This paper presents the results of experimental and theoretical analysis on the heat extraction process from solar pond by using the heat pipe heat exchanger. In order to conduct research work, a small scale experimental solar pond with an area of 7.0 m2 and a depth of 1.5 m was built at Khon Kaen in North-Eastern Thailand (16°27′N102°E). Heat was successfully extracted from the lower convective zone (LCZ) of the solar pond by using a heat pipe heat exchanger made from 60 copper tubes with 21 mm inside diameter and 22 mm outside diameter. The length of the evaporator and condenser section was 800 mm and 200 mm respectively. R134a was used as the heat transfer fluid in the experiment. The theoretical model was formulated for the solar pond heat extraction on the basis of the energy conservation equations and by using the solar radiation data for the above location. Numerical methods were used to solve the modeling equations. In the analysis, the performance of heat exchanger is investigated by varying the velocity of inlet air used to extract heat from the condenser end of the heat pipe heat exchanger (HPHE). Air velocity was found to have a significant influence on the effectiveness of heat pipe heat exchanger. In the present investigation, there was an increase in effectiveness by 43% as the air velocity was decreased from 5 m/s to 1 m/s. The results obtained from the theoretical model showed good agreement with the experimental data.  相似文献

In a Photovoltaic (PV) system, heat is generated by an operating diode. Because DC combiner boxes are waterproof, dustproof, air tight and made of heat-insulating material, thermal energy is easily accumulated, affecting the performance and safety of power cables and other electronic components near the diodes in the DC combiner box. This study utilizes a heat pipe as a channel for heat dissipation to conduct the heat out of a DC combiner box without destroying the air-tightness of the box. An existing DC combiner box was improved upon using this method of heat dissipation. The measured heat flow and temperature demonstrate that the proposed method is feasible. The influence of the condensation section temperature on the maximum heat transfer of the heat pipe was also investigated by experiment. The maximum heat transfer rate of the heat pipe was found to increase with the condensation section temperature of the heat pipe. When the condensation temperature was 20 °C, 30 °C and 40 °C, the maximum heat transfer rate of the heat pipe was 21.6 W, 29.6 W and 39.7 W, respectively.  相似文献

Integration of the heat pipe with an ejector will result in a compact and high performance system. The concept of the heat pipe/ejector refrigeration cycle is discussed, in this paper. The needed driving capillary forces are firmly established. The basic characteristics of the system, such as entrainment ratio, coefficient of performance, exergy efficiency and thermal efficiency of the system are evaluated. Also, the zero-dimensional constant pressure mixing theory is applied to ejector. In this study, water is used as the working fluid. Whenever the mixed flow is supersonic, a normal shockwave is assumed to occur upstream of diffuser inlet. The simulation results indicate that, the coefficient of performance can reach about 0.30 at Te = 10 °C, Tc = 30 °C and Tg = 100 °C. Also, the second law efficiency of the heat pipe/ejector refrigeration cycle increases with increasing evaporator temperature and decreasing condenser temperature. It is seen that, the maximum heat pipe cooling capacity obtains for large heat pipe diameters, near the small heat pipe lengths. It has proven that, this refrigeration system can be widely used in many areas, especially in renewable energy utilization such as solar energy.  相似文献

The heat pipe heat exchangers are used in heat recovery applications to cool the incoming fresh air in air conditioning applications. Two streams of fresh and return air have been connected with heat pipe heat exchanger to investigate the thermal performance and effectiveness of heat recovery system. Ratios of mass flow rate between return and fresh air of 1, 1.5 and 2.3 have been adapted to validate the heat transfer and the temperature change of fresh air. Fresh air inlet temperature of 32–40 °C has been controlled, while the inlet return air temperature is kept constant at about 26 °C. The results showed that the temperature changes of fresh and return air are increased with the increase of inlet temperature of fresh air. The effectiveness and heat transfer for both evaporator and condenser sections are also increased to about 48%, when the inlet fresh air temperature is increased to 40 °C. The effect of mass flow rate ratio on effectiveness is positive for evaporator side and negative for condenser side. The enthalpy ratio between the heat recovery and conventional air mixing is increased to about 85% with increasing fresh air inlet temperature. The optimum effectiveness of heat pipe heat exchanger is estimated and compared with the present experimental data. The results showed that the effectiveness is close to the optimum effectiveness at fresh air inlet temperature near the fluid operating temperature of heat pipes.  相似文献

