Presents views on the prevention of mental disorders, with a focus on the reports entitled Reducing Risks for Mental Disorders: Frontiers for Preventive Intervention Research (P. J. Mrazek and R. J. Haggerty, 1994) and The Prevention of Mental Disorders: A National Research Agenda (NIMH Prevention Research Steering Committee, 1994), prepared by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and the National Institute of Mental Health, respectively. Congress must work closely with NIMH to ensure that recommendations made by the IOM to advance the field of prevention of mental disorders are implemented. Also, the mental health community will need to be proactive with Congress to make a difference in critical decisions about financing for the treatment and prevention of mental disorders. Comments on the original article, "Theoretical Insularity and the Crisis of Psychoanalysis," by Frank Summers (see record 2008-09085-001). In that article, on p. 416, the following statement is made: "Sometime in the 1970s, Kohut asked George Pollock, then the Director of the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis, for a self psychology curriculum to be included in the training program. When Pollock refused, Kohut considered breaking away and forming his own institute. Although the founder of self psychology decided to stay at the Chicago Institute, Pollock never forgave him, and the bitterness and enmity between the ego and self psychologists at that institute is still evident." Here, the current author--a friend and colleague of Kohut's--maintains that this statement is untrue. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Memorializes Arthur T. Jersild, who described development in terms of changes in the hidden phenomena of thoughts, feelings, and the self. At Teachers College, Columbia University, his research in adolescent and child development was an integral part of the activities of the Child Development Institute and its successor, the Horace Mann-Lincoln Institute. Jersild did research on developmental aspects of self-awareness and what schools might do to promote children's knowledge of self and their insight into the feelings and motivations of self and others. Jersild served as editor of the Child Development Monographs and was a fellow and president of the Division of Childhood and Adolescence (now the Division of Developmental Psychology) of the American Psychological Association. Introduction.
This article introduces this special issue of Health Psychology. Its purpose is to summarize recent findings on the influence of race on autonomic nervous system reactivity. Many but not all of the studies in this special issue were funded by a National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute initiative. The studies reported herein, as well as those published recently in other journals (for a review, see Anderson 1989), represent perhaps the first generation of studies that have explored the reactivity model in Blacks. As such, they provide an empirical foundation on which future studies may build. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Argues against the suggestion by I. Iscoe (see record 1983-06391-001) that the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is primarily directed away from approaches that focus on prevention. Prevention is a high-priority area at NIMH; NIMH initiated the consultation and education activities in community mental health centers. This obituary highlights the life achievements of Ruth C. Cohn who was a psychotherapist, educator, and poet. She was born August 27, 1912, in Berlin, Germany, and died on January 30, 2010, in Dusseldorf, Germany. In the mid-1950s, Ruth began developing her creative group method called theme centered interaction (TCI). In 1966, along with her friend and colleague Norman Lieberman, she created the Workshop Institute for Living-Learning (WILL) for those interested in group leadership. She founded WILL–Europe in 1972. Ruth leaves behind a well-established organization called the Ruth Cohn Institute for TCI International, with headquarters in Germany. Her life and work have influenced the lives and work of many others on several continents, though most of her publications are in German. This paper represents an initial attempt to spell out some of the areas which will be given major emphasis by the Behavioral Science Program of the Growth and Development Program, National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). Although the Institute feels that these areas are among the most important ones relating to its current program interests, these suggestions are to be regarded as permissive and not controlling. The Institute will be constantly alert to, and willing to support a number of, high-risk projects in which the probabilities of payoff are not great, but in which payoff, if it does occur, would make an exciting, important, and meaningful contribution to the understanding of human growth and development. The paper highlights the areas that will be of primary interest to the program which include: 1)the biological bases and mechanisms of behavior; 2) cognition, learning, perception and environmental mastery; 3) social growth and cultural contexts and; 4) personality development. The author also discusses the importance of linkages. It is important to remain alert to innovations in concept, in method, and in areas of investigation, which will lead to fruitful new approaches to the understanding of human growth and development. Reviews the book, Sex Roles: Origins, Influences, and Implications for Women by Cannie Stark-Adamec (Ed.) (1980). This book contains the proceedings of the first IGWAP (Interest Group on Women and Psychology) Institute on women which was held in conjunction with the 1978 CPA meetings in Ottawa. The book begins with an introduction by the editor in which she discusses the male bias in traditional psychological research, the purpose and history of IGWAP, the papers included in this volume, and some studies of the effects of language on the way people think about sex roles. The Introduction is followed by the invited address given at the Institute by Dr. Sandra Pyke, "Androgyny: A Dead End or a Promise." The rest of the book consists of 14 papers which were submitted in response to a call for papers and presented at the Institute. Since the papers included here were received in response to a call for papers (with the exception of the introduction and the invited address on androgyny), the topics covered are not comprehensive nor systematic enough to make the book useful as a textbook. There are simply too many holes and too little information tying the specific findings together. Although not useful as a textbook, this book has value both as a reference book and as a historical document of the research Canadian psychologists were doing from a women's perspective in the mid 1970's. Using data from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (Research Triangle Institute, 2002), this study examined the impact of corporal punishment (CP) on children's behavior problems. Longitudinal analyses were specified that controlled for covarying contextual and parenting variables and that partialed child effects. The results indicate that parental CP uniquely contributes to negative behavioral adjustment in children at both 36 months and at 1st grade, with the effects at the earlier age more pronounced in children with difficult temperaments. Parents and mental health professionals who work to modify children's negative behavior should be aware of the unique impact that CP likely plays in triggering and maintaining children's behavior problems. Broad-based family policies that reduce the use of this parenting behavior would potentially increase children's mental health and decrease the incidence of children's behavior problems. The new prevention science put forward by the National Institute of Mental Health and by the Institute of Medicine advocates strict experimental interventions with controls to reduce risks for psychiatric disorders. Articles by R. F. Mu?oz et al (see record 84-09322), K. Heller (see record 84-09313), and D. Reiss and R. H. Price (see record 84-09329) support, elaborate, and discuss this agenda. Issues that seem controversial include (a) the use of risk reduction of psychiatric disorders as the criteria for acceptable research, (b) rejection of studies of competence promotion as not aimed at specific disorders, and (c) rejection of prevention studies, done before the counterrevolution that occurred in 1980 and thereafter, that advocated social and political change aimed at achieving social equality for disadvantaged groups. Arguments against the restricted new approach are presented. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

The Visiting Psychologist Program, sponsored by the APA and supported by the National Institute of Mental Health, has two major goals: (a) to provide information on recent developments in the field to psychologists in service settings, and (b) to provide opportunities to visit and learn about field centers for psychologists with significant training, service, and research responsibilities. The specific goals of the program are to disseminate up-to-date knowledge of recent research findings and to demonstrate innovations in psychological procedures and techniques. This program is discussed in further detail in this article. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献
