Evolutionary Design of Steel Structures in Tall Buildings   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This paper presents results of a study on evolutionary computation in the design of the steel structural systems of tall buildings. It describes results of extensive research on both short-term (up to a few hundred generations) and long-term evolutionary design processes (at least a few thousand generations). The experiments were conducted with Inventor 2001, an evolutionary design support tool developed at George Mason University, for generating conceptual and detailed designs of steel structural systems in tall buildings. First, the paper discusses conceptual design of steel structural systems in tall buildings and briefly introduces Inventor 2001 as well as its design representation and evolutionary computation characteristics. Next, it provides the results obtained from systematic parametric design experiments conducted with Inventor 2001. The objective of these experiments was to qualitatively and quantitatively investigate evolution of steel structural systems of tall buildings during a multistage evolutionary design process as well as the influence of various evolutionary computation parameters. Mutation and crossover rates, population size, the length of the evolutionary processes, and the importance of a symmetry requirement have been analyzed and results produced. Emergence of structural shaping patterns has been also studied and several interesting patterns found in the evolutionary design process. Finally, research conclusions are presented as well as recommendations for further research and development of evolutionary design support tools.  相似文献

Modern laboratory design and construction is becoming increasingly complex with advancements in mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and specialty system technologies. Laboratory projects often have critical schedules and rigorous maintenance and operations requirements. The use of interstitial spaces that create additional floors for mechanical systems is a design strategy that can facilitate both the construction and operation of laboratories. By providing additional space and easier access to mechanical systems, interstitial designs facilitate maintenance and reconfiguration of laboratories, thus reducing life cycle costs. Despite these and other advantages, the use of interstitial space is often eliminated as a laboratory design option due to perceptions of high first costs. This paper presents an analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of interstitial space design as an alternative to traditional plenum construction. The opinions of experienced operators, designers and builders of interstitial building spaces are presented. Survey results of design and construction professionals are presented illustrating current perceptions (and misconceptions) of interstitial spaces as a design alternative for laboratories. Finally, a detailed interdisciplinary case study redesign is used to illustrate the comprehensive effects of introducing an interstitial space design in an actual modern laboratory in which a 1.6-year payback was achieved on the investment in an interstitial design alternative. The research concludes increased first costs can potentially be offset by savings in construction time, and that valuable savings in maintenance and operation costs help to justify the use of interstitial space design solutions.  相似文献

The integration of modeling and simulation tools with robust and efficient methods of optimal design offers a rational approach to explore new concepts and designs. However, a widespread adaptation of these tools in the industry design environment will require that they incorporate a systematic analysis of uncertainty in all aspects of the design process. A lack of confidence in designs generated in a simulation-based approach is the result of uncertainties in the predictive capabilities of physics-based models used in the simulations, and poor representation of uncertainties and their propagation in a coupled systems engineering design problem. A data- and knowledge-lean environment, typical of a design process involving novel concepts, further exacerbates the situation; design engineers often make gross assumptions about distributional information of random variables and parameters, thereby adding to the uncertainty associated with the design results. The paper focuses on numerical and analytical tools by which to model uncertainty and risk in a simulation-based design environment, including cases where the uncertainty does not conform to standard probabilistic distributions. A specific focus of the modeling effort is an approach to establish confidence intervals for response predictions available from analytical and numerical models, as well as surrogate approximations used in the design process. Innovative adaptations of formal optimization methods in a nondeterministic design setting are discussed, including design problem formulations that examine the nondeterministic design problem in a multicriteria optimization framework. Simple design problems are used to illustrate the concepts and to underscore the deficiencies in a purely deterministic approach to the design problem.  相似文献

The timely execution of a construction project is very important to the owner, who makes plans and commitments on the basis of the project’s anticipated completion date. Failure of design professionals to consider how a builder will implement the design can result in scheduling problems, delays, and disputes during the construction process. Constructability of design is a subjective scale that depends basically on a number of interdependent project-related factors. Many design firms have a formal (explicit) constructability program that is launched as early as the conceptual planning stage of the project. This research examines design professionals’ efforts to pursue constructability and provides recommendations for performing constructability reviews in an efficient and effective manner.  相似文献

选矿厂设计过程涉及大量数据计算、图形绘制以及设计规范和设计经验的应用,计算机辅助设计的应用无疑能显著提高设计效率和质量。通过对选矿厂计算机辅助设计研究现状进行总结和分析,指出存在的问题和不足,即设计过程模块化、设计规范和经验处理不成熟、设备配置自主化和可视化程度低以及沉浸感缺乏等。计算机虚拟现实技术(VR)的出现,为解决这些问题和不足提供了新的技术途径,将VR技术应用于选矿厂设计中,可有效提升设计过程的自主化、可视化、沉浸感以及人机交互性与设计员的想象创造力,是未来选矿厂计算机辅助设计的重要发展方向。  相似文献