In the present study, the thermal performance and pressure drop of the helical-coil heat exchanger with and without helical crimped fins are studied. The heat exchanger consists of a shell and helically coiled tube unit with two different coil diameters. Each coil is fabricated by bending a 9.50 mm diameter straight copper tube into a helical-coil tube of thirteen turns. Cold and hot water are used as working fluids in shell side and tube side, respectively. The experiments are done at the cold and hot water mass flow rates ranging between 0.10 and 0.22 kg/s, and between 0.02 and 0.12 kg/s, respectively. The inlet temperatures of cold and hot water are between 15 and 25 °C, and between 35 and 45 °C, respectively. The cold water entering the heat exchanger at the outer channel flows across the helical tube and flows out at the inner channel. The hot water enters the heat exchanger at the inner helical-coil tube and flows along the helical tube. The effects of the inlet conditions of both working fluids flowing through the test section on the heat transfer characteristics are discussed.  相似文献

The artificial neural network (ANN) approach is generic technique for mapping non-linear relationships between inputs and outputs without knowing the details of these relationships. In this paper, an application of the ANN has been presented for a PID controlled heat pump dryer. In PID controlled heat pump dryer, air velocity changed according to the temperature value which is set in process control device. Heat pump dryer was tested drying of hazelnut at 40 °C, 45 °C and 50 °C drying air temperatures. By training the experiment results with ANN, drying air velocities, moisture content of hazelnuts and total drying time were predicted for 42 °C, 44 °C, 46 °C and 48 °C drying air temperatures.  相似文献

A heat recovery unit (HRU) has been developed and implemented in a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell cogeneration system that generates electricity and hot water efficiently. It consists of a stack coolant circuit, a heat exchanger, and a heat recovery circuit. An intelligent thermal control algorism is proposed as well to manage the cogeneration system. The HRU together with the control scheme has managed the fuel cell cogeneration system properly and efficiently. The stack coolant inlet temperature (SCIT) is well controlled at the preset temperatures (55 °C and 59 °C) under different external loads (0–3 kW). Results also show that the dynamics of the SCIT is closely related to the actions of the secondary fluid pump. Up to 50% fuel energy can be recovered thermally in the present cogeneration system. Examination of the external-load effects reveals that increasing external loads increases the electrical efficiency but decreases the heat recovery efficiency slightly. The maximum efficiency as a combination of heat and power is 82% based on hydrogen's lower heating value.  相似文献

Experimental and theoretical investigations on the entropy generation, exergy loss of a horizontal concentric micro-fin tube heat exchanger are presented. The experiments setup are designed and constructed for the measured data by using hot water and cold water as working fluids. The micro-fin tube is fabricated from the copper tube with an inner diameter of 8.92 mm. The experiments are performed for the hot and cold water mass flow rates in the range of 0.02-0.10 kg/s. The inlet hot water and inlet cold water temperatures are between 40 and 50 °C, and between 15 and 20 °C, respectively. The effects of relevant parameters on the entropy generation, and exergy loss are discussed. A central finite difference method is employed to solve the model for obtaining temperature distribution, entropy generation, and exergy loss of the micro-fin tube heat exchanger. The predicted results obtained from the model are verified by comparing with the present measured data. Reasonable agreement is obtained from the comparison between predicted results and those from the measured data.  相似文献

