A numerical study of unsteady mixed convection flows through an alumina-water nanofluid in a square cavity with inlet and outlet ports due to incoming flow oscillation is performed. It is found that an oscillating velocity at the inlet port cased to creating a periodic variation in the fluid flow and temperature field in the cavity after a certain time duration. The influence of the nanoparticle on the flow and temperature fields has been plotted and discussed. The effect of the oscillation frequency is concealed in a dimensionless number which is the Strouhal number. It is observed that the heat transfer is enhanced for all the Strouhal and Richardson numbers investigated by adding the nanoparticle to the base fluid. It is also found that the performance of the nanoparticle on the enhancement of the heat transfer at higher Richardson numbers is less than that of lower Richardson numbers.  相似文献

The lattice Boltzmann method is applied to simulate the thermal field and flow field of nanofluid natural convection in a square cavity. The heat transfer characteristics of nanofluid are compared with that of water to explore nanofluid heat transfer mechanism. The flow field shows different characters at different Rayleigh number and the average Nusselt number is obtained changing with Rayleigh number.  相似文献

In this study natural convection heat transfer of Cu–water nanofluid in a cold outer circular enclosure containing a hot inner sinusoidal circular cylinder in the presence of horizontal magnetic field is investigated numerically using the Control Volume based Finite Element Method (CVFEM). Both circular enclosure and inner cylinder are maintained at constant temperature. The governing equations of fluid motion and heat transfer in their vorticity stream function form are used to simulate the fluid flow and heat transfer. The effective thermal conductivity and viscosity of nanofluid are calculated using the Maxwell–Garnetts (MG) and Brinkman models, respectively. The calculations were performed for different governing parameters such as the Hartmann number, Rayleigh number, values of the number of undulations of the inner cylinder and nanoparticle volume fraction. The results indicate that in the absence of magnetic field, enhancement ratio decreases as Rayleigh number increases while an opposite trend is observed in the presence of magnetic field. Also it is found that the average Nusselt number is an increasing function of nanoparticle volume fraction, the number of undulations and Rayleigh numbers while it is a decreasing function of Hartmann number.  相似文献

Double diffusive mixed convection in a lid‐driven cavity filled with Cu–water nanofluid is studied in detail. Various numerical experiments are conducted under horizontal thermal and concentration gradients. Flow equations were solved in velocity vorticity form using Galerkin's weighted residual finite element method. The Maxwell‐Garnett model and Brinkman models are applied to predict the thermal conductivity and dynamic viscosity of the nanofluid, respectively. The effectiveness of a nanofluid on heat transfer enhancement with respect to change in Richardson number has been studied at different Reynolds numbers for variation in particle volume fraction from 0 to 0.05. Similarly, the effect of buoyancy ratio on heat and mass transfer is presented for buoyancy ratio in the range of ?25 to 25. Detailed contour plots comparing the streamlines, temperature, concentration with and without nanoparticles were presented for all the range of parameters considered. The role of particle concentration and change in type of nanofluid has been reported. The average Nusselt number has increased in all the cases where as the Sherwood number slightly decreased with an increase in particle volume fraction. The Ag–water nanofluid showed better improvement in heat transfer characteristics compared to other nanofluids for all Reynolds numbers and particle volume fractions.  相似文献

The current work investigated, numerically, enhancement of heat transfer in natural convection using CuO-water nanofluid in the presence of a magnetic field. The governing equations were discretized using the control volume method and solved numerically via the SIMPLE algorithm. For the case of absence of a magnetic field and for low Rayleigh number, the heat transfer was almost insensitive to the presence of nanoparticles. For moderate and high Rayleigh numbers, the presence of nanoparticles had an adverse effect on heat transfer at high volume fraction of nanoparticles. The highest reduction in heat transfer was registered for the case of Ra = 105. Contour maps are generated for the normalized Nusselt number (Nu*) to determine the optimum selection of volume fraction of nanoparticles and magnetic field that gives maximum heat transfer enhancement. The results demonstrated the effectiveness and practicality of using high values of magnetic field in enhancing heat transfer using nanofluids.  相似文献

