Discusses the contributions made by P. J. Lang, P. Slovic, and L. Squire, the 1993 recipients of the Awards for Distinguished Scientific Contribution presented by the American Psychological Association. Lang is awarded for his pioneering work in behavior therapy and biofeedback, for landmark contributions on emotional imagery and emotional reflex modulation, and for influential theory development concerning the conceptualization and psychological mechanisms of emotion. Slovic is recognized for applying psychology to social problems, for changing the way that people think about environmental hazards, and for enhancing the role of the public in their management. Squire is awarded for his seminal and decisive studies on the brain substrates of declarative memory in humans and monkeys. A biography of each recipient is provided. Reviews the book, A child analysis with Anna Freud by Peter Heller (see record 1990-97274-000). The tension between remembering and forgetting is the daily experience of the psychoanalyst. This takes place not only in the consulting room, but applies to our sense of ourselves and the history of psychoanalysis. Anna Freud died in October 1982. For almost 60 years she had been the heir apparent and then the leader of the international psychoanalytic movement. Yet, not even 10 years after her death, her name seems to have disappeared from psychoanalytic discourse and the contributions of her work and of child analysis to the body of psychoanalytic theory and technique are not discussed. As much as one can learn about the history of child analysis from this book, one must bear in mind the peculiar circumstances surrounding Peter Heller's analysis. Five of his classmates, including his future wife, and his teacher were also in analysis with Anna Freud. He vacationed with the Burlinghams and Anna Freud and wished to have Dorothy Burlingham as his mother. Peter's nanny later became a psychoanalyst and there was talk of Peter's father marrying Anna Freud. Given the multiplicity and complexity of these interrelationships, how could a termination have taken place? This book may be Peter Heller's continuation of his analysis, the exercise of his self-analytic function, and thus finally a termination of his child analysis with Anna Freud. In sharing his termination with us, Peter Heller gives us access to important aspects of our own history and so enables us to shape our future. Peter, a 5-yr-old "favorite child" survived an attack in which his mother slashed his throat with a razor. Peter's reactions to the trauma, his attempts at resolution of ambivalence toward his mother, and finally the emergence of transference and castration anxiety are discussed. Peter's reactions and attempts at conflict resolution are illustrated by excerpts from therapy sessions and discussed from the perspective of normal child development. Parental dynamics, court involvement, and the therapist's countertransference are presented, with suggestions as to how similar cases can be managed to avoid premature termination. Editorial.
This issue features an invited paper by Peter Dodwell, one of Canada's foremost experimental psychologists, who is internationally recognized for his research in visual perception. Dodwell has investigated issues related to spatial vision, motion perception, visual distortion and, recently, mechanisms of the well-known McCulloch Effect. In the article, Dodwell shows that, for all its diversity, his research program has been guided by a couple of central themes. The article reveals, in semi-autobiographical style, the influences that shaped his thinking and the special impact of W. C. Hoffman and his Lie Transformation Group Model of Neuropsychology. The animal-avoidance analogue paradigm of A. D. Lazovick and P. J. Lang (see 35:5) is considered extraneous to understanding the treatment of clinical phobias by A. Cooper, J. B. Furst, and W. H. Bridger (see 43:11) on the grounds that populations and symptom classes lack comparability. Results of a pilot study on which their conclusions are partly based are examined and related to experimental and clinical findings pertaining to variants of in vivo desensitization. Also discussed are interpopulation and interphobia relationships and the heuristic relevance of the animal-avoidance therapy analogue. (20 ref.) 86 children ranging in age from 5 to 14 were asked "How old do you think Peter Pan was?", after seeing the Walt Disney cartoon film, Peter Pan. For the entire group, the Pearson r for their ages and the guessed age for Peter Pan was .51. "Sharing imaginatively in Peter's adventures, the child presumably feels close to Peter and therefore perceives Peter as resembling himself." J. J. Gibson (see PA, Vol 29:5103; see also PA, Vol 81:28168) conceived of a perceptual psychology very different from that taken by mainstream research work in vision over the past 30 yrs. Placing psychology in a biological and physical context and avoiding traditional disciplinary definitions, Gibson outlined a physics relevant to animate life. From this flowed his theory of affordances, his preoccupation with surfaces, and his interest in animal locomotion. Visual motion played a decisive role in rounding out these views. His work here was prophetic, anticipating neurophysiological discoveries on motion sensitivity and directly inspiring more recent studies on higher order aspects of motion encoding. Gibson scrupulously avoided mention of internal representation. Yet, those researchers interested in such internal processes remain deeply indebted to his enduring contributions. Twenty-four women with spider phobia and 45 nonphobic women completed the Disgust Questionnaire (DQ; R Rozin, A. E. Fallon, & R. Mandell; see record 1984-14781-001) and the Spider Phobia Questionnaire (SPQ; R. Klorman, T. C. Weerts, J. E. Hastings, B. G. Melamed, & R J. Lang; see record 1974-30308-001). Participants also underwent behavioral tests concerning disgust sensitivity and fear of spiders. Spider phobic women showed stronger disgust sensitivity than nonphobic women, and spiders were found to have a disgust evoking status that was related to participants' fear of spiders. The relationship between DQ and SPQ was independent of neuroticism and introversion. DQ scores were not associated with a global measure of phobic complaints (i.e., Fear Questionnaire; I. M. Marks & A. Mathews; see record 1980-26848-001). Results are consistent with a disease-avoidance model of spider phobia (G. Matchett & G. C. L. Davey; see record 1991-18606-001), which emphasizes the role of disgust in spider phobia. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Further explores issues stressed by L. Aron and J. Frankel (see record 1994-41100-001) in commenting on J. K. Tabin's (see record 1994-05584-001) article on Freud's motivation for rethinking his seduction theory. The author presents material that confirms Freud's priority in citing the relationship between splitting of the ego and childhood sexual trauma; that describes signs of Ferenczi's considerable emotional difficulty during the last period of his life; and that shows that Freud's referring to Ferenczi as paranoid was a reaction to Ferenczi's hostility to him, significantly predating their public theoretical differences. An important aspect of the last matter is Ferenczi's explanation of his hostility: Freud never helped him with the negative transference that underlay his idealization of Freud. Freud defended himself by saying that negative transference was not understood when he treated Ferenczi. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

One measure commonly used to assess posttraumatic stress disorder is the PTSD Checklist (PCL). Lang and Stein (2005) extracted 4 subsets of PCL items, validating 2 of them for possible use in screening in primary care settings. The viability of the 4 item subsets was evaluated psychometrically in the present study with a sample of Hurricane Katrina survivors (N = 337). Corrected item–total and corrected item–cluster correlations were calculated and compared with those obtained by Lang and Stein. In addition, the sensitivity, specificity, and overall correct classification of the 4 item subsets were evaluated. With methodology approximating Lang and Stein's work, the current data would lead to the development of different screening versions of the PCL. Although some psychometric support was achieved (e.g., high sensitivity), use of the Lang and Stein PCL item subsets for screening natural disaster survivors appears unjustified on the basis of the present data.
