This paper presents a comprehensive study on the strain-induced martensitic transformation and reversion transformation of the strain-induced martensite in AISI 304 stainless steel using a number of complementary techniques such as dilatometry, calorimetry, magnetometry, and in-situ X-ray diffraction, coupled with high-resolution microstructural transmission Kikuchi diffraction analysis. Tensile deformation was applied at temperatures between room temperature and 213 K (−60 °C) in order to obtain a different volume fraction of strain-induced martensite (up to ~70 pct). The volume fraction of the strain-induced martensite, measured by the magnetometric method, was correlated with the total elongation, hardness, and linear thermal expansion coefficient. The thermal expansion coefficient, as well as the hardness of the strain-induced martensitic phase was evaluated. The in-situ thermal treatment experiments showed unusual changes in the kinetics of the reverse transformation (α′ → γ). The X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the reverse transformation may be stress assisted—strains inherited from the martensitic transformation may increase its kinetics at the lower annealing temperature range. More importantly, the transmission Kikuchi diffraction measurements showed that the reverse transformation of the strain-induced martensite proceeds through a displacive, diffusionless mechanism, maintaining the Kurdjumov–Sachs crystallographic relationship between the martensite and the reverted austenite. This finding is in contradiction to the results reported by other researchers for a similar alloy composition.

The martensite substructure after ausforming has been studied for two different martensite morphologies: partially twinned, lenticular martensite (Fe-33 pct Ni, Ms =-105?C) and completely twinned “thin plate” martensite (Fe-31 pct Ni-0.23 pct C, Ms = -170?C), and in both cases ausforming produces a dislocation cell structure in the austenite which is inherited, without modification, by the martensite. In the Fe-Ni alloy, the dislocation cell structure is found in both the twinned (near the midrib) and untwinned (near the interface) regions, the latter also containing a regular dislocation network generated by the transformation itself and which is unaltered by the austenite dislocation cell structure. Similarly, in the Fe-Ni-C alloy, the transformation twins are unimpeded by the prior cell structure. These observations show that carbide precipitation during ausforming is not necessarily required to pin the austenite cell structure and that the martensite-austenite interface, backed by either twins or dislocations, does not exhibit a ”sweeping” effect. Although the martensite transformation twins are not inhibited by the ausforming cell structure, they do undergo a refinement with increased ausforming, and it is indicated that the transformation twin width in martensite depends on the austenite hardness. However, the relative twin widths remain unchanged, as expected from the crystallographic theory.  相似文献

Superplastic forming offers a promising approach for reducing the cost of high-performance metal components with complex shapes. Severe thermomechanical deformation is one method for producing the fine grain structure needed to permit superplastic forming economically. Our approach to generating fine-grained microstructures is by cyclic heat treatment of rapidly solidified material. First, a metastable structure is produced by rapid quenching of the liquid metal. Then, solid-state phase transformations at modest temperatures are employed to refine this structure. In the ultra-high-carbon steels (UHCS) studied, the brittle as-cast structure of martensite and austenite was transformed, after cyclic heat treatment, to a ductile mixture of 1-μm ferrite and 0.25-μm carbide. Varying the heat-treat temperatures by 100 °C within the transformation range had little effect on the scale of the microstructure. Higher C resulted in coarser carbide spheroids, addition of Al refined the microstructure, and the finest mean carbide size was obtained with an intermediate level (5 pct) of Cr. Refinement of the martensite plates retained austenite via cyclic tempering and austenitization was found to be the key step in the overall mechanism for phase transformation-induced grain refinement in rapidly solidified UHCS.  相似文献

The possible decomposition of metastable austenite during the partitioning process in the highend quenching and partitioning(QP)steels is somewhat neglected by most researchers. The effects of primary martensite and alloying elements including manganese, cobalt and aluminum on the isothermal decomposition of austenite during typical QP process were studied by dilatometry. The transformation kinetics was studied systematically and resulting microstructures were discussed in details. The results suggested that the primary martensite decreased the incubation period of isothermal decomposition by accelerating the nucleation process owing to dislocations especially on phase and grain boundaries. This effect can be eliminated by a flash heating which recovered dislocations.Co addition significantly promoted the bainite transformation during partitioning while Al and Mn suppressed the isothermal bainite transformation. The bainite transformation played an important role in carbon distribution during partitioning, and hence the amount and stability of austenite upon final quenching. The bainite transformation during partitioning is an important factor in optimizing the microstructure in QP steels.  相似文献

