The rational combination of conductive nanocarbon with sulfur leads to the formation of composite cathodes that can take full advantage of each building block; this is an effective way to construct cathode materials for lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries with high energy density. Generally, the areal sulfur‐loading amount is less than 2.0 mg cm?2, resulting in a low areal capacity far below the acceptable value for practical applications. In this contribution, a hierarchical free‐standing carbon nanotube (CNT)‐S paper electrode with an ultrahigh sulfur‐loading of 6.3 mg cm?2 is fabricated using a facile bottom–up strategy. In the CNT–S paper electrode, short multi‐walled CNTs are employed as the short‐range electrical conductive framework for sulfur accommodation, while the super‐long CNTs serve as both the long‐range conductive network and the intercrossed mechanical scaffold. An initial discharge capacity of 6.2 mA·h cm?2 (995 mA·h g?1), a 60% utilization of sulfur, and a slow cyclic fading rate of 0.20%/cycle within the initial 150 cycles at a low current density of 0.05 C are achieved. The areal capacity can be further increased to 15.1 mA·h cm?2 by stacking three CNT–S paper electrodes—resulting in an areal sulfur‐loading of 17.3 mg cm?2—for the cathode of a Li–S cell. The as‐obtained free‐standing paper electrode are of low cost and provide high energy density, making them promising for flexible electronic devices based on Li–S batteries.  相似文献

Li‐S batteries can potentially deliver high energy density and power, but polysulfide shuttle and lithium dendrite formations on Li metal anode have been the major hurdle. The polysulfide shuttle becomes severe particularly when the areal loading of the active material (sulfur) is increased to deliver the high energy density and the charge/discharge current density is raised to deliver high power. This study reports a novel mechanochemical method to create trenches on the surface of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in free‐standing 3D porous CNT sponges. Unique spiral trenches are created by pressures during the chemical treatment process, providing polysulfide‐philic surfaces for cathode and lithiophilic surfaces for anode. The Li‐S cells made from manufacturing‐friendly sulfur‐sandwiched cathodes and lithium‐infused anodes using the mechanochemically treated electrodes exhibit a strikingly high areal capacity as high as 13.3 mAh cm?2, which is only marginally reduced even with a tenfold increase in current density (16 mA cm?2), demonstrating both high “cell‐level” energy density and power. The outstanding performance can be attributed to the significantly improved reaction kinetics and lowered overpotentials coming from the reduced interfacial resistance and charge transfer resistance at both cathodes and anodes. The trench–wall CNT sponge simultaneously tackles the most critical problems on both the cathodes and anodes of Li‐S batteries, and this method can be utilized in designing new electrode materials for energy storage and beyond.  相似文献

We present a detailed study of the influence of carbon nanotube (CNT) characteristics on the electrical conductivity of polystyrene nanocomposites produced using a latex‐based approach. We processed both industrially‐produced multi‐wall CNT (MWCNT) powders and MWCNTs from vertically‐aligned films made in‐house, and demonstrate that while the raw CNTs are individualized and dispersed comparably within the polymer matrix, the electrical conductivity of the final nanocomposites differs significantly due to the intrinsic characteristics of the CNTs. Owing to their longer length after dispersion, the percolation threshold observed using MWCNTs from vertically‐aligned films is five times lower than the value for industrially‐produced MWCNT powders. Further, owing to the high structural quality of the CNTs from vertically‐aligned films, the resulting composite films exhibit electrical conductivity of 103 S m?1 at 2 wt% CNTs. On the contrary, composites made using the industrially‐produced CNTs exhibit conductivity of only tens of S m?1. To our knowledge, the measured electrical conductivity for CNT/PS composites using CNTs from vertically‐aligned films is by far the highest value yet reported for CNT/PS nanocomposites at this loading.  相似文献

NiO nanoflakes are created with a simple hydrothermal method on 3D (three‐dimensional) graphene scaffolds grown on Ni foams by microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (MPCVD). Such as‐grown NiO‐3D graphene hierarchical composites are then applied as monolithic electrodes for a pseudo‐supercapacitor application without needing binders or metal‐based current collectors. Electrochemical measurements impart that the hierarchical NiO‐3D graphene composite delivers a high specific capacitance of ≈1829 F g?1 at a current density of 3 A g?1 (the theoretical capacitance of NiO is 2584 F g?1). Furthermore, a full‐cell is realized with an energy density of 138 Wh kg?1 at a power density of 5.25 kW kg?1, which is much superior to commercial ones as well as reported devices in asymmetric capacitors of NiO. More attractively, this asymmetric supercapacitor exhibits capacitance retention of 85% after 5000 cycles relative to the initial value of the 1st cycle.  相似文献

Hybrid nanostructured materials can exhibit different properties than their constituent components, and can enable decoupled engineering of energy conversion and transport functions. Novel means of building hybrid assemblies of crystalline C60 and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are presented, wherein aligned CNT films direct the crystallization and orientation of C60 rods from solution. In these hybrid films, the C60 rods are oriented parallel to the direction of the CNTs throughout the thickness of the film. High‐resolution imaging shows that the crystals incorporate CNTs during growth, yet grazing‐incidence X‐ray diffraction (GIXD) shows that the crystal structure of the C60 rods is not perturbed by the CNTs. Growth kinetics of the C60 rods are enhanced 8‐fold on CNTs compared to bare Si, emphasizing the importance of the aligned, porous morphology of the CNT films as well as the selective surface interactions between C60 and CNTs. Finally, it is shown how hybrid C60–CNT films can be integrated electrically and employed as UV detectors with a high photoconductive gain and a responsivity of 105 A W?1 at low biases (± 0.5 V). The finding that CNTs can induce rapid, directional crystallization of molecules from solution may have broader implications to the science and applications of crystal growth, such as for inorganic nanocrystals, proteins, and synthetic polymers.  相似文献

