Sodium‐montmorillonite nanoclay was modified with octadecylamine and compounded with natural rubber (NR) by dry mixing method. The effects of organoclay loading level on mechanical properties, thermal–mechanical behavior, and heat build‐up of NR/organoclay nanocomposites were investigated. Temperature scanning stress relaxation technique was used to characterize the thermal–mechanical behavior of the composites. The morphological properties were assessed by X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Loading levels of organoclay below 5 phr gave improved mechanical properties and heat build‐up, along with exfoliated clay structure in the nanocomposites. On the other hand, with loading levels above 7 phr the organoclay tended to agglomerate, and X‐ray diffraction revealed an intercalated structure. In these cases, the excess residual organoclay caused significantly increased stress relaxation and heat build‐up. Unmodified sodium‐montmorillonite as filler did not significantly affect the mechanical and heat build‐up properties of NR vulcanizates. POLYM. The natural rubber/styrene butadiene rubber/organoclay (NR/SBR/organoclay) nanocomposites were successfully prepared with different types of organoclay by direct compounding. The optimal type of organoclay was selected by the mechanical properties characterization of the NR/SBR/organoclay composites. The series of NR/SBR/organoclay (the optimal organoclay) nanocomposites were prepared with various organoclay contents loading from 1.0 to 7.0 parts per hundreds of rubber (phr). The nearly completely exfoliated organoclay nanocomposites with uniform dispersion were confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X‐ray diffraction (XRD). The results of mechanical properties measurement showed that the tensile strength, tensile modulus, and tear strength were improved significantly when the organoclay content was less than 5.0 phr. The tensile strength and the tear strength of the nanocomposite with only 3.0 phr organoclay were improved by 92.8% and 63.4%, respectively. It showed organoclay has excellent reinforcement effect with low content. The reduction of the score and cure times of the composites indicated that the organoclay acted as accelerator in the process of vulcanization. The incorporation of a small amount of organoclay greatly improved the swelling behavior and thermal stability, which was attributed to the good barrier properties of the dispersed organoclay layers. The outstanding performance of co‐reinforcement system with organoclay in the tire formulation showed that the organoclay had a good application prospect in the tire industry, especially for the improvement of abrasion resistance and the reduction of production cost. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Carbon black (B)–nanoclay (NC) hybrid composites, based on millable polyurethane and brominated isoprene isobutylene rubber (BIIR), were prepared. The carbon black loading was fixed at 20 phr and organically modified sodium montmorillonite clay loading varied from 5 to 20 phr in each rubber compounds. The nanocomposites were prepared in laboratory by mixing two‐roll mill. The state of dispersion of the layered silicate was studied by X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). XRD and TEM results indicated intercalation of PU and BIIR into the silicate interlayers, followed by exfoliation of the silicate layers into the elastomer matrices. However, the level of intercalation and exfoliation varied considerably with the type of elastomer. The reinforcing effects obtained were found to depend strongly on the extent and degree of the dispersion of the carbon black and silicate layers into the rubber matrices. Mechanical and dynamic mechanical properties were evaluated for each composite. POLYM. COMPOS., 2010. © 2009 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

Natural rubber (NR) vulcanizates exhibit good mechanical properties compared to vulcanizates of synthetic rubbers. Incorporation of a conventional filler at higher loadings to NR enhances its modulus, while reduction in tensile strength and elongation. This paper presents a new strategy for development of a NR‐clay nanocomposite with enhanced mechanical properties by incorporation of lower loadings (2–8 phr) of cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide modified montmorillonite clay (OMMT‐C) under acid‐free environment. The effect of OMMT‐C loading on cure characteristics, rubber‐filler interactions, crosslink density, dynamic mechanical thermal properties, and mechanical properties were evaluated. Incorporation of OMMT‐C accelerated the vulcanization process and enhanced mechanical properties. X‐ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy images revealed that the formation of intercalated clay structures at lower OMMT‐C loadings, and clay aggregates at higher loadings. A nanocomposite at OMMT‐C loading of 2 phr exhibited the best balanced mechanical properties, and was associated with highest crosslink density and rubber–filler interactions. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Skim natural rubber latex (SNRL) is a protein rich by‐product obtained during the centrifugal concentration of natural rubber (NR) latex. A new method to recover rubber hydrocarbon and to obtain nanocomposites with organoclay (OC) was investigated. The approach involved treatment of SNRL with alkali and surfactant, leading to creaming of skim latex and removal of clear aqueous phase before addition of OC dispersion. Clay mixed latex was then coagulated to a consolidated mass by formic acid, followed by drying and vulcanization like a conventional rubber vulcanizate. X‐ray diffraction (XRD) studies revealed that NR nanocomposites exhibited a highly intercalated structure up to a loading of 15 phr (parts per hundred rubber) of OC. Transmission electron microscopy studies showed a highly exfoliated and intercalated structure for the NR nanocomposites at loadings of 3–5 phr organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT). The presence of clay resulted in a faster onset of cure and higher rheometric torque. The rubber recovered from skim latex had a high gum strength, and a low amount of OC (5 phr) improved the modulus and tensile strength of NR. The high tensile strength was supported by the tensile fractography from scanning electron microscopy. Thermal ageing at 70°C for 6 days resulted in an improvement in the modulus of the samples; the effect was greater for unfilled NR vulcanizate. The maximum degradation temperature was found to be independent of the presence and concentration of OC. The increased restriction to swelling with the loading of OC suggested a higher level of crosslinking and reinforcement in its presence. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A major problem in most natural rubber latex (NRL) commonly encountered like other polymer is susceptibility to mechanical properties and thermal degradation; particularly in thin film due to the presence of double bonds in the main chain. Therefore, it is desirable to seek for ways of improving these properties. Silica aerogel is a material with extraordinary properties was believed to have potential enhance properties in NRL films because of its high specific surface area. Therefore, based on the unique character of silica aerogel, NRL‐silica aerogel film was developed by latex compounding and dry coagulant dipping to form thin film where silica aerogel acts as filler. Silica aerogel, synthesized from rice husk was dispersed in a ball‐mill using distilled water for NRL compounding. Results indicate that increasing silica aerogel loading enhances the mechanical properties of the NRL‐silica aerogel film. Effects of postvulcanization processes were also investigated, whereby the best reinforcing effect was obtained at 4 phr silica aerogel loading with leaching postvulcanization condition. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. BACKGROUND: Both exfoliated and toughened polypropylene‐blend‐montmorillonite (PP/MMT) nanocomposites were prepared by melt extrusion in a twin‐screw extruder. Special attention was paid to the enhancement of clay exfoliation and toughness properties of PP by the introduction of a rubber in the form of compatibilizer toughener: ethylene propylene diene‐based rubber grafted with maleic anhydride (EPDM‐g‐MA). RESULTS: The resultant nanocomposites were characterized using X‐ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis and Izod impact testing methods. It was found that the desired exfoliated nanocomposite structure could be achieved for all compatibilizer to organoclay ratios as well as clay loadings. Moreover, a mechanism involving a decreased size of rubber domains surrounded with nanolayers as well as exfoliation of the nanolayers in the PP matrix was found to be responsible for a dramatic increase in impact resistance of the nanocomposites. CONCLUSION: Improved thermal and dynamic mechanical properties of the resultant nanocomposites promise to open the way for highly toughened super PPs via nanocomposite assemblies even with very low degrees of loading. Styrene butadiene rubber-organoclay nanocomposites were prepared with Cloisite 15A via melt intercalation. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy indicated that the nanostructures are partially exfoliated and intercalated. The nanocomposites exhibited great improvements in tensile strength and tensile modulus. The incorporation of organoclay gave rise to considerable reduction of tan delta and increase in storage modulus in the rubbery region. It is shown that after 6 phr (parts per hundred rubber) clay loading there is not much increase in the properties. The effect of carbon black (N330) on mechanical properties, dynamic mechanical properties, heat build up, abrasion resistance in the nanocomposites having the optimized clay level (6 phr) was investigated. Optimum results were obtained with the addition of 25 phr carbon black. For comparison with the 6phr nanoclay and 25phr N330 (high abrasion furnace carbon black) filled SBR composites, 40 phr N330 filled SBR composites was used. The 6phr organoclay and 25phr N330 filled SBR nanocomposite showed better properties than 40phr carbon filled SBR compound. These results indicate that 6phr organoclay can be replaced by 15 phr carbon black from the conventional SBR-carbon black based tire tread compounds. The Dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA) results revealed that the new tire tread compound gives better rolling resistance and comparable wet grip resistance and lower heat build up than that of conventional tread compound.  相似文献

