Kinematics of the pelvic girdle and the thoracic and lumbar segments in the course of the lateral inclinations and rotations of the spine

Physiological displacements of the trunk are the addition of these of the pelvic girdle and thoracic and lumbar spine segments. For a long time (3), this conjunction had been noticed but without numbered precisions. The purpose of this communication is to appreciate quantitatively, from a series of 16 subjects, the respective share of each components during lateral bending movements in the frontal plan and movements of rotation in the transverse plan. It results from this work that the pelvic girdle presents as reduced amplitude (4 degrees) in lateral bending on the other hand, displacement predominate to the level of thoracic spine (50 degrees). In rotation pelvic displacements are very important (30 degrees), while the spine so thoracic that lumbar has a weak participation (inferior to 5 degrees). Moderated abduction of hips increases by significant manner the motility of the pelvic girdle.     

Characteristics of the sympathetic innervation of the nictitating membrane and of the vasculature of the nose and tongue of the cat

Vasomotor responses from the nasal mucosa and tongue, and contractions of the nictitating membrane, were recorded on stimulation of the cervical sympathetic or internal carotid nerves. Preganglionic sympathetic nerve fibres which elicited a membrane response possessed a lower threshold than those which evoked nasal vasoconstriction, while the latter displayed a lower threshold than fibres which evoked tongue vasoconstriction. The sympathetic vasodilator fibres to the tongue whose activity was revealed after alpha-receptor blockade, had a similar threshold to the vasoconstrictor fibres. Membrane contraction, nasal vasoconstriction and occasionally tongue vasoconstriction could be evoked by stimulating the internal carotid nerve. The postganglionic fibres innervating the nasal mucosa had a similar threshold to those of the nictitating membrane, which may indicate that there are small myelinated fibres innervating the mucosa. The preganglionic compound nerve action potential had four major components, S1-S4. S1, S2 and usually S3 fibres were associated with membrane contraction; S2, S3 and sometimes S1 fibres were associated with nasal vasoconstriction; and S3, usually S2 and occasionally S1 fibres were associated with vasoconstriction in the tongue. It is concluded that each of these three groups of nerve fibres, but not S4 fibres, may include fibres associated functionally with the three effectors. There was a considerable difference between the relative amplitude of the responses of the three effectors elicited by stimulation of the cervical sympathetic nerve at frequencies between 0.2 and 2 Hz. Vasoconstrictor responses were relatively larger than membrane contractions suggesting differences in the mechanisms of neurotransmission at the neuroeffector junctions.

Women and the family of the future

Prognostic indicators of short-term outcome were identified in 69 women with the DSM-III-R diagnosis of bulimia nervosa who participated in a weekly 10-session structured cognitive-behavioral outpatient group program. Prior to treatment, all subjects completed the computerized Diagnostic Interview Schedule (DIS), the Moos Family Environment Scale (FES), the Diagnostic Survey for Eating Disorders (DSED), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the Hopkins Symptom Checklist, Revised (SCL-90-R), the Bulimic Cognitive Distortions Scale (BCDS), the Eating Disorders Inventory (EDI), and the Bulimic Symptoms Checklist (BSCL). The latter three scales were readministered on completion of the 10-week group. Symptom improvement was assessed by examining percentage reduction in binge frequency, purge frequency, and summed scores for the EDI subscales Bulimia, Drive for Thinness, and Body Dissatisfaction. The only significant predictor of improvement in binge frequency and bulimic cognitions was family environment. Conflicted, controlling, and over-organized family environments appear to impede both reductions in binge frequency and changes in bulimic cognitions. Reduction in vomit frequency was associated with weight history and with laxative or diuretic use. The implications for planning psychotherapeutic interventions in bulimia nervosa are discussed.

This study evaluated the cost of autologous and homologous blood products. The cost effectiveness of the transfusion therapy was not evaluated. To compare the different products, the cost of one gram of transfused haemoglobin was calculated. Acute normovolaemic haemodilution is the most economical technique. Intraoperative autologous transfusion without washing is the most expensive. All blood products from the autologous techniques, except the latter, were less expensive than homologous red cells.     

Infinity and the limits of the unconscious

Macrophages play an important role in the intestinal mucosal immune system. However, they are a poorly defined cell population. We therefore determined their phenotype in normal colonic mucosa. Macrophages were isolated from colonic biopsies and surgical specimens by collagenase digestion. Colonic macrophages were positively sorted by anti-CD33 magnetic beads. Flow cytometric triple fluorescence analysis was applied to study CD14, CD16, CD33, CD44, CD11b, CD11c, CD64, HLA-DR, CD80, CD86 and CD3/CD19 expression. CD33 was evaluated as a positive marker for intestinal macrophages. CD33+ cells isolated from normal colonic mucosa showed co-expression of the established intracellular macrophage marker CD68 in FACS analysis. CD33+ cells were capable of phagocytosis. Isolation of this cell population by magnetic anti-CD33 beads and culture resulted in a 4.2-40-fold increase in IL-1beta and 4.5-44-fold increase in tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) secretion compared with unsorted lamina propria mononuclear cells (LPMC). Of the CD33+ cells, 90.9 +/- 6.9% (mean +/- s.d.) were CD44+. However, macrophages from colonic mucosa showed only a low expression of CD14 (10.5 +/- 3.8%), CD16 (10.1 +/- 3.9%), HLA-DR (27.3 +/- 9.2%), CD11b (17.4 +/- 6.8%), CD11c (17.8 +/- 10.4%). Furthermore, expression of CD80 (9.2 +/- 4.2%) and CD86 (15.1 +/- 7.3%) was low, suggesting a low ability of normal intestinal macrophages to activate T cells and T cell-mediated immune responses. We conclude that CD33 is useful for the isolation and flow cytometric characterization of colonic macrophages. These cells exhibit a single phenotype in normal mucosa (CD33++, CD44++, CD14-, CD16-, CD11b-, CD11c-, HLA-DRlow, CD80-, CD86-) lacking lipopolysaccharide (LPS) receptor and costimulatory molecules.     

Relationship between the thickness of the aortic adventitia and the fat content of blood and the aortic wall

10 rabbits underwent a cholesterol feeding. 10 rabbits were used as control animals. After 12 weeks in the tissue extract of the intima-media-complex of the aorta as well as in the serum the total lipids and the total cholesterol were determined. On histological preparations the thickness of the adventitia of the aorta was measured. In comparison to the control group the animals fed with cholesterol showed a significant increase of the lipid values in the serum and the aorta as well as of the thickness of the adventitia. However, no connections could be proved between the parameters of the serum lipids and the morphological changes of the adventitia.     

Study of the comparability of the WISC and the WAIS.

Assessed the comparability of the WISC and WAIS for below-average-intelligence Ss by administering the subtests of the 2 instruments in randomized order to 120 16-yr-old students. Analysis of variance revealed higher WAIS than WISC Verbal (p