In the present study, the effects of Cu and CuO nanoparticles' presence on mixed convection heat transfer in a lid‐driven cavity with a corrugated wall are investigated using the lattice Boltzmann method. The boundary fitting method with second‐order accuracy at both velocity and temperature fields is used to simulate the curved boundaries in the LBM. The problem is investigated for different Richardson numbers (0.1–10), volume fractions of nanoparticles (0–0.05), curve amplitudes (0.05–0.25), and phase shifts of corrugated wall (0–270) when the Reynolds number is equal to 25. The volume fraction of added nanoparticles to the water‐based fluid is less than 0.05 to make dilute suspensions. Results show that adding nanoparticles enhances the rate of heat transfer. It is found that nanoparticles have significant effects on both fluid flow and heat transfer of the mixed convection, especially for low Richardson numbers. A comparison between Cu and CuO nanoparticles shows the Cu nanoparticles have a better effect on heat transfer enhancement for all tested conditions. The results also represent the effective role of a corrugated wall on the rate of nanofluid heat transfer. It is observed that increasing the wavy wall's amplitude leads to a decrease of the average Nusselt numberfor a high Richardson number. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The heat transfer effectiveness of nanofluids is adversely affected by the delay in convection onset. The lesser effectiveness, when compared to that of base fluid, is observed in a range of nanofluid layer thickness. The heat transfer coefficient of water–Al2O3 nanofluid can be enhanced by sustaining the equilibrium between Rayleigh number, temperature, particle volume fraction, and enclosure aspect ratio. In this paper, the specific correlation of fluid layer thickness and the onset of convection, which can significantly dominate the heat transfer characteristics of nanofluids are investigated using the concept of critical Rayleigh number. The water layer thickness for convection onset is first experimentally assessed for different real-life heat flux densities. It is then performed for Al2O3–water nanofluid for varying volume fractions. With the increase in volume fraction even though thermal conductivity increases, the overall heat transfer enhancement of the nanofluid is reduced. Temperature involved (heat flux density), the volume fraction of the nanofluid used, nanofluid layer thickness (space availability for the cooling system), and mass of the nanoparticle influence heat transfer enhancement. A higher volume fraction may not always result in enhancement of heat transfer as far as nanofluids are concerned.  相似文献

This paper presents a numerical analysis of natural cooling of a right triangular heat source by a water–CuO nanofluid in a right triangular cavity that is under the influence of a horizontal magnetic field. A computational domain is defined and a numerical scheme based on the control volume formulation using the SIMPLE algorithm is developed. The convection–diffusion terms are discretised using a power-law scheme. The effects of the Rayleigh number, the solid volume fraction, the Hartmann number and the heat source position in the cavity on the heat transfer performance of the cavity are examined. The thermal performance of the cavity is enhanced as the Rayleigh number increases, the Hartmann number decreases and the distance of the heat source with the cold walls decreases. An optimum solid volume fraction is found that maximises the heat transfer at high Rayleigh numbers.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Natural convection heat transfer of a nanofluid in the presence of an electric field is investigated. The control volume finite element method (CVFEM) is utilized to simulate this problem. A Fe3O4–ethylene glycol nanofluid is used as the working fluid. The effect of the electric field on nanofluid viscosity is taken into account. Numerical investigation is conducted for several values of Rayleigh number, nanoparticle volume fraction, and the voltage supplied. The numerical results show that the voltage used can change the flow shape. The Coulomb force causes the isotherms to become denser near the bottom wall. Heat transfer rises with increase in the voltage supplied and Rayleigh number. The effect of electric field on heat transfer is more pronounced at low Rayleigh numbers due to the predomination of the conduction mechanism.  相似文献

Rayleigh–Benard (R-B) convection in water-based alumina (Al2O3) nanofluid is analyzed based on a single-component non-homogeneous volume fraction model (SCNHM) using the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). The present model accounts for the slip mechanisms such as Brownian and thermophoresis between the nanoparticle and the base fluid. The average Nusselt number at the bottom wall for pure water is compared to the previous numerical data for natural convection in a cavity and a good agreement is obtained. The parameters considered in this study include the Rayleigh number of the nanofluid, the volume fraction of alumina nanoparticle and the aspect ratio of the cavity. For the Al2O3/water nanofluid, it is found that heat transfer rate decreases with an increase of the volume fraction of the nanoparticle. The results are demonstrated and explained with average Nusselt number, isotherms, streamlines, heat lines, and nanoparticle distribution. The effect of nanoparticles on the onset of instability in R-B convection is also analyzed.  相似文献

