The performance of Optical Burst Switched (OBS) networks is compared to that of Optical Circuit Switched (OCS) networks in terms of bandwidth efficiency. Two traffic flow models are employed to investigate the effects of traffic grooming, packetization, buffering and burst assembly on bandwidth efficiency and utilization. Traffic is represented by fluid-flow continuous bit streams in the first model and by packet-based discrete flows in the second model. It is shown that the parameters of traffic characteristics and burst assembly have significant impact on the relative bandwidth savings of OBS. The bandwidth efficiency of OBS compared to OCS should not be taken for granted and has to be examined carefully on a case by case basis. 相似文献

Optical Burst Switching (OBS) has been proposed as a promising switching technology for the next generation of optical transport networks. In this paper, we address the issue of how to provide proportional differentiated services in OBS networks. Firstly, a Dynamic Wavelength Selection (DWS) scheme is introduced to provide proportional differentiated services in bufferless OBS networks by dynamically assigning more and longer periods of wavelengths to high priority classes. This scheme can also utilize wavelengths efficiently because the wavelengths are shared among different classes. Next, a Delayed Burst Assignment (DBA) scheme is introduced, by which bursts of the high priority class are given a higher probability for reserving wavelengths by scheduling the bursts of the low priority class with a delay to provide quality of service (QoS) in OBS networks. The integration of these two schemes provides proportional differentiated services and improves the burst loss performance by giving the burst head packet (BHP) two opportunities of scheduling its data burst (DB). 相似文献

We propose a new burst scheduling mechanism for Optical Burst-Switched (OBS) networks. The new approach is made possible by
gathering data bursts into groups and performing the scheduling decision for each group collectively. In OBS group-scheduling,
bursts will not be considered for scheduling until a pre-defined time period elapses, during which the group of burst header
packets would be gathered. By transforming a set of data bursts into a set of corresponding time intervals, the problem of
scheduling these bursts is transformed into a combinatorial optimization problem. Graph algorithms are applied to obtain the
maximum number of non-overlapping bursts. The proposed OBS group-scheduling scheme is shown to improve the performance of
OBS networks over existing scheduling schemes in terms of burst loss probability and channel utilization. With an extension
through a sequential optimization, using a Branch-and-Bound technique, the proposed scheme can support multiple classes of
service. It is shown that the new scheduling approach has several desired characteristics including fairness and service differentiability
among classes in terms of burst loss probability and channel utilization. 相似文献

Optical burst switching (OBS) is an emerging technology that allows variable size data bursts to be transported directly over dense wavelength division multiplexing links. Although several quality-of-service (QoS) schemes have been proposed for OBS networks, how to provide QoS at the high speed required by the OBS network is still an open question. In this paper, we propose a novel O(1) runtime contour-based priority algorithm that provides complete priority isolation among different priorities. This is the first practical O(1) runtime priority algorithm proposed for OBS, and it is well suited to high-speed hardware implementation. 相似文献

Optical burst switching (OBS) is a promising technology which is able to well support bursty traffic and is also technically
mature. One critical issue in OBS networks is burst contention. Several methods have been proposed to solve contention such
as wavelength converters and fiber delay lines. Among those methods, routing is relatively cost-effective and technically
tractable and has been extensively researched. A framework for evaluation the strength of this method is presented in this
paper. As routing is a fundamental issue in optical networks and not only confined to OBS, the framework is applicable to
a class of connectionless and non-buffer all-optical networks. Through comprehensive analysis of the relation between the
total traffic load offered to the network and the traffic load on each link together with some mathematical skills, a lower
bound on the burst loss probability is figured out. Extending it by minimizing the lower bound over all reasonable topologies,
another lower bound is worked out. With the help of the two lower bounds, comprehensive prospect on the effectiveness of routing
and network topologies in reducing the burst loss probability is shown for the first time to the best of our knowledge. 相似文献

Optical burst switching (OBS) is a promising switching technology to exploit the potential benefits of optical communication and, at the same time, support statistical multiplexing of data traffic at a fine granularity. To quantify its benefits, the paper describes several typical burst assembly algorithms and studies their impact on the assembled burst traffic characteristics as well as the performance of TCP traffic. Also described is a proactive burst scheduling algorithm, called burst overlap reduction algorithm (BORA), which schedules locally assembled bursts in such a way as to reduce burst contention at downstream nodes in OBS networks. Furthermore, to provide analytical insights into performance evaluation of OBS networks, a burst loss model at an OBS node and its extension to different reservation protocols are presented. 相似文献

An introduction to optical burst switching 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Optical burst switching is a promising solution for all-optical WDM networks. It combines the benefits of optical packet switching and wavelength routing while taking into account the limitations of the current all-optical technology. In OBS, the user data is collected at the edge of the network, sorted based on a destination address, and grouped into variable sized bursts. Prior to transmitting a burst, a control packet is created and immediately sent toward the destination in order to set up a bufferless optical path for its corresponding burst. After an offset delay time, the data burst itself is transmitted without waiting for a positive acknowledgment from the destination node. The OBS framework has been widely studied in the past few years because it achieves high traffic throughput and high resource utilization. However, despite the OBS trademarks such as dynamic connection setup or strong separation between data and control, there are many differences in the published OBS architectures. In this article we summarize in a systematic way the main OBS design parameters and the solutions that have been proposed in the open literature. 相似文献

Optical burst switching (OBS) is a promising technology for next-generation optical networks. Slotted OBS is an improved version of OBS to reduce burst loss rate, in which wavelength channels are divided into time slots. Slotted OBS has an implicit and under-used property that resources for two bursts with the same source and the same destination are interchangeable. The property further means that resource for a long-distance burst can be partially used by a short-distance burst. In this paper, we utilize the property to design a resource reservation scheme for slotted OBS networks. The scheme reserves a batch of slots every time; the specific number of slots is calculated according to number of arrived bursts and partial success rate (a newly introduced conception in this paper) at each node. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can get lower burst loss rate, comparing with the well-performing two-way signaling scheme. 相似文献
