Results from a number of studies have shown that individuals with profound developmental disabilities often show differential approach behavior to stimuli presented in a variety of formats, and that such behavior is a reasonably good predictor of reinforcement effects when these "preferred" stimuli are used subsequently in a contingent arrangement. Recent data suggest that reinforcement effects may be enhanced further by allowing individuals to select, just prior to training sessions, which (of several) preferred stimuli would be used as reinforcers, but whether this method is superior to one based on selection by a teacher or therapist has not been adequately addressed. We compared the effects of these two methods of reinforcer selection on rates of responding on a free-operant task, using stimuli previously identified as potential reinforcers. Results obtained with 4 subjects indicated little or no difference in reinforcement effects when stimuli were selected by subjects rather than experimenters. Implications of these results with respect to choice and its relation to reinforcement are discussed.  相似文献

When pigeons acquire a simple simultaneous discrimination, some of the value acquired by the S+ transfers to the S–. The mechanism underlying this transfer of value was examined in three experiments. In Experiment 1, pigeons trained on two simultaneous discriminations (A?+?B– and C?+?D–) showed a preference for B over D. This preference was reduced, however, following the devaluation of A. In Experiment 2, when after the same original training, value was given to D, the pigeons' preference for C did not significantly increase. In Experiment 3, when both discriminations involved partial reinforcement (S±), A?+?C– training resulted in a preference for B over D, whereas B?+?D– training resulted in a preference for A over C. Three experiments were designed to investigate some effects of low-level stimulation of the amygdaloid complex (AMYG) and the mesencephalic reticular formation (MRF). Experiment 1 used a tilt box to test for motivational and/or reinforcement effects and failed to demonstrate these effects with stimulation of either structure. Experiment 2 used a one-trial fear-conditioning task and revealed that stimulation of the AMYG disrupted retention when given immediately after training or, under some conditions, 4 days after training. In the same task, Experiment 3 showed that stimulation of the MRF enhanced retention when given immediately after training or, under some conditions, 4 days after training. These data indicate that under these conditions, modification of retention by low-level stimulation of specific brain structures is independent of the age of the memory. Some implications of this result are discussed.  相似文献

In three experiments, rats were exposed to a flavor preference procedure in which flavor A was paired with the reinforcer and flavor B presented alone in Context 1, while in Context 2 flavor A was presented alone and flavor B with the reinforcer. With fructose as the reinforcer both two- and one-bottle training procedures produced a context-dependent preference (Experiments 1 and 2). With maltodextrin as the reinforcer two-bottle training produced a context-dependent preference (Experiment 1). Following one-bottle training with maltodextrin reinforcement rats demonstrated a context-dependent preference when the conditioned stimulus (CS)- was presented with a dilute solution of the reinforcer during training (Experiment 3B) but not when the CS- was presented alone (Experiments 2 and 3A). The pattern of results with maltodextrin reinforcement suggests that there was competition between the cue flavors and the taste of the maltodextrin as predictors of the postingestive consequences of the maltodextrin reinforcer. The fact that rats were able to display context-dependent flavor preferences is consistent with the idea that learned flavor preferences rely on the sort of cue-consequence associations that underpin other forms of conditioning which produce accurate performance on biconditional tasks. The differences between fructose- and maltodextrin-based preferences are discussed in terms of configural and elemental learning processes. In the current investigation, a modification was made to the preference assessment described by Pace, Ivancic, Edwards, Iwata, and Page (1985) to predict the effects of stimuli when used in a differential-reinforcement-of-other-behavior (DRO) schedule for 2 clients with severe self-injurious behavior (SIB) and profound mental retardation. Based on the results of the preference assessment, three types of stimuli were identified: (a) high-preference stimuli associated with high rates of SIB (HP/HS), (b) high-preference stimuli associated with relatively lower rates of SIB (HP/LS), and (c)low-preference stimuli associated with low rates of SIB (LP/LS). Consistent with the results of the preference assessment, the DRO schedule with HP/HS stimuli resulted in increased SIB, and the DRO schedule with LP/LS stimuli resulted in no change in SIB when used in a DRO schedule. Thus, the stimulus preference assessment may be useful clinically in some situations for predicting both the beneficial and the negative side effects of stimuli in DRO procedures.  相似文献

