Editing strategies in television news documentaries

This study describes the editing techniques used in four renowned television news documentaries that aired between 1954 and 1982. It is informed by Peirce's theories of signs, and realist and symbolic film theory, as well as some of the understandings common to broadcast journalists. The analysis attempts to bridge subdisciplinary boundaries to advance an accessible vocabulary for discussing journalistic representational strategies. The prevalence of continuity and thematic editing styles, special transitional effects, audio track synchronization, and differing cutting rates was quantitatively analyzed and linked to classic film realism and montage strategies. The quantitative findings and a comparative case study analysis of the structural nuances of each documentary illustrate the variety of representational strategies used by network journalists. These findings are discussed in light of analysts' assertions that televised reports have become increasingly journalist centered.

基于DSP平台的数字视频源的系统设计

提出了一种基于TI DSK6711平台的将模拟视频进行数字化处理的系统设计方案,其中视频解码模块完成复合视频信号数字化,音频A／D模块完成语音信号数字化,同时采用大容量的SDRAM存储器作为帧缓存,用FPGA完成其控制接口,整个系统以DSK6711为核心构成数据处理单元,此系统可以完成电视图像信号的去隔行扫描转换、低分辨率向高分辨率转换等视频信号处理,也可以进行实时视频和音频数据压缩处理。

A Digital Television Sequence Store

This paper describes the capabilities and design of a new digital video system which permits a user to record and playback sequences, up to 80 s long, of digitized color television signal. In addition, a user may process the stored video via the associated computer and view the results. The above system, which is called the DVS (Digital Video Store), is intended as a simulation tool for investigating the effects of various video coding and processing algorithms.     

Matte-Based Restoration of Vintage Video

In this paper, we describe a new method for restoring digitized vintage video with film wear artifacts. Such artifacts result in partially or completely missing information. To maximize use of observed data, we cast the problem as that of recovering mattes of artifacts. More specifically, we extract the distributions of artifact color and its fractional (alpha) contribution to the frame. To account for spatial color discontinuity and pixel occlusion or disocclusion, we introduce the alpha-modulated bilateral filter. The problem is solved as a 3-D spatio-temporal conditional random field (CRF) with artifact color and (discretized) alpha as states. Inference is done through belief propagation. Results verify the effectiveness of our method. Furthermore, we can produce a synthetically generated vintage footage using extracted artifact information from actual vintage video.

Location based abstraction of user generated mobile videos

Demand for efficient ways to represent vast amount of video data has grown rapidly in recent years. The advances in positioning services have led to new possibilities in combining location information to video content. In this paper we present an automatic video editing system for geotagged mobile videos. In our solution the system creates automatically a video summary from a set of unedited video clips. Location information and timestamps are used to group video clips with the same context properties. The groups are used to create a video summary where subshots from same context group are represented as scenes. The novelty in our solution lies in combining geotags with low level content analysis tools in video abstraction. We have evaluated the created video summaries with a group of users and the system usability for service creation by building a semi-automatic web-based video editing service. The evaluations prove that our concept is useful as it improves coherence and enjoyability of the automatic video summaries.
