An Al-3 pct Mg-0.2 pct Sc alloy was fabricated by casting and subjected to equal-channel angular pressing to reduce the grain size to ∼0.2 μm. Very high tensile elongations were achieved in this alloy at temperatures over the range from 573 to 723 K, with elongations up to >2000 pct at temperatures of 673 and 723 K and strain rates at and above 10−2 s−1. By contrast, samples of the same alloy subjected to cold rolling (CR) yielded elongations to failure of <400 pct at 673 K. An analysis of the experimental data for the equal-channel angular (ECA)-pressed samples shows consistency with conventional superplasticity including an activation energy for superplastic flow which is within the range anticipated for grain boundary diffusion in pure Al and interdiffusion in Al-Mg solid solution alloys.  相似文献

Tensile tests were carried out at temperatures of 673 to 773 K and strain rates of 1×10−3 to 1 s−1 on an ultrafine-grained (UFG) 5083 Al alloy containing 0.2 wt pct Sc fabricated by equal-channel angular pressing, in order to examine its high-strain-rate superplastic characteristics. The mechanical data for the alloy at 723 and 773 K exhibited a sigmoidal behavior in a double logarithmic plot of the maximum true stress vs true strain rate. The strain-rate sensitivity was 0.25 to 0.3 in the low-( <5×10−3 s−1) and high- ( >5×10−2 s−1) strain-rate regions, and ∼0.5 in the intermediate-strain-rate region (5×10−3 s−1< <5 × 10−2 s−1). The maximum elongation to failure of ∼740 pct was obtained at 1×10−2 s−1 and 773 K. By contrast, no sigmoidal behavior was observed at 673 K. Instead, the strain-rate sensitivity of 0.3 was measured in both intermediate-and low-strain-rate regions, but it was about 0.25 in the high-strain-rate region. High-strain-rate superplasticity (HSRS) in the intermediate-strain-rate region at 723 and 773 K was dominated by grain-boundary sliding (GBS) associated with continuous recrystallization and preservation of fine recrystallized grains by second-phase particles. However, the activation energy for HSRS of the present alloy was lower than that predicted for any standard high-temperature deformation mechanism. The low activation energy was likely the result of the not-fully equilibrated microstructure due to the prior severe plastic deformation (SPD). For 673 K, the mechanical data and the microstructural examination revealed that viscous glide was a dominant deformation mechanism in the intermediate- and low-strain-rate regions. Deformation in the high-strain-rate region at all testing temperatures was attributed to dislocation breakaway from solute atmospheres.  相似文献

Nbss/Nb3Al in-situ composite with the nominal composition of Nb-16 mol pct Al-1 mol pct B, consisting of bcc niobium solid solution (Nbss) and A15 ordered Nb3Al, was synthesized by arc melting, homogenization annealing, and isothermal forging, and their superplastic deformation behavior was investigated by tensile tests and microstructure observations. Maximum superplastic elongation over 750 pct was obtained at 1573 K and at a strain rate of 1.6 × 10−4 s−1 for as-forged specimens. Phase transformation from Nbss to Nb3Al was observed to occur during superplastic deformation. Dynamic phase transformation during superplastic deformation progresses more quickly than static phase transformation during annealing without applied stress. Dynamic phase transformation is accompanied by phase-boundary migration, which operates as an accommodation process of grain-boundary sliding. Dislocation creep dominates deformation and grain-boundary sliding is inhibited at a high strain rate, while grain-boundary sliding and cavity formation are promoted at a low strain rate because of insufficient accommodation of grain-boundary sliding arising from sluggish dynamic phase transformation. It is concluded that there exists an optimum strain rate that guarantees the grain-boundary sliding and the rapid dynamic phase transformation to achieve maximum superplastic elongation.  相似文献

