(137)Cs activity concentrations were studied in the sediment profiles collected at five locations in the Middle and South Adriatic. In the sediment profiles collected from the South Adriatic Pit, the deepest part of the Adriatic Sea, two (137)Cs peaks were identified. The peak in the deeper layer was attributed to the period of intensive atmospheric nuclear weapon tests (early 1960s), and the other to the Chernobyl nuclear accident (1986). Those peaks could be used to estimate sedimentation rates by relating them to the respective time periods. Grain-size analysis showed no changes in vertical distribution through the depth of the sediment profile, and these results indicate uniform sedimentation, as is expected in deeper marine environments. It was not possible to identify respective peaks on more shallow locations due to disturbance of the seabed either by trawlers (locations Palagru?a and Jabuka) or by river sediment (location Albania). The highest sedimentation rates were found in Albania (~4 mm y(-1)) and Jabuka (3.1 mm y(-1)). For Palagru?a, the sedimentation rate was estimated to be 1.8 mm y(-1), similar to the South Adriatic Pit where the sedimentation rate was estimated to be 1.8±0.5 mm y(-1). Low sedimentation rates found for the Middle and South Adriatic Sea are consistent with previously reported results for the rest of the Mediterranean.  相似文献

Since the double disaster of the 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami that affected hundreds of thousands of people and seriously damaged the Fukushima Daichi power plant in Japan on 11 March 2011, traces of radioactive emissions from Fukushima have spread across the entire northern hemisphere. The radioactive isotope of iodine (131)I that was generated by the nuclear accident in Fukushima arrived in Greece on 24 March 2011. Radioactive iodine is present in the air either as gas or bound to particles (aerosols). The maximum (131)I concentrations were measured between 3 and 5 April 2011. In aerosols the maximum (131)I values measured in Southern Greece (Athens) and Northern Greece (Thessaloniki) were 585±70 and 408±61 μΒq m(-3), respectively. (131)I concentrations in gas were about 3.5 times higher than in aerosols. Since 29 April 2011, the (131)I concentration has been below detection limits. Traces of (137)Cs and (134)Cs were also measured in the air filters with an activity ratio of (137)Cs/(134)Cs equal to 1 and (131)I/(137)Cs activity ratio of about 3. Since 16 May 2011, the (137)Cs concentration in air has been determined to be about the same as before the Fukushima accident. Traces of (131)I were also measured in grass and milk. The maximum measured activity of (131)I in sheep milk was about 2 Bq l(-1) which is 5000 times less than that measured in Greece immediately after the Chernobyl accident. The measured activity concentrations of artificial radionuclides in Greece due to the Fukushima release, have been very low, with no impact on human health.  相似文献

Determining the distribution of natural and artificial radionuclides in soil profiles as well as the surface layer of the soil is necessary due to the fact that radionuclides can enter the food chain from deeper soil layers and also contaminate ground water. In the current study, the activity-depth profiles of (137)Cs were determined in soil samples from 20 sites in and around the city of Istanbul. Naturally occurring radionuclides were determined at 12 of the locations. Uncultivated soil samples were taken in six horizontal layers at each location. Activity concentrations were measured with a gamma spectrometer. The impacts of texture, organic matter and pH of the soil on the vertical distribution of the radionuclides were also studied. The average and standard deviations of (137)Cs and (40)K activity concentrations in soil at a depth of 5 cm were found to be 16.46±14.71 and 450.2±239.1 Bq kg(-1), respectively. The activity concentrations of (40)K, (232)Th and (226)Ra were distributed uniformly with regard to soil depth. The depth distribution of (137)Cs generally fitted a linear function. The study revealed that >20 y after the Chernobyl disaster of 1986, 55 % of (137)Cs still remains in the upper 10 cm of soil in the Istanbul environment.  相似文献