Natural rubber (NR)‐montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites were prepared by a novel in situ organomodified and latex compounding method, followed by melt compounding technique. Effects of cationic surfactant on MMT dispersion, curing characteristic, mechanical, and dynamical properties were investigated. The number of layers in the layered MMT stack was determined by Small‐Angle X‐Ray Scattering (SAXS). The dispersion of MMT tends to form high ordered structure in NR‐MMT masterbatch when cationic surfactant of more than 4 phr was used. The morphology of Na‐MMT shows partly intercalated and exfoliated structure in the matrix after mixing and hot pressing process with reduced number of layers compared to the pristine MMT. The use of cationic surfactant over 4 phr introduces a plasticizing effect resulting in the reduction of crosslink density, hardness and modulus, but increase in tensile strength due to higher interfacial adhesion between NR and MMT as determined by Maeir‐Goritz model and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM). The optimum cationic surfactant loading is observed at 4 phr with the highest stable bonds, which result in the highest crosslink density, tear strength and storage modulus while the lowest Payne effect and tan delta at 60°C. A novel organomodified montmorillonite prepared by solid‐state method and its nanocomposites with natural rubber were studied. The nanocomposites were prepared by traditional rubber mixing and vulcanizing process. The properties of solid‐state organomodified montmorillonite were investigated by Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy (FITR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The dispersion of the layered silicate in rubber matrix was characterized by X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that the nanocomposites consisting of solid‐state organomodified montmorillonite and natural rubber are obtained. The solid‐state organomodified montmorillonite can not only accelerate the curing process, but also improve the mechanical and aging resistance properties of NR. The properties improvement caused by the fillers are attributed to partial intercalation of the organophilic clay by NR macromolecules. In addition, the dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) results showed a decrease of tanδmax and increase of Tg when the organoclay is added to the rubber matrix, which is due to the confinement of the macromolecular segments into the organoclay nanolayers and the strong interaction between the filler and rubber matrix. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel rice bran carbon (RBC) filled styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) composites were fabricated by latex compounding method (LCM). The chemical structure determination and the static precipitation experiments definitely authenticated the hydrophilicity of RBC, which enables RBC to be uniformly dispersed in water without surface modification and thereby compounded with rubber latex directly. The SBR/RBC composites prepared by LCM exhibited homogeneous filler dispersion state and superior mechanical properties compared with those compounded by solid compounding method (SCM). The vulcanization properties, mechanical properties, thermal stabilities, and swelling properties of SBR/RBC composites prepared by LCM were studied. It was revealed that the tensile strength, modulus, and tear strength of SBR/RBC composites increased correspondingly as the RBC loading increased from 0 to 80 phr. The decomposition temperature would stop rising when the filler loading exceeded 40 phr. The significant increases of the crosslink density with increasing filler volume content indicated the reinforcement effect of RBC. POLYM. Onium ion‐modified montmorillonite (organoclay) was melt compounded with natural rubber (NR) in an internal mixer and cured by using a conventional sulfuric system. Epoxidized natural rubber with 50 mol % epoxidation (ENR 50) was used in 10 parts per hundred rubber (phr) as a compatibilizer. The effect of organoclay with different filler loading up to 10 phr was studied. Cure characteristics were determined by a Monsanto MDR2000 rheometer, whereas the tensile, compression, and tear properties of the nanocomposites were measured according to the related ASTM standards. While the torque maximum and torque minimum increased slightly, both scorch time and cure time reduced with the incorporation of organoclay. The tensile strength, elongation at break, and tear properties went through a maximum (at about 2 phr) as a function of the organoclay content. As expected, the hardness, moduli at 100% (M100) and 300% elongations (M300) increased continuously with increasing organoclay loading. The compression set decreased with incorporation of organoclay. The dispersion of the organoclay in the NR stocks was investigated by X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Rubber‐toughened polypropylene (PP) nanocomposites containing organophilic layered silicates were prepared by means of melt extrusion at 230 °C using a co‐rotating twin‐screw extruder in order to examine the influence of the organoclay and the addition of PP grafted with maleic anhydride (PPgMAH) as a compatibilizer on the morphological, mechanical and thermal properties. The mechanical properties of rubber‐toughened polypropylene nanocomposites (RTPPNCs) were studied through tensile, flexural and impact tests. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used for investigation of the phase morphology and rubber particles size. X‐ray diffraction (XRD) was employed to characterize the formation of nanocomposites. The thermal properties were investigated by using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The dynamic mechanical properties were examined by using dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). From the tensile and flexural tests, the optimum loading of organoclay in RTPP was found to be 6 wt%. The optimum loading of PPgMAH, based on the tensile and flexural properties, was also 6 wt%. The increase in the organoclay and PPgMAH content resulted in a severe embrittlement, manifested by a drop in the impact strength and tensile elongation at break. XRD studies revealed that intercalated RTPPNCs had been successfully prepared where the macromolecular PP segments were intercalated into the interlayer space of the organoclay. In addition, the organoclay was dispersed more evenly in the RTPPNC as the PPgMAH content increased. TGA results revealed that the thermal stability of the RTPPNC improved significantly with the addition of a small amount of organoclay. Copyright © 2006 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Unique nanocomposite (NC) gels were prepared by blending water swollen unmodified montmorillonite clay suspension with natural rubber (NR) and styrene‐butadiene rubber (SBR) latices followed by prevulcanization. These were extensively characterized by dynamic light scattering, solvent swelling, tensile, and dynamic mechanical measurements. Reinforcement behavior of NC gels was investigated by adding NC gels into virgin NR and SBR matrices at various loadings. The distribution and morphology of NC gels in the elastomer matrices was studied by X‐ray dot mapping and high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy. Experimental results indicated tremendous improvement of tensile strength (TS) and modulus of the NC gel‐filled matrices along with noticeable changes in dynamic mechanical and rheological properties. Compared with virgin NR, the TS of 16 phr NC gel‐filled NR system increased by 117%. Similar level of enhancement of TS was also registered for the NC gel‐filled SBR systems. NC gel‐filled systems showed higher shear viscosities and lower die‐swell values compared with their virgin counterparts. Contemporary particulate composite and nanofiller reinforcement models were used to understand the reinforcing behavior of these NC gels. POLYM. Poly[ethylene‐co‐(vinyl acetate)] (EVA)/(Standard Malaysian natural rubber) (SMR L)/organoclay nanocomposites were prepared by using melt intercalation and solution blending methods. In both preparation methods, the EVA: (SMR L) ratio was prefixed at 50:50, while the organoclay loading was varied from 0 to 10 phr. The effects of two different processing routes and organoclay loading on the morphology, tensile, properties thermal properties, and flammability of the nanocomposites were studied. X‐ray diffraction results and transmission electron microscopy images proved that solution blending promotes better dispersion of organoclay than melt intercalation. Thus, the nanocomposites prepared by the solution‐blending method exhibited higher values of tensile strength, stress at 100% elongation (M100), and thermal stability. The M100 value and thermal stability improved proportionally with the increase of organoclay content, owing to the demobilizing effect and the barrier properties of the organoclay. The optimum tensile strength value was achieved at a 2‐phr organoclay loading. Further increases in loading decreased the strength of the nanocomposites. Tensile fracture surfaces of the nanocomposites prepared by both methods showed different fracture behavior, as evidenced by scanning electron microscopy images. Flammability decreased when the organoclay loading increased for the nanocomposites prepared by both methods. J. VINYL ADDIT. TECHNOL., 2009. © 2009 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

Summary: Hydrogenated acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR) was melt compounded with montmorillonite (MMT) and organophilic modified MMTs prior to sulfur curing. In contrast to the micro‐composite formation resulting from the compounding of the HNBR and pristine MMT, the modified MMTs (i.e., octadecylamine: MMT‐ODA, octadecyltrimethylamine: MMT‐ODTMA, methyltallow‐bis(2‐hydroxyethyl) quaternary ammonium: MMT‐MTH intercalants) produced nanocomposites. It was found that the organoclay with primary amine intercalant (cf. MMT‐ODA) gave confined structures along with the exfoliated/intercalated structures. This was traced to its reactivity with the curatives. By contrast, the organoclays containing less reactive quaternary ammonium compounds (cf. MMT‐ODTMA, MMT‐MTH) were exfoliated and intercalated based on X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results. The hydroxyl functional groups of the MMT‐MTH supported the clay dispersion. The better adhesion between MMT‐MTH and HNBR was explained by hydrogen bonding between the hydroxyl groups of the intercalant and the acrylonitrile group of the HNBR matrix. This HNBR/MMT‐MTH nanocomposite showed the best mechanical properties as verified by tensile mechanical tests and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). The high tensile strength along with the high elongation at break for the rubber nanocomposites were attributed to the ability of the ‘clay network’ to dissipate the input energy upon uniaxial loading.

