The high levels of persistent organic pollutants have caused concern about human health, especially the health of the foetus and newborn child. This has especially been the case for Greenlandic and Canadian Inuits, where elevated levels of PCB and p,p'-DDE have been reported. In recent studies from arctic Russia the levels of beta-HCH and the DDT-group have been reported to be high, whereas the levels of PCB are low. However, the information from Northern Russia is, so far, incomplete. In this study, 27 delivering women from the city of Arkhangelsk, Russia, participated. They completed a questionnaire before delivery and plasma samples were collected after delivery. The analytical method developed to support this study involved gel permeation chromatography and silica gel purification, in addition to a traditional GC-MS method, and thus include acid labile compounds. The arithmetic mean levels of p,p'-DDE, beta-HCH and p,p'-DDT were 5.42, 3.59 and 1.17 microg/l, respectively. Toxaphene 26 and 50 were the only toxaphenes above the limit of detection, with arithmetic mean levels of 0.05 and 0.09 microg/l, respectively. Among the PCB congeners, PCB 138/163 was the most abundant with an arithmetic mean of 0.53 microg/l. The elevated levels of beta-HCH and p,p'-DDT as well as a low DDE/DDT ratio is a strong indication of fresh and maybe local sources in this area.  相似文献

To estimate levels of organochlorine residuals in the Japanese population and the contribution of dietary factors to these levels, we determined serum levels of beta-hexachlorocyclohexane (beta-HCH), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), p,p'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane (p,p'-DDD), 1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl) ethylene (p,p'-DDE) and p,p'-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (p,p'-DDT) in 41 volunteers (14 men and 27 women) in a rural area of Northern Japan. These organochlorine levels were measured using gas-chromatography mass-spectrometry. By a self-administered dietary history questionnaire, the usual dietary intake was estimated. Their median levels (range) were as follows: beta-HCH, 0.50 (0.05-1.50); HCB, 0.20 (0.02-0.70); and total DDT (p,p'-DDE + p,p'-DDT), 5.0 (0.9-31.0) ng/ml serum. Levels of p,p'-DDD were detected in only seven subjects (0.05-0.6 ng/ml serum). The beta-HCH levels were increased with rice and milk intakes, but the least squares means were not simply increased according to the quartile of the intakes. Concerning HCB, fish intake showed a borderline significant correlation (0.20, P = 0.052). In terms of total DDT, intakes of meat, fish, vegetable and milk showed a positive relationship, although none of them provided statistically significant results. No other statistically significant relation between any organochlorines and any food intakes examined was observed in this study. The present study suggests that organochlorine compounds are transported into the human body via foods in the Japanese population. Their effects on health should thus be investigated and monitored.  相似文献

A baseline for exposure to organochlorine and metal contaminants has been established for mothers and newborns in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut areas of Arctic Canada. Maternal and umbilical cord blood plasma organochlorine levels are described for Inuit, Dene, Métis, Caucasian and Other non-Aboriginal participants. Overall, 523 women volunteered to participate by giving their written informed consent between May 1994 and June 1999, resulting in the collection of 386 maternal blood samples, 407 cord blood samples and 351 maternal/cord pairs. Nearly half of all the participants regularly smoked cigarettes, including 77% of the Inuit participants. Maternal and cord results are presented for PCBs (as Aroclor 1260 and 14 congeners) and organochlorine pesticides, including p,p'-DDT, p,p'-DDE, beta-hexachlorocyclohexane (beta-HCH), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), cis and trans nonachlor, heptachlor epoxide, oxychlordane, mirex, dieldrin and toxaphene. Maternal PCB levels (as Aroclor 1260) averaged 4.42 (+/-9.03) microg/l in Inuit, which was 3.3 times higher than those found in Dene/Métis, and 3.4 times higher than levels in Caucasians. Mean DDE levels were 2.8 times higher in the Other non-Aboriginal group (Chinese, Filipino, East Indian and multiple ethnicity) than in the Inuit group, at 3.99 microg/l and 1.42 microg/l, respectively. Cord blood PCB levels (as Aroclor 1260) averaged 1.16 (+/-2.42) microg/l for Inuit participants, which was 3.3-4 fold higher than the other ethnic groups. PCBs, p,p'-DDE and hexachlorobenzene were detected in all maternal samples, and p,p'-DDE was detected in all cord samples. Regression coefficients for maternal/cord pairs are presented for selected organochlorines. Other results from this study, including maternal and cord metals data, will be presented elsewhere.  相似文献