The mechanism of austenite reversion in 18 Ni Co-free maraging steel (250 grade) has been established by conducting extensive X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) under differently aged conditions. It has been proposed that contrary to the precipitate dissolution mechanism suggested for the initiation of austenite reversion in 18Ni-8Co-5Mo type maraging steels, the initiation of transformation of martensite to austenite in this type of maraging steel is due to the diffusion of Ni from matrix to the dislocations and other defect structures on prolonged/high temperature ageing. This results in local enrichment of Ni which lowers both AS and MS temperatures of the region. Lowering of these transformation temperatures is responsible for the early reversion of martensite to Ni-enriched stable austenite which, on subsequent cooling to room temperature, does not transform back to martensite.  相似文献

The structure of corrosion-resistant austenitic 08Kh18N10T steel is studied after equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP), heating, and subsequent cyclic tests. After ECAP, an oriented mainly subgrain structure with a structural element size of 100–250 nm and a high fraction of deformation twins forms in the austenite of the steel, and 42 vol % of lath martensite appears. Dynamic twinning, martensitic transformation, dynamic recovery, and even recrystallization take place in the 08Kh18N10T steel during cyclic deformation in the course of fatigue tests according to the scheme of repeated tension. The fatigue strength increases after ECAP due to the refinement and twinning of an austenite structure and the appearance of martensite. The fatigue limit is maximal after ECAP and heating at 550°C for 20 h due to a high annealing twin density in a predominantly austenitic recrystallized matrix, intense dynamic twinning, and martensitic transformation during cyclic deformation.  相似文献

In this work, two medium Mn steels (5.8 and 5.7 wt pct Mn) were subjected to a quenching and partitioning (Q&P) treatment employing a partitioning temperature which corresponded to the start of austenite reverse transformation (ART). The influence of a 1.6 wt pct Ni addition in one of the steels and cycle parameters on austenite stability and mechanical properties was also studied. High contents of retained austenite were obtained in the lower quenching temperature (QT) condition, which at the same time resulted in a finer microstructure. The addition of Ni was effective in stabilizing higher contents of austenite. The partitioning of Mn and Ni from martensite into austenite was observed by TEM–EDS. The partitioning behaviour of Mn depended on the QT condition. The lower QT condition facilitated Mn enrichment of austenite laths during partitioning and stabilization of a higher content of austenite. The medium Mn steel containing Ni showed outstanding values of the product of tensile strength (TS) and total elongation (TEL) in the lower QT condition and a higher mechanical stability of the austenite.

Roles of dislocations and grain boundaries in martensite nucleation   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
In order to elucidate roles of dislocations and grain boundaries in martensite nucleation, the transformation temperature (Ms) of specimens austenitized at various temperatures and subjected to prestrain has been measured, using Fe-Ni, Fe-Ni-C, and Fe-Cr-C alloys. It is concluded that the plastic accommodation, in austenite, of the shape strain of the transforming martensite is a vital step in the nucleation event. Any factors impeding such plastic accommodation, such as the lack of dislocations, work hardening, and grain refinement, suppress the transformation. Contrary to the general belief, dislocations themselves do not act as favorable nucleation sites. Grain boundaries provide nucleation site, but only certain types of grain boundaries are qualified to be potential nuclei. A quantitative analysis shows that the increasing difficulty for the plastic accommodation with decreasing grain size is the main factor to depress Ms in fine-grained specimens.  相似文献