Nowadays a sustainable development for more efficient use of energy and protection of the environment is of increasing importance. Gas engine heat pumps represent one of the most practicable solutions which offer high energy efficiency and environmentally friendly for heating and cooling applications. In this paper, the performance characteristics of gas engine driven heat pump used in water cooling were investigated experimentally without engine heat recovery. The effects of several important factors (evaporator water inlet temperature, evaporator water volume flow rate, ambient air temperature, and engine speed) on the performance of gas engine driven heat pump were studied in a wide range of operating conditions. The results showed that primary energy ratio of the system increased by 22.5% as evaporator water inlet temperature increased from 13 °C to 24 °C. On the other hand, varying of engine speed from 1300 rpm to 1750 rpm led to decrease in system primary energy ratio by 13%. Maximum primary energy ratio has been estimated with a value of two over a wide range of operating conditions.  相似文献

Heat and mass transfer characteristics of finned-tube heat exchangers under dehumidifying and dry conditions are examined both theoretically and experimentally in the present study. Six types of heat exchangers were tested on an experimental facility. It was determined that there is less than 1 °C of outlet air temperature difference between computer program results and literature for water and R22 as a refrigerant. The outlet air specific humidity difference between them is less than 6.44% for water and 9% for R22. According to the experimental results, louvers on fin cause an increase of airside heat transfer coefficient of about 50% or 100%.  相似文献

The two-phase heat transfer coefficients of pure HFC-134a condensing inside a smooth tube-in-tube heat exchanger are experimentally investigated. The test section is a 0.5 m long double tube with refrigerant flowing in the inner tube and cooling water flowing in the annulus. The inner tube is constructed from smooth copper tubing of 9.52 mm outer diameter and 8.1 mm inner diameter. The test runs are performed at average saturation condensing temperatures between 40–50 °C. The mass fluxes are between 260 and 515 kg m− 2s− 1 and the heat fluxes are between 11.3 and 55.3 kW m− 2. The quality of the refrigerant in the test section is calculated using the temperature and pressure obtained from the experiment. The average heat transfer coefficient of the refrigerant is determined by applying an energy balance based on the energy transferred from the test section. The effects of heat flux, mass flux and condensation temperature on the heat transfer coefficients are also discussed. Eleven well-known correlations for annular flow are compared to each other using a large amount of data obtained from various experimental conditions. A new correlation for the condensation heat transfer coefficient is proposed for practical applications.  相似文献

A number of solar domestic hot water systems and many combined space and water heating systems have heat exchangers placed directly in the storage fluid to charge and/or discharge the tank. Operation of the heat exchanger produces a buoyancy-driven flow within the storage fluid. With a view toward controlling the flow field to increase heat transfer, a cylindrical baffle is inserted in a 350 l cylindrical storage tank. The baffle creates a 40 mm annular gap adjacent to the tank wall. A 10 m-long, 0.3 m2 copper coil heat exchanger is placed in the gap. The effects of the baffle on the transient heat transfer, delivered water temperature, heat exchanger effectiveness, and temperature distribution within the storage fluid are presented during discharge of initially thermally stratified and fully mixed storage tanks. The baffle increases the storage side convective heat transfer to the heat exchanger by 20%. This increase is attributed to higher storage fluid velocities across the heat exchanger.  相似文献

This paper reports the use of artificial neural network models to simulate the thermal performance of a compact, fin-tube heat exchanger with air and water/ethylene glycol anti-freeze mixtures as the working fluids. The model predictions were compared with experimental data over a range of flow rates and inlet temperatures and with various ethylene glycol concentrations. In addition, the inlet air flow was distorted by obstructing part of the inlet ducting near the front face of the exchanger. The artificial neural networks were able to predict the overall rate of heat transfer in the exchanger with a high degree of accuracy and in this respect were found to be superior over conventional non-linear regression models in capturing the underlying non-linearity in the data. Moreover the detailed spatial variations in outlet air temperature were also adequately predicted. The results indicate that appropriately trained neural networks can simulate both the overall and “local” characteristics of the compact heat exchanger. In addition the paper demonstrates how an alternative type of neural network, the so-called Self-Organising-Map (SOM), can be employed for heat exchanger condition monitoring by identifying and classifying the deterioration in exchanger performance which, in this case, was associated with different levels of inlet obstruction.  相似文献

