Hydrogen and iso-butanol are notable potential alternative fuels. Hydrogen addition under air dilution conditions was investigated in this study in an attempt to enhance the thermal efficiency of spark ignition (SI) engines fueled with iso-butanol-gasoline (B33) at partial load. Hydrogen appears to have positive effect on combustion progress that is prolonged during air dilution. Under lean hydrogen-enriched mixture conditions, the brake thermal efficiency was increased by about 4% and combustion instability was reduced; the lean burn limit migrated from 1.4 to 1.8 for B33 engine after hydrogen addition. Under lean burn conditions, the durations of initial flame development and rapid burning were shortened markedly by hydrogen; both were extended by air dilution. After hydrogen addition, the unburnt HC emissions of iso-butanol-gasoline decreased markedly and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions decreased slightly. NOx emissions from hydrogen-enriched iso-butanol-gasoline increased as lambda grew near to 1.0, at a significant reduction with increasing excess air rate regardless of fuel type. The combination of hydrogen addition and air dilution exhibited a positive inhibition on particle matter (PM) emissions regardless particle in nucleation or the accumulation mode, and the particle surface concentration was reduced significantly. Finally, an improved combustion progress was observed after hydrogen addition during air dilution, as well as a higher brake thermal efficiency and wider lean burn limit with acceptable combustion stability.  相似文献

Experimental studies of premixed, turbulent, gaseous explosion flames in a fan-stirred bomb are reported. The turbulence was uniform and isotropic, while changes in the rms turbulent velocity were achieved by changes in the speed of the fans. Central spark ignitions created mean spherical flame propagation. The spatial distributions of burned and unburned gases during the propagation were measured from the Mie scattering of tobacco smoke in a thin planar laser sheet. The plane was located just in front of the central spark gap and was generated by a copper vapor laser operating at a pulse rate of 4.5 kHz. High-speed schlieren images also were captured simultaneously.The distributions of the proportions of burned and unburned gases around circumferences were found for all radii at all stages of the explosion, and mean values of these proportions were derived as a function of the mean flame radius. The flame brush thickness increased with flame radius. The way the turbulent burning velocity is defined depends on the chosen associated flame radius. Various definitions are scrutinized and different flame radii presented, along with the associated turbulent burning velocities. Engulfment and mass turbulent burning velocities are compared. It is shown how the latter might conveniently be obtained from schlieren cine images. In a given explosion, the burning velocity increased with time and radius, as a consequence of the continual broadening of the effective spectrum of turbulence to which the flame was subjected. A decrease in the Markstein number of the mixture increased the turbulent burning velocity.  相似文献

A study of in-cylinder fuel-air mixing distributions in a firing gasoline-direct-injection engine is reported using planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) imaging. A multi-component fuel synthesised from three pairs of components chosen to simulate light, medium and heavy fractions was seeded with one of three tracers, each chosen to co-evaporate with and thus follow one of the fractions, in order to account for differential volatility of such components in typical gasoline fuels. In order to make quantitative measurements of fuel-air ratio from PLIF images, initial calibration was by recording PLIF images of homogeneous fuel-air mixtures under similar conditions of in-cylinder temperature and pressure using a re-circulation loop and a motored engine. This calibration method was found to be affected by two significant factors. Firstly, calibration was affected by variation of signal collection efficiency arising from build-up of absorbing deposits on the windows during firing cycles, which are not present under motored conditions. Secondly, the effects of residual exhaust gas present in the firing engine were not accounted for using a calibration loop with a motored engine.In order to account for these factors a novel method of PLIF calibration is presented whereby ‘bookend’ calibration measurements for each tracer separately are performed under firing conditions, utilising injection into a large upstream heated plenum to promote the formation of homogeneous in-cylinder mixtures. These calibration datasets contain sufficient information to not only characterise the quantum efficiency of each tracer during a typical engine cycle, but also monitor imaging efficiency, and, importantly, account for the impact of exhaust gas residuals (EGR). By use of this method EGR is identified as a significant factor in quantitative PLIF for fuel mixing diagnostics in firing engines.The effects of cyclic variation in fuel concentration on burn rate are analysed for different fuel injection strategies. Finally, mixture distributions for late injection obtained using quantitative PLIF are compared to predictions of computational fluid dynamics calculations.  相似文献

