The use of cool storage in conjunction with residential lithium bromide absorption chillers allows for improved operating conditions of the cooling subsystem. Significant performance degradation in the absorption cooling capacity is evident whenever the chiller cycles on and off during periods of low cooling demand. The capability of providing storage for the chiller out-put prevents short-term cycling of the absorption machine and significantly improves the seasonal average coefficient of performance of the cooling system. Cool storage can also be utilized to allow for a lower cooling capacity of the absorption unit (lower tonnage), without decreasing the ability of the subsystem to meet the cooling demands of the building. The size of cool storage can, in fact, be optimized by evaluating the ability of the cool storage component to minimize cycling of the absorption machine and in meeting the cooling demands on a smaller tonnage chiller.  相似文献

As the demand for refrigeration and air-conditioning has increased during the last decade, district cooling systems have been introduced in some major European cities. In a district cooling system, the combination of central cooling facilities and cool storage systems provides economic advantages over older conventional cooling plants. A cool storage system can meet the same total cooling load as a non-storage system over a given period of time with a smaller chiller. Cool storage systems using Phase Change Materials (PCMs) have a low temperature range and high energy density in the melting solidification of PCMs compared to sensible heat storage. Thus they are advantageous in reducing the storage volume, heat loss, and size of the chilling equipment. In this paper we describe some paraffin waxes and their binary mixtures. We discuss the thermal properties of laboratory-grade tetradecane, hexadecane and their binary mixtures, and we demonstrate their potential for use as PCMs for cool storage. The thermal properties include freezing point, the heat of fusion, thermal stability and volume expansion during the phase change process. In the study, a Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) was used to determine the heat of fusion of these materials and to generate thermal data for study and analysis. The results show that these materials are attractive candidates as potential PCMs for cool storage in district cooling systems. However, because of the high cost of laboratory-grade materials, technical-grade materials must be used for cool storage.  相似文献

This study investigates the energy performance of chiller and cooling tower systems integrated with variable condenser water flow and optimal speed control for tower fans and condenser water pumps. Thermodynamic-behaviour chiller and cooling tower models were developed to assess how different control methods of cooling towers and condenser water pumps influence the trade-off between the chiller power, pump power, fan power and water consumption under various operating conditions. Load-based speed control is introduced for the tower fans and condenser water pumps to achieve optimum system performance. With regard to an example chiller system serving an office building, the optimal control coupled with variable condenser water flow could reduce the annual system electricity use by 5.3% and operating cost by 4.9% relative to the equivalent system using constant speed fans and pumps with a fixed set point for cooling water temperature control.  相似文献

A novel solar-powered adsorption cooling system for low-temperature grain storage has been built, which consists of a solar-powered water heating system, a silica gel–water adsorption chiller, a cooling tower and a fan coil unit. The adsorption chiller is composed of two identical adsorption units, each of them containing an adsorber, a condenser, and an evaporator/receiver. The two water evaporators have been incorporated into one methanol evaporator by the use of the concept of a gravity heat pipe. In order to improve the system efficiency and achieve continuous cooling production, the adsorbers are operated out-of-phase, and heat and mass recovery processes have been used. During the period from July to September of 2004, the system was put into experimental operation to cool the headspace (i.e., the air volume above the grain) of a grain bin. Three months of operation showed promising performance. The chiller had a cooling power between 66 and 90 W per m2 of collector surface, with a daily solar cooling coefficient of performance (COPsolar) ranging from 0.096 to 0.13. The electric cooling COP was between 2.6 and 3.4.  相似文献

In this paper, performance of three types of district heating/cooling and hot water supply system with natural and unused energy utilization were examined by using system simulation. An area zoned for both commercial and residential buildings was chosen for this study. The first system is the conventional system in which an electric driven turbo chiller and a gas-fired boiler are installed as the heat source. This is considered as the reference system. Two alternative systems utilize waste heat from space cooling and heating. One is designed based on short-term heat recovery and the other employs the concept of an annual cycle energy system (i.e. seasonal heat recovery). All of the three systems use solar thermal energy for hot water supply to the residential zone. The index for evaluation is the coefficient of performance of the overall system, based on primary energy. As a result, it was found that the seasonal storage system could decrease the energy consumption by about 26% and the short-term heat recovery system could decrease it by about 16% compared with the reference system. In designing the heat recovery system, a balance of cooling/heating demand is an important factor. Therefore a sensitivity analysis of performance of the overall system and the seasonal thermal storage for several load patterns was performed. From these results, it was found that if the amount of heating/cooling demand were well balanced, an improvement of energy performance could be achieved and the utilization factor of the seasonal tank would become higher. Furthermore, the volume of the seasonal storage tank could be reduced.  相似文献