This study investigated the direct relationship between the measured condensation pressure drop and convective heat transfer coefficient of R134a flowing downward inside a vertical smooth copper tube having an inner diameter of 8.1 mm and a length of 500 mm during annular flow. R134a and water were used as working fluids on the tube side and annular side of a double tube heat exchanger, respectively. Condensation experiments were performed at mass fluxes of 260, 300, 340, 400, 456 and 515 kg m−2 s−1 in the high mass flux region of R134a. The condensing temperatures were around 40 and 50 °C; the heat fluxes were between 10.16 and 66.61 kW m−2. Paliwoda’s analysis, which focused mainly on the determination of the two-phase flow factor and two-phase length of evaporators and condensers, was adapted to the in-tube condensation phenomena in the test section to determine the condensation heat transfer coefficient, heat flux, two-phase length and pressure drop experimentally by means of a large number of data points obtained under various experimental conditions.  相似文献

This paper presents the achievements gained in solid sorption refrigeration prototypes since the end of the l970s, when interest in sorption systems was renewed. The applications included are ice making and air conditioning. The latter includes not only cooling and heating, but also dehumidification by desiccant systems. The prototypes presented were designed to use waste heat or solar energy as the main heat source. The waste heat could be from diesel engines or from power plants, in combined cooling, heating and power systems (CCHP). The current technology of adsorption solar-powered icemakers allows a daily ice production of between 4 and 7 kg m−2 of solar collector, with a solar coefficient of performance (COP) between 0.10 and 0.16. The silica gel–water chillers studied can be powered by hot water warmer than 55 °C. The COP is usually around 0.2–0.6, and in some commercially produced machines, it can be up to 0.7. The utilization of such chillers in CCHP systems, hospitals, buildings and grain depots are discussed. Despite their advantages, solid sorption systems still present some drawbacks such as low specific cooling power (SCP) and COP. Thus, some techniques to overcome these problems are also contemplated, together with the perspectives for their broad commercialisation. Among these techniques, a special attention was devoted to innovative adsorbent materials, to advanced cycles and to heat pipes, which are suitable devices not only to improve the heat transfer but also can help to avoid corrosion in the adsorbers. Recent experiments performed by the research group of the authors with machines that employ composite adsorbent material and heat pipes showed that it is possible to achieve a SCP of 770 W kg−1 of salt and COP of 0.39 at evaporation temperatures of −20 °C and generation temperature of 115 °C.  相似文献

The objective of this work is to study experimentally the unsteady heat transfer downstream of a backward-facing step in the 2-D laminar regime when the inlet flow is pulsated. To this aim, an experimental set-up has been prepared with water as the working fluid. The Reynolds number based on the hydraulic diameter of the inlet channel and average inlet velocity is 300. Inlet flow temperature is 30 °C and a region downstream of the step is heated up to 74 °C. Pulsation is achieved using a piston pump and heat transfer is studied up to a maximum pulsation Strouhal number of 1.2. The results obtained confirm previous numerical simulation work in the sense that pulsation could be used to partially recover the heat transfer efficiency that is lost in steady flow conditions downstream of a backward-facing step. It has also been confirmed that the behaviour of the averaged Nusselt number versus pulsation Strouhal number is of the resonant type. That is: the Nusselt number increases from the steady situation up to a certain value of the Strouhal number (0.41 in our case) and, then, it degrades as the frequency of the pulsation is further increased.  相似文献

