Newly emerging wireless signal formats can present significant design challenges to the system design engineer. Wideband code division multiple access (W-CDMA) can present many engineering design and verification challenges, due to its physical layer complexity as well as complexities that can arise when integrating RF and baseband designs to achieve a working system. System design engineers typically have the task of interpreting standards specifications, first for partitioning subsystem requirements, then verifying that the end-to-end system design (typically including both baseband and RF designs) will meet specifications when they are finally integrated. This article considers a case study that illustrates the importance of simulating baseband and RF designs together to accomplish this task. Specifically, a conceptual system design that includes system models, a fixed-point finite impulse response filter, and transistor-level circuit design is simulated and verified together against measurements defined in the third-generation partnership project (3GPP) W-CDMA standards specifications. Tradeoffs between improving either the RF or baseband design to meet overall system specifications will be discussed. Finally, design verification using "connected solutions," or connectivity between, electronic design automation software and test equipment will be described, illustrating how verification testing can be started earlier to help reduce risk by identifying performance issues early in the design cycle, when they are potentially easier and costly to implement 相似文献

The use of system design projects in the education of senior engineering students is discussed. In an experiment with such a project at the University of Iowa, students learned many technical and human lessons by partitioning the assigned class project into small subsystem problems, designing and building the subsystems, solving the interface problems, and testing the overall project. This kind of system experience is a natural extension of the typical freshman design course in which students learn to solve problems in groups. Here the more sophistocated skills of the seniors are incorporated into the individual group designs, and there is the additional incentive of maidng the individual projects work together to achieve a goal common to the entire class. 相似文献

This paper describes a computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) case study in engineering education carried out within the context of a network management course. The case study shows that the use of two computing tools developed by the authors and based on free-and open-source software (FOSS) provide significant educational benefits over traditional engineering pedagogical approaches in terms of both concepts and engineering competencies acquisition. The Collage authoring tool guides and supports the course teacher in the process of authoring computer-interpretable representations (using the IMS learning design standard notation) of effective collaborative pedagogical designs. Besides, the Gridcole system supports the enactment of that design by guiding the students throughout the prescribed sequence of learning activities. The paper introduces the goals and context of the case study, elaborates on how Collage and Gridcole were employed, describes the applied evaluation methodology, and discusses the most significant findings derived from the case study. 相似文献

在工程实践中,如何实现上位机与Qsys系统之间的无缝链接,一直是设计中的重点。针对以上问题,本文提出了基于Avalon总线的PCI从设备IP核的设计方法,以嵌入式IP软核的形式取代原有专用接口芯片。设计按照自顶而下设计流程,首先给出了PCI从设备的RTL级模块划分,并详细设计了其mealy型状态机,然后将Avalon总线与PCI总线实现片内互联,最终开发了一个具有自主知识产权的IP软核。该IP核符合PCI 2.2标准,可进行资源自动配置,实现数据正确读写,还实现了PCI总线与Nios II处理器之间的数据传输,验证了该设计的正确性和可行性。 相似文献

A sequence of two courses (second term of third (junior) year and both terms of fourth (senior) year) has been developed to introduce students to a structured approach to design. The first course includes lecture-style presentation of the top-down, step-wise refinement, design methodology. Realistic documentation and client/consultant communication is fostered as well as the design, fabrication, and testing of a prototype. In the senior-year course, students divide into teams of three members to undertake a single design problem, with individual faculty members acting as “clients”. A more complete sequence of the top-down design process is undertaken in these senior-year projects. Documentation is required at each stage of the design sequence to ensure compliance with the client/team “contract”. Introduction of a formal design process, including time management, has resulted in an increased “success” rate in the final designs and in more complex problems being proposed by the “clients” than had previously been experienced 相似文献

A novel course conducted for the past three years at the National University of Singapore is described. The course design projects introduce students to microwave monolithic integrated circuit (MMIC) component and subsystem design and expose them to modern computer-aided design (CAD) tools, industry standard test equipment, and procedures. In addition, since the proposed topics are industry-collaborated research projects, students gain new enthusiasm for the circuit design and directly see the importance and relevance in the engineering field. In contrast to the available MMIC courses conducted in the other universities or organizations, these students are given the complete freedom to implement the hardware within a fixed time frame. Implementation of these MMIC circuitries using external foundries, such as United Monolithic Semi-conductor (UMS), Philips Microwave Limeil (PML), and Triquint, has proven to be highly motivational and educational and, eventually, has led to increased enrollments in other higher level electromagnetic and microwave circuit modules. 相似文献

The use of the electronic spreadsheet as a modeling and simulation tool in the engineering fields is increasingly popular with an increasing number of tertiary institutions, including spreadsheet as a teaching resource in the core curriculum of these fields. Concurrently, the dramatic improvement in Internet speed allows certain course material to be delivered online, facilitating electronic-learning (E-learning). E-learning frees students from the restriction of time, although they are still largely constrained by space to the nearest wired computer. However, the boundary of computing has expanded with the advance in wireless communication; now numerous handheld mobile devices (e.g., personal digital assistants (PDAs) and cellular phones) are available that will allow computing to be accomplished on the move. In turn, this wireless trend has contributed to move E-learning toward mobile learning (M-learning). Based on the previously mentioned trends, this paper presents the development, implementation, and evaluation of a mobile spreadsheet-based Proportional, Integral, Derivative (PID) control simulation system that aims to enhance the learning of the student in the field of control engineering. The system has been used in an industrial control system course at the National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore. The mobile spreadsheet system developed is able to work with most handheld mobile devices, including the cellular phone. The methods and difficulties (e.g., limited storage space and small screen display of a cellular phone) involved in the development of the system will be duly discussed. Feedback from students that is used to assess the usefulness of the system will be released to share the benefits of such an M-learning system. 相似文献