Edible tissues from 10 marine species, collected from the Gulf of Naples in the Southern Tyrrhenian Sea (Italy) between February and July 2003, were analysed for the presence of organochlorine pesticides hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and DDTs (p,p'-DDT, p,p'-DDE, and p,p'-DDD), and 20 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The PCB levels (calculated as the sum of all the determined congeners) were found to be the highest (from 56.8 to 47909.5 ng/g on lipid basis), followed by the DDTs (sum of p,p'-DDT and its metabolites; 相似文献

The levels of organochlorinated pesticides (OCPs): p,p'-DDT and its metabolites, hexachlorobenzene (HCB), hexachlorocyclohexane isomers (HCHs), chlordanes and their metabolites, and 18 polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners were measured in maternal serum, umbilical cord serum and human milk collected from 22 mothers living in the Wielkopolska region, Poland. Additionally, 11 polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) congeners were measured in the human milk samples. p,p'-DDT and its major metabolite, p,p'-DDE, together with HCB, were found in all milk and serum samples. Median concentrations of p,p'-DDE in maternal serum, umbilical cord serum and milk were 343, 329 and 634ng/g lipid weight (lw). PCB congeners 138, 153 and 180 were the major congeners measured in all serum samples, while CB 170 was detected in 74% and 100% of umbilical cord and maternal serum, respectively. Except for CBs 74, 101 and 105, which had a detection frequency of 77%, 23% and 82%, respectively, all investigated PCB congeners were measured in all human milk samples. The median concentrations of sum PCBs in maternal serum, umbilical cord serum and milk were 79, 60 and 133 ng/g lw, respectively. A good correlation (Spearman R(S)>0.75, p<0.001) was found for major PCBs, p,p'-DDT and p,p'-DDE, between maternal and umbilical cord serum, while the correlation was weaker between milk and serum. The median of sum PBDEs in human milk was 2.0 ng/g lw (range 0.8 to 8.4), with BDE 47 being always the most abundant PBDE congener and, together with BDE 153, being present in all samples. In general, results found in the investigated group are at the low end of the concentration range measured in Europe.  相似文献

This study presents for the first time temporal changes of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in Russian human breast milk samples. Concentrations of OCPs and PCBs in samples from three locations in the North West of Russia in 2000-2002 (n=42), were compared to corresponding levels measured in 1993-1996 (n=58). In addition brominated flame retardants (BFRs), consisting of polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDEs) (including BDE-209) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) were analysed in samples from 2000-2002 (n=37). The present levels of SigmaDDTs and SigmaHCHs were 5 and 10 times higher than corresponding levels in the neighbouring country Norway. Median concentrations of SigmaHCHs (196 microg/kg lw), SigmaCHBs (19.7 microg/kg lw) and SigmaPCBs(16) (316 microg/kg lw) were highest in Murmansk. The percentage of p,p'-DDT to SigmaDDTs and ratio DDE/DDT suggest possible ongoing use of DDT in Russia. Levels of PBDE were low and dominated by the congeners BDE-47 and BDE-153. The deca brominated BDE-209 was detected in all analysed samples (median concentration 0.19 microg/kg lipid). Levels of SigmaOCPs and SigmaPCBs decreased 56 and 30% in Murmansk and 36 and 43% in Arkhangelsk during the study period. The decline of SigmaOCPs was significant at both locations (p<0.05-p<0.0001). For SigmaPCBs, the decreasing trend was only significant in Arkhangelsk (p<0.0001). In addition, a decline of Sigmatotal TEQs (SigmaTEQs of PCDDs/PCDFs, non-ortho- and mono-ortho PCBs) was observed in Murmansk and Arkhangelsk during the study period. The exposure of infants by PCDDs/PCDFs and dioxin-like PCBs is still exceeding the daily tolerable intake (TDI) in North West Russia. However, the concentrations of PCDDs/PCDFs and dioxin-like PCBs seem to decline very rapidly.  相似文献

