This paper extends the design philosophy for piled rafts by exploring the factors that control the design of a published case history where the piled raft was instrumented. The case history studied differs from most published case histories in that concentrated column loads, rather than average “spread” loads, were considered in the foundation design. An extensive series of backanalyses was initially carried out with this case history, in order to calibrate the numerical program adopted herein. These analyses were followed by a parametric analysis for the evaluation of different design alternatives. These alternatives adopted distinctive pile characteristics (number, location, and length), which were varied for different raft thicknesses, yielding 26 different cases for cross comparison and comparison with the “reference” case history. Each of the solutions was also assessed in terms of relative costs against the reference case, allowing the establishment of conclusions of practical interest for those involved in the design of piled raft structures.  相似文献

Contribution to Piled Raft Foundation Design   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Raft foundations enhanced with deep foundation elements (typically piles), simply known as piled rafts, were examined to develop a more integrated, displacement-based, design methodology. Illustrative piled rafts were analyzed using simplified linear elastic and nonlinear plane strain finite element models. The effects of raft and pile group system geometries and pile group compression capacity were evaluated on the “average” and differential displacements, raft bending moments, and pile butt load ratio of the piled rafts. The results were synthesized into an updated, displacement-based, design methodology for piled rafts.  相似文献

The conventional design of a piled foundation is based on a bearing capacity approach, and neglects the contribution of the raft. As a consequence, piled foundations are usually designed by overconservative criteria. With respect to the conventional approach, a more rational and economical solution could be obtained by accounting for the contribution of the raft toward the overall bearing capacity, but this potential is not exploited due to the lack of theoretical and experimental research on the behavior of piled rafts at failure. Based on both experimental evidence and three-dimensional finite element analyses, a simple criterion is proposed to evaluate the ultimate vertical load of a piled raft as a function of its component capacities, which can be simply evaluated by the conventional bearing capacity theories. The results presented in the paper thus provide a guide to assess the safety factor of a vertically loaded piled raft.  相似文献

Piled raft foundations are often used when the supporting soil has adequate bearing capacity but the raft settlements exceed allowable values. In traditional practice, long piles with high load capacity are usually used that may lead to two structural problems: the structural collapse of the pile and large strains mobilized in the raft leading to an uneconomic design. This paper presents an experimental study of the effectiveness of using short piles either connected or unconnected to the raft (instead of long piles) on the behavior of an eccentrically loaded raft. The load configuration was designed to simulate rafts under vertical loads and overturning moment. Several arrangements of piles with different lengths and numbers along with the effect of the relative density of the soil and the load eccentricity were studied. Test results indicate that the inclusion of short piles adjacent to the raft edges not only significantly improves the raft bearing pressures but also leads to a reduction in raft settlements and tilts leading to an economical design of the raft. However, the efficiency of the short piles-raft system is dependent on the load eccentricity ratio and pile arrangement. Also, connecting short piles to the raft gives greater improvement in the raft behavior than unconnected piles. Based on test results, the effects of different parameters are presented and discussed.  相似文献

This article presents a new method of analysis of piled raft foundations in contact with the soil surface. The soil is divided into multiple horizontal layers depending on the accuracy of solution required and each layer may have different material properties. The raft is modeled as a thin plate and the piles as elastic beams. Finite layer theory is employed to analyze the layered soil while finite element theory is used to analyze the raft and piles. The piled raft can be subjected to both loads and moments in any direction. Comparisons show that the results from the present method agree closely with those from the finite element method. A parametric study for piled raft foundations subjected to either vertical or horizontal loading is also presented.  相似文献

Analysis and Performance of Piled Rafts Designed Using Innovative Criteria   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
In this paper the main criteria adopted for the design and some aspects of the observed behavior of the piled foundations of a cluster of circular steel tanks are reported. They were designed to store sodium hydroxide, a toxic liquid with a unit weight of 15.1?kN/m3. Shallow foundations would have been safe against a bearing capacity failure, while the predicted settlement was beyond the allowed limit. Accordingly piles were designed to reduce the settlement and improve the overall performance of the foundations. While conventional capacity based design approach led to a total of 160 piles to support the five tanks the settlement based design approach led to a total of 65 piles achieving significant savings on the cost of the project. The settlements of four out of the five tanks were measured and for two out of the five tanks the load sharing among the raft and the piles was also observed. Both the analyses carried out at the design stage and the back-analyses of the observed behavior were based on the interaction factors method as implemented in the computer code NAPRA [Russo (1998), Int. J. Numer. Anal. Methods Geomech., 22(6), 477–493].  相似文献

Piles in a pile raft are sometimes considered as settlement reducers, not load-carrying members. In design, one often tries to minimize the number of piles. This often results in a high axial stress in the piles that may deter their use due to the limits on pile stress in practice. An alternative is to consider the pile as reinforcement in the base soil, and not as a structural member. Serving as a soil stiffener, the pile can tolerate a lower safety margin against structural failure without violating building codes. Previous numerical studies on the use of disconnected piles as settlement reducers have shown the effectiveness of such piles. This study aims to verify experimentally the effectiveness of such piles through load tests of model rafts resting on pile-reinforced sand. By varying factors such as raft stiffness, pile length, pile arrangement, and pile number, results of the investigation indicate that structurally disconnected piles are effective in reducing the settlement and bending moments in the model rafts.  相似文献

