In this letter, leaky-wave dispersion behavior is studied for a grounded biased-ferrite slab waveguide. The full-wave analysis encompasses space-wave leaky modes, surface waves, and magnetostatic modes supported by a ferrite slab as the magnetic bias field varies in strength. In particular, as the bias field increases from a value the TE leaky-wave cutoff frequencies of the isotropic slab split into two cutoff frequencies, resulting in complicated dispersion behavior of the corresponding forward and backward leaky waves. TM modes are unaffected by variation in the strength of the bias field for this orientation.  相似文献

The dispersion equation for space-charge waves (SCWs) that couples the wave vector of a traveling wave with frequency and the parameters of a semiconductor waveguide layer is obtained. Numerical analysis of the co-and contradirectional SCW-optical interaction for guided TE and TM modes in a waveguide structure based on n-GaAs is performed. It is demonstrated that the power exchange between the TE modes is more effective than the power exchange between the TM modes. The intervals of the waveguide layer thickness with a relatively high efficiency of the mode transformation are determined.  相似文献

The permittivity of a plane layer is assumed to vary continuously as a function of distance measured from the surface. Solutions for the field distributions of surface waves on the inhomogeneous layer are developed with the WKB technique. Transcendental equations for the phase velocity are derived for TE and TM modes. These equations are solved most conveniently with the aid of phase-velocity graphs which are included. The accuracy of the solution is verified by comparison with the rigorous solution for an exponential inhomogeneity.  相似文献

In two-dimensional optical waveguides with the varied refractive index, approximate analytic solutions of the leaky modes are derived by using an asymptotic analysis for both transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes. Numerical simulations show that the asymptotic solutions of the leaky modes are quite close to the exact ones. The results are useful in the eigenmode method, where the leaky modes appear if a perfectly matched layer (PML) is used to terminate the transverse directions of optical waveguides.  相似文献

The two-dimensional theory of a distributed feedback (DFB) laser (which was previously presented and applied to the analysis of the laser threshold conditions for the transverse-electric (TE) mode in a simple three-layer waveguide structure) is developed to treat both TE and transverse-magnetic (TM) modes in a four-layer waveguide structure with a thin grating layer, which more closely reflects actual DFB laser structure. The differences between TE and TM modes for the dispersion relations and the laser threshold conditions are clarified. The effects of the waveguide structure (including grating layer thickness, refractive indexes of layers, coupling constant, and corrugation period) on the threshold gains and the gain differences between the two longitudinal modes on both sides of the Bragg frequencies are studied in detail for both TE and TM modes  相似文献

Waveguide properties of two- and three-layer planar structures on the basis of a high-temperature superconductor (HTS) and a dielectric is considered with allowance for the time dispersion of their permittivity. The existence conditions and dispersion dependences of surface and bulk waves in the region of temperatures TT c are obtained. The frequency dependence of the depth at which surface modes penetrate into each medium are found and the polarization structure of such modes is determined. It is shown that TE and TM bulk waves can propagate in an HTS waveguide in two frequency intervals. Variation in the mode index of bulk TM modes by unity at the frequency of the longitudinal optical phonon is found.  相似文献

In this paper, the orthogonality relations between complex modes are investigated to demonstrate the coupling effect that exists along a transverse direction (z-axis) between TE/sup z/ and TM/sup z/ hybrid modes when power storage, loss, or leakage occur in the longitudinal direction (y-axis) of a transmission line. As an example, the parallel-plate waveguide modes are used to study a laterally shielded top-open microstrip line. The study of leaky waves is a very interesting application of the novel orthogonality relations derived in this paper. This study is carried out using the correct and incorrect orthogonality formulations, showing that physically valid results are obtained only when the orthogonality relations derived in this paper are properly introduced in the formulation. A physical explanation of this novel coupling effect between TE/sup z/ and TM/sup z/ hybrid modes with respect to the y-direction is given in terms of inhomogeneous plane waves. Comparisons with previous results for a laterally shielded slot-line antenna are presented to confirm the accuracy and usefulness of this novel proposed method.  相似文献