To our knowledge, no prospective study has examined the association between blood levels of organochlorines and breast cancer risk in Asian countries. Here, we tested the hypothesis that higher blood levels of organochlorines are associated with an increased risk of breast cancer in Japanese women. A total of 24,226 women subjects of the Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective Study aged 40 to 69 years who responded to the baseline questionnaire and provided blood in 1990-1995 were followed to December 2002. During 10.7 years follow-up, 144 cases of breast cancer were newly diagnosed. Two matched-controls for each case were selected from the cohort. Plasma levels of p,p'-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (p,p'-DDT), p,p'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (p,p'-DDE), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), and beta-hexachlorocyclohexane (beta-HCH) were measured. A conditional logistic regression was used to estimate the odds ratio (OR) of breast cancer according to cholesterol-adjusted organochlorine levels based on 139 matched pairs. We found no statistically significant positive association between plasma organochlorine level and breast cancer risk. Adjusted ORs for p,p'-DDT, HCB, and beta-HCH were less than 1. For p,p'-DDE, adjusted OR for the highest versus lowest quartile was 1.48 (95% confidence interval 0.70-3.13; p for trend=0.25). A stratified analysis by menopausal status showed positive associations for p,p'-DDT and p,p'-DDE in premenopausal but not postmenopausal women, although without statistical significance. Our data do not support the hypothesis that plasma levels of p,p'-DDT, p,p'-DDE, HCB, and beta-HCH are associated with an overall increased risk of breast cancer among Japanese women.  相似文献

Trace elements, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine (OC) pesticide levels were determined in tissues collected from stranded and bycaught common dolphins (Delphinus sp.) from New Zealand waters between 1999 and 2005. The concentrations of mercury (Hg), selenium (Se), chromium (Cr), zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), tin (Sn), lead (Pb), arsenic (As) and silver (Ag) were determined in blubber, liver and kidney tissue. PCBs (45 congeners) and a range of OC pesticides including dieldrin, hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and its metabolites DDE and DDD were determined in blubber samples. Cr and Ni were not detected in any of the samples and concentrations of Co, Sn and Pb were generally low. Concentrations of Hg ranged from 0.17 to 110 mg/kg wet weight. Organochlorine pesticides dieldrin, HCB, o,p'-DDT and p,p'-DDE were present at the highest concentrations. Sum DDT concentrations in the blubber ranged from 17 to 337 and 654 to 4430 microg/kg wet weight in females and males, respectively. Similarly, Sigma45CB concentrations ranged from 49 to 386 and 268 to 1634 microg/kg wet weight in females and males, respectively. The mean transmission of SigmaDDTs and ICES7CBs between a genetically determined mother-offspring pair was calculated at 46% and 42%, respectively. Concentrations of organochlorine pesticides determined in the present study are within similar range to those reported for Hector's dolphins (Cephalorhyncus hectori) from inshore New Zealand waters.  相似文献

