This paper describes mobility management for the third‐generation mobile networks. We focus on the evolution from General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) to Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS). In this evolution, the radio access network UTRAN has been introduced, and radio‐related management is moved from the core network to UTRAN. We elaborate on how this architecture change affects the mobility management functionality, including the attach and detach procedures, location update, serving radio network controller relocation and intersystem change between GPRS and UMTS. The IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is an access-independent, IP based, service control architecture. Users’ authentication to the IMS takes place through the AKA (Authentication and Key Agreement) protocol, while Generic Bootstrapping Architecture (GBA) is used to authenticate users before accessing the multimedia services over HTTP. In this paper, we focus on the performance analysis of an IMS Service Authentication solution that we proposed and that employs the Identity Based Cryptography (IBC) to personalize each user access. We carry out the implementation of this solution on top of an emulated IMS architecture and evaluate its performance through different clients’ access scenarios. Performance results indicate that increase in the number of clients does not influence the average processing time and the average consumed resources of the GBA entities during the authentication. We also notice that the Bootstrapping Server Function (BSF) presents a bottleneck during the service authentication which helps in giving some guidelines for the GBA entities deployment. 相似文献

Quality of Service (QoS) has become a very important issue in networking, covering many performance aspects and numerous measures. The deployment of next generation wireless system includes 2.5G General Packet Radio Service (Gprs), which is the packet-switched extension of the Global System for Mobile communications (Gsm), and Third-Generation (3G) Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (Umts) to meet the needs of larger capacity and higher bit rates. AnUmts packet core network is an IP-based network. The Internet Engineering Task Force (Ietf) Forum developed several IP QoS related mechanisms available for IP transport networks. Multimedia messaging service (MMS) enables the transmission of messages with full content versatility between mobile devices and from applications to these devices, which can be used over the general packet radio service (GPRS)/universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) short message service (SMS) network. In the GPRS/UMTS SMS network, the serving GPRS support node (SGSN) stores the mobile-terminated message in a queue until it is successfully transferred to the mobile device or its maximum waiting time expires. If the mobile device moves from one SGSN area to another before the waiting time has expired, the queued message is forwarded to the new SGSN and is immediately removed from the waiting queue of the old SGSN. Taking the forwarding and the expiration effects of queued messages into account, the paper develops an analytical model to study the system performance of a heterogeneous GPRS/UMTS SMS network, in which the parameters (e.g., message arrival rate, SGSN area residence time, buffer size, etc.) of SGSNs can be varied. On the basis of the analytical model, an iterative method is proposed to determine the optimal buffer size so that the available bandwidth is fully utilized and the message loss probability is minimized. 相似文献