In two-dimensional optical waveguides with the varied refractive index along the transverse direction, the wave propagation is accurately computed. The asymptotic mode solutions are taken as initial guesses for Rayleigh Quotation iteration. More accurate solutions by considering leaky modes and both wave propagation in the transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) are obtained. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the results from Rayleigh Quotation iteration with the asymptotic solutions are better than ones from Lapack solver when the norms of modes are large enough. Thus, it is the best way to combine the two solvers together. This method is particularly useful to the design and simulation of micro waveguide with core layer refractive index fluctuation.  相似文献

The properties of guiding modes of a slab waveguide composed of impedance-matched $epsilon $ (permittivity) negative and $mu $ (permeability) negative media were investigated. This special type of waveguide supports only a single mode having polarization degeneracy: transverse-electric (TE)- and transverse-magnetic (TM)-polarized light waves always have the same propagation wavevectors. However, the overall power flow directions of these degenerate TE and TM modes are always opposite to each other.   相似文献

Analytical results for propagation Iosses of guided modes in a graded-index slab waveguide (GISW) with metal cladding are presented. When the permittivity in the guiding layer decreases linearly away from the metal surface, the attenuation constant alpha/sub G/ of well-guided modes, TE and TM, is approximately proportional to only the ratio (Delta epsilon/sub i/ / epsilon/sub 0/) / d/sub i/, where Delta epsilon/sub i/ is the increment in the permittivity at the metal surface in the direction of the polarization of optical waves, d/sub i/i is the diffusion depth in this direction, and epsilon/sub 0/ is the permittivity of free space.  相似文献

We study the modes of a symmetric thin-film slab waveguide composed of birefringent crystalline material in the film and in the equivalent substrate and superstrate. In addition we assume that the optical axes of the uniaxial materials of film and substrate are parallel to each other and also parallel (coplanar) to the plane of the film. This simple anisotropic waveguide has interesting properties. It supports only hybrid modes but in the limit of propagation along the optical axis and at right angles to it the modes become almost of the TE and TM type. Moreover, some of the modes become leaky waves as they propagate at increasingly larger angles relative to the optical axis of the dielectric material. For guides made of materials whose ordinary refractive index nois larger than the extraordinary index ne, the extraordinary wave modes, which approximate TE modes, become leaky; and forn_{e} > n_{o}, the ordinary wave modes, which approximate TM modes, become leaky. The leakage losses are large near a "critical angle," where leakage begins to appear but may be insignificant at larger angles, measured between the optical axis and the direction of propagation.  相似文献

A symmetric five-layer slab waveguide with anisotropic and dispersive left-handed material (LHM) in the core and righthanded material (RHM) in other layers is investigated. Through Maxwell’s equations and a transfer matrix method, the dispersion equations for the TE oscillating guided modes are obtained. Under consideration of two extremely anisotropic cases, some mode dispersion curves are plotted. The zero-order TE oscillating guided mode exists. Meanwhile, with the increase of mode number, their dispersion curves move to left or right, corresponding to positive or negative dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability in the longitudinal direction. Besides, as the core thickness increases, mode dispersion properties change and three propagation properties appear: positive group velocity, negative group velocity and zero group velocity. The negative group velocity indicates the characteristics of the left-handed materials, and the zero group velocity implies that electromagnetic waves are trapped in the waveguide completely.  相似文献

Recently, it has been demonstrated that some field problems involving optical fibers can be solved more easily by enclosing the fiber with a perfectly matched layer (PML). In this paper, we investigate the dispersion relation for the transverse electric (TE), transverse magnetic (TM), and hybrid modes of such a fiber-PML combination. Within a good approximation, two types of modes can be distinguished: the leaky type, only depending on the fiber characteristics, and the so-called Berenger type, mainly depending on the PML characteristics. Analytical expressions for the propagation constants of the higher order modes are derived and compared with the exact values for two relevant examples: a vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) cavity and a monomode fiber.  相似文献