In 2001, samples of liver (n = 38) and perirenal fat (n = 25) (only in males) were taken from European roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) populating a hilly, wooded protected area in the Emilia-Romagna region of Northern Italy. Samples were analyzed for organochlorine pesticides dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and its metabolites, hexachlorobenzene (HCB), hexachlorocycloexane alpha-, beta- and gamma-isomers (alpha-, beta- and gamma-HCH), alpha-endosulfan, aldrin, dieldrin and endrin, and the seven PCB 'indicator' congeners IUPAC Nos. 28, 52, 101, 118, 138, 153 and 180, in order to investigate the current state of contamination of the area and to assess the possible toxicological risks for the monitored species. p,p'-DDE was detected in 95% of the liver and perirenal fat samples (n = 63), at concentrations ranging from < dl to 629.3 ng/g lipid weight, which were much higher than those found for HCB and gamma-HCH. The concentrations of the other measured organochlorine pesticides and metabolites were below the detection limit in all the samples. PCBs were found in 97% of the liver and perirenal fat samples, at total levels ranging between < dl to 414.5 ng/g lipid weight. The hepta- and hexa-chlorinated congeners 180, 153 and 138 were predominant and comprised more than 70% of the total seven PCBs in both the liver and perirenal fat samples. In the male roe deer, significantly higher concentrations of HCB, p,p'-DDE and PCBs were found in the liver than in the perirenal fat (P < 0.001). Hepatic levels of p,p'-DDE and PCBs were significantly higher in males than in females (P < 0.05 and P < 0.001, respectively). No significant differences in organochlorine concentrations were observed between juvenile and adult males in either tissue sample (P > 0.05). Females were not statistically tested because they were all adults. The levels of organochlorine contaminants were well below those associated with adverse reproductive effects and lethality in mammals.  相似文献

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides, such as hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis(4-chlorophenyl)ethylene (p,p'-DDE) are compounds widespread in the environment, highly lipophilic, and accumulate in biological systems. The newborn are exposed to these organochlorine compounds across the placenta and through breastfeeding. This study reports the levels of selected PCB congeners, p,p'-DDE and HCB in maternal blood and cord blood samples collected at delivery between November and December 1999 from 44 women living in the urban area of Antwerp, Belgium. Results show that all newborns contained detectable levels of PCBs, p,p'-DDE and HCB. The median concentration of PCBs was 450 pg/ml and ranged between 120 and 1580 pg/ml, while the median concentrations of HCB and p,p'-DDE were 70 and 490 pg/ml, respectively. Concentrations of PCBs and p,p'-DDE in cord blood (ng/ml) were positively associated with concentrations in maternal blood (ng/ml) (coefficients=0.74 and 0.92, P<0.05). We conclude that all investigated organochlorine compounds have an efficient transplacental transfer.  相似文献

Twenty-five ringed seals (Phoca hispida) were sampled in 1994 at each of four areas in Greenland, three on the west coast and one on the east coast. Seal blubber samples were analysed for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs, IUPAC Nos. 28, 31, 52, 101, 105, 118, 138, 153, 156 and 180), DDTs (p,p'-DDE, p,p'-DDD, p,p'-DDT), hexachlorocyclohexanes (alpha-, beta- and gamma-HCH), hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and trans-nonachlor. A number of the seals (n = 56) were also analysed for toxaphene (total toxaphene and single congeners: CHB Nos. 26, 32, 50 and 62). The overall geometric means (and ranges) found in seals were in microgram kg-1 wet wt. for sigma PCBs: 452 (85-4200), sigma DDTs: 607 (97-6040), sigma HCHs: 123 (51-382), HCB: 13 (3-27), trans-nonachlor: 83 (21-1236) and total toxaphene: 263 (71-950). The geometric means for HCB, trans-nonachlor, toxaphenes and the sums of PCBs and DDTs were higher for the east coast samples than for those from the west coast, and a decreasing trend in concentrations followed the east Greenland current. No geographical trend was apparent for HCHs. Differences in concentrations between females and males were only significant for HCB and HCH within certain age classes and sampling areas. A tendency for concentrations to increase with age was observed, but was not statistically significant. Principal component analyses for PCB congeners revealed that the proportion of higher chlorinated PCBs (Cl atoms > or = 6) decreased with decreasing concentrations of PCBs found for the four sampling areas. No differences between the higher and lower chlorinated PCBs were seen in females and males, but a higher proportion of CB-105 and CB-118 compared to CB-52 and CB-101 was seen in male seals compared to female seals.  相似文献