Recent high-speed imaging of ignition processes in spray-guided gasoline engines has motivated the development of the physically-based spark channel ignition monitoring model SparkCIMM, which bridges the gap between a detailed spray/vaporization model and a model for fully developed turbulent flame front propagation. Previously, both SparkCIMM and high-speed optical imaging data have shown that, in spray-guided engines, the spark plasma channel is stretched and wrinkled by the local turbulence, excessive stretching results in spark re-strikes, large variations occur in turbulence intensity and local equivalence ratio along the spark channel, and ignition occurs in localized regions along the spark channel (based upon a Karlovitz-number criteria).In this paper, SparkCIMM is enhanced by: (1) an extended flamelet model to predict localized ignition spots along the spark plasma channel, (2) a detailed chemical mechanism for gasoline surrogate oxidation, and (3) a formulation of early flame kernel propagation based on the G-equation theory that includes detailed chemistry and a local enthalpy flamelet model to consider turbulent enthalpy fluctuations. In agreement with new experimental data from broadband spark and hot soot luminosity imaging, the model establishes that ignition prefers to occur in fuel-rich regions along the spark channel. In this highly-turbulent highly-stratified environment, these ignition spots burn as quasi-laminar flame kernels. In this paper, the laminar burning velocities and flame thicknesses of these kernels are calculated along the mean turbulent flame front, using tabulated detailed chemistry flamelets over a wide range of stoichiometry and exhaust gas dilution. The criteria for flame propagation include chemical (cross-over temperature based) and turbulence (Karlovitz-number based) effects. Numerical simulations using ignition models of different physical complexity demonstrate the significance of turbulent mixture fraction and enthalpy fluctuations in the prediction of early flame front propagation. A third paper on SparkCIMM (companion paper to this one) focuses on the importance of molecular fuel properties and flame curvature on early flame propagation and compares computed flame propagation with high speed combustion imaging and computed heat release rates with cylinder pressure analysis.The goals of SparkCIMM development are to (a) enhance our fundamental understanding of ignition and combustion processes in highly-turbulent highly-stratified engine conditions, (b) incorporate that understanding into a physically-based submodel for RANS engine calculations that can be reliably used without modification for a wide range of conditions (i.e., homogeneous or stratified, low or high turbulence, low or high dilution), and (c) provide a submodel that can be incorporated into a future LES model for physically-based modeling of cycle-to-cycle variability in engines.  相似文献

This study investigates the effect of misfire and postfire on backfire in a hydrogen-fuelled automotive spark ignition engine. Backfire is a preignition phenomenon and the flame propagates toward the engine's intake manifold during the suction stroke. Postfire is a post-ignition phenomenon occurring in the exhaust manifold during the exhaust stroke and the flame propagates towards the exhaust manifold or backflow to the combustion chamber or combined both. Misfire occurs when cranking the engine (starting), fouled spark plug, and unoptimized spark timing. Several misfire cycles lead to an increase in the accumulation of unburnt hydrogen-air charge inside the cylinder and 13% hydrogen leaves the exhaust manifold resulting in postfire occurrence in a subsequent cycle. The postfire in the current cycle acting as an external ignition source for the preignition of the accumulated hydrogen-air charge results in backfire in the immediate next cycle. The misfire, postfire and backfire stall the engine operation due to a drop in indicated mean effective pressure. The experimental data indicates the backfire limiting equivalence ratio (BLER) should decrease with an increase in the engine speed as the equivalence ratio varies from 0.91 at 2000 rpm to 0.4 at 4900 rpm. As too advancement of spark timing increases the probability of misfire leading to postfire and backfire, the engine must be operated at backfire limiting spark timing to avoid misfire, postfire, and backfire occurrence. An important point emerged from this study that misfire without postfire does not lead to backfire occurrence. Physical mechanisms and mitigative measures for misfire, postfire and backfire are discussed in detail.  相似文献