A multilevel grating coupler based on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) material structure is proposed to realize the coupling between waveguide and waveguide or waveguide and fiber. This coupler is compatible with the current fabrication facilities for complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology with vertical coupling. This structure can realize coupling when the beams with transverse electric (TE) polarization and transverse magnetic (TM) polarization are incident at the same time. The influences of the grating coupler parameters including wavelength, the thickness of waveguide layer, the thickness of SiO2 layer and the number of steps on the TE mode and TM mode coupling efficiencies are discussed. Theory researches and simulation results indicate that the wavelength range is from 1533 nm to 1580 nm when the TE mode and TM mode coupling efficiencies are both more than 40% as the grating period is 0.99 μm. The coupling efficiencies of the incident TE and TM modes are 49.9% and 49.5% at the wavelength of 1565 nm, respectively, and the difference between them is only 0.4%.  相似文献

The propagation characteristics of leaky waves in a helix waveguide covered with a slitted cylinder are presented by a method of transverse network representation. The main interest is in helix waveguides with small pitch angles, characterized by a hybrid mode consisting of TE/sub 01/, and a small amount of TM/sub 01/ modes. The leaky wave discussed in this paper may then be regarded as a perturbation of the TM/sub 01/ wave by the slitted cylinder outside the helix. The radiation, metal, and dielectric losses are calculated numerically at a frequency of 50 GHz. The relation between the radiation loss and aperture angle of slit is very different from that of an ordinary leaky waveguide composed of a slitted cylinder without helix, especially when the distance between the helix and shield cylinder is about a quarter of the radial wavelength. The metal and dielectric losses are the same order as radiation loss, however the dielectric loss decreases as the power factor /spl epsiv/"/ /spl epsiv/' increases. The measured total attenuation constant averages about 5 dB/km, almost twice the theoretical value.  相似文献

The Wentzel, Kramers and Brillouin (WKB) approximation is used to solve the wave equations for propagation of guided waves in rectangular waveguide containing an inhomogeneous dielectric. The simplest form of anisotropy is used to characterize the relative dielectric constant, i.e., it is assumed that the relative permittivity tensor is diagonalized with respect to the waveguide coordinants. Each of the elements of the relative permittivity tensor is allowed to vary continuously across the broad dimension of the waveguide. The TE/sub nm/ and TM/sub nm/ cases are analyzed for the instance of completely filled guide, while the TE/sub no/ modes are considered for slab-loaded guide.  相似文献

利用射频溅射技术在一个单模玻璃光波导的局部表面淀积一层两端呈梯度的高折射率透明氧化物薄膜,形成低损失、高灵敏度平面复合光波导芯片。这种结构能够使得玻璃光波导内沿同一路径传播的横电基模(TE0)与横磁基模(TM0)在梯度薄膜区间产生纵向空间分离,导致TE0模的消逝场相比TM0模显著增强。利用复合光波导芯片,结合棱镜-样品池组合体和集成式选偏光探测器研制出基于偏振干涉测量的OWG-01型生化检测仪。对液体折射率响应的测试结果表明复合光波导芯片的热光效应非常小,而仪器的测量误差主要来自待测液体自身的折射率随温度的变化。  相似文献

为了研究1维方形掺杂光子晶体波导中缺陷模的色散,采用特征矩阵的方法研究了1维方形掺杂光子晶体波导中TE波和TM波缺陷模的变化特征,得到了TE波和TM波的缺陷模随色散强度、色散厚度变化的结果。结果表明,色散强度和色散厚度都会对1维方形掺杂光子晶体波导中TE波和TM波的缺陷模产生明显的影响;利用TE波和TM波的缺陷模随色散强度、色散厚度的变化规律,可以有效地实现对1维方形掺杂光子晶体波导中TE波和TM波各传输模式的有效控制。  相似文献

Propagation of electromagnetic waves in a waveguide with an arbitrary cross section is considered. The waveguide is filled with a magnetoactive anisotropic medium periodically modulated in space and time. The wave equations for the potentials of transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) fields are derived. Expressions for the TE and TM waveguide fields observed in the region of weak interaction between the signal wave and the modulation wave are found in the first approximation for small modulation indexes of the filling. The frequency near which strong (resonance) interaction between the signal wave and the modulation wave develops is expressed in an analytic form. The propagation of TE and TM waves in the strong-interaction region is investigated.  相似文献