For the analysis of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in sediments and water, a multiresidue analysis method based on gas chromatography with electron capture detection (GC/ECD) was developed. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) using Oasis HLB cartridges was also applied in sample extraction. Mean recoveries were satisfactory with 72-103% and 71-103% for water and sediment, respectively. Twenty-one OCPs were analyzed in water and surface sediment samples from Beijing Guanting reservoir. Total concentrations of 21 OCPs were 16.7-791 ng/l (mean 234 ng/l), 275-1,600 ng/l (mean 644 ng/l), 5250-33,400 ng/kg (mean 13,000 ng/kg) in surface water, pore water and sediment (dry weight), respectively. P, p'-DDE, delta-HCH, aldrin, gamma-HCH and beta-HCH are the most abundant compounds in water while p, p'-DDE, o, p'-DDT, beta-HCH, delta-HCH, p, p'-DDT and aldrin accounted for about 85% of total 21 OCPs in sediment in Beijing Guanting reservoir. Concentrations of OCPs were high both in water and sediment samples in Beijing Guanting reservoir for municipal water supply. The data provides information on the levels and sources of OCPs in Guanting reservoir. The study indicated that measures should be taken to decrease OCPs residues in order to improve the quality of municipal water supply in Beijing.  相似文献

Glaucous gulls (Larus hyperboreus) and Icelandic gulls (Larus glaucoides) were sampled in 1994 from four different areas in Greenland, three on the west coast and one on the east coast. Livers of 93 glaucous gulls and seven Icelandic gulls were analysed for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs, IUPAC Nos. 28, 31, 52, 101, 105, 118, 138, 153, 156 and 180), DDTs (p,p'-DDE, p,p'-DDD, p,p'-DDT), hexachlorocyclohexanes (alpha-, beta- and gamma-HCH), hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and trans-nonachlor (TNC). The overall geometric means of the concentrations found in glaucous gull liver were for sigma PCBs 388 (range 20-5557), for sigma DDTs 363 (17-8604), sigma HCHs 7.4 (1-53), HCB 47 (4-594) and trans-nonachlor 19 (3-187) micrograms kg-1 wet wt., respectively. The geometric means of concentrations in Icelandic gull liver were for sigma PCBs 112 (24-435), for sigma DDTs 95 (25-298), sigma HCHs 2.9 (1.4-5.2), HCB 22 (8-58) and trans-nonachlor 5.1 (2.4-8.6) micrograms kg-1 wet wt., respectively. Significantly (P = 0.05) higher concentrations of PCBs, DDTs and HCHs were found in glaucous gulls at Ittoqqortoormiit at the east coast than in gulls from Qeqertarsuaq at the west coast of Greenland. This tendency was also seen for HCB and trans-nonachlor, but the differences were not statistically significant (P = 0.05). A decreasing trend in organochlorine concentrations followed the East Greenland Current, flowing from north to south down the east coast and to the north on the west coast. Gulls taken from the most northerly sampling area of the west coast, however, showed slightly higher concentrations than those from the central west coast. There appeared to be a tendency for higher concentrations to be found in males than females, and in adults compared to young glaucous gulls, but the differences were not statistically significant (P = 0.05). The concentration ranges found in gulls from Greenland were similar to those reported previously for gulls from northern Norway and Russia. A principal component analysis revealed no obvious link between the presence of higher chlorinated PCBs and higher PCB concentrations in glaucous gulls. Significantly higher proportions of higher chlorinated PCBs were found in glaucous gulls than in Icelandic gulls, and in adult glaucous gulls compared to young gulls of 1-2 calendar years. As no such difference was found between female and male gulls it seems that PCBs of all degrees of chlorination may be passed equally well from mother to offspring.  相似文献