This study presents the evaluation of absorbed dose in air due to gamma-emitting nuclides from (238)U and (232)Th series, (40)K and (137)Cs and the corresponding geographical information system (GIS) predictive mapping for the Northern State. Activity concentration of (238)U, (232)Th , (40)K and (137)Cs in soil samples collected from different locations have been measured using high-resolution gamma spectrometry. On average, activity concentrations were 19±4 ((238)U), 47±11 ((232)Th), 317±65 ((40)K) and 2.26 Bq kg(-1) for (137)Cs. Absorbed dose rate in air at a height of 1 m above ground surface was calculated using seven sets of dose rate conversion factors (DRCFs) and the corresponding annual effective dose was estimated. On average, the values obtained fall within a narrow range of 44 and 53 nGy h(-1), indicating that the variation in absorbed dose rate is insignificant for different DRCFs. The corresponding annual effective dose ranged from 53 to 65 μSv y(-1). Using GIS, prediction maps for concentrations of (238)U, (232)Th, (40)K and (137)Cs were produced. Also, a map for absorbed dose rate in air at a height of 1 m above the ground level was produced, which showed a trend of increasing from the west towards south-east of the State.  相似文献

Punjab is one of the most populated provinces of Pakistan having 34 districts. There is always a need to have baseline background level information about 137Cs and the corresponding gamma-ray doses to the population. In this respect, soil samples were collected to a depth of 30-50 cm from all 34 district headquarters of the Punjab province of Pakistan and 137Cs activity concentrations were measured. 137Cs activity concentration was found to be in the range from 1.1 +/- 1.0 to 5.3 +/- 2.5 Bq kg(-1). The average value of estimated external gamma-ray dose rate from all 34 districts of Punjab province was computed to be 0.18 +/- 0.07 nSv h(-1) from 137Cs in soil samples. The measured 137Cs activity concentration range was compared with the reported ranges in the literature from some of the other locations in the world. Results obtained in this study show that 137Cs concentration is of a lower level in the investigated area. The average value of estimated external effective dose rate is found far below the dose rate limit of 1.0 mSv y(-1) for members of the general public recommended by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) as well as the external gamma radiation dose of 0.48 mSv y(-1) received per head from the natural sources of radiation assessed by UNSCEAR (2000). It is concluded that 137Cs soil contamination does not pose radiation hazards to the population in the investigated areas.  相似文献

In order to investigate the radiological hazard of naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) and man-made (137)Cs radionuclide in the Bay of Cádiz, 149 samples of sediments have been analysed. Activity concentration in all the samples was determined using a HPGe detection system. Activity concentrations values of (226)Ra, (232)Th, (40)K and (137)Cs in the samples were 12.6±2.6 (2.5-40.6), 18.5±4.0 (2.8-73.4), 451±45 (105-1342) and 3.2±1.3 (0.2-16.0) Bq kg(-1), respectively. Outdoor external dose rate due to natural and man-made radionuclides was calculated to be 35.79±1.69 (4.71-119.16) nGy h(-1) and annual effective dose was estimated to be 43.89±2.27 (5.78-146.14) μSv y(-1). Results showed low levels of radioactivity due to NORM and man-made (137)Cs radionuclide in marine sediments recovered from the Bay of Cádiz (Spain), discarding any significant radiological risks related to human activities of the area. Furthermore, the obtained data set could be used as background levels for future research.  相似文献

In this study, the activity concentrations of some radionuclides in tap water samples of the Eastern Black Sea region of Turkey were measured. The activity concentrations of radionuclides (214)Pb, (214)Bi, (40)K, (226)Ra and (137)Cs were determined using high resolution gamma ray spectrometry. Furthermore, (222)Rn activity concentrations in tap water samples were measured using Liquid Scintillation Counting. The mean specific activities of (214)Pb, (214)Bi, (226)Ra, (40)K, (137)Cs and (222)Rn in tap water samples were 6.73, 6, 19.16, 168.57, 5.45 mBq l(-1) and 10.82 Bq l(-1), respectively. These values are comparable with concentrations reported for other countries. The effective doses were determined due to intake of these radionuclides as a consequence of direct consumption of tap water samples. The estimated effective doses were 6.878 x 10(-4) microSv y(-1) for (214)Pb, 4.800 x 10(-4) microSv y(-1) for (214)Bi, 3.916 microSv y(-1) for (226)Ra, 0.763 microSv y(-1) for (40)K, 0.052 microSv y(-1) for (137)Cs and 5.848 microSv y(-1) for (222)Rn.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to estimate the current concentrations of 90Sr and 137Cs in the urine of Finnish people and to estimate the doses. Two to three daily urine samples were collected from 18 adult Finnish volunteers in connection with studies of 137Cs body burdens in 1999-2001. The 90Sr activities in urine varied between 1.4 and 11 mBq l(-1). The 137Cs activity in urine varied between 0.36 and 56 Bq l(-1). The daily urinary excretion was found to be 4.8-17 mBq for 90Sr and 0.81-68 Bq for 137Cs. Assuming that the daily 90Sr intake was constant and that 18% of the ingested activity was excreted in urine, the mean intake in the investigated group would vary between 27 and 96 mBq d(-1). Based on these estimated intake values, the respective annual effective internal doses from 90Sr and 90Y varied from 0.3 to 1.0 microSv and from 137Cs from 4 to 350 microSv during the sampling period.  相似文献

