Transport protocol design for supporting multimedia streaming in mobile ad hoc networks is challenging because of unique issues, including mobility-induced disconnection, reconnection, and high out-of-order delivery ratios; channel errors and network congestion. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of a transmission control protocol (TCP)-friendly transport protocol for ad hoc networks. Our key design novelty is to perform multimetric joint identification for packet and connection behaviors based on end-to-end measurements. Our NS-2 simulations show significant performance improvement over wired TCP friendly congestion control and TCP with explicit-link-failure-notification support in ad hoc networks.  相似文献

This paper studies the TCP performance with delayed ack in wireless networks (including ad hoc and WLANs) which use IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol as the underlying medium access control. Our analysis and simulations show that TCP throughput does not always benefit from an unrestricted delay policy. In fact, for a given topology and flow pattern, there exists an optimal delay window size at the receiver that produces best TCP throughput. If the window is set too small, the receiver generates too many acks and causes channel contention; on the other hand, if the window is set too high, the bursty transmission at the sender triggered by large cumulative acks will induce interference and packet losses, thus degrading the throughout. In wireless networks, packet losses are also related to the length of TCP path; when traveling through a longer path, a packet is more likely to suffer interference. Therefore, path length is an important factor to consider when choosing appropriate delay window sizes. In this paper, we first propose an adaptive delayed ack mechanism which is suitable for ad hoc networks, then we propose a more general adaptive delayed ack scheme for ad hoc and hybrid networks. The simulation results show that our schemes can effectively improve TCP throughput by up to 25% in static networks, and provide more significant gain in mobile networks. The proposed schemes are simple and easy to deploy. The real testbed experiments are also presented to verify our approaches. Furthermore, a simple and effective receiver-side probe and detection is proposed to improve friendliness between the standard TCP and our proposed TCP with adaptive delayed ack.  相似文献

A number of different authors have considered the problem of performance degradation of transmission control protocol (TCP) in wireless ad hoc networks. We herein show that pauses in packet transmission due to packet losses are the fundamental cause of performance degradation of TCP in wireless ad hoc networks. To minimize the duration of packet transmission pauses, we propose a fast retransmission scheme for improving TCP performance in consideration of the inter-operability of previously deployed TCPs in wireless ad hoc networks. We also propose an additional rate control scheme for TCPs to reduce the probability of packet contention. Using OPNET and NS2 simulations, we show that our proposed schemes can provide a much better performance than conventional TCPs.  相似文献

Most of the schemes that were proposed to improve the performance of transmission control protocol (TCP) over mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) are based on a feedback from the network, which can be expensive (require extra bandwidth) and unreliable. Moreover, most of these schemes consider only one cause of packet loss. They also resume operation based on the same stand-by parameters that might vary in the new route. Therefore, we propose two techniques for improving the performance of TCP over MANETs. The first one, called TCP with packet recycling (TCP-PR), allows the nodes to recycle the packets instead of dropping them after reaching the retransmission limit at the MAC layer. In the second technique, which is called TCP with adaptive delay window (TCP-ADW), the receiver delays sending TCP ACK for a certain time that is dynamically changed according to the congestion window and the trip time of the received packet. TCP-PR and TCP-ADW are simple, easy to implement, do not require network feedback, compatible with the standard TCP, and do not require distinguishing between the causes of packet loss. Our thorough simulations show that the integration of our two techniques improves the performance of TCP over MANETs.  相似文献

In ad hoc networks, both contention and congestion can severely affect the performance of TCP. In our work, we first show that the over-injection of conventional TCP window mechanism results in severe contentions, and medium contentions cause network congestion. Furthermore, introducing two metrics, channel utilization (CU) and contention ratio (CR), we characterize the network status. Then, based on these two metrics, we propose a new TCP transmission rate control mechanism based on Channel utilization and Contention ratio (TCPCC). In this mechanism, each node collects the information about the network busy status and determines the CU and CR accordingly. The CU and CR values fed back through ACK are ultimately determined by the bottleneck node along the flow. The TCP sender controls its transmission rate based on the feedback information. Simulation results show that the proposed TCPCC mechanism significantly outperforms the conventional TCP mechanism and the TCP contention control mechanism in terms of throughput and end-to-end delay.  相似文献

Existing works have approached the problem of reliable transport in ad hoc networks by proposing mechanisms to improve TCP's performance over such networks, In this paper, we show through detailed arguments and simulations that several of the design elements in TCP are fundamentally inappropriate for the unique characteristics of ad hoc networks. Given that ad hoc networks are typically stand-alone, we approach the problem of reliable transport from the perspective that it is justifiable to develop an entirely new transport protocol that is not a variant of TCP. Toward this end, we present a new reliable transport layer protocol for ad hoc networks called ATP (ad hoc transport protocol). We show through ns2-based simulations that ATP outperforms default TCP as well as TCP-ELFN and ATCP.  相似文献