A series of iron-platinum alloys containing 25 or 27 at. pct platinum and with ordering of the γ-phase varying from substantial disorder to nearly complete order have been thermally cycled between 25°C and - 196°C. The kinetics of the γ⇌α transformations, the hysteresis revealed by electrical resistanceJtemperature plots, the thermoelastic growth and the reappearance of an identical microstructure after thermal cycling (the microstructural memory effect) were studied as a function of the ordering of the γ-phase. Thermoelastic growth does not appear to be affected by changes in the degree of order of partially ordered specimens but the microstructural memory was imperfect in the most highly ordered specimen examined. In agreement with earlier observations by Dunne and Wayman,3 the difference between the As and Ms temperatures and the hysteresis decrease markedly as the order is increased. It is shown by transmission electron microscopy that in all but the most highly-ordered specimens the α- γ transformation produces plates of austenite with a high density of dislocations. These plates are separated from the surrounding untransformed parent austenite by arrays of dislocation loops lying in the interfaces between untransformed parent austenite and the original martensite plates. All the dislocations have a Burgers vector direction which is the same as that of the usual slip dislocation in austenite. Such dislocations lying in a habit plane must be sessile. In the well-ordered specimen dislocation pairs, typical of glide dislocations in a crystal with long-range order, were formed in the austenite formed by the reverse transformation. These dislocations were segregated into roughly plate-like clusters, but the number of clusters in unit volume was appreciably less than the number of original plates of martensite. In this case, no arrays of sessile loops of dislocations mark the locations of the original martensite-austenite interface. It is deduced from the microscopic and kinetic results that the inherited nuclei responsible for the microstructural memory effect are located in localized volumes of highly dislocated austenite formed by the α- γ transformation. No unique dislocation configurations which could be associated with specific nuclei were found. The effects of ordering on the various kinetic effects and the microstructural memory are discussed in terms of the concept of inherited nuclei, the change of the flow stress of the γ-phase with ordering and temperature and the variation of To and the transformation driving-force with ordering. The strength, annealing behavior, and microstructure of reverted austenite has been measured in an Fe-31 pct Ni-0.03 pct C alloy that was plastically deformed in the martensitic state prior to the reversion to austenite. Mechanical properties of reverted austenite (e.g., austenite formed by the reverse martensite shear transformation) were measured as a function of the amount of prior deformation, heating and cooling rates to the reversion temperature, austenitizing temperature and time, repetitive cycling from martensite to reverted austenite, and prereversion heat treatments. The results showed that 80 pet prior deformation increases the yield strength of reverted austenite about 30 pct. Along with this strengthening, the dislocation configuration changes from a plate-like fine structure with a random array of tangled dislocations in reverted samples without prior deformation to a equiaxed fine structure with a high density of tangled dislocations within the fine structure in samples with 80 pct deformation prior to reversion. Although smaller amounts of prior deformation (20 pct) have only a small effect on the strength of the reverted austenite, this amount of prior deformation significantly increases the driving force for recrystallization. The results are explained on the basis that the prior deformation and the reversion process produce separate components to the strength and annealing behavior. E. It is crucial to conduct in-depth research on the cryogenic-treatment mechanism to promote the standardization and industrialization of cryogenic treatment in the high-speed steel (HSS) industry. In this study, the microstructure and mechanical properties (microhardness and impact toughness) of AISI M35 HSS after deep-cryogenic treatment (DCT) and conventional heat treatment (CHT) are investigated, and the microstructural characteristics at different stages of CHT and cryogenic treatment are studied. It is indicated in the results that DCT of the steel leads to the formation of fresh martensite from residual austenite, as well as the introduction of more dislocations due to plastic deformation. In addition, the deep-cryogenic-treated specimen that is tempered shows increased numbers of martensite blocks and secondary carbide precipitation. The carbides in the steel are mainly V-rich (MC), W–Mo-rich (M6C), and Cr-rich (M23C6). The hardness of the deep-cryogenic-treated samples increases by approximately 50 HV1 because of the transformation of residual austenite and dislocation strengthening. Furthermore, specimens that are both deep-cryogenic treated and tempered exhibit a 30% increase in impact toughness and a more uniform distribution in hardness, likely due to the more homogeneous precipitation of secondary carbides and refinement of martensite.  相似文献

The reverse transformation behavior upon heating to intercritical temperature was studied in Fe-0.21C-2.2Mn-1.5Si (wt pct) alloy with three initial microstructures. One is the cold-rolled (CR) structure and two others are martensite having different fractions of retained austenite. The CR structure exhibits slower reverse transformation kinetics than martensite due to the lesser population of potent nucleation sites and coarse cementite particles. The film type of retained austenite at the martensite lath boundary contributes to the earlier start of the reverse transformation, because it can proceed as the growth of pre-existing retained austenite, which makes the nucleation process less critical. Besides, the growth of interlath austenite plays an essential role in the evolution of fine lath-type reverse-transformed microstructure, which was difficult to obtain from similar initial microstructures of martensite having negligible fraction of interlath austenite.  相似文献

The present work addresses functional fatigue of binary NiTi and ternary NiTiCu (with 5, 7.5, and 10 at. pct Cu) shape memory (SM) spring actuators. We study how the alloy composition and processing affect the actuator stability during thermomechanical cycling. Spring lengths and temperatures were monitored and it was found that functional fatigue results in an accumulation of irreversible strain (in austenite and martensite) and in increasing martensite start temperatures. We present phenomenological equations that quantify both phenomena. We show that cyclic actuator stability can be improved by using precycling, subjecting the material to cold work, and adding copper. Adding copper is more attractive than cold work, because it improves cyclic stability without sacrificing the exploitable actuator stroke. Copper reduces the width of the thermal hysteresis and improves geometrical and thermal actuator stability, because it results in a better crystallographic compatibility between the parent and the product phase. There is a good correlation between the width of the thermal hysteresis and the intensity of irrecoverable deformation associated with thermomechanical cycling. We interpret this finding on the basis of a scenario in which dislocations are created during the phase transformations that remain in the microstructure during subsequent cycling. These dislocations facilitate the formation of martensite (increasing martensite start (M S ) temperatures) and account for the accumulation of irreversible strain in martensite and austenite.  相似文献

