Wireless video applications in 3G and beyond   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
This article surveys wireless video applications that have been commercialized recently or are expected to go to market in 3G (and beyond) mobile networks, mainly covering error control technologies in view of "wireless video." We introduce several related 3GPP standards including circuit-switched multimedia telephony, end-to-end packet-switched streaming, multimedia messaging service, and multimedia broadcast /multimedia service. We also review the supporting technologies for those four applications. The article concludes with a discussion of error control and rate control adaptability to network QoS variation, which is distinct from wired networks and critical to wireless networks. With respect to MBMS, we point out that required cell transmission power is crucial when realizing meaningful multicast coverage, and suggest a system that integrates different unicast and multicast networks, application-layer data repair, and transmission scheduling.  相似文献

The deployment of 3G/LTE networks and advancements in smart mobile devices had led to high demand for multimedia streaming over wireless network. The rapid increasing demand for multimedia content poses challenges for all parties in a multimedia streaming system, namely, content providers, wireless network service providers, and smart device makers. Content providers and mobile network service providers are both striving to improve their streaming services while utilizing advancing technologies. Smart device makers endeavor to improve processing power and displays for better viewing experience. Ultimately, the common goal shared by content providers, network service providers, and smart device manufactures is to improve the QoE for users. QoE is both an objective and a subjective metric measuring the streaming quality experience by end users. It may be measured by streaming bitrate, playback smoothness, video quality metrics like Peak to Signal Noise Ratio, and other user satisfaction factors. There have been efforts made to improve the streaming experiences in all these aspects. In this paper, we conducted a survey on existing literatures on QoE of video streaming to gain a deeper and more complete understanding of QoE quality metrics. The goal is to inspire new research directions in defining better QoE and improving QoE in existing and new streaming services such as adaptive streaming and 3D video streaming.  相似文献

Mobile next-generation networks (NGNs) are a necessary element in reaching the goal of truly ubiquitous computing. The Universal Mobile Telecommunication System, the third-generation mobile service concept, is a technology step to mobile NGNs. We can view NGNs as a merger of the Internet and intranets with mobile networks and with media and broadcast technologies. The Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) is-from a radio perspective-a third-generation cellular technology, which is defined by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in its IMT-2000 framework (2001). From a conceptual point of view, it represents a technology step to mobile NGNs' facilitating ubiquitous computing. Researchers conceived UMTS to combine Internet protocol (IP) and mobile technologies to offer personal communication and personalized content everywhere. Its goal is to apply Internet protocols for mobile services control and end-to-end applications. By analyzing the trends of key technologies, we can see how they drive the evolution of the Internet and mobile communications toward mobile NGNs. In this article, I describe the IP-based approach of UMTS for the provision of mobile multimedia services. The integration of WLAN into the UMTS architecture could indicate that the field is moving toward separating mobile and fixed Internet.  相似文献

Guaranteeing continuous streaming of multimedia data from service providers to the users is a challenging task in wireless ad hoc networks, particularly when node mobility is considered. The topological dynamics introduced by node mobility are further exacerbated by the natural grouping behavior of mobile users, which leads to frequent network partitioning. Network partitioning poses significant challenges to the provisioning of continuous multimedia streaming services in wireless ad hoc networks, since the partitioning disconnects many mobile users from the centralized streaming service. In this paper, we propose NonStop, a collection of novel middleware-based run-time algorithms that ensures the continuous availability of such multimedia streaming services, while minimizing the overhead involved. The network-wide continuous streaming coverage is achieved by partition prediction and service replication on the streaming sources and assisted by distributed selection of streaming sources on regular mobile nodes and users. The proposed algorithms are validated by extensive results from performance evaluations.  相似文献

第三代移动通信(3G)系统将Internet和移动通信相结合,使得移动通信中业务的数量和种类得到前所未有的增长。各种实时和多媒体业务的不断涌现,要求提供端到端的服务质量(QoS)保证。与Internet相比,3G系统中的QoS具有自身的特点,给3G系统QoS的实现带来更大的技术挑战。本文总结了这一领域近年来众多的研究成果,对实现3G系统中的QoS所面临的挑战进行分析,指出了几种技术解决途径,提出了无线接口的QoS实现框架,最后展望了3G的未来及支持QoS的技术发展方向。  相似文献