This study investigates passive heat transfer enhancement techniques to determine the distribution of temperature and static pressure in test tubes, the friction factor, the heat flux, the temperature difference between the inlet and outlet fluid temperatures, the pressure drop penalty and the numerical convective heat transfer coefficient, and then compares the results to the experimental data of Zdaniuk et al. It predicts the single-phase friction factors for the smooth and enhanced tubes by means of the empirical correlations of Blasius and Zdaniuk et al. This study performed calculations on a smooth tube and two helically finned tubes with different geometric parameters also used in the analyses of Zdaniuk et al. It also performed calculations on two corrugated tubes in the simulation study. In Zdaniuk et al.'s experimental setup, the horizontal test section was a 2.74 m long countercurrent flow double tube heat exchanger with the fluid of water flowing in the inner copper tube (15.57–15.64 mm i.d.) and cooling water flowing in the annulus (31.75 mm i.d.). Their test runs were performed at a temperature around 20 °C for cold water flowing in the annulus while Reynolds numbers ranged from 12,000 to 57,000 for the water flowing in the inner tube. A single-phase numerical model having three-dimensional equations is employed with either constant or temperature dependent properties to study the hydrodynamics and thermal behaviors of the flow. The temperature contours are presented for inlet, outlet and fully developed regions of the tube. The variations of the fluid temperature and static pressure along tube length are shown in the paper. The results obtained from a numerical analysis for the helically tubes were validated by various friction factor correlations, such as those found by Blasius and Zdaniuk et al. Then, numerical results were obtained for the two corrugated tubes as a simulation study. The present study found that the average deviation is less than 5% for the friction factors obtained by the Fluent CFD program while Blasius's correlation has the average deviation of less than 10%. The corrugated tubes have a higher heat transfer coefficient than smooth tubes but a lower coefficient than helically finned tubes. The paper also investigates the pressure drop penalty for the heat transfer enhancement.  相似文献

A compact silica gel–water adsorption chiller without vacuum valves was manufactured and experimentally studied. This chiller contains two adsorption/desorption chambers and one chilled water tank. Each adsorption/desorption chamber consists of one adsorber, one condenser and one evaporator. The chilled water tank is adopted to mitigate the variation of the chilled water outlet temperature. A mass recovery-like process, which is a heat recovery process between the two evaporators, was carried out in this chiller. A novel heat recovery process was also fulfilled after the mass recovery-like process to improve the coefficient of performance (COP). The cooling power and COP were 9.60 kW and 0.49 respectively when the average hot water inlet temperature, cooling water inlet temperature, and chilled water outlet temperature were 82.0, 31.6 and 12.3 °C, respectively.  相似文献

This paper presents the effect of the circular-ring turbulator (CRT) on the heat transfer and fluid friction characteristics in a heat exchanger tube. The experiments were conducted by insertion of CRTs with various geometries, including three different diameter ratios (DR = d/D = 0.5, 0.6 and 0.7) and three different pitch ratios (PR = p/D = 6, 8 and 12). During the test air at 27 °C was passed through the test tube which was controlled under uniform wall heat flux condition. The Reynolds number was varied from 4000 to 20,000. According to the experimental results, heat transfer rates in the tube fitted with CRTs are augmented around 57% to 195% compared to that in the plain tube, depending upon operating conditions. In addition, the results also reveal the CRT with the smallest pitch and diameter ratios offers the highest heat transfer rate in accompany with the largest pressure loss.  相似文献

In this study, the effect on heat transfer rates, friction factor and exergy loss of oscillating pipe were investigated. Air was used as working fluid. To obtain oscillating motion of the test pipe, the experimental setup was designed. Thermocouple, the temperature control system and the other measurement systems were installed on the oscillating section. For both steady and oscillating flows, the bulk and local wall temperature distribution, pressure drop, inlet and outlet temperatures and frequency were measured. The parameters for this study were chosen as Reynolds number from 5000 to 20,000 at oscillating frequencies with 10 and 20 Hz. The variations of Nusselt number and exergy loss with these parameters were determined and presented graphically. In oscillatory flow, a heat transfer enhancement of up to at constant pumping power was achieved. The exergy loss was decreased with the increase of Reynolds number. The exergy loss affected slightly from the increase of oscillating frequencies.  相似文献