A numerical investigation is performed into the natural convection heat transfer characteristics within an enclosed cavity filled with nanofluid. The left and right walls of the cavity have a complex-wavy geometry and are maintained at a low and high temperature, respectively. Meanwhile, the upper and lower walls of the cavity are both flat and insulated. The nanofluid is composed of Al2O3 nanoparticles suspended in pure water. In performing the analysis, the governing equations are formulated using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics and the complex-wavy-surface is modeled as the superimposition of two sinusoidal functions. The simulations examine the effects of the volume fraction of nanoparticles, the Rayleigh number and the complex-wavy-surface geometry parameters on the flow streamlines, isotherm distribution and Nusselt number within the cavity. The results show that for all values of the Rayleigh number, the Nusselt number, increases as the volume fraction of nanoparticles increases. In addition, it is shown that the heat transfer performance can be optimized by tuning the wavy-surface geometry parameters in accordance with the Rayleigh number. Overall, the results presented in this study provide a useful insight into potential strategies for enhancing the convection heat transfer performance within enclosed cavities with complex-wavy-wall surfaces.  相似文献

In this paper the effects of a magnetic field on mixed convection flow in a two‐sided lid‐driven cavity have been analyzed by the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). The Hartmann number varied from Ha = 0 to 100. The study has been conducted for different Richardson numbers (Ri) from 0.01 to 100 while the direction of the magnetic field was investigated in the x‐direction. Consequences demonstrate that the heat transfer augments with an increment of the Richardson number for different Hartmann numbers for two cases. The heat transfer declines with the growth of the magnetic field for various Richardson numbers for two cases. The difference between the values of heat transfer for the two cases at variant parameters is negligible but the trend of fluid flow for the two cases is multifarious. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A computational work has been done to investigate the effects of mixed convection of MHD flow in nanofluid filled and partially heated wavy walled lid-driven enclosure. Finite difference method is used to solve governing equations of mixed convection for different parameters as Hartmann number, Richardson number, nanoparticle volume rate in partially heated and wavy walled enclosure. It is found that the rate of heat transfer decreases with increasing the Hartmann number. The rate of heat transfer can be enhanced or reduced by increasing the volume fraction of nanoparticles based on Hartmann and Richardson numbers.  相似文献

The mixed convection fluid flow in a square cavity filled with AL2O3‐water non‐Newtonian nanofluid is numerically analyzed. The left and right vertical boundaries of the enclosure have been kept in the constant temperature. Remaining walls of the cavity have been considered to have adiabatic boundary condition. Two different cases have been considered. In the first case, left and right side walls have been moved vertically with constant speed Vb in opposite directions. In the second case, the directions of their motions have been reversed. The transport equations, written in terms of the primitive variables for the non‐Newtonian nanofluid, have been solved numerically using the finite volume method. The shear stresses were calculated using the Ostwald‐de Waele model for the shear‐thinning nanofluid. The model introduced by Patel et al was used to obtain the thermal conductivity of the nanofluid. The variation of the fluid flow with respect to the Richardson number and volume fraction of the nanoparticles was investigated through a parametric study. Even though increasing the volume fraction of nanoparticles leads to heat transfer enhancement, for the second case of this study, for Ri = 1, the average Nusselt number initially drops sharply by increasing the volume fraction of nanoparticles, then remains constant.  相似文献

In the present work, enhancement of convective heat transfer rate in three-dimensional U-shaped enclosures using nanofluids is numerically investigated. Two different types of nanoparticles, namely, Cu, and Al2O3, with pure water, are the considered single-phase nanofluids. Natural convection and geometric parameter effects on the averaged Nusselt numbers are investigated. Velocity vectors and isotherm fields for the Al2O3/H2O nanofluid are presented at various Rayleigh numbers. The governing dimensionless equations are solved using the commercial finite-volume-based computational fluid dynamics code, FLUENT. Our results are consistent with previously published predictions. In particular, heat transfer enhancement is found to increase with increasing nanoparticles volume fractions, Rayleigh numbers, as well as cooled wall length extensions.  相似文献

Entropy generation of an Al2O3–water nanofluid due to heat transfer and fluid friction irreversibility has been investigated in a square cavity subject to different side‐wall temperatures using a nanofluid for natural convection flow. This study has been carried out for the pertinent parameters in the following ranges: Rayleigh number between 104 and 107 and volume fraction between 0 and 0.05. Based on the obtained dimensionless velocity and temperature values, the distributions of local entropy generation, average entropy generation, and average Bejan number are determined. The results are compared for a pure fluid and a nanofluid. It is totally found that the heat transfer, and entropy generation of the nanofluid is more than the pure fluid and minimum entropy generation and Nusselt number occur in the pure fluid at any Rayleigh number. Results depict that the addition of nanoparticles to the pure fluid has more effect on the entropy generation as the Rayleigh number goes up.  相似文献