Combustion in stratified mixtures is envisaged in practical energy systems such as direct-injection spark-ignited (DISI) car engines, gas turbines, for reducing CO2 and pollutant emissions while protecting their efficiency. The mixture gradients change the fundamental properties of the flame, especially by a difference in temperature and composition between the burnt gases and those of a flame consuming a homogeneous mixture. This paper presents an investigation of the properties of the flame propagating in a lean homogeneous mixture after ignition in a richer mixture according to the magnitude of the stratification. Three magnitudes of stratification are investigated. The local flame burning velocity is determined by an original PIV algorithm developed previously. The local equivalence ratio in the fresh gases is measured from anisole PLIF. From the simultaneous PIV–PLIF measurements, the flame burning velocities conditioned on the local stretch rate and equivalence ratio in fresh gases are measured. The flame propagating through the homogeneous lean mixture has properties depending on the ignition conditions in the stratified layer. The flame propagating in the lean mixture is back-supported longer for ignition under the richer condition. The change of stretch sensitivity and burning velocity of the flame in the lean mixture is measured over time for the three magnitudes of mixture stratification investigated. The ignition in richer mixtures compensates for the nonequidiffusion effect of lean propane flame and sustains its robustness to stretch. The flame propagation in the lean homogeneous mixture is enhanced by ignition in a richer stratified layer, as much by their robustness to stretch as by an increase in the flame speed or the burning velocity. The decay time of this influence of the stratification, called memory effect, is determined.  相似文献

Methane-air partially premixed flames subjected to grid-generated turbulence are stabilized in a two-slot burner with initial fuel concentration differences leading to stratification across the stoichiometric concentration. The fuel concentration gradient at the location corresponding to the flame base is measured using planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) of acetone in the non-reacting mixing field. Simultaneous PLIF of the OH radical and particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements are performed to deduce the flow velocity and the flame front. These flames exhibit a convex premixed flame front and a trailing diffusion flame, with flow divergence upstream of the flame, as indicated by the instantaneous OH–PLIF, Mie scattering images, and PIV data. The mean streamwise velocity profile attains a global minimum just upstream of the flame front due to expansion of a gases caused by heat release. The flame speed measured just upstream of the flame leading edge is normalized with respect to the turbulent stoichiometric flame speed that takes into account variations in turbulent intensity and integral length scale. The turbulent edge flame speed exceeds the corresponding stoichiometric premixed flame speed and reaches a peak at a certain concentration gradient. The mean tangential strain at the flame leading edge locally peaks at the concentration gradient corresponding to the peak flame speed. The strain varies non-monotonically with the flame curvature unlike in a non-stratified curved premixed flame. The mechanism of peak flame speed is explained as the competition between availability of hot excess reactants from the premixed flame branches to the flame stretch induced due to flame curvature. The results suggest that the stabilization of lifted turbulent partially premixed flames occurs through an edge flame even at a relatively gentle concentration gradient. The strain is also evaluated along the flame front; it peaks at the flame leading edge and decreases gradually on either side of the leading edge. The present results also show qualitatively similar trends as those of laminar triple flames.  相似文献

A new technique was developed and applied to the study of flame structure and flame-vortex interaction in turbulent premixed flames. Turbulent premixed flames were probed using simultaneous stereo particle image velocimetry (PIV) and a double-pulsed acetone planar laser-induced fluorescence system (PLIF). Two double-pulsed Nd:YAG lasers operating at 532 and 266 nm were used for the PIV and acetone PLIF measurements, respectively. The stereo PIV images were acquired using two double-frame CCD cameras, and two ICCD cameras were used to capture the PLIF signal. The diagnostic system was applied to study turbulent methane-air stoichiometric premixed flames at relatively high Reynolds numbers. Flame merging and the creation of pockets of both products and reactants were detected, and a very strong interaction between the flame front and the vortex structures was suggested in the simultaneous PIV/PLIF images. Double-pulsed PLIF data obtained for different time delays allowed statistical study of flame development. Three-dimensional turbulent fluxes of mean progress variable were obtained. It was shown that the fluxes obey the gradient diffusion hypothesis. The proposed diagnostic increases flexibility and range of measurements available for premixed flames.  相似文献

