In this paper, we present a semiclassical wave equation analysis using a coupled-mode expansion formalism to study the effect of a microwave field on a train of short optical pulses co-propagating in a traveling-wave modulator structure. This device can continuously shift the central frequency of light pulses. We demonstrate the effect of the applied field on the light spectrum, the dependence on the relation between microwave wavelength and pulse length, and the effect of changing the interaction length or the power of the applied microwave field. The results of the calculation of these effects are presented.  相似文献

We report continuous frequency shifting of a train of mode-locked pulses of light by up to /spl plusmn/400 GHz using electrooptic frequency shifting (EOFS). Dynamic, continuous, and accurate shifting of the optical pulses is achieved by controlling the phase and power of a single frequency microwave signal in a traveling wave phase modulator structure. Operation of the device under different microwave power and optical pulse length settings was investigated in order to study spectral distortion predicted to occur at high levels of frequency shifting and when using long pulses. Possible techniques for future device improvement were proposed and preliminary tests were performed. The use of a second-harmonic component of the microwave drive signal leads to a longer region of constant amplitude gradient and results in reduced distortion.  相似文献

The use of spatially periodic microbend transducers to produce phase shift in single-mode fibers has been investigaed. Phase shift of32deg/mum2of transducer displacement per centimeter of trans-3.7deg/mum2. cm for a 1023-μm peroid. Phase shifts as large as 560°/cm of transducer length were obtained with the shorter period transducer. These results are compared with predictions based on coupled-mode theory.  相似文献

Air-core photonic-bandgap fiber-optic gyroscope   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We report the demonstration of the first air-core photonic-bandgap fiber gyroscope. Because the optical mode in the sensing coil travels largely through air, which has much smaller Kerr, Faraday, and thermal constants than silica, far lower dependencies on power, magnetic field, and temperature fluctuations are predicted. With a 235-m fiber coil, we observe a minimum detectable rotation rate of /spl sim/2.7/spl deg//h and a long-term stability of /spl sim/2/spl deg//h, which are consistent with the Rayleigh backscattering coefficient of the fiber and comparable to that measured with a conventional fiber.  相似文献

A millimeter-wave optical frequency shifter (OFS) using coupled inverted slot lines (ISL's) is integrated on an X-cut LiNbO3 substrate, Theoretical analysis shows that the use of the coupled ISL's makes it possible to decrease the distance between the arms of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer for optical frequency shifting. The ISL coupling characteristics measured at 60 GHz coincide well with the calculated ones. A 60-GHz frequency shifting of a 1.3-μm optical carrier is experimentally demonstrated using two- and four-branch OFS's. The theoretical analysis and experimental results of the two-branch OFS show that the ratio of the frequency-shifted signal intensity to the optical image intensity is in proportion to the difference between the applied dc-bias voltage and the half-wave voltage. The four-branch OFS consists of two two-branch OFS's excited 180° out of phase, and can suppress the optical image and original carrier simultaneously. The measurements of the four-branch OFS reveal the optical image suppression of over 12 dB and the original carrier suppression of 5 dB below the desired 60-GHz frequency-shifted signal  相似文献

在光纤陀螺中,保偏光纤性能的优劣直接影响陀螺的输出精度和温度特性.理论分析了光纤参数,特别是光纤涂层与陀螺稳定性的关系,通过改善特定的光纤涂层指标,光纤在时变温度场下的可靠性得到提高,并最终保证了陀螺具有更强的抗环境干扰能力.将理论预测与实际工程应用相结合,采用改进后的保偏光纤绕制的陀螺,表现出了更好的温度性能,基于对保偏光纤特性的理论和初步实验研究,强调了一直以来被忽视的保偏光纤参数在光纤陀螺应用中的重要性.  相似文献

An all-fibre frequency shifter operating at 3 MHz is described. The device was based on a SAW structure using interdigital transducers on a PZT4 ceramic substrate. Carrier and sideband suppression were 29 and 35 dB, respectively, with 4.5% of the input optical power shifted for an electrical drive of 2 W.<>  相似文献

Highly correlated transmit and local oscillator signals for use in a narrowband heterodyne system are derived from a single submillimeter source. One component is Doppler shifted in frequency by a mechanically rotating device before transmission. The frequency translation does not lead to significant spectral deterioration. Under the condition of only a small differential delay between transmit and local oscillator paths, most phase and frequency instabilities of the submillimeter source are eliminated at the intermediate frequency. The paper describes the frequency shifter's mode of operation and a practical 637GHz design. Based on this design we simulate the effect of various imperfections in the frequency translation process on the output spectrum. Preliminary measurements at 140GHz are included.  相似文献