The stability of reversely formed austenite and related mechanism of transformation were investigated against temperature and time in an Fe-9.6Ni-7.1Mn (at. pct) martensitic steel during intercritical annealing at a dual-phase (α + γ) region. Dilatometry, electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD), atom probe tomography (APT), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to characterize the mechanism of reverse transformation. It was found that under intercritical annealing at 853 K (580 °C), when the heating rate is 20 K/s (20 °C/s), reverse transformation takes place through a mixed diffusion control mechanism, i.e., controlled by bulk diffusion and diffusion along the interface, where Ni controls the diffusion as its diffusivity is lower than that of Mn in the martensite and austenite. Increasing the intercritical annealing to 873 K (600 °C) at an identical heating rate of 20 K/s (20 °C/s) showed that reverse transformation occurs through a sequential combination of both martensitic and diffusional mechanisms. The transition temperature from diffusional to martensitic transformation was obtained close to 858 K (585 °C). Experimental results revealed that the austenite formed by the diffusional mechanism at 853 K (580 °C) mainly remains untransformed after cooling to ambient temperature due to the enrichment with Ni and Mn. It was also found that the stability of the reversely formed austenite by martensitic mechanism at 873 K (600 °C) is related to grain refinement.  相似文献

A hybrid in-situ characterization system, which couples the laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM) with the time-resolved X-ray diffraction (TRXRD) measurement with synchrotron radiation, was used to characterize the microstructure evolution during heat-affected zone (HAZ) thermal cycling of high-strength and blast-resistant steel. The combined technique has a time resolution of 0.3 seconds that allows for high-fidelity measurements of transformation kinetics, lattice parameters, and morphological features. The measurements showed a significant reduction in the martensite start transformation temperature with a decrease in the prior austenite grain size. In addition, the LSCM images confirmed the concurrent refinement of martensite packet size with smaller austenite grain sizes. This is consistent with dilatometric observations. The austenite grain size also influenced the rate of transformation (df m /dT); however, the measurements from the hybrid (surface) and dilatometric (volume) measurements were inconsistent. Challenges and future directions of adopting this technique for comprehensive tracking of microstructure evolution in steels are discussed.  相似文献

We present experimental and theoretical evidence of thermoelastic martensites in Fe29Ni18Co4Ti alloys. In this class of alloys, the high strength in the austenite domains limits the slip deformation as verified with transmission electron microscopy. The restriction of slip permits a higher degree of recoverability of the transformation. Using both single crystals with [123] orientation and polycrystals, the appearance of martensite plates upon deformation, and their reversion back to austenite upon heating (the shape memory effect), is revealed with in-situ optical microscopy. Theoretical results for the transformation strains and the detwinning of martensite are presented, which demonstrate convincingly the potential of these classes of alloys. Electrical resistance measurements identified the stress and temperature levels at the onset of forward and reverse transformations in isothermal deformation and thermal cycling experiments, respectively. The return of the electrical resistance to its reference value, upon austenite to martensite followed by martensite to austenite transformation, verified the recovery in the transformation strains measured in the experiments.  相似文献

Although there has been much research regarding the effect of austenite deformation on accelerated cooled microstructures in microalloyed steels, there is still a lack of accurate data on boundary densities and effective grain sizes. Previous results observed from optical micrographs are not accurate enough, because, for displacive transformation products, a substantial part of the boundaries have disorientation angles below 15 deg. Therefore, in this research, a niobium microalloyed steel was used and electron backscattering diffraction mappings were performed on all of the transformed microstructures to obtain accurate results on boundary densities and grain refinement. It was found that with strain rising from 0 to 0.5, a transition from bainitic ferrite to acicular ferrite occurs and the effective grain size reduces from 5.7 to 3.1 μm. When further increasing strain from 0.5 to 0.7, dynamic recrystallization was triggered and postdynamic softening occurred during the accelerated cooling, leading to an inhomogeneous and coarse transformed microstructure. In the entire strain range, the density changes of boundaries with different disorientation angles are distinct, due to different boundary formation mechanisms. Finally, the controversial influence of austenite deformation on effective grain size of low-temperature transformation products was argued to be related to the differences in transformation conditions and final microstructures.

The effect of plastic deformation introduced by rolling at room temperature on the austenite start temperature of an Fe-30.3 wt pct Ni-0.005 wt pct C alloy has been determined. The austenite start temperature increases monotonically with deformation. Microhardness measurements show that the austenite start temperature increases with the yield strength of the martensite. The temperature at which martensite reversal initiates is not affected by the amount of martensite present, and, therefore, is not dependent on the martensite plate size. It is suggested that the reverse martensite transformation initiates at the martensite-austenite interface and is controlled by interface propagation.  相似文献
