We are developing a new reflective display technology, based on total internal reflection, which achieves a large difference between the maximum and minimum reflectance values. This yields a surface with greatly improved legibility under a wide range of illumination conditions. Such devices can display an image with a maximum reflectance ranging from 55% under uniform background illumination to over 85% under common non-uniform illumination conditions, even at viewing angles greater than 80° from the surface normal. This approach, which we call ‘CLEAR’ (Charged Liquid Electro-Active Response), uses polymeric microstructures to efficiently redirect incoming ambient light back toward the viewer. One advantage of this technique is the ability to achieve bright, full-color images over a wide range of viewing angles, much like ink printed on paper. The displayed image can be updated rapidly since switching from the reflective state to the absorptive state requires only about a half-micron of motion of absorbing material into the evanescent field associated with TIR. This new approach offers significant advantages in a number of reflective display applications.  相似文献

In this paper, the applicability of a zero‐polarizer reflective display (PNLC) and a single‐polarizer reflective display (Heilmeier guest host) for direct‐view applications is analyzed. A measurement set‐up is designed to analyze the applicability of all types of reflective displays. Simulation of the different types of illumination caused by the environmental light is essential for this set‐up. The measurements indicate that the contrast ratio and reflectance greatly depend on the type of illumination. It is demonstrated that the worst‐case illumination for one display technology may be the best‐case illumination for another one and vice versa.  相似文献

A review of the work performed on the Alvey project ‘Interactive DC powder EL display systems’ is presented. The research carried out resulted in new theories being presented for the mechanisms of luminance degradation in DC electroluminescent displays. Reflective displays are advantageous in applications requiring low power or daylight readability. However, there are no low‐cost reflective technologies capable of displaying bright colors. By employing photoluminescence to more efficiently use ambient light, we created a prototype display that provides bright, full color in a simple, low‐cost architecture. This prototype includes a novel electrokinetic shutter, a layer that incorporates patterned luminescent red, green, and blue sub‐pixel elements, and a novel optical out‐coupling scheme. The luminescent elements convert otherwise‐wasted portions of the incident spectrum to light in the desired color band, resulting in improved color saturation and lightness. This prototype provides a color gamut that is superior to competing reflective display technologies that utilize color filters in single‐layer side‐by‐side sub‐pixel architectures. The current prototype is capable of switching in <0.5 s; future displays based on an alternative electro‐optic shutter technology should achieve video rate operation. A transflective version of this technology has also been prototyped. The transflective version utilizes its backlight with a power efficiency that is at least three times that of a conventional liquid crystal display. These photoluminescence‐based technologies enable a host of applications ranging from low‐power mobile products and retail pricing signage to daylight readable signage for outdoor advertising segments.  相似文献

Bragg gratings are holographically recorded in polymer dispersed liquid crystal materials to create a stratified composite material known as holographically formed polymer dispersed liquid crystals (H-PDLCs). Through a photo-induced diffusion-counter diffusion process, a refractive index modulation is permanently created. By choosing proper pitches of gratings and geometry, the gratings can be utilized for reflective displays with high color-purity. By applying a sufficient voltage, the reflective displays can be turned on and off in sub-milliseconds. In this contribution, we review H-PDLC technology in the context of reflective display applications.  相似文献

Abstract— Bistable reflective cholesteric liquid‐crystal displays are low‐power displays that are suitable for a variety of applications ranging from signage to high‐resolution electronic books. Recent advancements have included higher brightness, full color, black and white from a single layer, and lighting solutions. Cholesteric displays also lend themselves to simple integration into flexible materials since they may be coated and printed. We have developed reflective cholesteric displays on thin flexible plastic substrates, as well as other unconventional substrates such as paper and drapable fabrics. This paper serves as a review for recent advances in the cholesteric‐display technology at Kent Displays.  相似文献

The European automotive industry requires frequent interaction and transfer of data between geographically dispersed designers and engineers at all stages of the product introduction process. The RACE CAR project identified and demonstrated Integrated Broadband Communications (IBC)-supported applications to support this process and improve competitiveness. User requirements for workstation-based, multi-media facilities including conferencing were identified. Two experiments were designed to investigate the role of face-to-face video and the means by which participants organise and control their interactions. These are critical issues in the multi-cultural, international environment of the European automotive industry. In the first experiment groups of three users solved a cooperative, screen-based, object manipulation task supported by different levels of communication. ‘Linked computers plus an audio link’ resulted in significantly faster completion times than either ‘audio alone’ or ‘linked computer plus audio and face-to-face video’. ‘Linked computers plus audio’ was also perceived as the most effective communications media. The passage of cursor via verbal agreement was successfully managed. Video was generally considered beneficial for initial introductions, assessing understanding and facilitating a stronger feeling of group identity.