Due to increasingly stringent fuel consumption and emission regulation, improving thermal efficiency and reducing particulate matter emissions are two main issues for next generation gasoline engine. Lean burn mode could greatly reduce pumping loss and decrease the fuel consumption of gasoline engines, although the burning rate is decreased by higher diluted intake air. In this study, dual injection stratified combustion mode is used to accelerate the burning rate of lean burn by increasing the fuel concentration near the spark plug. The effects of engine control parameters such as the excess air coefficient (Lambda), direct injection (DI) ratio, spark interval with DI, and DI timing on combustion, fuel consumption, gaseous emissions, and particulate emissions of a dual injection gasoline engine are studied. It is shown that the lean burn limit can be extended to Lambda= 1.8 with a low compression ratio of 10, while the fuel consumption can be obviously improved at Lambda= 1.4. There exists a spark window for dual injection stratified lean burn mode, in which the spark timing has a weak effect on combustion. With optimization of the control parameters, the brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) decreases 9.05% more than that of original stoichiometric combustion with DI as 2 bar brake mean effective pressure (BMEP) at a 2000 r/min engine speed. The NOx emissions before three-way catalyst (TWC) are 71.31% lower than that of the original engine while the particle number (PN) is 81.45% lower than the original engine. The dual injection stratified lean burn has a wide range of applications which can effectively reduce fuel consumption and particulate emissions. The BSFC reduction rate is higher than 5% and the PN reduction rate is more than 50% with the speed lower than 2400 r/min and the load lower than 5 bar.  相似文献

A commercial swirl burner for industrial gas turbine combustors was equipped with an optically accessible combustion chamber and installed in a high-pressure test-rig. Several premixed natural gas/air flames at pressures between 3 and 6 bar and thermal powers of up to 1 MW were studied by using a variety of measurement techniques. These include particle image velocimetry (PIV) for the investigation of the flow field, one-dimensional laser Raman scattering for the determination of the joint probability density functions of major species concentrations, mixture fraction and temperature, planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) of OH for the visualization of the flame front, chemiluminescence measurements of OH* for determining the lift-off height and size of the flame and acoustic recordings. The results give insights into important flame properties like the flow field structure, the premixing quality and the turbulence–flame interaction as well as their dependency on operating parameters like pressure, inflow velocity and equivalence ratio. The 1D Raman measurements yielded information about the gradients and variation of the mixture fraction and the quality of the fuel/air mixing, as well as the reaction progress. The OH PLIF images showed that the flame was located between the inflow of fresh gas and the recirculated combustion products. The flame front structures varied significantly with Reynolds number from wrinkled flame fronts to fragmented and strongly corrugated flame fronts. All results are combined in one database that can be used for the validation of numerical simulations.  相似文献

基于两阶段燃油直喷的汽油机研究了首次喷油时刻、第2次喷油时刻、两阶段喷油比例以及点火时刻对起动首循环缸内燃烧离子电流特性的影响.分析了不同燃烧边界条件下直喷汽油机缸内燃烧反相离子电流峰值及其相位的变化,进而探讨了缸内压力及放热率之间的关系.此外,分析了分层燃烧直喷汽油机典型燃烧情况下的离子电流波形特征,并且对比了分层混合气和均质混合气燃烧模式下离子电流波形特征.结果表明,调整首次喷油时刻、第2次喷油时刻以及两阶段喷油比例主要是改变缸内混合气形成特性,尤其是火花塞附近的局部混合气浓度,影响了火焰传播速度,进而也影响了形成的离子电流的强弱.提前和推迟点火时刻均导致反相离子电流峰值减小.另外,4种典型的燃烧(失火、部分燃烧、伴有后燃以及正常燃烧)情况下,离子电流波形特征有着显著的差异,且反相离子电流峰值和积分信号在4种情况下依次增大,伴有后燃的情况下在做功冲程后期再次出现离子电流峰值波形.  相似文献