The paper proposes a diesel engine-based trigeneration system using a thermal storage for applications with simultaneous heating, cooling and power demand and where grid electricity is not available. A thermodynamic analysis is presented for the proposed trigeneration systems considering an 815?kWe diesel generator (DG) as a prime mover. Two configurations are considered. One configuration includes absorption chiller with an auxiliary hot water heater, while the other has a compression chiller in addition to the absorption chiller and water heater. Methodology of integrating a compression chiller is also presented. An analysis of both these options on primary energy savings basis for the considered DG shows that integrating a thermal storage and compression chiller enhances trigeneration performance. Without the compression chiller, the trigeneration system efficiency improves from 46% to 52% while with compression chiller integration, the improvement is much more from 46% to 72% when the power load decreases from 100% to 25%.  相似文献

The paper reports on a feasibility study of a solar-powered heating/cooling system for a swimming pool/space combination in a tropical environment. The system employs an absorption chiller and a cooling tower to meet the locker-room load. The heating is accomplished by employing hot water generated by heat exchange with the solar collector working fluid. Two thermal storage tanks are employed for the collector and domestic use. The absorption chiller utilizes hot water to regenerate the LiBr solution. The proposed system will enable the swimming season to be extended from 16 weeks to 52 weeks. The economic analysis is performed based on the life-cycle-cost method. The effects of discount rate, fuel prices, and the fuel inflation rate are discussed. The analysis shows, with the present level of fuel prices, that the solarassisted system is not economical enough over a life cycle of 10 years. The study presents different scenarios for which the solar-assisted system is, however, economical.  相似文献

Solar thermal driven cooling systems for residential applications are a promising alternative to electric compression chillers, although its market introduction still represents a challenge, mainly due to the higher investment costs. The most common system configuration is an absorption chiller driven by a solar thermal system, backed up by a secondary heating source, normally a gas boiler. Heat storage in the primary (solar) circuit is mandatory to stabilize and extend the operation of the chiller, whereas a cold storage tank is not so common. This paper deals with the selection of the most suitable configuration for residential cooling systems with solar energy. In Spain, where cooling needs are usually higher than heating needs, the interest of a reversible heat pump as auxiliary system and a secondary cooling storage are analyzed.A complete TRNSYS model has been developed to compare a configuration with just hot storage (of typical capacity 40 L/m2 of solar collector surface) and a configuration with both, hot and cool storages. The most suitable configuration is very sensible to the solar collector area. As the collector area increases, the advantages of a cool storage vanish. Increasing the collector area tends to increase the temperature of the hot storage, leading to higher thermal losses in both the collector and the tank. When the storage volume is concentrated in one tank, these effects are mitigated. The effect of other variables on the optimal configuration are also analyzed: collector efficiency curve, COP of the absorption chiller, storage size, and temperature set-points of the chillers.  相似文献

This paper reports on a feasibility study of a solar-powered heating/cooling system for a swimming pool/space combination in a tropical environment. The system utilizes an absorption chiller and a cooling tower to meet the facilities and locker room load. The heating is accomplished by employing hot water generated by heat exchange with the solar collector working fluid. Two thermal storage tanks were employed for the collector and domestic use. The absorption chiller utilizes hot water to regenerate the LiBr solution. The proposed system enables the swimming season to be extended from sixteen weeks to fifty-two weeks. Simulation results indicate that a combination of a double glazed collector area of 600–4800 m2 and a storage tank volume of 11·36 m3 results in a 25–37% reduction in the consumption of natural gas. Economic analysis is performed based on the life-cycle-cost method and takes into account the effects of discount rate, fuel price and fuel inflation rate. Different scenarios for which the solar-assisted system is economical are presented and analysed. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper aims to explore an efficient, cost-effective, and water-saving seasonal cold energy storage technique based on borehole heat exchangers to cool the condenser water in a 10 MW solar thermal power plant. The proposed seasonal cooling mechanism is designed for the areas under typical weather conditions to utilize the low ambient temperature during the winter season and to store cold energy. The main objective of this paper is to utilize the storage unit in the peak summer months to cool the condenser water and to replace the dry cooling system. Using the simulation platform transient system simulation program (TRNSYS), the borehole thermal energy storage (BTES) system model has been developed and the dynamic capacity of the system in the charging and discharging mode of cold energy for one-year operation is studied. The typical meteorological year (TMY) data of Dunhuang, Gansu province, in north-western China, is utilized to determine the lowest ambient temperature and operation time of the system to store cold energy. The proposed seasonal cooling system is capable of enhancing the efficiency of a solar thermal power plant up to 1.54% and 2.74% in comparison with the water-cooled condenser system and air-cooled condenser system respectively. The techno-economic assessment of the proposed technique also supports its integration with the condenser unit in the solar thermal power plant. This technique has also a great potential to save the water in desert areas.  相似文献