To evaluate the environmental contamination and contributory external exposure after the accident at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP), the concentrations of artificial radionuclides in soil samples from each area were analysed by gamma spectrometry. Six artificial radionuclides ((131)I, (134)Cs, (137)Cs, (129m)Te, (95)Nb and (136)Cs) were detected in soil samples around FNPP. Calculated external effective doses from artificial radionuclide contamination in soil samples around FNPP were 1.9-2.9 μSv h(-1) (8.7-17.8 mSv y(-1)) in Fukushima city on 22 March 2011. After several months, these calculated external effective doses were 0.25-0.88 μSv h(-1) (2.2-7.6 mSv y(-1)) in Fukushima city on 29 June 2011. The present study revealed that the detected artificial radionuclides around FNPP mainly shifted to long-lived radionuclides such as radioactive caesium ((134)Cs and (137)Cs) even though current levels are decreasing gradually due to the decay of short-lived radionuclides such as (131)I, (129m)Te, (95)Nb and (136)Cs. Thus, radiation exposure potency still exists even though the national efforts are ongoing for reducing the annual exposure dose closer to 1 mSv, the public dose limit. Long-term environmental monitoring around FNPP contributes to radiation safety, with a reduction in unnecessary exposure to the residents.  相似文献

The profile of (137)Cs present in undisturbed soil due to the Chernobyl accident was measured repeatedly for approximately 20 y. The vertical migration of (137)Cs in soil is a very slow process. The mean vertical migration velocity is estimated at approximately 0.1-0.2 cm y(-1). A method based on in situ gamma spectrometry measurements and Monte Carlo computations, aimed at estimating the profile of (137)Cs without performing any soil sampling, is investigated.  相似文献

Three adult volunteers (2 males and 1 female) have ingested radioactive caesium in two edible forms in order to compare the gastrointestinal uptake and the subsequent short-term and long-term biokinetics. Foodstuffs made of fresh-water fish or mushrooms from regions in Sweden of high 137Cs deposition was ingested together with a 134CsCl-solution mixed with soft drinks. Whole-body countings of 134Cs and 137Cs were performed in the Malmo whole-body counter during a period of approximately 50 d prior to, and 200-300 d after the ingestion. Urine and faeces were collected the day before and up to 7-10 d after the test meals, and analysed for 134Cs and 137Cs. No significant difference in the gastrointestinal uptake fraction, f0=0.98, between caesium incorporated into a foodstuff matrix and caesium in ionic form was detected. Cumulated faecal excretion during 7 d after ingestion accounted for 2-3% of the intake. No significant difference in the long-term biological half-time was found between caesium present in a food matrix and in an aqueous solution in any of the volunteers.  相似文献

Inhalation of radon ((222)Rn) and daughter products are a major source of natural radiation exposure. Keeping this in view, seasonal indoor radon measurement studies have been carried out in 68 dwellings belonging to 17 residential areas in Alexandria city, Egypt. LR-115 Type 2 films were exposed for four seasons of 3 months each covering a period of 1 y for the measurement of indoor radon levels. Assuming an indoor occupancy factor of 0.8 and a factor of 0.4 for the equilibrium factor of radon indoors, it was found that the estimated annual average indoor radon concentration in the houses surveyed ranged from 45 ± 8 to 90 ± 13 Bq m(-3) with an overall average value of 65 ± 10 Bq m(-3). The observed annual average values are greater than the world average of 40 Bq m(-3). Seasonal variation of indoor radon shows that maximum radon concentrations were observed in the winter season, whereas minimum levels were observed in the summer season. The season/annual ratios for different type of dwellings varied from 1.54 to 2.50. The mean annual estimated effective dose received by the residents of the studied area was estimated to be 1.10 mSv. The annual estimated effective dose is less than the recommended action level (3-10 mSv y(-1)).  相似文献