In this paper, a gasoline Wankel engine was modified and equipped with self-developed hybrid electronic control unit to experimentally investigate the effect of hydrogen-enrichment level on combustion characteristics of a gasoline Wankel engine at wild open throttle position and lean burn regime. Testing were carried out under constant engine speed of 3000 rpm and the lean operating limit of the original gasoline engine. The spark timing was set at 15 °BTDC. The hydrogen energy fraction in the intake was gradually increased from 0% to 10%. The results showed that hydrogen enrichment was effective on improving the combustion process through the shortened of the flame development and the flame propagation periods, advancing the central heat release, increasing the HRRmax and reducing the cyclic variation proportionally to the amount of hydrogen added to the air fuel mixture. Furthermore, increasing hydrogen fraction in the intake improves the engine economy by reducing the cooling loss.  相似文献

Lean combustion is an effective way for improving the spark-ignited (SI) engine performance. Unfortunately, due to the narrow flammability of gasoline, the pure gasoline-fueled engines sometimes suffer partial burning or misfire at very lean conditions. Hydrogen has many excellent combustion properties that can be used to extend the gasoline engine lean burn limit and improve the gasoline engine performance at lean conditions. In this paper, a 1.6 L port fuel injection gasoline engine was modified to be a hybrid hydrogen–gasoline engine (HHGE) fueled with the hydrogen–gasoline mixture by mounting an electronically controlled hydrogen injection system on the intake manifolds while keeping the original gasoline injection system unchanged. A self-developed hybrid electronic control unit (HECU) was used to flexibly adjust injection timings and durations of gasoline and hydrogen. Engine tests were conducted at 1400 rpm and a manifolds absolute pressure (MAP) of 61.5 kPa to investigate the performance of an HHGE at lean burn limits. Three hydrogen volume fractions in the total intake gas of 1%, 3% and 4.5% were adopted. For a specified hydrogen volume fraction, the gasoline flow rate was gradually reduced until the engine reached the lean burn limit at which the coefficient of variation in indicated mean effective pressure (COVimep) was 10%. The test results showed that COVimep at the same excess air ratio was obviously reduced with the increase of hydrogen enrichment level. The excess air ratio at the lean burn limit was extended from 1.45 of the original engine to 2.55 of the 4.5% HHGE. The engine brake thermal efficiency, CO, HC and NOx emissions at lean burn limits were also improved for the HHGE.  相似文献

This paper reports on numerical and experimental studies of a lean premixed low swirl stabilized methane/air flame. The burner is made up of a central perforated plate and an annular swirler. A premixed methane/air mixture at an equivalence ratio of 0.62 is injected to an ambient co-flow of air through the burner under atmospheric pressure and room temperature condition with a Reynolds number of 30,000. Stereoscopic Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and simultaneous OH/acetone Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) are used to characterize the flame front and the turbulence field downstream of the burner. The flame is stabilized in the low speed central region and in the inner shear-layer vortices, where ambient air dilution to the flame is found to eventually quench the reactions downstream. Rotational Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy (RCARS) measurements are carried out to characterize the temperature field and the relative oxygen mole fraction field, which enables quantification of the air dilution to the flame. The experimental data provides a challenging test case for numerical simulation models owing to the stratification of the mixture and quenching of the flame. Large eddy simulations are carried out using a three-scalar level-set G-equation flamelet model, which is shown to capture the basic flame characteristics and quenching at the trailing edge of the flame.  相似文献

Flame holding and blowoff characteristics of bluff-body stabilized, turbulent flames were measured in an enclosed rectangular duct with a triangular flame holder in vitiated, premixed flows. Blowoff stability margins were characterized with chemiluminescence measurements performed by high-speed imaging to capture flame dynamics during the approach to flame blow off. As the equivalence ratio was decreased, local extinctions along the flames interacting with shear layers surrounding the bluff body recirculation zone occurred with greater frequency and proximity to the wake stagnation zone. Decreased equivalence ratio resulted in extinction events at the trailing edge of the stagnation zone, which allowed reactants to be convected into the recirculation zone and burned behind the bluff body. Increasing reactant dilution of the recirculation zone eventually resulted in flame lift-off or extinction of the flame in the neighboring shear layer. These near field shear layer flames convected to the wake stagnation zone, and were eventually quenched. Simultaneous particle imaging velocimetry (PIV) and OH planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) measurements captured the flame edge location and aerodynamic behavior as blowoff was approached. Two-dimensional hydrodynamic stretch along the flame front and flow field vorticity maps were extracted from the combined PIV/OH PLIF data. The distribution of flame stretch shifted to greater values as the equivalence ratio decreased and is believed to be the cause of local flame extinction in the wake stagnation zone that starts the blowoff process.  相似文献