Analysis of single marker substances in serum could provide cost-effective assessment of human exposure to complex mixtures of organochlorines. We studied the serum concentrations of 10 polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners and 11 chlorinated pesticides and some of their metabolites in samples collected from 120 Swedish men (mean age 63 years, range 40-74 years) from the general Swedish population. The median concentrations of individual PCB congeners increased in the order PCB 52 < PCB 101 < or = PCB28 < PCB 105 < PCB 167 < PCB 156 < PCB 118 < PCB 138 < PCB 180 < PCB 153. The concentrations of o,p'-DDT, o,p'-DDE, p,p'-DDD, alpha-HCH and gamma-HCH were in most cases below the quantification limit (2-4 ng/g lipid). Among the other chlorinated pesticides the median concentration increased in the order oxychlordane (12 ng/g lipid) < p,p'-DDT < trans-nonachlor < beta-HCH < HCB < p,p'-DDE (586 ng/g lipid). The observed concentrations of PCB and chlorinated pesticides were in the same range as those found in similar groups of men from Sweden and Norway, but lower than those found in male populations with recent occupational exposure or high environmental exposure. Strong relationships were found between the concentrations of single mono- and di-ortho PCB congeners and groups of PCB congeners in serum. In our group of men PCB 153 was a good marker substance for the concentration of sigma PCB and sigma di-ortho PCB concentrations in serum. Moreover, among the mono-ortho PCB congeners analyzed, PCB 156 could be used as a marker for the sigma mono-ortho PCB TEQ concentrations in serum in the studied group. No useful marker substances were found among DDT compounds and other chlorinated pesticides and metabolites, except for trans-nonachlor which predicted the concentration of the metabolite oxychlordane fairly well.  相似文献

Surface sediment samples from the Guba Penchenga and adjacent areas: Varangerfjord, Guba Malaya Volokovaya and Guba Bol'shaya Volokovaya (south-western Barents Sea) collected in March-April 1997 were analysed for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), chlorinated pesticides: p,p'-DDT, p,p'-DDE, p,p'-DDD, alpha- and gamma-HCH, and hexachlorobenzene (HCB). Mean summation operator PAH (sum of the two- to six-ring PAHs) concentration in sediments from the Guba Pechenga (1481 ng/g dry wt.) was significantly higher than in sediments from adjacent areas (252 ng/g dry wt.), where PAH contamination levels were similar to reported for unpolluted sediments of the northern Norway fjords and open parts of the Barents Sea. Differences between HCB levels as well as summation operator HCH (sum of alpha- and gamma-HCH) levels found in Guba Pechenga sediments and adjacent area sediments were not significant. Concentrations of these contaminants varied in ranges 0.28-1.76 and 0.05-0.68 ng/g dry wt., respectively, and were consistent with literature data on PAH levels in sediments from the northern Norway harbours, Kola Bay (Russia) and south-eastern part of the Barents Sea. Average total DDT concentration in Guba Pechenga sediments (10.5 ng/g dry wt.) was one and 2-3 orders higher than those found in sediments from the Pechora Sea and from the seas of eastern Arctic, respectively, however, it was comparable with DDT levels reported for harbours of northern Norway and Kola Bay. Significant difference between total DDT levels in Guba Pechenga and in the adjacent areas (mean 1.8 ng/g) was found. Among compounds of DDT family, p,p'-DDT isomer prevailed in all sediment samples indicating a possible local 'fresh' DDT source. Mean summation operator PCB (sum of PCB-28, 31, 52, 101, 118, 105, 153, 138, 156, 180, 209) concentration in the Guba Pechenga sediments (12.8 ng/g dry wt.) was significantly higher than in sediments of adjacent areas (2.1 ng/g dry wt.), but it was lower in comparison with summation operator PCB levels reported for the northern Norway harbours and Kola Bay sediments. The highest levels of contaminants were found in sediments collected close to the Liinakhamari harbour. The origin of both PAHs and OCs in the Guba Pechenga sediments is a combination of local sources and long-range transport from lower latitudes.  相似文献