A variational approach for the analysis of piled raft foundations is presented. The raft and piles are both analyzed by the use of the principle of minimum potential energy. By representing the deformation of the piles and raft using finite series, the method is very efficient for the analysis of a piled raft with a large number of piles. Comparisons with other numerical methods and field measurements have shown reasonable agreement.  相似文献

Pile groups are frequently designed with equal or similar pile lengths. However, the significant interaction effects among equal-length piles imply that this may not be the optimized configuration. This paper presents the optimization analyses of piled rafts and freestanding pile groups, where pile lengths are varied across the group to optimize the overall foundation performance. The results of the analyses are applicable in cases where the piles derive a majority of the capacity from the frictional resistance. It is demonstrated that, with the same amount of total pile material, an optimized pile length configuration can both increase the overall stiffness of the foundation and reduce the differential settlements that may cause distortion and cracking of the superstructure. The benefits of the optimization can be translated to economic and environmental savings as less material is required to attain the required level of foundation performances. The reliability of the optimization benefits in relation to construction-induced variability is also discussed.  相似文献

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) mandated the use of the load and resistance factor design (LRFD) approach in the U.S. for all new bridges initiated after September 2007. This paper presents the bridge deep foundation practices established through a nationwide survey of more than 30 DOTs in 2008. Highlighted by this study are the benefits of the LRFD as well as how the flexibility of its usage is being exploited in design practice. The study collected information on current foundation practice, pile analysis and design, pile drivability, pile design verification, and quality control. Since this is the first nationwide study conducted on the LRFD topic following the FHWA mandate, the status on the implementation of LRFD for bridge foundation design was also examined. The study found that: (1) more than 50% of the responded DOTs are using the LRFD for pile design, while 30% are still in transition to the LRFD; and (2) about 30% of the DOTs, who use the LRFD for pile foundations, are using regionally calibrated resistance factors to reduce the foundation costs.  相似文献

This paper describes the development and application of design charts for piled embankment designs. It outlines the computational approach adopted, the geotechnical profiles used, and the application of the design procedure using the charts. The soil profile used for the charts is representative of a Malaysian soft clay profile, involving a more or less normally consolidated soil, with a strength and stiffness that varies linearly with depth. Such a profile is typical of the ground conditions in a variety of countries in the Southeast Asian region. The design charts address the issues of pile capacity, settlement due to embankment load, settlement due to a temporary piling construction platform, and lateral response of piles near the edge of the embankment. The charts consider variations in ground conditions, embankment height, pile length, and pile spacing. An illustrative example is given to demonstrate the use of the charts.  相似文献

Pile Responses Caused by Tunneling   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
In this paper, a two-stage approach is used to analyze the lateral and axial responses of piles caused by tunneling. First, free-field soil movements are estimated based on an analytical method, and, second, these estimated soil movements are imposed on the pile in simplified boundary element analyses to compute the pile responses. Through a parametric study, it is shown that the influence of tunneling on pile response depends on a number of factors, including tunnel geometry, ground loss ratio, soil strength, pile diameter, and ratio of pile length to tunnel cover depth. Simple design charts are presented for estimating maximum pile responses and may be used in practice to assess the behavior of existing piles adjacent to tunneling operations. A published case history has been studied in which the measured lateral pile deflections are compared with those computed using the present method and fair agreement is found.  相似文献

Proof pile load tests are an important means to cope with uncertainties in the design and construction of pile foundations. In this paper, a systematic method to incorporate the results of proof load tests not conducted to failure into the design of pile foundations is developed. In addition, illustrative acceptance criteria for driven piles based on proof load tests are proposed for use in a reliability-based design. Finally, modifications to conventional proof test procedures are studied so that the value derived from proof tests can be maximized. Whether or not a proof test is conducted to failure, its results can be used to update the probability distribution of the pile capacity using the method proposed in this paper. Hence, contributions of the proof test can be included in foundation design in a logical manner by considering several load test parameters such as the number of tests, the test load, the factor of safety, and test results. This adds value to proof load tests and warrants improvements in the procedures for acceptance of pile foundations using proof load tests. A larger test load for proof tests, say 1.5 times the predicted pile capacity, is recommended since it will yield more information about the capacity statistics and thus allow for more economical designs.  相似文献