Enhancing the cooling process of water in a cool-thermal storage system is investigated in this paper. The system is utilized to cool air during on-peak power consumption hours to save energy. The system consists of parallel plates filled with water and triangular corrugated fins. A finite element model for the system is used to predict the cooling time of water for different water's initial temperatures, and also to study the effect of fins design on the cooling process. The result indicates that the aspect ratio of the triangular fin has a significant effect the cooling process of water, and cooling rate increases for the aspect ratio greater or less than 0.75. Temperature contours, average water temperature, and Nusselt number are presented for the cooling process.  相似文献

Absorption chillers can help to increase the performance of biogas-driven micro gas turbine (MGT) cogeneration plants. In this paper we analyse various integrated configurations of several types of commercially available absorption cooling chillers and MGT cogeneration systems driven by biogas. MGTs are fuelled with biogas and their waste heat is used to drive absorption chillers and other thermal energy users. The chillers considered in this study include single- and double-effect water/LiBr and ammonia/water chillers. The exhaust gas from the MGT can be used directly to drive the chiller or indirectly to produce hot water to drive the chiller. In this paper we conduct a case study for an existing sewage treatment plant. Chilled water is used to reduce humidity in the biogas pre-treatment process and cool the combustion air of the MGT. We identify the most interesting integrated configurations for trigeneration systems that use biogas and micro gas turbines. We analyse these configurations and compare them with conventional configurations using operational data from an existing sewage treatment plant. The best configurations are those that completely replace the existing system with a trigeneration plant that uses all the available biogas and additional natural gas to completely meet the heating demands of the sewage treatment plant.  相似文献

Thermal storage, low power tariff at night, and low nocturnal temperature can be used in synergy to reduce the cooling costs of the solar-powered absorption chiller cooling systems. This study aims to reduce the required cooling capacity of an absorption chiller (ACH) powered by a solar parabolic trough collector (PTC) and a backup fuel boiler by integrating thermal storage tanks. The thermal performance of the system is simulated for a building that is cooled for 14 h/day. The system uses 1000 m2 PTC with 1020 kW ACH. Chilled water storage (CHWS) and cooling water storage (CWS) effects on the system performance for different operation hours per day of the ACH under Izmir (Turkey) and Phoenix (USA) weather conditions are analyzed. When the ACH operates 14 h/day as the load for both systems and both locations, the variations of the solar collector efficiency and the cooling load to heat input ratio remain less than 4% after the modifications. From the addition of CHWS to the reference system, a parametric study consisting of changing the ACH operation hours per day shows that the required cooling capacity of the ACH can be reduced to 34%. The capacity factor of the ACH is improved from its reference value of 41% up to 96%.  相似文献

Solar domestic hot water heating systems perform more efficiently if their storage tanks are perfectly thermally stratified. In real tanks, which do not perfectly stratify, the most important mechanism destroying stratification is plume entrainment. Plume entrainment occurs when cooler water is inserted into the tank top which contains hotter water. The resultant falling plume of cool water causes mixing. This paper uses computer simulation to evaluate and compare two strategies by which plume entrainment is minimized by controlling the collector flow rate. One strategy (calleá “SCOT”) maintains a constant collector outlet temperature, and the other (called “FCTR”) strategy maintains a constant temperature rise ΔTset from inlet to outlet of the collector. The results of the study show that the SCOT strategy always produces a system that performs more poorly than the corresponding system with a fixed flow rate. The FCTR strategy, on the other hand, consistently out-performs the fixed flow strategy, but only by a few percent. When the FCTR strategy is used, the optimum ΔTset to use is 20°C for the SDHW system simulated.  相似文献

The potential of using thermal energy storage (TES) in the form of ice or chilled water to cool gas turbine inlet air is evaluated for a remote oil field location in the Sultanate of Oman using local hourly typical meteorological year weather data. It is found that under the conditions investigated seasonal TES in chilled water storage tanks or ice bins for the location considered is prohibitively expensive and thus not recommended. Application of partial TES option shows that the cool storage does not result in any noticeable reduction in the chiller size. Hence, TES whether seasonal, partial, or full storage is not a viable option for the considered location, especially in the absence of time‐of‐use utility rate structure. A silica gel–water adsorption chiller integrated with a closed wet cooling tower is proposed. This adsorption chiller consists of two vacuum chambers, each with one adsorber, one condenser and one evaporator. Vacuum valves were not adopted in this chiller in order to enhance the reliability. A novel heat recovery process was carried out after a mass recovery-like process to improve the coefficient of performance (COP). Integration of the closed wet cooling tower into the chiller could ensure the cleanliness of cooling water circulating in the chiller and also promote the convenient setup of the chiller. A transient one-dimensional mathematical model was adopted to study this adsorption chiller. The simulated results showed that the cooling power and COP were 10.76 kW and 0.51 respectively when the hot water inlet temperature, the chilled water inlet temperature, the air inlet wet bulb temperature and dry bulb temperature were 85, 15, 28 and 30 °C respectively.  相似文献