Describes the advantages of the social skills training (SST) model and the utility of the concept of bicultural competence as more adequately meeting mental health needs of Native Americans than present government practices. An illustration of the process of culturally adapting SST is provided by outlining an assertion training program developed with and for Native Americans. The specifics were refined over 1 yr as a result of interactions with 30 tribal groups and agencies. Situations were identified in which Native Americans wished they had behaved differently (e.g., challenging employers who stereotyped Native Americans). The Native American traditions of role modeling, apprenticeship training, and group consensus parallel the SST principles of instruction, modeling, behavior rehearsal, reinforcement, feedback, skill improvement, and generalization to the natural environment. The key instructional element of this assertion program stressed the situation-specific nature of assertiveness. Discrimination skills in bicultural rights, language styles, social expectations, and social reinforcers were essential in training for bicultural competence. A literature review was conducted to provide a synthesis of 18 years of research on preference assessment with individuals who have severe disabilities (e.g., severe mental retardation, autism, multiple disabilities). Through this synthesis, several procedural variables were identified that may influence the outcome of preference assessment, including context, assessment stimuli, selection response, and format. Recommendations were given for designing preference assessment, and questions were raised for future research.  相似文献

In Experiment 1, delayed reward generated low response rates relative to immediate reward delivered with the same frequency. Lister rats exposed to delayed reward subsequently responded at a higher rate in extinction if they received nonreinforced exposure to the conditioned context after instrumental training and prior to test, compared with animals that received home cage exposure. In Experiment 2, a signaled delay of reinforcement resulted in higher rates than an unsignaled delay. Nonreinforced exposure to the conditioning context elevated response rate for subjects in the unsignaled condition relative to a home cage group, but had no effect on response rates for subjects that had received the signaled delay. In Experiment 3, following an unsignaled reinforcement delay, groups receiving either no event or signaled food in the context responded faster in extinction than groups receiving no context exposure or unsignaled food. Two studies investigated the effects of delayed visual feedback on manual tracking. In Experiment 1, individuals practiced with visual feedback provided either immediately (0 delay) or with a 333-ms delay. During acquisition, the 0 delay group performed with less error than the 333-ms delay group. A retention test with 0 delay feedback was performed with the least error by the 0 delay group. A transfer test using a different 0 delay tracking pattern, was performed with the least error by the 333-ms delay group. In Experiment 2, individuals practiced at six different delays. Error increased as training feedback delay increased. For retention there were no differences between the delay groups during the 0 delay retention. At a 417-ms retention, test error decreased as training feedback delay increased. Results indicate that error during acquisition does not necessarily impair learning and that feedback delays can be beneficial for learning.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study are: (1) to assess the feasibility and usefulness of using the Needs Schedule on older homeless individuals; (2) to measure the needs of the elderly homeless individual for mental health services and whether these needs could be met by the same services that cater for younger individuals. DESIGN AND SETTING: This article analyses the needs of a subsample of 37 elderly residents in four inner London hostels for homeless people. Their needs were compared with those of 64 younger residents within the same hostels. RESULTS: The data related to demographic characteristics and health problems showed that the elderly homeless were physically frail and socially isolated. This group demonstrated more need for physical health services than the younger sample. However, the needs assessment method used in this study failed to show significant differences between the needs of these elderly and those of the younger residents. CONCLUSIONS: The article discusses ways of improving the assessment of needs for services in the elderly homeless and the way forward in meeting the needs of this disadvantaged group.  相似文献

Although support groups for HIV-seropositive persons are a potential source of emotional support and information, there has been little assessment of such groups as to their role in changing risk behaviour for transmission. The present study combines observations from over 52 group sessions with baseline and follow-up interview data to assess changes in sex and drug behaviour among seropositive drug users participating in an ongoing group for African Americans. The sample of 100 adults was recruited from drug treatment centres and from the community in Atlanta, Georgia. At the 6-month interview, frequency of group attendance was associated mainly with healthier drug behaviour, the topic most frequently discussed by members. Findings suggest that training for support group facilitators needs to target two areas for technology transfer: successful strategies for reducing both high-risk sex and drug behaviour and methods for introducing these behavioural change tools into a setting designed for socio-emotional support. We conclude that community support groups are an untapped opportunity for low-cost prevention services.  相似文献