Current TCP is not able to distinguish corruption losses from packet loss events. Hence, high transmission errors and varying inherent latency within a wireless network would cause seriously adverse effects to TCP performance. To improve TCP in IEEE 802.11 multi-hop ad hoc wireless networks, this study proposes an error recovery mechanism based on coordination of TCP and IEEE 802.11 MAC protocols. The simulation results confirm that the proposed error recovery approach could provide a more efficient solution for frequent transmission losses, and enable TCP to distinguish between congestion errors and transmission errors, and thus, to respond with proper remedial actions.  相似文献

TCP Vegas performance can be improved since its rate-based congestion control mechanism could proactively avoid possible congestion and packet losses in multi-hop ad hoc networks. Nevertheless, Vegas cannot make full advantage of available bandwidth to transmit packets since incorrect bandwidth estimates may occur due to frequent topology changes caused by node mobility. This paper proposes an improved TCP Vegas based on the grey prediction theory, named TCP-Gvegas, for multi-hop ad hoc networks, which has the capability of prediction and self-adaption, as well as three enhanced aspects in the phase of congestion avoidance. The lower layers’ parameters are considered in the throughput model to improve the accuracy of theoretical throughput. The prediction of future throughput based on grey prediction is used to promote the online control. The optimal exploration method based on Q-Learning and Round Trip Time quantizer are applied to search for the more reasonable changing size of congestion window. Besides, the convergence analysis of grey prediction by using the Lyapunov’s second method proves that a shorter input data length of prediction implies a faster convergence rate. The simulation results show that the TCP-Gvegas achieves a substantially higher throughput and lower delay than Vegas in multi-hop ad hoc networks.  相似文献

In multi-hop wireless networks, transmission control protocol (TCP) suffers from performance deterioration due to poor wireless channel characteristics. Earlier studies have shown that the small TCP acknowledgments consume as much wireless resources as the long TCP data packets. Moreover, generating an acknowledgment (ACK) for each incoming data packet reduces the performance of TCP. The main factor affecting TCP performance in multi-hop wireless networks is the contention and collision between ACK and data packets that share the same path. Thus, lowering the number of ACKs using the delayed acknowledgment option defined in IETF RFC 1122 will improve TCP performance. However, large cumulative ACKs will induce packet loss due to retransmission time-out at the sender side of TCP. Motivated by this understanding, we propose a new TCP receiver with an adaptive delayed ACK strategy to improve TCP performance in multi-hop wireless networks. Extensive simulations have been done to prove and evaluate our strategy over different topologies. The simulation results demonstrate that our strategy can improve TCP performance significantly.  相似文献

For reducing the loss of data packet due to network congestion and mobility, rate control algorithm is effective means for ensuring the fair allocation of network resource among communication flows and alleviating network congestion. The Transport Control Protocol (TCP) was originally designed for wire-line networks, where the links are assumed to be reliable and with fixed capacities. However, the performance of TCP becomes very poor when it is directly used in ad hoc networks. Some optimization-based congestion control schemes have been proposed to improve TCP performance in ad hoc networks, but the mobility of hosts and route change frequently are not considered for designing rate control algorithm. In this paper, we propose rate control algorithms in a more practical way by taking into account link congestion and node movement. Numerical results show that the rate control algorithms can approach the globally optimal value and show the effect of the node mobility on the algorithms.  相似文献

Transport connections set up in wireless ad hoc networks are plagued by problems such as high bit error rates, frequent route changes, and partitions. If we run the transmission control protocol (TCP) over such connections, the throughput of the connection is observed to be extremely poor because TCP treats lost or delayed acknowledgments as congestion. We present an approach where we implement a thin layer between Internet protocol and standard TCP that corrects these problems and maintains high end-to-end TCP throughput. We have implemented our protocol in FreeBSD, and we present results from extensive experimentation done in an ad hoc network. We present a formal specification of the selective acknowledgment (SACK) mechanism that is being proposed as a new standard option for TCP. The formal specification allows one to reason about the SACK protocol; thus, we are able to formally prove that the SACK mechanism does not violate the safety properties (reliable, at most once, and in order message delivery) of the acknowledgment (ACK) mechanism that is currently used with TCP. The new mechanism is being proposed to improve the performance of TCP when multiple packets are lost from one window of data. The proposed mechanism for implementing the SACK option for TCP is sufficiently complicated that it is not obvious that it is indeed safe, so we think it is important to formally verify its safety properties. In addition to safety, we are also able to show that SACK can improve the time it takes for the sender to recover from multiple packet losses. With the additional information available at a SACK sender, the round-trip time that a cumulative ACK sender waits before retransmitting each subsequent packet lost after the very first loss can be saved. We also show that SACK can improve performance even with window sizes as small as four packets and in situations where acknowledgment packets are lost  相似文献

