Psychoanalytic Psychology, the official publication of the Division of Psychoanalysis of the American Psychological Association (Division 39), begins in an era in which psychoanalysis, based in psychology, can continue to flourish, informed by its founder's spirit of pursuing questions wherever they lead. Psychoanalytic Psychology will strive to represent the broad scope of inquiry that psychoanalysis makes possible. Its primary goal will be to foster basic research and the integration of clinical and research findings. The contents of this first issue have been assembled by invitation to reflect the broad scope of current psychoanalytic thought about psychological issues from birth to death. Surveyed 143 consulting psychologists (aged 31–85 yrs) who are members of the American Psychological Association's Division of Consulting Psychology to obtain an occupational analysis of consulting psychology. Results suggest that consulting psychologists see themselves as primarily serving individual and organization consultees in business/industrial and hospital settings. The skill most important to professional identity is general problem solving. When the graduates of the de facto specialties were examined for consultation education and practice differences, few differences emerged, indicating that no recognized specialty better trains consultants. Results are discussed in light of the need for specific course work, supervised experiences, and professional development in consulting. Used presentations at Division 17 programs of the American Psychological Association conventions, affiliations of authors of articles in the Journal of Counseling Psychology and The Counseling Psychologist, and Division 17 leaders to determine that the University of Maryland (College Park), Ohio State University, and the University of Iowa were the most highly active institutions in counseling psychology over the period 1980–1983. The size of the faculty and faculty rewards and pressures appear to be factors in determining ratings. Counseling psychologists in nonacademic settings are disadvantaged in making research contributions by these factors. Since most current counseling and clinical psychology graduate students are trained to be practitioners, it is suggested that research and professional leadership dimensions should be measured on their value to practitioners. It is further suggested that quality of supervision, knowledge of practitioner skills, and capacity to meet credentialing and/or licensing requirements should be included in evaluating graduate education in counseling psychology.