In the second experiment, subjects were grouped under ‘chaired’ or ‘free-for-all’ conditions and linked via (1) audio and linked computers or (2) audio, linked computers and face-to-face video. The task was similar to Experiment 1 and attempts to introduce contention were made through adding hidden, sub-goals. The task took significantly less time to complete in the ‘video chaired’ condition than the ‘non-video chaired’ or ‘video free-for-all’ conditions. This suggests that video has an important role in enabling a chairperson to control the meeting. Contention was not successfully achieved.

The results of the experiments suggest face-to-face video may be useful in chaired meetings and to develop ‘team’ feeling. A free-for-all method of control passing was seen as most appropriate although problems in achieving contention in Experiment 2 meant the impact of disagreement was not fully investigated. The results are discussed in relation to the European automotive industry and areas for further study identified. Relevance to industry

The European automotive industry, which maintains distinct engineering functions in disparate countries, is striving to reduce the length of its design life cycle by improving communications between designers and engineers. The studies described in this paper provide information of use to the developers and procurers of systems intended to support this process. The project described is concerned with the development of a practical system for interpreting carotid angiograms. The general requirements of such a system are identified and some of the design considerations are discussed. The analysis strategies and types of knowledge used by an expert in recognizing and naming vessels and categorizing abnormalities on a single-plane angiogram are described- Two distinct types of knowledge are identified: ‘facts’ knowledge which is drawn from various areas of science, and ‘strategy’ knowledge which determines how the facts should be used. It is suggested that confidence parameters should be associated with each type of knowledge and these should be used in the control of the analysis of an angiogram. The ‘facts’ and ‘strategy’ knowledge bases have a hierarchical structure which, if exploited, would enable the system to be easily adapted for use in other application areas.  相似文献

A computationally fast top-down recursive algorithm for connected component labelling using linear quadtrees is presented. The input data structure used is a linear quadtree representing only black leaf nodes. The boundary matching approach used ensures that at most two adjacencies of any black leaf node are considered. Neighbour searching is carried out within restricted subsets of the input quadtree. The time and space complexities of the algorithm are O(Bn) and O(B) respectively for a linear quadtree with B black leaves constructed from a binary array of size 2n × 2n. Simulations show the algorithm to be twice as fast as an existing algorithm that uses an identical input data structure. The top-down algorithm presented can also be used to efficiently generate a linear quadtree representing all nodes — ‘grey’, ‘black’ and ‘white’ — in preorder when given an input linear quadtree representing only ‘black’ leaf nodes. The boundary matching algorithm is computationally fast and has low static and dynamic storage costs, making it useful for applications where linear quadtrees are held in main memory.  相似文献