In hot humid countries such as Thailand, air conditioning plant is installed in most commercial and industrial buildings. A conventional air conditioning system, which is normally operated when cooling is required, is the most favored option. Ice thermal storage on a large scale, used to provide a cool reservoir for use in peak periods, is however an attractive financial option for large buildings to supply coolness. There are two means of operating ice thermal storage systems, namely full storage and partial storage. In this paper, a computer model has been developed in order to compare energy use in conventional air cooling systems and ice thermal storage systems. Under Thailand electricity tariff rates, the results from the simulations show that the full ice thermal storage can save up to 55% of the electricity cost required for cooling per month when compared with the conventional system. It is also found that using full storage option can reduce the total energy consumption by 5% for the selected building.  相似文献

By integrating the building structure as thermal energy storage into the building services concept, thermally activated building systems (TABS) have proven to be economically viable for the heating and cooling of buildings. Having already developed an integrated design method and various control concepts in the past, in the present paper the impact of different aspects of TABS regarding the energetic performance of such systems is analyzed. Based on a simulation case study for a typical Central European office building, the following conclusions can be drawn. The energy efficiency of TABS is significantly influenced by the hydronic circuit topology used. With separate zone return pipes energy savings of approximately 15–25 kW h/m2 a, or 20–30% of heating as well as cooling demand, can be achieved, compared to common zone return pipes, where energy losses occur due to mixing of return water. A strong impact on energy efficiency can also be observed for the control strategy. Thus, by intermittent operation of the system using pulse width modulation control (PWM), the electricity demand for the water circulation pumps can be reduced by more than 50% compared to continuous operation. Concerning cold generation for TABS, it is shown that free cooling with a wet cooling tower is most efficient, if the cold source is the outside air. Variants with mechanical chillers exhibit 30–50% higher electricity demands for cold generation and distribution, even though their runtimes are much shorter compared to the cooling tower runtimes. In conclusion, the results show that significant energy savings can be achieved using adapted system topologies and applying appropriate control solutions for TABS.  相似文献

An experimental investigation of the performance characteristics of a counter flow wet cooling tower represented by the heat rejected by the tower and its thermal effectiveness is presented in this paper. The tower is filled with a “VGA.” (Vertical Grid Apparatus) type packing which is 0.42 m high and contains four (04) galvanised sheets having a zigzag form, between which are disposed three (03) metallic vertical grids in parallel with a cross-sectional test area of 0.15 m × 0.148 m. The investigation is concerned mainly on the effect of the air, water flow rates and the inlet water temperatures on the thermal effectiveness of the cooling tower as well as the heat rejected by this tower from water to be cooled to the air stream discharged into the atmosphere. The two operating regimes which were observed during the air/water contact inside the tower, a Pellicular Regime (PR) and a Bubble and Dispersion Regime (BDR) appear to be important, as The BDR regime enables to cool larger amount of water flow rates, while the Pellicular regime results with higher thermal effectiveness.  相似文献

A novel indirect evaporative chiller driven by outdoor dry air to produce cold water as the cooling source for air conditioning systems is introduced, and the principle and the structure of the chiller is presented. The cold water can be produced almost reversibly under ideal working conditions, with its temperature infinitely close to the dew point temperature of the inlet air. The key components of the chiller are an air cooler and a padding tower. To improve the heat transfer performance inside the chiller, a quasi-countercurrent air cooler was designed; a subsection linear method was used for the mathematical model of the padding tower. The first indirect evaporative chiller, designed and developed in 2005, has been in use in Kairui Building, a big hotel in Shihezi, Xinjiang Autonomous Region. The tested temperature of the water produced is below the wet bulb temperature of outdoor air and reached the average value of the dew point temperature and the wet bulb temperature of outdoor air. As the running components are only pumps and fans, the COP (cooling energy for room divided by power cost) of this chiller is high, and the drier the outdoor air, the higher COP the chiller obtained. Since no CFCs are used in this chiller, it would not cause any pollution to the aerosphere. Finally, the application prospect of the indirect evaporative chiller in the world is presented.  相似文献
