evaluated under the meteorological data of a representative day of the month of July in Marrakesh city, Morocco. The effect of the dispersion of high conductive nanoparticles on the thermal behavior and storage performance was also evaluated and compared with the case of base PCM without additives.  相似文献

Efficient application of intermittent renewable energy sources, like solar, waste heat recovery, and so forth, depends on a large extent on the thermal energy storage methods. Latent heat energy storage with the use of phase‐change material (PCM) is the most promising one because it stores large energy in the form of latent heat at a constant temperature. The current study investigates melting and solidification of PCM in the triplex tube heat exchanger (TTHX) numerically. The two‐dimensional numerical model has been developed using Ansys Fluent 16.2, which considers the effects of conduction as well as natural convection. To overcome the limitation imposed by the poor thermal conductivity of PCM, use of fins is the better solution. In the current study, longitudinal fins are used for better performance of TTHX, which increases heat‐transfer area between PCM and heat‐transfer fluid. The effects of location of fins, that is, internal, external, and combined internal‐external fins, are observed. All three configurations improve melting as well as solidification process. During the melting process, internal and combined internal‐external fins are equally efficient, in which maximum 59% to 60% reduction in melting time is achieved. For solidification, internal‐external fins combination gives maximum 58% reduction in solidification time.  相似文献

A computational model for the prediction of the thermal behaviour of a compact multi-layer latent heat storage unit is presented. The model is based on the conservation equations of energy for the phase change material (PCM) and the heat transfer fluid (HTF). Electrical heat sources embedded inside the PCM are used for heat storage (melting) while the flow of an HTF is employed for heat recovery (solidification). Parametric studies are performed to assess the effect of various design parameters and operating conditions on the thermal behaviour of the unit. Results indicate that the average output heat load during the recovery period is strongly dependent on the minimum operating temperature, on the thermal diffusivity of the liquid phase, on the thickness of the PCM layer and on the HTF inlet mass flowrate and temperature. It is, on the other hand, nearly independent of the wall thermal diffusivity and thickness and of the maximum operating temperature. Correlations are proposed for the total energy stored and the output heat load as a function of the design parameters and the operating conditions. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The cylindrical latent heat storage tanks considered here are part of a domestic heating system. In this study, the performances of such energy storage tanks are optimized theoretically. Two different models describing the diurnal transient behaviour of the phase change unit were used. The first is suited to tanks where the phase change material (PCM) is packed in cylinders and the heat transfer fluid (HTF) flows parallel to it (mode 1). The second is suited to tanks where pipes containing the fluid are embedded in the PCM (mode 2). The problem (treated as two-dimensional) is tackled with an enthalpy-based method coupled to the convective heat transfer from the HTF. A series of numerical tests are then undertaken to assess the effects of various PCMs, cylinder radii, pipe radii, total PCM volume in the tank, mass flow rates of fluid, and inlet temperatures of the HTF on the storing time. In addition, optimal geometric design of the store depending on these parameters and PCMs is presented.  相似文献

Energy analysis of space solar dynamic heat receivers employing solid–liquid phase change storage is developed. The heat receiver is a critical component of a solar dynamic system. Phase change thermal energy storage is used in the heat receiver. The energy analysis presented here can be used to understand the energy transfer in the heat receiver and thermal energy storage in phase change materials (PCM). The heat receiver cavity radiation mathematical model and the working fluid tube heat model are established. Energy loss, energy absorbed by gas, the latent and sensible thermal energy storage in PCM, maximum tube temperature, gas outlet temperature and liquid PCM fraction were calculated. The results are analyzed and could be used in heat receiver design.  相似文献
