To improve the tribological properties of basalt‐fabric‐reinforced phenolic composites, solid lubricants of MoS2 and graphite were incorporated, and the tribological properties of the resulting basalt‐fabric composites were investigated on a model ring‐on‐block test rig under dry sliding conditions. The effects of the filler content, load, and sliding time on the tribological behavior of the basalt‐fabric composites were systematically examined. The morphologies of the worn surfaces and transfer films formed on the counterpart steel rings were analyzed by means of scanning electron microscopy. The experimental results reveal that the incorporation of MoS2 significantly decreased the friction coefficient, whereas the inclusion of graphite improved the wear resistance remarkably. The results also indicate that the filled basalt‐fabric composites seemed to be more suitable for friction materials serving under higher loads. The transfer films formed on the counterpart surfaces during the friction process made contributions to the reduction of the friction coefficient and wear rate of the basalt‐fabric composites. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The friction and wear behavior of Kevlar fabric composites reinforced by PTFE or graphite powders was investigated using a Xuanwu‐III friction and wear tester at dry sliding condition, with the unfilled Kevlar fabric composite as a reference. The worn surfaces were analyzed by means of scanning electron microscope, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was found that PTFE or graphite as fillers could significantly improve the tribological behavior of the Kevlar fabric composites, and the Kevlar fabric composites filled with 20% PTFE exhibited the best antiwear and antifriction ability among all evaluated cases. The transfer films established with two lubricants in sliding wear of composites against metallic counterparts made contributions to reducing friction coefficient and wear rate of Kevlar fabric composites. In particular, FeF2 generated in the sliding of Kevlar fabric composites filled with PTFE against counterpart pin improved the bonding strength between the transfer film and counterpart surface, which accounted for the lowest friction coefficient and wear rate of the Kevlar fabric composites filled with PTFE measured in the testing. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The objectives of this research article is to evaluate the mechanical and tribological properties of glass‐fiber‐reinforced epoxy (G–E) composites with and without graphite particulate filler. The laminates were fabricated by a dry hand layup technique. The mechanical properties, including tensile strength, tensile modulus, elongation at break, and surface hardness, were investigated in accordance with ASTM standards. From the experimental investigation, we found that the tensile strength and dimensional stability of the G–E composite increased with increasing graphite content. The effect of filler content (0–7.5 wt %) and sliding distance on the friction and wear behavior of the graphite‐filled G–E composite systems were studied. Also, conventional weighing, determination of the coefficient of friction, and examination of the worn surface morphological features by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were done. A marginal increase in the coefficient of friction with sliding distance for the unfilled composites was noticed, but a slight reduction was noticed for the graphite‐filled composites. The 7.5% graphite‐filled G–E composite showed a lower friction coefficient for the sliding distances used. The wear loss of the composites decreased with increasing weight fraction of graphite filler and increased with increasing sliding distance. Failure mechanisms of the worn surfaces of the filled composites were established with SEM. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 103: 2472–2480, 2007  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Polymer/multi‐walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composites are one of the most promising alternatives to conventional polymer composites filled with micrometre‐sized fillers. This approach can also be applied for the improvement of mechanical properties and thermal stability of biodegradable aliphatic polyesters, such as poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA), which have been receiving increasing attention due to environmental concerns. Thermal degradation behaviour provides useful information for the determination of the optimum processing conditions and for identification of potential applications of final products. RESULTS: The PLLA/MWCNT composites investigated showed a higher thermal degradation peak temperature and onset temperature of degradation along with a higher amount of residue at the completion of degradation than neat PLLA. Moreover, PLLA/MWCNT composites with a greater MWCNT content showed higher activation energy of thermal degradation than those with a lower MWCNT loading, which confirmed the positive effect of MWCNT incorporation on the enhancement of PLLA thermal stability. CONCLUSION: This study explored the thermal degradation behaviour of PLLA/MWCNT composites by observing the weight loss, molecular weight and mechanical properties during non‐isothermal and isothermal degradation. The incorporation of MWCNTs into the PLLA matrix enhanced considerably the mechanical properties and thermal stability. Copyright © 2009 Society of Chemical Industry

The flake graphite, polytetrafluoroethylene, and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) filled phenolic resin‐based composites were prepared by hot press molding. The thermal, mechanical, and tribological properties of composites were studied systematically. The morphologies of the worn surfaces and the change of chemical compositions during the sliding process of the composites were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, respectively. It was found that the heat‐resisting performance and the hardness of the composites are less affected by solid lubricants, while the solid lubricants did harm to the flexural strength of the composites. The friction and wear behaviors of composites highly depended on the volume fractions of solid lubricants and the sliding conditions. The wear resistance increases and the coefficient of friction decreases when the filler load increases. In addition, the appropriate content of solid lubricants is beneficial to reducing the sensitivities of the composites to load and sliding speed. POLYM.

