The Grid Enterprise — Structuring the Agile Business of the Future

Information technology (IT) spending remains depressed as organisations look to exploit their existing systems, squeezing out the last drops of benefit to bolster their financial cases. However, at some point the law of diminishing returns will cut in as infrastructure gets older and the needs of business agility stretch the bounds of existing systems. As a result, companies will start to look for the next wave of technology that will help them both upgrade their capacity and improve their agility. Many analysts have identified grid computing and Web Services as the core technologies to support this wave, variously describing it as ‘organic IT’ and the ‘real-time enterprise’. However, there is a broader convergence of both these two technologies with the techniques of business process management that appears to offer even greater benefit. This paper examines the drivers of organisational agility and the corresponding demands on a Web Services-based infrastructure. It identifies the shortfall in current Web Services solutions and highlights how a service-oriented architecture can overcome them. It extends this architecture to incorporate both business process management and grid computing and concludes by deriving a future form for the truly agile enterprise. Cloud Computing: Concept, Model, and Key Technologies

Cloud computing is a new network computing paradigm based on IP architecture, and its potential lies in new ICT business applications. For the majority of operators and enterprises, the main task associated with cloud computing is next generation data center transformation. This will ensure cloud computing becomes more widespread among enterprises, institutions, organizations, and operators. Cloud computing not only provides traditional IT resource usage and application services, but also supports full resource usage and application services such as IT, communications, video, mobile, and Internet of Things using a converged network infrastructure. Key cloud computing technologies include unified fabric, unified virtualization, and unified computing system. The formation of an open industry alliance and promotion of open technology standards will be critical for the future development of cloud computing.

The impact of forensic computing on telecommunications

The increasing use of telecommunications, particularly the development of e-commerce, is steadily increasing the opportunities for crime in many guises, especially IT-related crime. In response, there is an urgent new demand for forensic computing, that is, the examination of IT equipment and systems in order to obtain information for criminal or civil investigations. This field is not yet well developed, but its needs will in the future begin to influence telecommunications as investigations are extended to include the use of the communications infrastructures and services. IT security technologies alone are not sufficient to deal with this. The telecommunications industry, its customers, and regulators will face difficult challenges in the provision and use of systems that will be safe, reliable, and auditable. These challenges will need solutions addressing technical, legal, regulatory, and social issues and will not be easily resolved. This article summarizes the state of forensic computing, its likely future development, and its impact on telecommunications, and identifies several research and development issues.     

A risk comparison framework for evaluating the impact of telecom cloudification in organizational risk profile

Cloud computing has provided new dimensions and opportunities to telecom providers to enhance their ability in creating new revenue streams, reduce operational costs and increase customer satisfaction. In recent years, the progression of evolving cloud computing systems is huge. Conversely, it also encountered a lot of new challenges to the institutions utilizing cloud systems. It is critical to evaluate the change in organizational risk profile before deciding the level of cloud adoption. The conventional risk assessment framework of telecom providers may be unsuitable for cloud computing owing to the difficulties in the configuration. This paper aims to propose a system to quantify the influences of cloud adoption in telecom risk profile. This study also provides a comparison of overall risk profile change between clouds enabled infrastructure, traditional on-premises information technology solutions, and a combination of both in the telecom sector. The result encourages the selective adoption of the hybrid cloud model which demonstrated a relatively low organizational risk score. This work contributes to cloud computing business research by providing a holistic risk comparison model which reflects the distinctiveness of telecom service provider’s assets and capabilities.