In this study, natural gamma radioactivity levels were determined in the soil samples of the Samsun city centre by using the gamma ray spectrometry method. The analysis carried out with the high-purity germanium gamma spectrometry system has shown that average activity concentrations of (238)U, (232)Th, (40)K and (137)Cs were 19±2, 22±4, 521±23 and 15±1 Bq kg(-1), respectively. From the gamma analysis of soil samples, the average value of the absorbed gamma dose rates in air and the average value of the external annual effective dose rates were calculated as 45±4 nGy h(-1) and 55±5 μSv y(-1), respectively. The external hazard index has also been calculated and it has been found that the radiation hazard in Samsun is insignificant.  相似文献

Relations were obtained for calculating the concentrations of impurity isotopes of starting nuclides 98Tc, 127I, 133'134'137Cs in recycling 99Tc, 129I, 135Cs targets, respectively. Conditions of removing 98Tc from the transmutation cycle in a single irradiation run were found. The content of 127I in the targetattains an equilibrium value, thus making unnecessary isotopic separation of iodine. For isotopic separation of cesium, a decrease of the initial content of 137Cs in the 135Cs target to 1% is sufficient. The 133Cs and 134Cs nuclides preserve steady-state concentrations for a long period, and for this reason the activity grows insignificantly, depending on the 137Cs accumulation, which makes unnecessary isotopic separation of cesium from irradiated targets.  相似文献

Systematic data on radioactive atmospheric fallout in 1954-1999 and accumulated levels of contamination of the soil-vegetable cover with 90Sr and 137Cs around St. Petersburg, estimated on 1998, are presented. Comparative analysis is made of these data and directly obtained data on the vertical distribution of these radionuclides in the surface horizon (0-25 cm) of soddy-podzolic sandy loam soil: the levels of surface contamination with 90Sr and 137Cs were found to be 580±90 and 6500±600 Bq m-2 on 1998. Before April 28, 1986 the 90Sr and 137Cs radioactivity in the investigated region corresponded to the global level. After Chernobyl accident the contamination levels with 90Sr and 137Cs increased, respectively, from 1200 to 1280 (by 6.3%) and from 2400 to 7050 Bq m-2 (by a factor of 2.9). The 90Sr and 137Cs vertical distributions throughout the soil profile are considerably different: 137Cs is practically totally fixed in the surface horizon, its activity being exponentially declining; whereas the stock of 90Sr in horizons 0-10 and 0-25 cm represents only 22 and 59% of the integral accumulated inventory of 90Sr in the soil (990 Bq m- 2). The activity ratio of 137Cs to 90Sr in the atmospheric fallout in 1963-1985 was 1.85±0.42, and in river water in the same period, ca. 0.18, suggesting higher mobility in the soil of 90Sr as compared to 137Cs, and, therefore, higher rate of self-cleaning of the surface soil horizon with respect to 90Sr.  相似文献

Thyroid dose reconstruction is most accurate when using the results of direct thyroid measurements, in which gamma radiation emitted by radionuclides present in the thyroid and in the remainder of the body is recorded by means of a radiation detector positioned against the neck. A large number of such measurements were performed in Belarus in May-June 1986. Owing to the short half-life of 131I and to the intake and accumulation of caesium radioisotopes (mainly 134Cs and 137Cs) in the body, the thyroid doses derived from thyroid measurements made after the beginning of June 1986 have so far been often considered to be unreliable. To evaluate the influence of the caesium radioisotopes to the signal recorded by an instrument performing measurement of 131I activity in the thyroid, a Monte Carlo method was used to calculate the calibration factors of that instrument. These calculations were made for males of six reference ages: newborn, 1, 5, 10 and 15 years old, and adult. The calibration factors were combined with estimated time-dependent intake functions for 131I and caesium radioisotopes. The fractions of the instrument indications that were due to 131I in thyroid were thus estimated as a function of the age of the subject that was measured and of the time elapsed since the accident. Using this information when processing the thyroid measurements made in May 1986 would improve the accuracy of the thyroid dose estimates, and may make it possible to use a larger proportion of the thyroid measurements made in June 1986.  相似文献

