Comparisons of Women and Men in the Engineerng Work Force

The results of the 1981 National Engineering Career Development Survey were used to examine differences in the employment characteristics, job values, job satisfaction, and professional activities of men and women engineers. Men and women engineers were generally similar in terms of the types of positions they held; however, significantly more men than women reported management as their principal function. Men and women reported comparable levels of technical responsibility increasing with experience. Supervisory responsibility also increased with experience, and was comparable for men and women with less than 10 years of experience. However, among men and women with more than 10 years of experience, larger percentages of men than women reported high levels of supervisory responsibility. Reports of median salaries demonstrated a similar pattern, with men reporting higher salaries than women after 8-10 years of experience. Men were somewhat more satisfied with their work, their career progress, and the intrinsic aspects of their jobs than were women. Men and women reported similar involvement in professional activities, although men were more likely to apply for patents and to purchase and read new books on engineering and science. Many of the observed differences between men and women were smaller or nonsignificant when the responses of engineers with five years of experience or less were examined, suggesting that opportunities for women in engineering may be improving.     

Summary of innovations in electrical engineering curricula

Two aspects of innovation in electrical engineering education are summarized: the membership and goals of the NSF Engineering Education Coalitions, and innovations implemented at individual schools. The latter summary results from responses to a survey of electrical engineering department heads. Responses from 35 schools were received; they are organized in this report under the categories of major program/curriculum revisions, curricular revisions, first-year experience, undergraduate engineering design experience, course innovations, and innovations in graduate education. Also reported are issues in electrical engineering education that merit attention, as reported by the department heads responding to the survey

A survey of industry practices regarding shielding of substationsagainst direct lightning strokes

Results of a survey of industry practices regarding shielding of substations against direct lightning strokes are presented and analyzed. The survey is based on responses from 114 companies, including consultants and utilities both from within and from outside North America. The survey identifies the shielding design methods in use, the factors affecting the selection of a shielding method, the shielding design criteria and the governing factors, the performance of the different shielding methods and miscellaneous related aspects. The survey revealed a large number (35) of shielding failure incidents; 34 occurred in systems designed using either the fixed-shielding angle method or Wagner's 1942 method

The survey is focused on short-term operation planning and papers are grouped according to the most important characteristics. This paper contributes to: (i) give an extensive survey in the area and (ii) mention aspects in the short-term operation planning that have been poorly developed and where future contributions are required.     

Distribution line protection practices-industry survey results

Results of an industry survey on current practices for the overcurrent protection of distribution lines are reported. This survey was condensed into a questionnaire with eight sections, covering general information about the following: system data; phase protection; ground protection; reclosing at the substation; system faults; cold load pickup; magnetic inrush; and system operations. The information has been compiled by the working group and is given along with appropriate comments and observations

Report of Large Motor Reliability Survey of Industrial and Commercial Installations, Part II

In 1983 the initial results of an IEEE survey on large motors was published and presented at the 1983 I&CPS Conference. This was the first presentation of the results of a survey completed in 1982 of motors larger than 200 hp and no older than 15 years. The results presented here of the 1982 survey are to investigate the data further to address questions generated by the results of the earlier paper, to find additional correlations of the reliability criteria of some of the more interesting categories, and to bring out more results and categories available from the survey data. For information on the overall survey response and the general results of the surveyed categories, refer to the previous paper.

Optimal capacitor placements in distribution systems. I. A newformulation and the overall problem

A novel formulation of the general capacitor placement problem taking into consideration practical aspects of capacitors, the load constraints, and the operational constraints at different load levels is presented. This formulation is a combinatorial optimization problem with a nondifferentiable objective function. A solution methodology based on an optimization technique (simulated annealing) is proposed to determine the locations where capacitors are to be installed, the types and sizes of capacitors to be installed, and the control settings of these capacitors at different load levels. The solution methodology can offer the global optimal solution for the general capacitor placement problem     

Towards a Definition of Source-Code Plagiarism

A survey using a scenario-based questionnaire format has provided insight into the perceptions of U.K academics who teach programming on computing courses. This survey across various higher education (HE) institutions investigates what academics feel constitutes source-code plagiarism in an undergraduate context. Academics' responses on issues surrounding source-code reuse and acknowledgement are discussed. A general consensus exists among academics that a ldquozero tolerancerdquo plagiarism policy is appropriate; however, some issues concerning source-code reuse and acknowledgement raised controversial responses. This paper discusses the most important findings from the survey and proposes a definition of what can constitute source-code plagiarism from the perspective of U.K. academics who teach programming on computing courses.     

Towards self-healing in distribution networks operation: Bipartite graph modelling for automated switching

The concept of self-healing has been recently introduced in power systems. The general self-healing framework is complex and includes several aspects of networks’ operation. This paper deals with automated switching in the context of autonomous operation of distribution networks. The paper presents a new network data model that allows effective reconfiguration algorithms to be designed. The model is based on bipartite graph representation of switching possibilities. The model properties and capabilities are illustrated for simple self-healing algorithms and a small real world medium voltage distribution network.