A submicrometer-grained structure was introduced in a commercial 5083 Al alloy by imposing an effective strain of ∼8 through equal channel angular pressing. In order to examine the low-temperature superplastic behavior, the as-equal channel angular pressed (as-ECAP) samples were tensile tested in the strain rate range of 10−5 to 10−2 s−1 at temperatures of 498 to 548 K corresponding to 0.58 to 0.65 T m, where T m is the incipient melting point. The mechanical data of the alloy at 498 and 548 K exhibited a sigmoidal behavior in a double logarithmic plot of the maximum true stress vs true strain rate. The strain rate sensitivity was 0.1 to 0.2 in the low- and high-strain rate regions and 0.4 in the intermediate-strain rate region, indicating the potential for superplasticity. At 523 K, instead of the sigmoidal behavior, a strain rate sensitivity of 0.4 was maintained to low strain rates. A maximum elongation of 315 pct was obtained at 548 K and 5×10−4 s−1. The activation energy for deformation in the intermediate-strain rate region was estimated as 63 kJ/mol. Low-temperature superplasticity of the ultrafine grained 5083 Al alloy was attributed to grain boundary sliding that is rate-controlled by grain boundary diffusion, with a low activation energy associated with nonequilibrium grain boundaries. Cavity stringers parallel to the tensile axis were developed during deformation, and the failure occurred in a quasi-brittle manner with moderately diffusive necking.  相似文献

The superplastic behavior of thermomechanically treated P/M 7091 aluminum alloy was assessed in the temperature range of 573 to 773 K. The thermomechanical treatment (TMT) comprised of three steps of solution treatment, overaging, and warm rolling. There are large η-phase (MgZn2) precipitate particles of average size of 1.30 μm in the overaged condition. The warm-rolled alloy undergoes continuous recrystallization at the test temperatures of 573 and 623 K, exhibiting a maximum tensile elongation of 450 pct at 573 K and a strain rate of 8 × 10−5 s−1. The precipitate particles play a major role in the process of continuous recrystallization. For a given volume fraction of precipitate particles and constant amount of warm rolling (in the course of TMT), an optimum precipitate particle size is expected to maximize the rate of continuous recrystallization and render the finest recrystallized grain size. The warm-rolled alloy undergoes static recrystallization at temperatures above 673 K. The grain growth accompanying the deformation at these test temperatures limits the tensile ductility to a lower value. Irrespective of the test temperature and strain rate, the specimens undergo extensive cavitation when deformed at elevated temperatures.  相似文献

The deformation behavior of an extruded Ni-30 (at. pct) Al−20Fe−0.05Zr intermetallic alloy was studied in the temperature range of 300 to 1300 K under initial tensile strain rates varying between about 10−6 and 2×10−3 s−1 and in constant load compression creep between 1073 and 1300 K. The deformation microstructures of the fractured specimens were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Three deformation regimes were observed: Region I consisted of an athermal regime of low tensile ductility (less than 0.3 pct) occurring between 400 and 673 K, where the substructure consisted of slip bands in a few grains. Exponential creep was dominant in region II between 673 and 1073 K, where the substructure changed from a mixture of dislocation tangles, loops, and dipoles at 673 K to a microstructure consisting of subgrains and dislocation tangles at 973 K. The tensile ductility was generally about 2.0 to 2.5 pct below 980 K in this region. A significant improvement in tensile ductility was observed in region III, which occurred between 1073 and 1300 K. An analysis of the data suggests that viscous glide creep with a stress exponent,n, of about 3 and high-temperature dislocation climb withn≈4.5 where the two dominant creep mechanisms in this region depending on stress and temperature. The average activation energy for deformation in this region was about 310±30 kJ mol−1 for both processes. In this case, a transition from viscous glide creep to dislocation climb occurred when σ/E<1.7×10−4, where σ is the applied stress andE is the Young’s modulus.  相似文献