1,1,1-trichloro-2,2'-bis(4-chlorophenyl)ethane (DDT) exhibits its long persistence in the environment, unusual bioaccumulation, effects on wildlife, and the possibility of long-term adverse effects on human health, especially reproductive toxicity. Despite the prohibition of most persistent organochlorine pesticides in China, the presence of organochlorine residue, including DDT, has been widely indicated in environmental substance. However, scarce information is available about accumulative levels of DDT in human tissues in China. To evaluate levels of DDT and its potential effects on women and children's health in a Chinese pesticide-exposed area, we recruited 50 pairs of mother-child and 50 postpartum women, and determined the levels of total DDT and its four main metabolites (p,p'-DDE, p,p'-DDT, p,p'-DDD, o,p'-DDT) in venous blood, breast milk and umbilical blood cord by gas chromatography. Accordingly, data on reproductive outcomes of mothers and postpartum women and healthy status of children and infants were gathered through a questionnaire and medical examinations. Furthermore, we also assayed the DDT levels of some environmental samples (soil, food, milk, et al.). The levels of DDT in children's blood were higher than that in the women's. As compared to breast milk, the umbilical blood cord and the ventral fat individually demonstrated a significantly lower and higher level of DDT in the postpartum women. DDT was lower in milk and crucian carp than in the soil near the chemical plant. p,p'-DDT and p,p'-DDE were the main metabolites of DDT. Our findings suggested the cumulative effect of DDT in human body in Tianjin, China.  相似文献

The Cananéia estuary is an important biological area on the southeast coast of Brazil. In the past, it was impacted by both chlorinated pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) due to its natural location. The marine tucuxi dolphin (Sotalia fluviatilis) is a top predator in this ecosystem and can be found year round in Cananéia estuarine waters that represent an important nursing area for the species. This work investigated chlorinated compounds in the blubber of nine individuals from the Cananéia estuary. Residue levels of DDTs (0.541-125 microg g(-1) lipid wt.) were the highest, followed by PCBs (0.2-9.22 microg g(-1) lipid wt.), mirex (0.014-0.312 microg g(-1) lipid wt.), chlordanes (0.001-0.047 microg g(-1) lipid wt.), HCHs (<0.003-0.044 microg g(-1) lipid wt.), and HCB (n.d.-0.024 microg g(-1) lipid wt.). The mean p,p'-DDE/Sigma DDT ratio was approximately 0.8 and is indicative of the former DDT application in the study area. PCB contamination is suggested to be associated with atmospheric transport and relative proximity to the Cubat?o industrial complex-the most important along the Brazilian coast. Low levels of HCHs and HCB can be attributed to their high volatility in tropical environments. Concentrations of organochlorines in the blubber of marine tucuxis from the Cananéia estuary were lower than levels found in small cetacean species from developed countries, where the input of these compounds was considerably greater than in Brazil. At extremes, male dolphins can present DDT burden several orders of magnitude higher than females. Despite the high levels of total DDT found in males, the major detected compound was p,p'-DDE which is considered to be of low toxicity.  相似文献

