Kraft lignin (KL), a phenolic polymer formed during the kraft pulping process, is presently burned as a low value fuel. For decades, researchers have attempted to use KL as an inexpensive substitute for phenol in phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resins, but no one has produced a commercially satisfactory KL-PF resin. This paper reviews the literature on the present status of KL-PF adhesives and makes recommendations on needed research.
Kraft lignin solutions are complex mixtures which have broad molecular weight distributions, high viscosities, relatively low reactivities, and low solubilities. Attempts to overcome these inherent problems include methylolation of lignin to improve reactivity, the use of co-solvents to improve solubility, and ultrafiltration to yield more homogeneous molecular weight fractions. Future research efforts need to focus on understanding the fundamental chemical and physical properties of kraft lignin and its resins. The search for an economic lignin-based wood adhesive should continue. 相似文献

Fracture and fatigue response of a self-healing epoxy adhesive 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A self-healing epoxy adhesive for bonding steel substrates is demonstrated using encapsulated dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) monomer and bis(tricyclohexylphosphine)benzylidine ruthenium (IV) dichloride (Grubbs’ first generation) catalyst particles dispersed in a thin epoxy matrix. Both quasi-static fracture and fatigue performance are evaluated using the width-tapered-double-cantilever-beam specimen geometry. Recovery of 56% of the original fracture toughness under quasi-static fracture conditions occurs after 24 h healing at room temperature conditions. Complete crack arrest is demonstrated for fatigue test conditions that render neat resin and control samples failed. Inspection of fracture surfaces by electron microscopy reveals evidence of polymerized DCPD after healing. These results are the first mechanical assessment of self-healing for thin (ca. 360 μm) films typical of adhesives applications. 相似文献

The influence of glutaraldehyde blend on the properties of a commercially available resin in moist conditions was investigated. A UF resin with very low water resistance was blended with glutaraldehyde prior to the thermosetting step and the adhesive performance of the modified adhesive systems was studied. Experiments were performed on birch two-layer co-oriented plywood. It was shown that blending a commercial glue-mix as sold with glutaraldehyde can be an effective way to improve water resistance of the glue without introducing additional -NH2 moiety. It was also found that glutaraldehyde does not deteriorate properties of the glue in the dry state, while glue susceptibility to boiling water is markedly reduced. 相似文献