In this letter, a new transport layer mechanism is proposed to improve the performance of transport control protocol (TCP) in mobile networks. The proposed mechanism is comprised of two parts: a loss classifier (LC) and a congestion window extrapolator (CWE). Based on LC, the cause of packet loss during roaming is determined. If the loss is considered to be caused by congestion in the wireline, the congestion window is halved; otherwise, the packet is considered to be lost in the last hop, the wireless portion, and the sender adjusts the size of the congestion window based on CWE. We conduct simulations to evaluate the performance of the proposed mechanism. The results show that our mechanism significantly improves TCP performance as compared with existing solutions for mobile networks.  相似文献

Transmission control protocol (TCP), a widely used transport protocol performs well over the traditional network which is constructed by purely wired links. As wireless access networks are growing rapidly, the wired/wireless mixed internetwork, a heterogeneous environment will get wide deployment in the next-generation ALL-IP wireless networks. TCP which detects the losses as congestion events could not suit the heterogeneous network in which the losses will be introduced by higher bit-error rates or handoffs. There exist some unsolved challenges for applying TCP over wireless links. End-to-end congestion control and fairness issues are two significant factors. To satisfy these two criteria, we propose a jitter-based scheme to adapt sending rates to the packet losses and jitter ratios. The experiment results show that our jitter-based TCP (JTCP) conducts good performance over the heterogeneous network.  相似文献

Most of the recent research on TCP over heterogeneous wireless networks has concentrated on differentiating between packet drops caused by congestion and link errors, to avoid significant throughput degradations due to the TCP sending window being frequently shut down, in response to packet losses caused not by congestion but by transmission errors over wireless links. However, TCP also exhibits inherent unfairness toward connections with long round-trip times or traversing multiple congested routers. This problem is aggravated by the difference of bit-error rates between wired and wireless links in heterogeneous wireless networks. In this paper, we apply the TCP Bandwidth Allocation (TBA) algorithm, which we have proposed previously, to improve TCP fairness over heterogeneous wireless networks with combined wireless and wireline links. To inform the sender when congestion occurs, we propose to apply Wireless Explicit Congestion Notification (WECN). By controlling the TCP window behavior with TBA and WECN, congestion control and error-loss recovery are effectively separated. Further enhancement is also incorporated to smooth traffic bursts. Simulation results show that not only can the combined TBA and WECN mechanism improve TCP fairness, but it can maintain good throughput performance in the presence of wireless losses as well. A salient feature of TBA is that its main functions are implemented in the access node, thus simplifying the sender-side implementation.  相似文献

In explicit TCP rate control, the receiver's advertised window size in acknowledgment (ACK) packets can be modified by intermediate network elements to reflect network congestion conditions. The TCP receiver's advertised window (i.e. the receive buffer of a TCP connection) limits the maximum window and consequently the throughput that can be achieved by the sender. Appropriate reduction of the advertised window can control the number of packets allowed to be sent from a TCP source. This paper evaluates the performance of a TCP rate control scheme in which the receiver's advertised window size in ACK packets are modified in a network node in order to match the generated load to the assigned bandwidth in the node. Using simulation and performance metrics such as the packet loss rates and the cumulative number of TCP timeouts, we examine the service improvement provided by the TCP rate control scheme to the users. When the stations in an IEEE 802.11 infrastructure basic service set employ Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), this exacerbates per‐flow unfair access problem. We propose a novel analytical model to approximately calculate the maximum per‐flow TCP congestion window limit that prevents packet losses at the access point buffer and therefore provides fair TCP access both in the downlink and uplink. The proposed analysis is unique in considering the effects of varying number of uplink and downlink TCP flows, differing round trip times among TCP connections and the use of delayed TCP acknowledgment (ACK) mechanism. Motivated by the findings of this theoretical analysis and simulations, we design a link layer access control block to be employed only at the access point in order to resolve the unfair access problem. The proposed link layer access control block uses congestion control and ACK filtering approach by prioritizing the access of TCP data packets of downlink flows over TCP ACK packets of uplink flows. Via simulations, we show that the proposed algorithm can provide both short‐term and long‐term fair accesses while improving channel utilization and access delay.