Geographical variation of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) was studied in blood samples from 90 adult female polar bear (Ursus maritimus) from Svalbard, Franz Josef Land, Kara Sea, East-Siberian Sea and Chukchi Sea. In all regions, oxychlordane was the dominant OCP. Regional differences in mean levels of HCB, oxychlordane, trans-nonachlor, alpha-HCH, beta-HCH and p,p'-DDE were found. The highest levels of oxychlordane, trans-nonachlor and DDE were found in polar bears from Franz Josef Land and Kara Sea. HCB level was lowest in polar bears from Svalbard. Polar bears from Chukchi Sea had the highest level of alpha- and beta-HCH. The lowest alpha-HCH concentration was found in bears from Kara Sea. In all the bears, summation operator HCHs was dominated by beta-HCH. The geographical variation in OCP levels and pattern may suggest regional differences in pollution sources and different feeding habits in the different regions. Polar bears from the Western Russian Arctic were exposed to higher levels of chlordanes and p,p'-DDE than polar bears from locations westwards and eastwards from this region. This may imply the presence of a significant pollution source in the Russian Arctic area. The study suggests that the western Russian Arctic is the most contaminated region of the Arctic and warrants further research.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), and 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethane (DDT) are ubiquitous compounds with carcinogenic and teratogenic properties. They are chemically very stable and lipophilic and, therefore, accumulate in our food-chain. They are prenatally transmitted from mother to foetus, and mother's milk due to its high lipid content is an elimination pathway of special importance. Therefore, breast-feeding has been held responsible for elevated concentrations of these organochlorine compounds as well as for harmful effects in children later in life. METHODS: Blood samples (2.5 ml) were taken from each 10 breast-fed and bottle-fed infants at 6 weeks of age. Blood specimens were immediately centrifuged, and serum was stored in glass tubes at -20 degrees C until analysis. Three higher chlorinated PCB congeners (IUPAC nos. 138, 153 and 180), HCB, and the organic metabolite of DDT, p,p < -DDE, were analysed with capillary gas chromatography with electron capture detection. Reliability was tested with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. RESULTS: There were no differences between the study groups of breast-fed and bottle-fed infants with regard to sex distribution, gestational age, birth-weight, age of the mothers, and smoking behaviour of the parents. In contrast, serum concentrations of all organochlorine compounds were significantly higher (P < 0.0001) in breast-fed than in bottle-fed infants (mean): PCB 138, 0.38 vs. 0.10 microg/l; PCB 153, 0.49 vs. 0.1 microg/l; PCB 180, 0.31 vs. 0.04 microg/l; SigmaPCB, 1.19 vs. 0.29 microg/l; HCB, 0.13 vs. 0.04 microg/l; p,p < -DDE, 1.05 vs. 0.18 microg/l. CONCLUSIONS: Breast-feeding significantly increases the pollution of our infants with different organochlorine compounds as early as at 6 weeks of age. The progress of the present study will show whether this pollution will further increase with longer duration of breast-feeding, and whether breast-feeding bears any health risks for our offspring.  相似文献

The ivory gull (Pagophila eburnea) is a circumpolar marine bird which has recently been listed as an endangered species in Canada. To determine whether contaminants may be playing a role in the population decline of this species, ivory gull eggs collected in 1976, 1987 and 2004 from Seymour Island in the Canadian Arctic were analyzed for organochlorines, polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and non-ortho PCBs. This study also provides the first account of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs) and polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) in ivory gulls. The most quantitatively abundant legacy organochlorines found in the ivory gull eggs were p,p'-DDE, SigmaPCB and oxychlordane. Concentrations of the organochlorines analyzed either decreased or showed little change between 1976 and 2004. Concentrations of SigmaPCDD in ivory gull eggs were greater than SigmaPCDF, and the non-ortho PCBs (primarily PCB-126) contributed the largest fraction to the total TEQ value in all years sampled. Concentrations of PCDDs, PCDFs and SigmaTEQ decreased from 1976 to 2004. In contrast, concentrations of the PBDEs steadily increased between 1976 and 2004 driven primarily by increases in BDE-47. Although concentrations of the persistent chlorinated compounds (i.e. organochlorine pesticides, PCBs, PCDDs, PCDFs) reported in this study were below published toxicological threshold values for eggs of wild birds, we cannot rule out the possibility of synergistic/additive, sublethal effects. Very few studies have been carried out to evaluate the exposure-effect relationship of the persistent brominated compounds in avian species. Given the scarcity of information on toxicity threshold levels for PBBs and PBDEs in avian species, coupled with the trend toward increasing concentrations in ivory gulls, continued monitoring and further toxicological studies of these compounds are warranted.  相似文献