Natural materials such as bone and tooth achieve precisely tuned mechanical and interfacial properties by varying the concentration and orientation of their nanoscale constituents. However, the realization of such control in engineered foams is limited by manufacturing‐driven tradeoffs among the size, order, and dispersion uniformity of the building blocks. It is demonstrated how to manufacture nanocomposite foams with precisely controllable mechanical properties via aligned carbon nanotube (CNT) growth followed by atomic layer deposition (ALD). By starting with a low density CNT forest and varying the ALD coating thickness, we realize predictable ≈1000‐fold control of Young's modulus (14 MPa to 20 GPa, where Eρ 2.8), ultimate compressive strength (0.8 MPa to 0.16 GPa), and energy absorption (0.4 to 400 J cm–3). Owing to the continuous, long CNTs within the ceramic nanocomposite, the compressive strength and toughness of the new material are 10‐fold greater than commercially available aluminum foam over the same density range. Moreover, the compressive stiffness and strength equal that of compact bone at 10% lower density. Along with emerging technologies for scalable patterning and roll‐to‐roll manufacturing and lamination of CNT films, coated CNT foams may be especially suited to multifunctional applications such as catalysis, filtration, and thermal protection.  相似文献

A specially designed carbon nanotube (CNT) is developed for use in the early detection and treatment of cancer. The key functionalities for biomedical diagnosis and drug delivery are incorporated into the CNTs. In vivo imaging of live mice is achieved by intravenously injecting quantum dot (QD)‐conjugated CNT for the first time. With near infrared emission around 752 nm, the CNT with surface‐conjugated QD (CNT‐QD) exhibit a strong luminescence for non‐invasive optical in vivo imaging. CNT surface modification is achieved by a plasma polymerization approach that deposited ultra‐thin acrylic acid or poly(lactic‐co‐glycolic acid) (PLGA) films (∼3 nm) onto the nanotubes. The anticancer agent paclitaxel is loaded at 112.5 ± 5.8 µg mg−1 to PLGA‐coated CNT. Cytotoxicity of this novel drug delivery system is evaluated in vitro using PC‐3MM2 human prostate carcinoma cells and quantified by the 3‐(4,5‐dimethylthiazol‐2‐yl)‐2,5‐diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. The in vivo distribution determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP‐MS) indicates CNT‐QD uptake in various organs of live animals.  相似文献

Although Li‐oxygen batteries offer extremely high theoretical specific energy, their practical application still faces critical challenges. One of the main obstacles is the high charge overpotential caused by sluggish kinetics of charge transfer that is closely related to the morphology of discharge products and their distribution on the cathode. Here, a series of noble metal nanoparticles (Pd, Pt, Ru and Au) are encapsulated inside end‐opened carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by wet impregnation followed by thermal annealing. The resultant cathode materials exhibit a dramatic reduction of charge overpotentials compared to their counterparts with nanoparticles supported on CNT surface. Notably, the charge overpotential can be as low as 0.3 V when CNT‐encapsulated Pd nanoparticles are used on the cathode. The cathode also shows good stability during discharge–charge cycling. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that encapsulation of “guest” noble metal nanoparticles in “host” CNTs is able to strengthen the electron density on CNT surfaces, and to avoid the regional enrichment of electron density caused by the direct exposure of nanoparticles on CNT surface. These unique properties ensure the uniform coverage of Li2O2 nanocrystals on CNT surfaces instead of localized distribution of Li2O2 aggregation, thus providing efficient charge transfer for the decomposition of Li2O2.  相似文献

The current‐carrying capacity (CCC), or ampacity, of highly‐conductive, light, and strong carbon nanotube (CNT) fibers is characterized by measuring their failure current density (FCD) and continuous current rating (CCR) values. It is shown, both experimentally and theoretically, that the CCC of these fibers is determined by the balance between current‐induced Joule heating and heat exchange with the surroundings. The measured FCD values of the fibers range from 107 to 109 A m?2 and are generally higher than the previously reported values for aligned buckypapers, carbon fibers, and CNT fibers. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first time the CCR for a CNT fiber has been reported. The specific CCC value (i.e., normalized by the linear mass density) of these CNT fibers are demonstrated to be higher than those of copper.  相似文献

Rational assembly of carbon nanostructures into large‐area films is a key step to realize their applications in ubiquitous electronics and energy devices. Here, a self‐assembly methodology is devised to organize diverse carbon nanostructures (nanotubes, dots, microspheres, etc.) into homogeneous films with potentially infinite lateral dimensions. On the basis of studies of the redox reactions in the systems and the structures of films, the spontaneous deposition of carbon nanostructures onto the surface of the copper substrate is found to be driven by the electrical double layer between copper and solution. As a notable example, the as‐assembled multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) films display exceptional properties. They are a promising material for flexible electronics with superior electrical and mechanical compliance characteristics. Finally, two kinds of all‐solid‐state supercapacitors based on the self‐assembled MWCNT films are fabricated. The supercapacitor using carbon cloth as the current collector delivers an energy density of 3.5 Wh kg?1 and a power density of 28.1 kW kg?1, which are comparable with the state‐of‐the‐art supercapacitors fabricated by the costly single‐walled carbon nanotubes and arrays. The supercapacitor free of foreign current collector is ultrathin and shows impressive volumetric energy density (0.58 mWh cm?3) and power density (0.39 W cm?3) too.  相似文献