A rapidly solidified and thermomechanically processed fine-grained eutectic NiAl−Cr alloy of the composition Ni33Al33Cr34 (at, pct) exhibits structural superplasticity in the temperature regime from 900°C to 1000°C at strain rates ranging from 10−5 to 10−3 s−1. The material consists of a B2-ordered intermetallic NiAl(Cr) solid solution matrix containing a fine dispersion of bcc chromium. A high strain-rate-sensitivity exponent of m=0.55 was achieved in strain-rate-change tests at strain rates of about 10−4 s−1. Maximum uniform elongations up to 350 pct engineering strain were recorded in superplastic strain to failure tests. Activation energy analysis of superplastic flow was performed in order to establish the diffusion-controlled dislocation accommodation process of grain boundary sliding. An activation energy of Q c=288±15 kJ/mole was determined. This value is comparable with the activation energy of 290 kJ/mole for lattice diffusion of nickel and for 63Ni tracer selfdiffusion in B2-ordered NiAl. The principal deformation mechanism of superplastic flow in this material is grain-boundary sliding accommodated by dislocation climb controlled by lattice diffusion, which is typical for class II solid-solution alloys. Failure in superplastically strained tensile samples of the fine-grained eutectic alloy occurred by cavitation formations along NiAl‖‖Cr interfaces.  相似文献

The effect of friction stir processing on the superplastic behavior of extruded Al-4Mg-1Zr was examined at 350 °C to 600 °C and at initial strain rates of 1×10−3 to 1 s−1. A combination of a fine grain size of 1.5 μm and high-angle grain boundaries in the friction stir-processed (FSP) alloy led to considerably enhanced superplastic ductility, much-reduced flow stress, and a shift to a higher optimum strain rate and lower optimum temperature. The as-extruded alloy exhibited the highest superplastic ductility of 1015 pct at 580 °C and an initial strain rate of 1×10−2s−1, whereas a maximum elongation of 1280 pct was obtained at 525 °C and an initial strain rate of 1×10−1s−1 for the FSP alloy. The FSP alloy exhibited enhanced superplastic deformation kinetics compared to that predicted by the constitutive relationship for superplasticity in fine-grained aluminum alloys. A possible origin for enhanced superplastic deformation kinetics in the FSP condition is proposed.  相似文献

The effect of microstructural evolution on superplastic deformation parameters, such as the nature of σ-ε plots, strain-rate sensitivity parameter, and activation energy, were studied for unstable and thermally stable microstructures of a Zr-2.5 wt pct Nb pressure-tube alloy. Two types of differential strain-rate tests (increasing temperature (IT) and decreasing temperature (DT), in the temperature range of 610 °C to 810 °C at 20 °C intervals) were conducted within a strain-rate range of 10−5 to 10−3 s−1. Single specimens were used to obtain the σ-ε plots for all the test temperatures in the aforementioned temperature range. The effect of orientation (with respect to the axial direction of the tube) on the superplastic deformation parameters was also studied. The microstructural evolution was studied along the three orthogonal planes of the tube by water quenching underformed samples in the beginning of differential strain-rate tests at each test temperature. The observed apparent activation-energy values associated with deformation were in the two distinct ranges of 287 to 326 and 151 to 211 kJ/mole. In the temperature range of 730 °C to 810 °C, the apparent activation-energy value depended on the direction of approach of the test temperature. The mechanisms of superplastic deformation in this alloy were found to be dislocation climb—controlled creep in region III and grain-boundary sliding accommodated by grain-boundary diffusion or lattice diffusion in the α or β phases in region II. Based on the observed microstructural features, a model to explain the σ-ε plots and apparent activation energy has been proposed.  相似文献

The low-temperature superplasticity of ultra-fine-grained (UFG) Ti-6Al-4V was established as a function of temperature and strain rate. The equiaxed-alpha grain size of the starting material was reduced from 11 to 0.3 μm (without a change in volume fraction) by imposing an effective strain of ∼4 via isothermal, equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) at 873 K. The ultrafine microstructure so produced was relatively stable during annealing at temperatures up to 873 K. Uniaxial tension and load-relaxation tests were conducted for both the starting (coarse-grained (CG)) and UFG materials at temperatures of 873 to 973 K and strain rates of 5 × 10−5 to 10−2 s−1. The tension tests revealed that the UFG structure exhibited considerably higher elongations compared to those of the CG specimens at the same temperature and strain rate. A total elongation of 474 pct was obtained for the UFG alloy at 973 K and 10−4 s−1. This fact strongly indicated that low-temperature superplasticity could be achieved using an UFG structure through an enhancement of grain-boundary sliding in addition to strain hardening. The deformation mechanisms underlying the low-temperature superplasticity of UFG Ti-6Al-4V were also elucidated by the load-relaxation tests and accompanying interpretation based on inelastic deformation theory.  相似文献