Composites based on styrene‐butadiene rubber containing organophilic montmorillonite were produced by melt compounding and conventional sulfur curing. The samples were characterized by X‐ray diffraction and both transmission and scanning electron microscopy. The dispersion of the clay and the spacing between the silicate layers revealed the presence of intercalated, aggregated, and partially exfoliated structures. Infrared spectroscopy also provided clear evidence for clay exfoliation and migration of zinc stearate to the surface of the samples. The crosslink density, evaluated through swelling in toluene, decreased with increasing organoclay content. This behavior could be justified by the partial absorption of the curatives on the filler surface. The mechanical properties of nanocomposites significantly increased when compared with those of unfilled rubber. These enhanced properties were attributed to the intercalation/exfoliation of the organoclay. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 2011. © 2011 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

The low‐temperature grade hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber (LTG‐HNBR) composites with organoclays were successfully prepared for the purpose of using the clay‐networks to improve bulk properties. In order to construct different clay‐networks, three montmorillonite (MMT) modified by surfactants were added and then their dispersions and affinities in the rubber were compared. Transmission electron microscope and small‐angle X‐ray scattering results showed that 10 phr organoclays form partially exfoliated and intercalated structures in the matrix despite of modifier types. FTIR and particle analysis data display that increasing the number of alkyl tails of modifier molecules decreases the affinities of clays and their extent of intercalation in rubber whereas the special modifier with coupling agent enhances their compatibility with the bulk. The mechanical, oil resistance, and thermal properties of the composites are greatly reinforced by clay‐networks which parallel their interactions. Importantly, the addition of clays barely changes glassy temperature (Tg) of rubber bulk, but it improves its low‐temperature elasticity. Therefore, it is stressed that organoclay hybrid networks are very useful to modify low‐temperature rubber. We believe that LTG‐HNBR composites with organoclays may serve some applications of oil‐sealing products. POLYM. COMPOS., 35:1306–1317, 2014. © 2013 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

Na‐montmorillonite/polyethyleneimine‐g‐poly(methyl methacrylate) (Na‐MMT/PEI‐g‐PMMA) nanocomposite latexes were prepared by soap‐free emulsion polymerization in the aqueous suspension of Na‐MMT. The exfoliated morphology of the nanocomposites was confirmed by XRD and TEM. With the aim of improving morphology and mechanical properties of natural rubber latex (NRL) films, the synthesized Na‐MMT/PEI‐g‐PMMA nanocomposites were mixed with NRL by latex compounding technology. The results of SEM and AFM analysis showed that the surface of NRL/Na‐MMT/PEI‐g‐PMMA film was smoother and denser than that of pristine NRL film while Na‐MMT was dispersed uniformly on the fracture surface of the modified films, which suggested the good compatibility between NRL and Na‐MMT/PEI‐g‐PMMA. The tensile strength of NRL/Na‐MMT/PEI‐g‐PMMA films was increased greatly by 85% with 10 phr Na‐MMT/PEI‐g‐PMMA when Na‐MMT content was 3 wt % and the elongation at break also increased from 930% to 1073% at the same time. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, sodium montmorillonite clay was added, as filler, to nanocomposites of natural rubber (NR) and cellulose II (regenerated cellulose) in amounts varying from 0 to 5 phr (per hundred resin). Natural rubber (NR)/cellulose II/montmorillonite nanocomposites were prepared by co‐coagulating NR latex, montmorillonite aqueous suspension and cellulose xanthate. The clay was previously exfoliated in water, and the resulting suspension was then added to the mixture of NR latex with cellulose xanthate. Morphological, rheometric, mechanical, and dynamic mechanical properties were evaluated, and an increase in these properties was observed upon the addition of cellulose and clay nanomaterials to the rubber matrix. The results show the advantage in using cellulose as a nanopolymer as well as MMT as nanofiller. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2011  相似文献