In this paper, natural convection and entropy generation of non-Newtonian nanofluid, using the Buongiorno's mathematical model in a cavity in the presence of a uniform magnetic field has been analyzed by Finite Difference Lattice Boltzmann method (FDLBM). The cavity is filled with nanofluid which the mixture shows shear-thinning behavior. This study has been performed for the certain pertinent parameters of Rayleigh number (Ra = 104 and 105), Hartmann number (Ha = 0, 15, 30), buoyancy ratio number (Nr = 0.1, 1, and 4), power-law index (n = 0.4–1), Lewis number (Le = 1, 5, and 10), Thermophoresis parameter (Nt = 0.1, 0.5, 1), and Brownian motion parameter (Nb = 0.1, 1, 5). The Prandtl number is fixed at Pr = 1. The Results indicate that the augmentation of Hartmann number causes heat and mass transfer to drop. The increase in Rayleigh number enhances heat and mass transfer for various power-law indexes. The alteration of the power-law index changes heat and mass transfer. In addition, the rise of Hartmann number declines the shear-thinning behavior. The increase in the Lewis number augments mass transfer while it causes heat transfer to drop. The rise of the Thermophoresis and Brownian motion parameters ameliorate mass transfer and declines heat transfer significantly. The augmentation of buoyancy ratio number enhances heat and mass transfer. The augmentation of the power-law index declines various entropy generations in different Rayleigh numbers and Hartmann numbers. The increase in Hartmann number declines total entropy generation in different Rayleigh numbers. In addition, the rise of Rayleigh number and Hartmann number causes Bejan number to drop in various power-law indexes. The enhancement of the Lewis number provokes the total irreversibility to rise. Further, the total entropy generation increases as the buoyancy ratio number augments. It was shown that the increase in the Brownian motion and Thermophoresis parameters enhance the total irreversibility.  相似文献

The aim of this work is to study laminar mixed convection heat transfer characteristics within an obstructed enclosure by using the Lattice Boltzmann method. Flow is driven by a top cold lid while other walls are stationary and adiabatic. Hot cylinders are located at different places inside the cavity to explore the best arrangement. Comparison of streamlines, isotherms, average Nusselt number are presented to evaluate the influence of Richardson number and location of cylinders on flow field and heat transfer. Results indicate that heat transfer decreases with a rise of Richardson number for all considered arrays of cylinders. Among them, horizontally‐located cylinders at the top of the cavity have the greatest heat transfer at all Richardson numbers. Horizontally located cylinders at the bottom of the cavity have the lowest heat transfer at Richardson numbers of 0.1 and 1 while the lowest heat transfer rate belongs to cross diagonal located cylinders at a Richardson number of 10.  相似文献

This paper presents a numerical investigation of the entropy generation and heat transfer in a ferrofluid (water and 4% Fe3O4 nanoparticles) filled cavity with natural convection using a two phase mixture model and control volume technique. The effect of applying a nonuniform magnetic field on the entropy generation and heat transfer in the cavity and also the interaction of magnetic force and the buoyancy force are investigated. Based on the obtained results, applying a magnetic field will enhance the heat transfer mechanism. Furthermore, by applying the nonuniform magnetic field on the ferrofluid filled cavity with natural convection, the total entropy generation is decreased considerably at higher Rayleigh numbers. Therefore, applying a magnetic field can be considered as a suitable method for entropy generation minimization in order to have high efficiency in the system.  相似文献

The objective of this paper is to investigate the conjugated heat transfer in a thick walled cavity filled with copper-water nanofluid. The analysis uses a two-dimensional rectangular enclosure under conjugated convective-conductive heat transfer conditions and considers a range of Rayleigh numbers. The enclosure was subjected to a constant and uniform heat flux at the left thick wall generating a natural convection flow. The thicknesses of the other boundaries are assumed to be zero. The right wall is kept at a low constant temperature while the horizontal walls are assumed to be adiabatic. A moveable divider is located at the bottom wall of the cavity. The governing equations are derived based on the conceptual model in the Cartesian coordinate system. The study has been carried out for the Rayleigh number in the range of 105 ≤ Ra ≤ 108, and for the solid volume fraction at 0 ≤ ? ≤ 0.05. Results are presented in the form of streamlines, isotherms, average Nusselt number and input heat absorption by the nanofluid. The effects of solid volume fraction of nanofluids, the location of the divider and also the value of the ambient convective heat transfer coefficient on the hydrodynamic and thermal characteristics of flow have been analyzed. An increase in the average Nusselt number was found with the solid concentration for the whole range of Rayleigh number. In addition, results show that the position of the divider and the ambient convective heat transfer coefficient have a considerable effect on the heat transfer enhancement.  相似文献