The microtexture and grain boundary misorientation distributions (i.e., mesotexture) of the superplastic alloy Al-5 pct Ca-5 pct Zn have been investigated in the as-processed condition, after annealing at 520 °C (for times ranging from 7 minutes to 90 hours) and after tensile straining in the transverse direction (TD). Three different superplastic straining conditions were considered: 550 °C/10−2 s−1, 550 °C/10−1 s−1, and 400 °C/10−2 s−1. Microtexture data were obtained by means of computer-aided electron backscatter diffraction analysis methods. The retention of the deformation texture of the as-received material and the development of an increasingly bimodal grain boundary misorientation distribution following static annealing are consistent with the occurrence of recovery and continuous recrystallization. During superplastic straining, deformation texture components are also retained, but with a change in the grain boundary misorientation distribution toward random, indicating that grain switching occurs during grain boundary sliding (GBS). At the midlayer, however, a change from an initial texture component near the Cu-type texture component toward the Brass texture component, {011}〈211〉, was observed even as the misorientation distribution became more random. This change in texture component is associated with the occurrence of single slip during superplastic flow.  相似文献

The effect of thermal treatment on the microstructure and properties of pitches and thermal-treated, pitch-based TiB2/C composite cathodes were investigated. Thermal treatments were performed at 473 K, 523 K, 573 K, 623 K, and 673 K (200 °C, 250 °C, 300 °C, 350 °C, and 400 °C), respectively. The results show that the aromaticity of the treated pitches increases with an increasing thermal treatment temperature, and subsequently, the coking value and quinoline-insoluble (QI) content increase from 60.62 wt pct to 79.09 wt. pct and from 8.97 wt pct to 32.54 wt pct when the treatment temperature increases from 473 K to 623 K (200 °C to 350 °C). The volume fraction of coalesced mesophase in semicoke decreases with an increasing thermal treatment temperature, and after 673 K (400 °C) is reached, the coalesced mesophase is almost invisible. The bulk density and compressive strength of modified pitch-based cathodes increase with an increasing thermal treatment temperature from 2.24 g cm−3 to 2.39 g cm−3 and from 24.21 MPa to 54.85 MPa, whereas open porosity decreases from 34.62 pct to 27.06 pct. Both electrical resistivity and electrolysis expansion ratio first decrease and then increase with an increasing thermal treatment temperature, and the lowest values (45.63 μΩ m and 0.65 pct) are achieved at 573 K (300 °C). Compared with those of the parent pitch-based cathode, the properties of the modified pitch-based cathodes had improved significantly. The mechanisms of the improvements are discussed in the text.  相似文献

Effects of prior thermomechanical treatments on the superplasticity of a 25 wt pct Cr-7 wt pct Ni-3 wt pct Mo-0.14 wt pct N δ/γ duplex stainless steel have been studied by means of hot tensile testing with constant crosshead speeds. The objective is to increase the strain rate suitable for superplasticity. The strain rate is found to be markedly increased by a special prior treatment,i.e., solution treatment at temperatures in the δ single-phase region with subsequent heavy cold-rolling. In hot tensile tests at 1273 K, elongations greater than 1000 and 300 pct were observed at initial strain rates (έ) of 10−3 to 10−1 s−1 and 1 x 100 s−1, respectively. The results for strain rates 〈10−1 s−1 can be explained in terms of a structural superplastic effect due to grain refinement. In the case of έ 〉 10−1 s−1, transformation superplastic effects due to γ-phase precipitation from the σ-ferrite matrix are also important, especially in the early stages of deformation. In the equiaxedδ/γ microduplex structures during stable superplastic deformation, there exists a mixture of two different structures,i.e., dislocated and recovered/ recrystallized δ grains with a homogeneous dispersion of dislocation-free γ particles. This result shows that dynamic recrystallization ofδ grains occurs locally and intermittently due to the dispersion of relatively hardγ particles. The apparent average grain growth rate during deformation is small compared to static grain growth, because grain refinement due to dynamic recrystallization reduces the superplasticity-enhanced grain growth.  相似文献