The effect of various fillers on the mechanical, barrier, and flammability properties of polypropylene (PP) was studied. PP was filled with 4 wt% of nano‐sized calcium carbonate, titanium dioxide, organoclay, and multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT). For comparison, micron‐sized calcium carbonate was also studied. Two‐step masterbatch dilution approach of the composites suggested no or only minor improvements in Young's modulus and tensile yield strength, whereas their ductility decreased compared to coupling agent‐modified PP matrix. The water vapor transmission results of filled films showed increased permeability compared to their coupling agent‐modified counterpart. Oxygen permeability, however, decreased for the composites. The MWCNT‐filled matrix showed the highest barrier and fire performance, attributed mainly to its higher filler volume content, but also other reasons such as the effect of filler dispersion, composite's thermal stability, and polymer crystallinity were discussed.POLYM. This is a comparative study between ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) reinforced with micro‐ and nano‐hydroxyapatite (HA) under different filler content. The micro‐ and nano‐HA/UHMWPE composites were prepared by hot‐pressing method, and then compression strength, ball indentation hardness, creep resistance, friction, and wear properties were investigated. To explore mechanisms of these properties, differential scanning calorimetry, infrared spectrum, wettability, and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectrometry analysis were carried out on the samples. The results demonstrated that UHMWPE reinforced with micro‐ and nano‐HA would improve the ball indentation hardness, compression strength, creep resistance, wettability, and wear behavior. The mechanical properties for both micro‐ and nano‐HA/UHMWPE composites were comparable with pure UHMWPE. The mechanical properties of nano‐HA/UHMWPE composites are better compared with micro‐HA/UHMWPE composites and pure UHMWPE. The optimum filler quantity of micro‐ and nano‐HA/UHMWPE composites is found to be at 15 wt % and 10 wt %, separately. The micro‐ and nano‐HA/UHMWPE composites exhibit a low friction coefficient and good wear resistance at this content. The worn surface of HA/UHMWPE composites shows the wear mechanisms changed from furrow and scratch to surface rupture and delamination when the weight percent of micro‐ and nano‐HA exceed 15 wt % and 10 wt %. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effects of various filler concentrations (0.1, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, and 3 wt %) on the tribological and mechanical properties of carbon‐nanofiber (CNF)‐filled polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) composites were studied. Moreover, the influence of various loads (50, 100, 150, and 200 N) and sliding velocities (0.692 and 1.39 m/s) on the friction and wear behaviors of the PTFE composites was investigated. The results showed that the friction coefficients of the PTFE composites decreased initially up to a 0.5 wt % filler concentration and then increased, whereas the antiwear properties of the PTFE composites increased by 1–2 orders of magnitude in comparison with those of pure PTFE. The composite with a 2 wt % filler concentration had the best antiwear properties under all friction conditions. The friction coefficients of the CNF/PTFE composites decreased with increases in the load and sliding velocity, whereas the wear volume loss of the PTFE composites increased. At the same time, the results also indicated that the mechanical properties of the PTFE composites increased first up to a 1 wt % filler concentration and then decreased as the filler concentration was increased above 1 wt %. In comparison with pure PTFE, the impact strength, tensile strength, and elongation to break of the PTFE composites increased by 40, 20, and 70%, respectively, at a 1 wt % filler concentration. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Five kinds of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)‐based composites, pure PTFE, PTFE + 30(v)% MoS2, PTFE + 30(v)% PbS, PTFE + 30(v)% CuS, and PTFE + 30(v)% graphite (GR) composites, were first prepared. Then the friction and wear properties of these PTFE composites, sliding against GCr15‐bearing steel under both dry and liquid paraffin‐lubricated conditions, were studied by using an MHK‐500 ring‐on‐block wear tester. Finally, the worn surfaces and the transfer films of the PTFE composites formed on the surface of GCr15 bearing steel were investigated by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and an optical microscope, respectively. Experimental results show that filling with MoS2, PbS, CuS, or graphite to PTFE can reduce the wear of the PTFE composites by two orders of magnitude compared to that of pure PTFE under dry friction conditions. However, the friction and