Research into novel internal combustion engines requires consideration of the diversity in future fuels in an attempt to reduce drastically CO2 emissions from vehicles and promote energy sustainability. Hydrogen has been proposed as a possible fuel for future internal combustion engines. Hydrogen’s wide flammability range allows higher engine efficiency with much leaner operation than conventional fuels, for both reduced toxic emissions and no CO2 gases. This paper presents results from an optical study of combustion in a spark-ignition research engine running with direct injection and port injection of hydrogen. Crank-angle resolved flame chemiluminescence images were acquired and post-processed for a series of consecutive cycles in order to calculate in-cylinder rates of flame growth. Laser induced fluorescence of OH was also applied on an in-cylinder plane below the spark plug to record detailed features of the flame front for a series of engine cycles. The tests were performed at various air-to-fuel ratios, typically in a range of φ = 0.50–0.83 at 1000 RPM with 0.5 bar intake pressure. The engine was also run with gasoline in direct-injection and port-injection modes to compare with the operation on hydrogen. The observed combustion characteristics were analysed with respect to laminar and turbulent burning velocities, as well as flame stretch. An attempt was also made to review relevant hydrogen work from the limited literature on the subject and make comparisons were appropriate.  相似文献

The role of a spark discharge in extending the operating limits of homogeneous change compression ignition (HCCI) combustion has been investigated using engine experiments and computational flame modeling. The flammability limits of ultra-dilute n-butane/air mixtures are calculated over ranges of temperature, pressure, and dilution levels relevant to HCCI operation. The results suggest that with the elevated temperatures required to achieve HCCI combustion the in-cylinder charge is capable of supporting a propagating flame over most of the HCCI operating regime. However, under light-load and idle conditions the dilution levels are too large and the spark has no effect on HCCI combustion. Thus, some other mechanism must be found to control combustion phasing under these conditions. Since the true eigenvalue for the flame propagation calculation is the mass burning rate and not the flame speed, these results demonstrate that using an arbitrary flame speed cut-off criteria for determining the dilution limit significantly underestimates the actual flammability ranges.  相似文献

The outward propagation and development of surface instability of the spark-ignited spherical premixed flames for methanol-air-nitrogen mixtures were experimentally studied by using a constant volume combustion chamber and a high-speed schlieren photography system. The laminar burning velocities, the mass burning fluxes, and the Markstein lengths were obtained at different equivalence ratios, dilution ratios, initial temperatures, and pressures. The laminar burning velocities and the mass burning fluxes give a similar curve versus the equivalence ratios. They increase with the increase of initial temperature and decrease with the increase of dilution ratio. The laminar burning velocity decreases with elevating the initial pressure, while the mass burning flux increases with the increase of the initial pressure. Markstein length decreases slightly with the increase of initial temperature for the rich mixtures. High initial pressure corresponds to low Markstein length. Markstein length increases with the increase of dilution ratio, which is more obvious when the mixture becomes leaner. Equivalence ratio has a slight impact on the development of the diffusive-thermal cellular structure at elevated initial pressures. The initial pressure has a significant influence on the occurrence of the flame front cellular structure. At the elevated pressures, the cracks on the flame surface branch and develop into the cell structure. These cells are bounded by cracks emitting a bright light, which may indicate soot formation. For very lean mixture combustion, the buoyancy effect and cooling effect from the spark electrodes have a significant impact on the flame propagation. The hydrodynamic instability, inhibited with the increase of initial temperature around the stoichiometric equivalence ratio, is enhanced with the increase of initial pressure and suppressed by mixture dilution.  相似文献