One of the causative factors for cancer-inducing mechanisms in humans is radioactive elements present in tobacco leaves used in the manufacture of cigarettes. Smoking of tobacco and its products increases the internal intake and radiation dose due to naturally occurring radionuclides that are considered to be one of the most significant causes of lung cancer. In this work, different commercial types of cigarettes, cigar and moassel were collected from market. Naturally occurring radionuclides (226)Ra and (214)Bi ((238)U series), (228)Ac and (228)Ra ((232)Th series), (40)K and man-made (137)Cs were measured in tobacco using gamma-ray spectrometer. Results show that the average concentrations of (238)U, (232)Th and (40)K were 4.564, 3.940 and 1289.53 Bq kg(-1), respectively. This reflects their origin from the soil by root uptake and fertilisers used in the cultivation of tobacco plants. Concentration of (137)Cs was 0.348 Bq kg(-1) due to root uptake or deposition onto the leaf foliage. For smokers, the annual effective dose due to inhalation of (238)U varied from 49.35 to 139.40 μSv(-1) (average 104.27 μSv y(-1)), while of (232)Th from 23.86 to 111.06 μSv y(-1) (average 65.52 μSv y(-1)). The annual effective dose resulting from (137)Cs was varied from 10.96 to 24.01 nSv y(-1) (average 19.41 nSv y(-1)).  相似文献

Since the primary factor contributing to the internal effective dose in the human organism is contaminated food, the control of radionuclides in food represents the most important means of protection. This study was conducted to determine the levels of the dietary exposure of the Lebanese population to gamma-emitting radioisotopes. The activity concentrations of gamma-emitting radioisotopes have been measured in food samples that represent the market basket of an adult urban population in Lebanon. The artificial radionuclide (137)Cs was measured above detection limits in only fish, meat and milk-based deserts. The most abundant natural radionuclide was 40K (31-121 Bq kg(-1)), with the highest content in fish and meat samples. The annual mean effective dose contributed by 40K in the reference typical diet was estimated equal to 186 microSv y(-1), a value reasonably consistent with findings reported by several other countries.  相似文献

External irradiation from radionuclides naturally present in the environment or released from man-made practices or events is usually an important component of the exposure of human populations. These exposures derive primarily from gamma radiation arising from the decay of these radionuclides at locations outside the human body. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the radioactivity levels and health risks due to terrestrial radionuclides in the soil of Balikesir, one of the largest cities of the country, northwestern Turkey. For this purpose, activity concentrations of radionuclides in soil and outdoor gamma dose rates (terrestrial and cosmic) have been investigated in the city of Balikesir. In addition, maps for the radionuclide activity concentrations of soil and the outdoor gamma dose rate distributions have been plotted for the region. The average activities of radionuclides, (238)U, (232)Th, (40)K, (235)U and (137)Cs in the soil were determined to be 37.6 ± 10.8, 54.7 ± 15.1, 674.5 ± 203.2, 3.6 ± 1.6, 3.4 ± 2.2 Bq kg(-1), respectively, in the region. The average outdoor gamma dose rates due to terrestrial and cosmic radiations were found to be 78.5 ± 12.4 and 48.9 ± 5.8 nGy h(-1) with the total of 127.4 ± 18.9 nGy h(-1) in the region. Annual effective dose due to environmental outdoor gamma radiation exposures was determined to be 156.3 nSv. The mean estimated cancer risk values were found to be 0.063 × 10(-2) for the region using risk factors of ICRP 103. The results of the study were discussed with the studies done in other cities of Turkey and the worldwide averages.  相似文献

In the transport model for the prediction of the concentration of (137)Cs in milk, the transfer coefficient from feed to milk, F(m), is an important parameter. Site-specific transfer coefficient from feed to cow's milk, for (137)Cs in the Kaiga environment, a nuclear power station site in India, determined over a period of 10 y is presented in this paper. The value is determined from (137)Cs concentration in milk and grass samples of the Kaiga region and the result ranged from 6.43E-03 to 1.09E-02 d l(-1) with a geometric mean value of 8.0E-03 d l(-1). The result is compared with that for (40)K, determined concurrently at the same region and ranged from 3.06E-03 to 3.48E-03 d l(-1) with a geometric mean value of 3.26E-03 d l(-1). This parameter is quite useful in decision-making for implementing countermeasures during a large area contamination with (137)Cs in tropical areas like Kaiga.  相似文献