Research in psychoneuroimmunology suggests that immunosuppression associated with perceived stress may contribute to disease progression in persons with HIV infection. While stress management interventions may enhance immune function, few alternative approaches have yet been tested. This randomized clinical trial was conducted to test effects of three 10-week stress management approaches--cognitive-behavioral relaxation training (RLXN), focused tai chi training (TCHI), and spiritual growth groups (SPRT)--in comparison to a wait-listed control group (CTRL) among 252 individuals with HIV infection. Using repeated measures mixed modeling, the authors found that in comparison to the CTRL group, (a) both the RLXN and TCHI groups used less emotion-focused coping, and (b) all treatment groups had augmented lymphocyte proliferative function. Despite modest effects of the interventions on psychosocial functioning, robust findings of improved immune function have important clinical implications, particularly for persons with immune-mediated illnesses. This pilot study focused on the effects of assertion training on 14 physically disabled undergraduates' acceptance of disability. A pretest–posttest control group design was utilized. Ss were randomly assigned to either a treatment group or a no-treatment control group. The hypotheses analyzed were that Ss given assertion training would show increases in Acceptance of Disability Scale scores, self-concept/esteem scores (Rathus Assertiveness Scale), and social interaction skills scores (Behavioral Observation Scale) when compared with individuals who did not experience assertion training. Significant results were obtained for all hypotheses indicating that the groups differed in acceptance of disability, self-concept, and social interaction. The study suggests that assertion training may be effective for increasing acceptance of disability in physically disabled students. Although patient attrition might be a serious threat to the validity of treatment-outcome studies on temporomandibular disorders (TMD), studies on TMD patient attrition are scarce. Of the 1405 consecutive TMD patients examined in a recent 10-year period, 367 (26.1%) drop-out patients or patients identified with a control group were sampled. A mailed questionnaire failed to reach 41 patients, and 203 (62.3%) were returned. The questionnaire elicited information on reasons for dropping out, changes in symptoms, treatment received in other clinics after dropping out, present treatment needs, and current signs and symptoms. Dropouts were divided into two groups: (1) those who failed to show up for their first scheduled appointment after the clinical examination; (2) those who failed to complete treatment. A group of patients who were judged by the examiner not to need treatment were included as a control group. The main reasons for dropping out were environmental obstacles, perceived improvement of the disease, and dissatisfaction with services. Only 21.7% considered themselves to be in need of treatment, and only 10.3% had visited other clinics after dropping out. Only 8.9% complained of the continued aggravation of symptoms, whereas 57.6% reported improvement. In addition, pain, dysfunction, and daily activity limitation tended to improve with time, although temporomandibular joint noise tended to persist. These results suggest that TMD signs and symptoms tend to decrease in patients after dropping out, and that the natural fluctuation of TMD signs and symptoms should be taken into consideration when treating TMD.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to test the idea that individuals may fail strategically in order to lower the expectations that others hold for their performances. In a pilot study, participants reported that, when lacking confidence, they would be particularly uncomfortable and anxious with high expectations and would attempt to lower them strategically. In Experiment 1, socially anxious and nonanxious participants were led to believe that an interviewer's high or low expectations were due to a prodigious amount of effort or to very little effort. Socially anxious individuals tended to fail strategically when confronted with high as opposed to low expectations presumably based on a prodigious amount of previous effort. In Experiment 2, individuals high or low in social anxiety were led to believe that an interviewer held either high or low expectations for them. High-anxiety participants, led to believe their initial performance would affect high expections, showed much poorer initial performance relative to all other groups. These findings show that individuals who are particularly doubtful about their ability to perform up to par will sometimes fail strategically at the outset of social interaction as a means to create lower and safer standards. 