Simulation of the solidification of the melt in the Vanyukov furnace in the case of emergency stoppage

A mathematical model of the Vanyukov furnace, which makes it possible to predict the behavior of an object in the emergency operational mode (upon the disconnection of the oxygen supply) and develop an effective system of additional heating which damps the consequences of the emergency mode and lowers the costs for the renovation of the furnace operation, is created. It is shown how solidification upon cooling the furnace with time is simulated using the enthalpy and porosity method. The mathematical model is adopted for existing production conditions, which are weakly defined. The energy characteristics of the mode for the solidifying furnace bath, which ensures its holding for a long time in the ready state to rapid firing, are found. Thus, the problem of excessively expensive furnace firing after prolonged production stoppage is solved in the conjugated statement with a calculation of the heating system of the overbath space.     

Relative Comparison of the Local Recalibration of the Temperature-Based Evapotranspiration Equation for the Korea Peninsula

It is well known that local calibration is subject to improving the performance of the temperature-based equation because that calibration includes the influence of the local climate characteristics. This paper evaluates different local recalibrations (the regression-based, one-parameter, and three-parameter methods) of the Hargreaves equation at 21 meteorological stations. The FAO-56 Penman-Monteith is used to describe the control condition against which each calibration method is then assessed. The one-parameter method provides the strength for inland areas, while it presents the worst performance for coastal areas. The regression-based calibration provides slightly better performance for coastal areas. It is true that the difference between the estimates of ETo using the different calibration methods is relatively small and that the difference does not provide the benchmark control that is desirable to demonstrate a significant difference. In relative terms, the regression-based and the three-parameter methods can be an alternative for both inland and coastal areas, giving similar level of accuracy. However, the one-parameter presents may be an alternative only for inland areas. This study can provide guidelines for crop production, water resources conservation, irrigation scheduling, and environmental assessment.     

Cell division as the determining factor in the index of the proliferative level of cultured cells

Theoretical substantiation of dynamics of cultured cell average size as a basis for the index of rate of their proliferative activity in population is presented. Mathematic formula deduced by the author for this index is described. Some examples for its use are given and the name for the index is proposed.     

Role of the C-terminal tryptophan residue for the structure-function of the alphavirus capsid protein

The Semliki Forest virus capsid protein is a multifunctional protein which packages genomic RNA into nucleocapsid structures and binds to viral spike protein during budding. In addition, the capsid protein has an autoproteolytic activity whereby the C-terminal tryptophan is used as the substrate for cotranslational cleavage of the viral structure polyprotein. The autoproteolytic domain of the capsid protein has a chymotrypsin-like fold but has two additional short beta-strands which place the tryptophan into the active site. Here, we have substituted the C-terminal tryptophan of Semliki Forest virus capsid protein for alanine, arginine and phenylalanine and analysed the effects on different functions of the C protein such as nucleocapsid formation, spike binding and autoproteolytic activity. We found that (i) tryptophan is a better substrate for the autoproteolytic activity, (ii) the wild-type tryptophan is the only residue that allows efficient viral growth and (iii) an aromatic residue is important for correct initial folding and stability of the protein.

The role of the psychologist in advocacy for the handicapped.

Advocacy is a service independent of generic treatment services provided to the mentally handicapped. It is emerging because of the need for changes in mental health. There is both a compelling need and opportunity for psychologists to become advocates for the mentally handicapped. It is commented that it is a role, however, too seldom played by psychologists and that this underrepresentation is a disservice to both psychologists and their clients. Analytical Solution of the Possio Integral Equation for the Sonic Case

We present a closed form analytical solution of the Possio integral equation of aeroelasticity for the sonic case M = 1, both time-domain and Laplace domain, including a numerical example for the flutter speed, where the flutter mode differs from that for M = 0. A noteworthy feature is that the Kutta condition is not satisfied and is not needed for uniqueness of solution.