This paper provides a novel design concept for advanced mobile multi interface terminals with radio network aggregation capability and enhanced quality of service (QoS) provisioning for multimedia services (voice, video and data) in heterogeneous wireless and mobile networks. A new module is established which provides the best QoS and lowest cost for any given multimedia service by using simultaneously all available wireless and mobile access networks for a given traffic flow. This novel adaptive QoS module with adaptive QoS routing algorithm is called advanced QoS routing algorithm (AQoSRA), which is defined independently from any existing and future radio access technology. The performance of our proposal is evaluated using simulations and analysis with multi-interface mobile stations with AQoSRA within, carrying multimedia traffic in heterogeneous mobile and wireless environment with coexistence of multiple Radio Access Technologies, such as 3G, 4G as well as future 5G radio access networks. The analysis of the proposed framework for radio networks aggregation in advanced mobile terminals has shown overall better performances regarding the achievable throughput and multimedia access probability in heterogeneous wireless and mobile environment.  相似文献

The Internet has experienced tremendous expansion in the past several years. Demands for IP multimedia services are emerging. The third-generation (3G) wireless networks aim to support mobile users with numerous Internet services. 3G standards organizations are developing IP multimedia subsystems (IMS) to achieve seamless integration between Internet and 3G networks. Moreover, the collaboration between IETF, 3GPP, and 3GPP2 is essential to the development of IMS for next-generation networks. This article first provides an overview of 3GPP and 3GPP2 IMS and illustrates the IMS requirements, architectures, and functional models. We then discuss potential scalability issues in IMS. Content distribution in general, and multicasting in particular, over a wired network to static hosts can be realized by placing proxies and gateways at several parts of the network. However, if the end hosts are mobile over heterogeneous wireless access networks, one needs to consider many operational issues such as network detection, handoff, join and leave latency, and desired level of quality of service, as well as caching and load balancing. This article surveys a set of protocols and technologies that offer multicast-based services for streaming multimedia in a mobile environment. It also brings forth some of the issues related to mobile content distribution in the wireless Internet that may be helpful during its deployment by application service providers.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose an OSA-based development environment for interworking WLAN and 3G cellular networks. The main goal of our work is to establish and create an environment that can serve as a demonstration of a working network for OSA-based application developers while featuring mobile services over the interworked LAN and 3G cellular networks. The proposed simulating environment has (i) a location update scheme that is used to obtain mobile users' locations and status information over the interworked WLAN and cellular networks, (ii) an instant message gateway (IMG) simulator that is developed to send and receive generic messages over the interworked WLAN and cellular networks, and (iii) a mapping of Parlay APIs onto SIP signaling messages for multiparty call applications over the interworked WLAN and cellular networks. An illustrated OSA-based application that utilizes the corresponding system functions and modules is developed and verified using the proposed simulating environment. Quality-of-service (QoS) routing is the key to support multimedia services in wireless multihop networks. The goal of QoS routing is to find satisfactory paths that support the end-to-end QoS requirements of the multimedia flows. Previous work has demonstrated a framework for supporting QoS routing in mobile ad hoc networks, where two novel mechanisms for dynamic channel assignment, called the minimum-blocking and bandwidth-reallocation channel-assignment (MBCA/BRCA) algorithms, were proposed. MBCA/BRCA are on-demand channel assignment methods that reactively provide a differentiated service treatment to multimedia traffic flows at the link level using novel techniques for end-to-end path QoS maximization. Efficient QoS routing is then accomplished by giving the routing mechanism access to QoS information, thus coupling the coarse grain (routing) and fine grain (congestion control) resource allocation. In this paper, the specifics and individual mechanisms of the MBCA/BRCA algorithms are presented, whereas their effectiveness and the manner in which they interact in order to contribute to the overall protocol performance is examined and documented. The system performance is studied through simulations experiments under various QoS traffic flows and network scenarios. The protocol's behavior and the changes introduced by variations on some of the mechanisms that make up the protocol is further investigated. As demonstrated, the MBCA/BRCA methods are able to increase system's aggregate traffic by 2.8 Kb/s, on average, comparing to a non-MBCA/BRCA dynamic channel-allocation scheme.  相似文献

In this article we investigate the trade-offs and the constraints for multimedia over mobile ad hoc CDMA networks, and propose a cross-layer distributed power control and scheduling protocol to resolve those trade-offs and constraints in order to provide high-quality video over wireless ad hoc CDMA networks. In particular, a distributed power control and scheduling protocol is proposed to control the incurred delay of video streaming over multihop wireless ad hoc networks, as well as the multiple access interference (MAI). We also investigate the impacts of Doppler spread and noisy channel estimates upon the end-to-end video quality, and provide a relatively robust system which employs a combination of power control and coding/interleaving to combat the effects of Doppler spread by exploiting the increased time diversity when the Doppler spread becomes large. Voice telephony is the predominant service on today's cellular mobile networks, in terms of number of customers, revenues and network usage. However, it is difficult to predict how long this will be the case given the rising demand for new Internet multimedia services. It is therefore essential that 3rd generation (3G) mobile networks support a voice telephony service, but also that these networks are also capable of providing Internet multimedia services using the same technology.This paper provides an overview of how voice telephony is provided in the initial phase of the universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS). It then describes how this is expected to evolve in later phases — so that voice telephony becomes one of a large number of multimedia services provided from a common Internet protocol-based mobile network.  相似文献