This paper presents an automated optimal design method using a hybrid genetic algorithm for pile group foundation design. The design process is a sizing and topology optimization for pile foundations. The objective is to minimize the material volume of the foundation taking the configuration, number, and cross-sectional dimensions of the piles as well as the thickness of the pile cap as design variables. A local search operator by the fully stressed design (FSD) approach is incorporated into a genetic algorithm (GA) to tackle two major shortcomings of a GA, namely, large computation effort in searching the optimum design and poor local search capability. The effectiveness and capability of the proposed algorithm are first illustrated by a five by five pile group subjected to different loading conditions. The proposed optimization algorithm is then applied to a large-scale foundation project to demonstrate the practicality of the algorithm. The proposed hybrid genetic algorithm successfully minimizes the volume of material consumption and the result matches the engineering expectation. The FSD operator has great improvement on both design quality and convergence rate. Challenges encountered in the application of optimization techniques to design of pile groups consisting of hundreds of piles are discussed.  相似文献

Based on a numerical study by means of three-dimensional finite-element analysis, this paper discusses investigations of the bearing behavior of piled rafts in overconsolidated clay. It is shown that the interaction between piles and rafts is a major influence. The potential savings of an optimized foundation design are demonstrated for a simple example.  相似文献

This paper presents the response of piles in liquefiable soil under seismic loads. The effects of soil, pile, and earthquake parameters on the two potential pile failure mechanisms, bending and buckling, are examined. The analysis is conducted using a two-dimensional plain strain finite difference program considering a nonlinear constitutive model for soil liquefaction, strength reduction, and pile-soil interaction. The depths of liquefaction, maximum lateral displacement, and maximum pile bending moment are obtained for concrete and steel piles for different soil relative densities, pile diameters, earthquake predominant frequencies, and peak accelerations. The potential failure mechanisms of piles identified from the parametric analysis are discussed.  相似文献

Full-scale testing can be an integral component of quality control/quality assurance for projects involving construction of deep foundations. Rapid load tests are being used in the deep foundation industry as a method for assessing the axial static behavior of deep foundations. Since rapid load tests involve dynamics, inertial and damping forces must be considered in analyzing measured pile response to estimate the static pile response. The unloading point method (UPM) is typically used for this purpose. Generally considered a consequence of load rate effects in clays, results from the UPM must be further modified by a reduction factor to obtain a reasonable estimate of the static pile response. A reduction factor of 0.65 applied to the UPM for clay soil sites has been recommended by others. However, a review and analysis of readily available literature reporting static and rapid pile load test results at sites predominantly consisting of clay soils indicate that an average reduction factor of 0.47 is more appropriate. Rapid load testing should be used judiciously. When using the UPM to estimate static pile capacity from rapid load tests in clay, static load tests should be performed to validate the reduction factor used to interpret rapid load tests.  相似文献

Pile Construction Productivity Assessment   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Bored piles are vital elements for highway bridge foundation. A large number of factors oversees productivity and cost estimation processes for piles, which creates many problems for the time and cost estimators of such process. Therefore, current study is designed to diagnose these problems and assess productivity, cycle time, and cost for pile construction using the artificial neural network (ANN). Data were collected for this study through designated questionnaires, site interviews, and telephone calls to experts in different construction companies. Many variables have been considered to manage the piling construction process. Three-layer, feed forward, and fully connected ANNs were trained with an architecture of seven input neurons, five output neurons, and different hidden layer neurons. The ANN models were validated and proved their robustness in output assessments. Three sets of charts have been developed to assess productivity, cycle time, and cost. This research is relevant to both industry practitioners and researchers. It provides sets of charts for practitioners’ usage to schedule and price out pile construction projects. In addition, it provides researchers with a methodology of applying ANN to pile construction process, its limitation, and future suggestions.  相似文献

The pressure and density dependence of the shear strength of sand poses a tricky problem in pile foundation design. In this study, a correlation is suggested to link the effective friction angle of sand with its initial confining pressure and relative density, and a simple approach incorporating this correlation is presented for predicting pile end bearing capacity. Assessment of the approach against pile load tests shows reasonably good agreement between predictions and measurements. It is also shown that the effect of the state-dependent strength is particularly important in cases where long piles are installed in dense sand deposits and the use of critical state friction angle will produce a conservative prediction in such cases.  相似文献

Integral abutment bridges (IABs) with short steel H-pile (HP) supported foundations ( ? 4?m of pile depth) are economical for many environmentally sensitive sites with shallow bedrock. However, such short piles may not develop an assumed, fixed-end support condition at some depth below the pile cap, which is inconsistent with traditional pile design assumptions involving an equivalent length for bending behavior of the pile. In this study, the response of an IAB with short HP-supported foundations and no special pile tip details such as drilling and socketing is investigated. Instrumentation of a single-span IAB with 4-m-long piles at one abutment and 6.2- to 8.7-m-long piles at the second abutment is described. Instrumentation includes pile strain gauging, pile inclinometers, extensometers to measure abutment movement, earth pressure cells, and thermistors. Pile and bridge response during construction, under controlled live load testing, and due to seasonal movements are presented and discussed. Abutment and pile head rotations due to self-weight, live load, and seasonal movements were all found to be significant. Measured abutment movements were likely affected by both temperature changes and deck creep and shrinkage. Based on the field study results presented here, moderately short HPs driven to bedrock without special tip details appear to perform well in IABs and do not experience stresses larger than those seen by longer piles.  相似文献