wear‐reducing properties of these PTFE composites can be greatly improved by lubrication with liquid paraffin. Investigations of transfer films show that MoS2, PbS, CuS, and graphite promote the transfer of the PTFE composites onto the surface of GCr15‐bearing steel under dry friction conditions, but the transfer of the PTFE composites onto the surface of GCr15‐bearing steel can be greatly reduced by lubrication with liquid paraffin. SEM examinations of worn surfaces show that with lubrication of liquid paraffin, the creation and development of the cracks occurred on the worn surfaces of the PTFE composites under load, which reduces the load‐supporting capacity of the PTFE composites. This would lead to the deterioration of the friction and wear properties of the PTFE composites under higher loads (>600N). © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 72: 751–761, 1999  相似文献

The application of Cu-graphite composites in the field of friction materials is limited by the poor wettability between Cu and graphite and weakened mechanical properties. In this work, in-situ TiC layers were generated by interfacial resistance sintering with direct current to manipulate the interfacial bonding of the composites and enhance their comprehensive properties. The Ti added to the composites would react with graphite at the interface to generate TiC layers and form strong Cu–TiC-graphite interfaces due to interfacial reactions. When the added Ti content is 6 wt%, the composite demonstrates the most excellent mechanical properties and tribological characteristics, i.e., yield strength (168 MPa) and wear rate (2.7 × 10−10 m2/N) are 93.1% higher and 29.7% lower than those of the Cu-graphite composite without Ti addition, respectively. The dense TiC layer induces the strengthening of the Cu matrix and serves as the reinforcing phase to optimize the interfacial bonding and stress transfer, which not only greatly enhances the mechanical properties of the composite but also enables the composite to take full advantage of the hard TiC and graphite phases to obtain stable friction coefficient and low wear rate. This work provides a simpler technique to prepare modified Cu-graphite composites with excellent performance and contributes to the in-depth understanding of the enhancement mechanism of hard ceramic layers on the mechanical and tribological properties of composites.  相似文献

As self‐lubricating bearing liner materials, tribological properties of milled pitch‐based carbon fibers (CFs) modified polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)/Kevlar fabric composites were investigated, and the microscopic morphology of worn surface was studied. The results show that the appropriate incorporation of CFs can obviously reduce the wear rate of the fabric composite with almost unchanging friction coefficient. The wear rates of 5 wt % CF‐filled PTFE/Kevlar fabric composites are decreased by 30% and 48% for two kinds of composites made with fibers from different producers compared with unfilled fabric composites. Scanning electron microscopy observations show that the appropriate incorporation of CFs obviously improves the interfacial bonding and reduces pull‐out and fracture of Kevlar fiber. Meanwhile, the introduction of CFs at proper fraction is helpful to form smooth and continuous transfer film on the surface of metal counterpart. The improving mechanism of the CF is attributed to increasing mechanical strength, thermal conductivity and self‐lubricating effects. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. The friction and wear characteristics of ZnO‐ or montmorillonite‐nanoparticle‐filled Kevlar fabric composites with different filler proportions when sliding against stainless steel pins under dry friction conditions were studied, with unfilled Kevlar fabric composites used as references. The worn surface and transfer film of Kevlar fabric composites were then examined with a scanning electron microscope. It was found that ZnO and montmorillonite as fillers could improve the tribological behavior of the Kevlar fabric composites with various applied loads, and the best antiwear property was obtained with the composites containing 5 wt % ZnO or montmorillonite. This indicated that these nanoparticles could prevent the destruction of Kevlar fabric composites during the friction process. The transfer film established by these nanoparticles during the sliding wear of the composites against their metallic counterpart made contributions to reducing the friction coefficient and wear rate of the Kevlar fabric composites measured in the test. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effect of the melt‐compounding conditions with the use of a corotating intermeshing twin‐screw extruder and of the nanotube content on the morphology and the mechanical and rheological properties of nylon 6/multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composites was investigated. The melt‐compounding conditions affected the morphology, but the variations in the morphology did not necessarily result in substantial variations in the mechanical and rheological properties. The mass throughput had the strongest influence on the mechanical properties, whereas the MWCNT feeding substantially affected the rheology. The increase in the MWCNT volume content from 0.0 to 3.5 vol % led to an increase in the Young's modulus, whereas the tensile strength, elongation at break, and notched impact strength exhibited maximum values around 0.5 to 1.0 vol %. With increasing MWCNT volume contents, higher complex viscosities and storage and loss moduli and a lower loss factor compared to neat nylon 6 were observed. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polyimide composites reinforced with short‐cut fibers such as carbon, glass, and quartz fibers were fabricated by the polymerization of monomer reactants process. The mechanical properties of the composites with different fiber contents were evaluated. The friction and wear properties of the polyimide and its composites were investigated under dry‐sliding and water‐lubricated conditions. The results indicated that the short‐carbon‐fiber‐reinforced polyimide composites had better tensile and flexural strengths and improved tribological properties in comparison with glass‐fiber‐ and quartz‐fiber‐reinforced polyimide composites. The incorporation of short carbon fibers into the polyimide contributed to decreases in the friction coefficient and wear rate under both dry and water‐lubricated conditions and especially under water lubrication because of the boundary lubrication effect of water. The polyimide and its composites were characterized by plastic deformation, microcracking, and spalling under both dry and water‐lubricated conditions, which were significantly abated under the water‐lubricated condition. The glass and quartz fibers were easily abraded and broken; the broken fibers transferred to the mating metal surface and increased the surface roughness of mating stainless steel, which led to the wear rate increasing for the glass‐fiber‐ and quartz‐fiber‐reinforced polyimide composites. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In order to improve output properties and anti‐irradiation capability of ultrasonic motors (USMs), which are driven by friction forces of friction material between the stator and rotor, a type of friction material is fabricated by composite materials consist of carbon fiber (CF) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The effects of different contents of CF on the mechanical and tribological properties of PVDF‐based friction materials are studied, and the mechanical features of the relative USMs are measured. Further, the worn surface morphology of PVDF composites is observed by means of scanning electron microscope and the wear mechanisms are also discussed. In addition, the anti‐irradiation capability of the type of friction materials is measured by the γ‐ray irradiation at room temperature environment with the total radiation dose of 4.0X rad (Si). The experimental results show that the incorporation of CF into PVDF can effectively improve the friction and wear properties of the friction materials, and the mechanical properties of TRUM‐60 used by relative PVDF composites are also increased with the increase of CF. For TRUM‐60, both the no‐load speed and holding torque of the USMs were high, and the wear of friction material was lowest, when the CF content is 15 wt%. The experiment results also show that this PVDF‐based friction material has a good anti‐irradiation property. Therefore, the composite materials consist of CF and PVDF are beneficial for the applications in USMs, especially for some radiation environment. POLYM. Self‐lubricating microcapsules containing methyl silicone oil as core materials, were prepared with poly(melamine‐formaldehyde) as shell material by in situ polymerization method. Combining with synergistic effect of the short carbon fibers (SCFs) which were systematically treated by liquid‐phase oxidation and chemical grafting, they were simultaneously adopted as reinforcing additives to improve the tribological and mechanical properties of polyurethane materials. The tribological behaviors and mechanical properties of the polyurethane composites have been investigated by a block‐on‐ring wear tester and electronic universal testing machine, respectively. The results indicate that the friction coefficient and wear rate of polyurethane composites without SCFs significantly decreased with increased self‐lubricating microcapsule concentration from 2.5 to 10 wt % due to the release of methyl silicone oil; meanwhile, the polyurethane composites filled with 10 wt % microcapsule and 15 wt % SCFs not only exhibited the lowest friction and wear behaviors, but also improved mechanical strength and thermal stability of polyurethane composites.