With the development of ‘expert’ or ‘knowledgeåsed’ systems, the efforts of artificial intelligence research have attained commercial application. While there have been to date, only a few investigations concerning the extent of this transfer, assessment of the extent of manufacturing applications has been mostly the result of speculation. By means of a comprehensive survey of documented systems in the USA, UK and FRG, the state-of-the-art of production applications of knowledge-based systems is described. Detailed discussion i is made of reasons leading to computer assistance and integrated solutions. Computer-assisted technological s systems are reviewed under their specific task areas — that is, construction and design, production planning, production control, production of parts, quality assurance, assembly, maintenance and customer service. Abstract— A reflective‐type polarizer‐free flexible display using a dye‐doped liquid‐crystal (LC) gels is demonstrated. Compared to the conventional guest‐host LC mode, it has high contrast ratio and brightness due to the combining of both scattering and absorption. Such a gel‐like flexible display is bendable and trimable. In this paper, a three‐step switch using distinct dye‐doped LC gels is also demonstrated. For proper viewing, high-definition television (HDTV) images should be bright as well as large. Light-valve projection, whose feasibility is proven by several existing commercial devices (e.g. the Gretag Eidophor, the GE Talaria, the Sodern Titus, the Hughes LCLV and several Japanese liquid-crystal light-valve (LCLV) projectors), offers high resolution with large image areas and high brightness, and it thus appears to be most suitable for HDTV displays. The increasing availability of active-matrix-addressed liquid-crystal light-valve projectors for standard television, and the continuing dominance of ‘classical’ electron-beam-addressed light-valve projectors for the most demanding professional applications, are the starting points of a survey on the state of the art. After the two groups of light-valve projectors have been briefly reviewed, the major light-valve technologies are explained in some detail. Transmissive and reflective liquid-crystal light valves with various types of addressing are described first; the trend toward active-matrix addressing and high resolution is demonstrated. Commercial light-valve projectors with electrooptic and oil-film control layers are briefly introduced, and more recently developed technologies, such as metallized viscoelastic layers, deformable micromechanical mirrors, and polymer-encapsulated liquid crystals, are discussed. The author's research on deformable viscoelastic light-valve control layers for use in schlieren optical systems and on active matrices for addressing these is reported in some detail. The deformation behaviour of thin metallized elastomer layers has been analysed by the combination of the theories of electrostatics, linear viscoelasticity and thin plates; the calculated time behaviour and spatial-frequency response are found to be, at least in principle, sufficient for HDTV projection displays. Viscoelastic and metal layers have been manufactured by spin coating and vacuum evaporation, respectively; the deformation has been determined experimentally, mainly by phase-shift interferometry, and it is found to be in reasonable agreement with theoretical predictions. Sample active matrices with picture-element densities suitable for HDTV have been designed and fabricated. In addition, the concept of a full-colour schlieren optical projection system for the above reflective VSLMs is briefly described. Finally, in view of its importance for the field, some general aspects of active-matrix addressing are briefly examined.  相似文献

This paper presents the investigation of a head-mounted display as an innovative interface on the shop floor. The display used is voice controlled and designed to support operators of next-generation manufacturing systems in critical supervisory tasks. The connection of the display to a modern numerical control is explained from a technical point of view. A usability study is presented, which investigates the user's perspective according to 13 skilled operators. This study focuses on the highly critical task of ‘approach’. The results indicate that the head-mounted display enables the operator to fulfil the control task without the necessity of conventional eye and head movements, which induce visual and motor strain. The majority of the participants are in favour of an innovative display technology as a component of future human-machine interfaces.  相似文献

Buried stormwater pipe networks play a key role in surface drainage systems for urban areas of Australia. The pipe networks are designed to convey water from rainfall and surface runoff only and do not transport sewage. The deterioration of stormwater pipes is commonly graded into structural and serviceability condition using CCTV inspection data in order to recognize two different deterioration processes and consequences. This study investigated the application of neural networks modelling (NNM) in predicting serviceability deterioration that is associated with reductions of pipe diameter until a complete blockage. The outcomes of the NNM are predictive serviceability condition for individual pipes, which is essential for planning proactive maintenance programs, and ranking of pipe factors that potentially contribute to the serviceability deterioration. In this study the Bayesian weight estimation using Markov Chain Monte Carlo simulation was used for calibrating the NNM on a case study in order to account for the uncertainty often encountered in NNM's calibration using conventional back-propagation weight estimation. The performance and the ranked factors obtained from the NNM were also compared against a classical model using multiple discrimination analysis (MDA). The results showed that the predictive performance of the NNM using Bayesian weight estimation is better than that of the NNM using conventional backpropagation and MDA model. Furthermore, among nine input factors, ‘pipe age’ and ‘location’ appeared insignificant whilst ‘pipe size’, ‘slope’, ‘the number of trees’ and ‘climatic condition’ were found consistently important over both models for serviceability deterioration process. The remaining three factors namely, ‘structure’, ‘soil’ and ‘buried depth’ might be redundant factors. A better and more consistent data collection regime may help to improve the predictive performance of the NNM and identify the significant factors.  相似文献