Low-temperature superplasticity (LTSP) at 250 °C and 1 × 10−3 s−1 was observed in a 5083 Al-Mg base alloy after thermomechanical treatments (TMTs). With a higher TMT rolling strain, the fraction of high-angle grain boundaries increased, which was favorable for the further operation of grain-boundary sliding (GBS) and LTSP. The near-brass {110}〈112〉, S {123}〈634〉, and Cu {112}〈111〉 texture components in the as-thermomechanically treated specimens gradually evolved into a random orientation distribution during LTSP straining from 30 to 100 pct. Static annealing at 250 °C itself could not alter the existing texture. The grain-misorientation distribution curves also showed that, after 100 pct LTSP elongation, the misorientation angles approached the random distribution. In the latter case, the low-, medium-, and high-angle boundaries each would partition around 10, 20, and 70 pct, respectively. When the LTSP elongation was greater than 150 pct, the macrodeformation anisotropy (R) ratio would reach a plateau value of ∼0.8. During the initial stage, a group of over 60 grains proceeded cooperative grain-boundary sliding (CGBS); most individual grain boundaries started to slide at the later stage. It seems that it is the high-angle boundaries, not the special coincidence-site lattice (CSL) boundaries, which could govern the LTSP performance.  相似文献

A commercial Al-6 pct Mg-0.3 pct Sc-0.3 pct Mn alloy subjected to equal-channel angular extrusion (ECAE) at 325 °C to a total strain of about 16 resulted in an average grain size of about 1 μm. Superplastic properties and microstructural evolution of the alloy were studied in tension at strain rates ranging from 1.4 × 10−5 to 1.4 s−1 in the temperature interval 250 °C to 500 °C. It was shown that this alloy exhibited superior superplastic properties in the wide temperature range 250 °C to 500 °C at strain rates higher than 10−2 s−1. The highest elongation to failure of 2000 pct was attained at a temperature of 450 °C and an initial strain rate of 5.6 × 10−2 s−1 with the corresponding strain rate sensitivity coefficient of 0.46. An increase in temperature from 250 °C to 500 °C resulted in a shift of the optimal strain rate for superplasticity, at which highest ductility appeared, to higher strain rates. Superior superplastic properties of the commercial Al-Mg-Sc alloy are attributed to high stability of ultrafine grain structure under static annealing and superplastic deformation at T ≤ 450 °C. Two different fracture mechanisms were revealed. At temperatures higher than 300 °C or strain rates less than 10−1 s−1, failure took place in a brittle manner almost without necking, and cavitation played a major role in the failure. In contrast, at low temperatures or high strain rates, fracture occurred in a ductile manner by localized necking. The results suggest that the development of ultrafine-grained structure in the commercial Al-Mg-Sc alloy enables superplastic deformation at high strain rates and low temperatures, making the process of superplastic forming commercially attractive for the fabrication of high-volume components.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to evaluate the utility of a new processing procedure developed for Mg-based alloys in which samples are subjected to a two-step processing route of extrusion followed by equal-channel angular pressing (designated as EX-ECAP). The experiments were conducted using a Mg-0.6 wt pct Zr alloy and, for comparison purposes, samples of pure Mg. It is shown that the potential for successfully using ECAP increases in both materials when adopting the EX-ECAP procedure. For the Mg-Zr alloy, the use of EX-ECAP produces a grain size of ∼1.4 μm when the pressing is undertaken at 573 K. By contrast, using EX-ECAP with pure Mg at 573 K produces a grain size of ∼26 μm. Tensile testing of the Mg-Zr alloy at 523 and 573 K after processing by EX-ECAP revealed the occurrence of significantly enhanced ductilities with maximum elongations of ∼300 to 400 pct.  相似文献

