An overview is given of the state-of-the-affairs of wireless community networks. Driving forces and stakeholders of the projects and the applications and services will be presented for some carefully selected cases. Holding the promise of making ubiquitous mobile access to IP-based applications and services a reality, wireless local area networks have been deployed in an unlimited way over the last few years. Due to their robust characteristics, distributed MAC protocols are the most widely used mechanisms to arbitrate access to the wireless channel. However, their ability to achieve high medium usage efficiency while providing services with meaningful performance assurances is being challenged by a wide range of existing and emerging applications that have lately migrated from other telecommunication networks to wireless environments. This article aims to provide a comprehensive study of the limitations and merits of mechanisms that have been proposed toward embedding QoS support to distributed wireless MAC protocols. A hybrid scheme that incorporates signaling and information sharing is proposed, and extensive simulation experiments are run to assess the efficiency of the access schemes in maximizing utilization of the wireless bandwidth while providing QoS support for heterogeneous applications.  相似文献

Recent advances in wireless inter-vehicle communication systems enable the establishment of vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANET) and create significant opportunities for the deployment of a wide variety of applications and services to vehicles. In this work, we investigate the problem of developing services that can provide car drivers with time-sensitive information about traffic conditions and roadside facilities. We introduce the vehicular information transfer protocol (VITP), a location- aware, application-layer, communication protocol designed to support a distributed service infrastructure over vehicular ad- hoc networks. We describe the key design concepts of the VITP protocol and infrastructure. We provide an extensive simulation study of VITP performance on large-scale vehicular networks under realistic highway and city traffic conditions. Our results demonstrate the viability and effectiveness of VITP in providing location-aware services over VANETs.  相似文献

The market demand for wireless communications has been demonstrated by the rapid growth of different second-generation wireless technologies that are optimized for particular applications and environments. Obvious examples include: digital cellular systems like GSM, ADC, PDC,and DCS1800 for widespread vehicular and pedestrian services, and cordless telecommunication systems based on CT2, DECT, and PHS standards for residential, business, and public cordless access applications. Efforts are also underway to consolidate the various radio environments and applications under a single standard for third generation wireless, i.e., FPLMTS. In the area of personal mobility, with the recent availability of “personal” numbers in various countries (e.g., 500 numbers in the United States), many fixed network operators are starting to offer such personal mobility services as “personal number service” and “number portability”. These services represent initial stages of full personal mobility that will be provided by UPT in both wireline as well as wireless environments. The expected heavy demand for PCS in the United States and the underlying market/regulatory forces are driving the standardization and business activity. A number of air interface standards for the 1900 MHZ PCS band are being considered, which are based on TDMA, CDMA, and FDMA technologies singly or in combination. Many are variations of existing digital cellular and cordless telecommunications technologies. PCS networking standards are also being developed; both for standalone systems and for systems that will utilize public switched network capabilities  相似文献

Mobile commerce (m-commerce) is an emerging discipline involving applications, mobile devices, middleware, and wireless networks. While most of existing e-commerce applications can be modified to run in a wireless environment, m-commerce also involves many more new applications that become possible only due to the wireless infrastructure. These applications include mobile financial services, user and location specific mobile advertising, mobile inventory management, wireless business re-engineering, and mobile interactive games. In addition to device and wireless constraints, mobile commerce would also be impacted by the dependability of wireless infrastructure. Unlike e-commerce applications that usually run on fixed networking infrastructure of fairly high dependability (approaching to about 100%), m-commerce applications may not receive such high dependability from the existing and emerging wireless infrastructure. So far, most of the m-commerce research focuses on applications, devices, and security issues. We believe that some work is necessary in addressing the dependability challenges of the wireless infrastructure. In this paper, we present (a) the dependability issues of wireless infrastructure, (b) several architectures to improve the dependability of wireless networks, and (c) a simulation model and results on wireless dependability for m-commerce. The results show that a significant improvement is possible in wireless dependability for supporting m-commerce applications.  相似文献

Advances in wireless technology and availability of portable devices with networking capabilities have enabled ubiquitous Web accessibility. This has created the need to provide advance Internet services to mobile users without causing service failures due to connection migration or handoffs. However, scarcity of wireless resources restricts the provision of multimedia services in wireless networks. We address the issue of managing wireless resources to support Web-based multimedia document services including MPEG-4-based applications, in wireless networks with a high degree of user mobility. In particular, we formulate the resource management problem in wireless networks as an optimization problem with an objective function comprising different quality of presentation parameters.  相似文献