39 high school students designated by their teachers as at risk for academic problems received 10 50-min weekly behavioral treatment sessions that included self monitoring, study skill training, anxiety reducing procedures, and assertiveness training. The academic performance of these Ss was compared at 4 times during the year to that of 30 students at risk who agreed to participate in treatment but were placed on a waiting list (motivated controls), 43 at-risk students who refused to participate (unmotivated controls), and 43 students not at academic risk. Ss in the intervention group significantly improved their performance from the 1st to the 4th assessment, and both the intervention and not-at-risk groups performed significantly better than did the untreated, nonmotivated control group. Ss in the latter group failed to improve their grades, suggesting that without direct and systematic help, students with potential school problems do not find ways of solving their difficulties by themselves. The effectiveness of odor cues to support nutrient-conditioned flavor preferences in rats was studied. When the rats drank fluid, the CS+ odor was paired with intragastric (IG) infusions of Polycose, and the CS– odor with IG water. In Experiment 1, rats trained with almond and anise odors presented with plain drinking water failed to acquire a CS+ odor preference. In contrast, rats in Experiment 2 formed a strong aversion to anise (or almond) paired with lithium chloride, which indicated that the odors were distinguishable to the rats. Experiment 3 showed that providing unique tastes (bitter or sour) in combination with the odors during training potentiated odor conditioning. The rats displayed a strong preference for the odor?+?taste CS+ and for the odor component alone. Experiment 4 showed that with another pair of odors (peppermint and vanilla), CS+ preferences could be conditioned in the absence of taste cues during training. As the number of people in need of help increases, the degree of compassion people feel for them ironically tends to decrease. This phenomenon is termed the collapse of compassion. Some researchers have suggested that this effect happens because emotions are not triggered by aggregates. We provide evidence for an alternative account. People expect the needs of large groups to be potentially overwhelming, and, as a result, they engage in emotion regulation to prevent themselves from experiencing overwhelming levels of emotion. Because groups are more likely than individuals to elicit emotion regulation, people feel less for groups than for individuals. In Experiment 1, participants displayed the collapse of compassion only when they expected to be asked to donate money to the victims. This suggests that the effect is motivated by self-interest. Experiment 2 showed that the collapse of compassion emerged only for people who were skilled at emotion regulation. In Experiment 3, we manipulated emotion regulation. Participants who were told to down-regulate their emotions showed the collapse of compassion, but participants who were told to experience their emotions did not. We examined the time course of these effects using a dynamic rating to measure affective responses in real time. The time course data suggested that participants regulate emotion toward groups proactively, by preventing themselves from ever experiencing as much emotion toward groups as toward individuals. Partial reinforcement is known to increase resistance to extinction (Rn) relative to training with continuous reinforcement. This phenomenon, referred to as the partial reinforcement extinction effect, is one of the most robust in learning and conditioning studies. Experiment 1 investigated manipulations known to affect the partial reinforcement extinction effect and determined their possible relevance for drug use patterns. Male rats received intravenous cocaine self-administration training under partial reinforcement (FR-10) training or continuous reinforcement (FR-1) conditions with either a low (0.25 mg/kg infusion) or a high cocaine dose (1.00 mg/kg infusion). Animals were placed on an extinction (recurrent nonreward) schedule for 10 days (1-hr sessions) prior to being tested for cue-induced reinstatement (single 2-hr session). Experiment 2 involved acquisition of cocaine self-administration under FR-1 conditions of short training (15 days) or extended training (30 days) with a low dose (0.25 mg/kg infusion) or a medium dose (0.50 mg/kg infusion) of cocaine reward prior to extinction or reinstatement. Experiment 1 showed that rats trained with FR-10-high dose outcomes exhibited greater Rn than the remaining groups. Additionally, FR-10-high dose and FR-10-low dose rats were more likely to return to active drug seeking during the reinstatement test. In Experiment 2, rats trained under FR-1-medium dose conditions were more persistent during extinction following short acquisition training than comparable rats experiencing extended acquisition training. The reinstatement test was conducted following extinction, in which it was observed that overtraining under FR-1-medium dose reward schedules resulted in a decrease in the tendency to return to active drug seeking.