Superplastic deformation behavior of a fine grain 5083 Al sheet (Al-4.2 pct Mg-0.7 pct Mn, trade name FORMALL 545) has been investigated under uniaxial tension over the temperature range of 500 °C to 565 °C. Strain rate sensitivity values >0.3 were observed over a strain rate range of 3 × 10−5 s−1 to 1 × 10−2 s−1, with a maximum value of 0.65 at 5 × 10−4 s−1 and 565 °C. Tensile elongations at constant strain rate exceeded 400 pct; elongations in the range of 500 to 600 pct were obtained under constant crosshead speed and variable strain rates. A short but rapid prestraining step, prior to a slower superplastic strain rate, provided enhanced tensile elongation at all temperatures. Under the two-step schedule, a maximum tensile elongation of 600 pct was obtained at 550 °C, which was regarded as the optimum superplastic temperature under this condition. Dynamic and static grain growth were examined as functions of time and strain rate. It was observed that the dynamic grain growth rate was appreciably higher than the static growth rate and that the dynamic growth rate based on time was more rapid at the higher strain rate. Cavitation occurred during superplastic flow in this alloy and was a strong function of strain rate and temperature. The degree of cavitation was minimized by superimposition of a 5.5 MPa hydrostatic pressure during deformation, which produced a tensile elongation of 671 pct at 525 °C. R. Superplastic elongations in excess of 400 pct have been observed in tension testing at 573 K (300 °C) and strain rate έ= 2 × 10-3 s-1 for a thermomechanically processed Al-10.2 pct Mg-0.52 pct Mn alloy. The thermomechanical processing consists of solution treatment and hot working, followed by extensive warm rolling at 573 K (300 °C), a temperature below the solvus for Mg in the alloy. This processing results in a fine subgrain structure in conjunction with refined and homogeneously distributed β(Al8Mg5) and MnAl6 precipitates. This structure does not statically recrystallize when annealed at 573 K (300 °C) but appears to recrystallize continuously during deformation at such a temperature and the resulting fine grain structure deforms with minimal cavitation. At temperatures above the Mg-solvus,e.g., 673 K (400 °C), recrystallization and growth occur readily resulting in rela tively coarser structures which deform superplastically but with extensive grain boundary sliding and cavitation. The 8090 Al-Li alloys, after a special thermomechanical process (TMP), exhibited low-temperature superplasticity (LTSP) from 350 °C to 450 °C and behaved differently from the conventional high-temperature superplasticity (HTSP). The LTSP sheets after ~700 pct elongation at 350 °C and 8 × 10−4 s−1 still possessed fine “(sub)grains” 3.7 μm in size and narrow surface Li-depletion zones 11 μm in width, resulting in a post-SP T6 strength of ~500 MPa, significantly higher than that of the 8090 alloys tested at normal superplastic temperature of 525 °C or above. Examination from the movement of surface marker lines in LTSP samples confirmed the role of grain boundary sliding (GBS), coupled with grain rotation and migration. During the initial stage (<150 pct), GBS along certain higher-angled boundaries was proceeded along a plane ±45 deg with respect to the sample surface. With increasing straining, sliding between individual grains or grain groups was observed on other planes, forming a zigzag morphology. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations revealed appreciable dislocation activities, suggesting the involvement of dislocation creep. The tensile behavior and deformation mechanisms of the HTSP and LTSP sheets were investigated and analyzed over the strain rates range 10−5 to 10−2 s−1. The strain-rate sensitivity(m value) for the LTSP and HTSP materials was found to be ~0.33 and 0.50, respectively. The activation energy was extracted to be 92 kJ/mole for the LTSP sheets and to be 141 kJ/mole for the HTSP sheets. Based upon these results, the primary deformation and accommodation mechanisms for the HTSP and LTSP sheets are GBS and dislocation creep, respectively.  相似文献