The proliferation of low-cost broadband air interfaces has paved the way to the introduction of high-definition multimedia services in mobile and wireless networks. The cost for network resources utilization, when provisioning such services, will play a prominent role in their commercial success, since the more spare resources that can be used, the more cheaply the services can be delivered to the end users. In the context of promoting the role of ad hoc networks as service platforms for high quality multimedia applications, this article first discusses and classifies a set of issues involved in quality of service (QoS) provisioning in ad hoc networks and then presents a congestion-free TDMA algorithm for end-to-end network resources assignment via an optimized mechanism that relies on capacity requests and grants. The article also illustrates a method for invoking this algorithm to achieve efficient end-to-end QoS provisioning and concludes by showing the superiority of the proposed algorithm, as compared to other recently proposed TDMA scheduling algorithms  相似文献

2.5G and 3G cellular networks are becoming more widespread and the need for value added services increases rapidly. One of the key services that operators seek to provide is streaming of rich multimedia content. However, network characteristics make the use of streaming applications very difficult with an unacceptable quality of service (QoS). The 3GPP standardization body has standardized streaming services that will benefit operators and users. There is a need for a mechanism that will enable a good quality multimedia streaming that uses the 3GPP standard. This paper describes an adaptive streaming algorithm that uses the 3GPP standard. It improves significantly the QoS in varying network conditions while monitoring its performance using queueing methodologies. The algorithm utilizes the available buffers on the route of the streaming data in a unique way that guarantees high QoS. The system is analytically modeled: the streaming server, the cellular network and the cellular client are modeled as cascaded buffers and the data is sequentially streamed between them. The proposed Adaptive streaming algorithm (ASA) controls these buffers’ occupancy levels by controlling the transmission and the encoding rates of the streaming server to achieve high QoS for the streaming. It overcomes the inherent fluctuations of the network bandwidth. The algorithm was tested on General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) and Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) networks. The results showed substantial improvements over other standard streaming methods used today.  相似文献

This paper proposes a network‐adaptive mechanism for HTTP‐based video streaming over wireless/mobile networks. To provide adaptive video streaming over wireless/mobile networks, the proposed mechanism consists of a throughput estimation scheme in the time‐variant wireless network environment and a video rate selection algorithm used to increase the streaming quality. The adaptive video streaming system with proposed modules is implemented using an open source multimedia framework and is validated over emulated wireless/mobile networks. The emulator helps to model and emulate network conditions based on data collected from actual experiments. The experiment results show that the proposed mechanism provides higher video quality than the existing system provides and a rate of video streaming almost void of freezing.  相似文献

Multimedia communication deals with the transfer, protocols, services, and mechanisms of discrete media data (such as text and graphics) and continuous media data (like audio and video) in/over digital networks. Such a communication requires all involved components to be capable of handling a well-defined quality of service (QoS). The most important QoS parameters are used to request: (1) the required capacities of the involved resources, (2) compliance to end-to-end delay and jitter as timing restrictions, and (3) restriction of the loss characteristics. In this paper, we describe the necessary issues and study the ability of current networks and communication systems to support distributed multimedia applications. Further, we discuss upcoming approaches and systems that promise to provide the necessary mechanisms and consider which issues are missing for a complete multimedia communication infrastructure  相似文献

The Internet evolution delineated through the last years has urged the wireless network community to support the deployment of IP multimedia services with guaranteed quality of service (QoS) in 3G wireless networks. This article copes with the interoperability between 3G wireless networks and wired next-generation IP networks, for the provision of services with an a priori known quality level over both environments. More specifically, the UMTS architecture as well as a prototypical implementation of the next-generation Internet based on DiffServ are considered. The article focuses on the mapping among the traffic classes of the two networks at the point where the networks converge, and discusses the requirements and possible solutions for their proper interworking at the signaling and user levels. Simulations prove that proper mapping among the traffic classes of each world is necessary in order to achieve the desired end-to-end traffic characteristics.  相似文献