Circularly orthogonal moments, such as Zernike moments (ZMs) and pseudo-Zernike moments (PZMs), have attracted attention due to their invariance properties. However, we find that for digital images, the invariance properties of some ZMs/PZMs are not perfectly valid. This is significant for applications of ZMs/PZMs. By distinguishing between the ‘good’ and ‘bad’ ZMs/PZMs in terms of their invariance properties, we design image watermarks with ‘good’ ZMs/PZMs to achieve watermark's robustness to geometric distortions, which has been considered a crucial and difficult issue in the research of digital watermarking. Simulation results show that the embedded information can be decoded at low error rates, robust against image rotation, scaling, flipping, as well as a variety of other common manipulations such as lossy compression, additive noise and lowpass filtering.  相似文献

In order to perform business modelling as apart of information systems development, there is a need for frameworks and methods. The paper proposes a framework for business interaction based on a language/action perspective. The framework is an architecture of five generic layers. The first layer concept is ‘business act’, which functions as the basic unit of analysis. The following four layer concepts are ‘action pair’, ‘exchange’, ‘business transaction’, and ‘transaction group’. The framework is inspired by a similar framework constructed by Weigand et al. The paper makes a critical examination of this framework as a basis for the proposed framework.  相似文献

An ecotone is a zone of vegetation transition between two communities, often resulting from a natural or anthropogenic environmental gradient. In remotely sensed imagery, an ecotone may appear as an edge, a boundary of mixed pixels or a zone of continuous variation, depending on the spatial scale of the vegetation communities and their transition zone in relation to the spatial resolution of the imagery. Often in image classification, an ecotone is either ignored if it falls within a width of one or two pixels, or part of it may be mapped as a separate vegetation community if it covers an area of several pixel widths. A soft classification method, such as probability mapping, is inherently appealing for mapping vegetation transition. Ideally, the probability of membership each pixel has to each vegetation class corresponds with the proportional composition of vegetation classes per pixel. In this paper we investigate the use of class probability mapping to produce a softened classification of an alpine treeline ecotone in Austria using a SPOT 5 HRG image. Here the transition with altitude is from dense subalpine forest to treeless alpine meadow and herbaceous vegetation. The posterior probabilities from a Maximum Likelihood algorithm are shown to reflect the land-cover composition of mixed pixels in the ecotone. The relationships between the posterior probability of class membership for the two end-member classes of ‘scrub and forest’ and ‘non-forest vegetation’ and the percentage ground cover of these vegetation classes (enumerated in 15 quadrats from 1:1500 aerial photographs) were highly significant: r2 = 0.83 and r2 = 0.85 respectively (p < 0.001, n = 15). We identify thresholds (alpha-cuts) in the posterior probabilities of class membership of ‘scrub and forest’ and ‘non-forest vegetation’ to map the alpine treeline ecotone as a transition zone of five intermediate vegetation classes between the end-member communities. In addition, we investigate the representation of the ecotone as a ratio between the posterior probabilities of ‘scrub and forest’ and ‘non-forest vegetation’. This displays the vegetation transition without imposing subjective boundaries, and has greater emphasis on the ecotone transition rather than on the end-member communities. We comment on the fitness for purpose of the different ways investigated for representing the alpine treeline ecotone.  相似文献

When we use the term ‘human–computer interaction’ (HCI), the image that is conjured up is of a person sitting at a visual display unit staring in at the world of ‘information’; the person is very much outside the space of information. But when we think of other activities such as going shopping, having a meeting or driving across town, we do not think of the person as outside this space. On the contrary, we see the person as inside a space of activities, surrounded by, and interacting with, assorted artefacts and people. Navigation of Information Space is an alternative conceptualisation of HCI that sees people as existing inside information spaces. Looking at HCI in this way means looking at HCI design as the creation of information spaces. This paper explores these ideas in more detail, arguing that Navigation of Information Space is not just a metaphor for HCI; it is a ‘paradigm shift’. The paper illustrates how Semiotics has informed this conception and discusses why such a paradigm shift is needed.  相似文献
