Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and positron annihilation lifetime measurements have been carried out to study the effect of the compatibilizer maleic anhydride grafted ethylene propylene copolymer (EPM‐g‐MA) in poly trimethylene terephthalate and ethylene propylene diene monomer (PTT/EPDM) immiscible blends. The DSC results for the blends of 50/50 and 30/70 compositions show two clear glass transition temperatures, indicating that the blends are two‐phase systems. With the addition of compatibilizer, the separation between the two glass transitions decreased, suggesting an increased interaction between the blend components with compatibilizer. At 5 wt % of compatibilizer, the separation between the Tgs reduced in both 50/50 and 30/70 blends. The positron results for the blends without compatibilizer showed an increase in relative fractional free volume, as the EPDM content in the blend is increased. This suggests the coalescence of free volume of EPDM with the free volumes of PTT due to phase separation. However, the effect of compatibilizer in the blends was clearly seen with the observed minimum in free volume parameters at 5% of the compatibilizer, further suggesting that this percent of compatibilizer seems to be the optimum value for these blends. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polyamide 6/ethylene–propylene–diene metallocene terpolymer/(ethylene–propylene–diene copolymer)‐graft‐(maleic anhydride) blends with clay (3 and 5 wt % depending on the formulation), different clays (montmorillonite and sepiolite) and different surface functionalization (ammonium salts and silanes) were studied to analyze the effect of the shape of clay and type of modifier on their properties. The results have shown that sepiolite has higher influence on the morphology and on the mechanical properties than montmorillonite. In that sense, blends with 3 wt % of sepiolite have reached the best balanced properties, i.e., tensile modulus and impact strength, than their homologous with montmorillonite. Furthermore, the blends with 3 wt % of sepiolite have reached the highest mechanical properties compared with blends with higher montmorillonite content. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. BACKGROUND: Polyamides, or nylons, are an attractive class of engineering polymers due to their excellent strength and stiffness, low friction and chemical and wear resistance. However, they are highly notch‐sensitive, i.e. they are often ductile in the un‐notched state, but fail in a brittle manner when notched. A super‐tough nylon 1212 was prepared by blending nylon 1212 with ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) grafted with maleic anhydride (MA). The morphologies of Izod impact fracture surfaces as well as xylene‐etched surfaces of the nylon were thoroughly investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). RESULTS: The fracture morphology and the impact strength of the nylon 1212 blends are very well correlated. The impact fracture surface of the blends exhibits certain characteristic features, such as the observation of fiber‐like sticks when etched with boiling xylene, formed during the impact fracture process. SEM images of xylene‐etched surfaces as well as the results of X‐ray energy dispersive spectroscopy suggest that the successful toughening of nylon 1212 with EPDM‐graft‐MA is due to the reaction between the anhydride of EPDM‐graft‐MA and the amine end‐groups of nylon 1212, leading to the formation of a homogenous graft copolymer system. CONCLUSION: The copolymer system, acting as a surfactant, reduces the interfacial tension between nylon 1212 and EPDM‐graft‐MA and produces a highly compatible super‐tough nylon 1212. BACKGROUND: Both exfoliated and toughened polypropylene‐blend‐montmorillonite (PP/MMT) nanocomposites were prepared by melt extrusion in a twin‐screw extruder. Special attention was paid to the enhancement of clay exfoliation and toughness properties of PP by the introduction of a rubber in the form of compatibilizer toughener: ethylene propylene diene‐based rubber grafted with maleic anhydride (EPDM‐g‐MA). RESULTS: The resultant nanocomposites were characterized using X‐ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis and Izod impact testing methods. It was found that the desired exfoliated nanocomposite structure could be achieved for all compatibilizer to organoclay ratios as well as clay loadings. Moreover, a mechanism involving a decreased size of rubber domains surrounded with nanolayers as well as exfoliation of the nanolayers in the PP matrix was found to be responsible for a dramatic increase in impact resistance of the nanocomposites. CONCLUSION: Improved thermal and dynamic mechanical properties of the resultant nanocomposites promise to open the way for highly toughened super PPs via nanocomposite assemblies even with very low degrees of loading. Nanocomposite vulcanizates based on ethylene–propylene–diene monomer rubber (EPDM) and organically modified montmorillonite with improved mechanical and barrier properties were prepared via a melt‐mixing process in the presence of maleic anhydride grafted ethylene–propylene–diene monomer rubber (EPDM‐g‐MAH) as an interfacial compatibilizer. The effects of the EPDM Mooney viscosity as the matrix and also the compatibilizer molecular weight and its maleation degree on the developed microstructure were also studied. The annealing of the vulcanized nanocomposites based on a low‐Mooney‐viscosity EPDM matrix and low‐Mooney‐viscosity EPDM‐g‐MAH enhanced the flocculation of the dispersed clay platelets; this implied that the flocculated structure for the clay nanolayers was more thermodynamically preferred in these nanocomposites. This was verified by the decrease in the oxygen permeability of the nanocomposite vulcanizates with increasing annealing time. The tendency of the clay nanosilicate layers to flocculate within the matrix of EPDM was found to be influenced by the clay volume fraction, the maleation degree, and also, the Mooney viscosity of the compatibilizer. Interfacially compatibilized nanocomposites based on high‐molecular‐weight EPDM exhibited a more disordered dispersion of the clay nanolayers, with a broadened relaxation time spectra; this was attributed to the higher shearing subjected to the mix during the melt‐blending process. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The compatibility of nylon 11/polyethylene (PE) alloys on addition of reactive maleated ethylene‐propylene‐diene copolymer (EPDM‐graft‐MAH) was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, morphological observations and rheology. The decrease in the differential volume of the melting temperature of nylon 11 and PE with increasing compatibilizer suggests that the addition of EPDM‐graft‐MAH affects the crystalline behavior of nylon 11 and PE. The decreased particle size of the dispersed phase also confirmed the improvement in the compatibility. The rheological behavior revealed that the addition of the compatibilizer enhanced the apparent viscosity of the melting blends, which resulted from the increasing interaction between the chains due to the improvement in compatibility of nylon 11 and PE. In order to better understand the toughening mechanism in polyoxymethylene (POM)/thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) blends and obtain ‘super‐toughened’ POM, we carried out an investigation on the notched impact strength, fractured surface, inter‐particle distance and spherulite size of POM as a function of the TPU content. A compatibilizer, namely polystyrene‐block‐poly(ethylene–butylene)‐block‐polystyrene, grafted with maleic anhydride (SEBS‐graft‐MA), was used to enhance the interfacial interaction between the POM and TPU. The impact strength is found to increase in two steps as a function of TPU content, namely a linear increase at the very beginning, and then a jump of impact strength is seen when the TPU content is larger than 30 wt%. A ‘supertough behavior’ is not observed for POM/TPU blends at room temperature, but can be achieved after adding 5 wt% of SEBS‐graft‐MA as the compatibilizer. The impact strength was found to depend not only on the interparticle distance but also on the interfacial interactions between POM and TPU. The dependence of impact strength on crystal size is considered for the first time, and a single curve is constructed, regardless of the composition and interfacial interactions. Our results indicate that the crystal size of POM indeed plays a role in determining the toughness, and has to be considered when discussing the toughening mechanism. The comparison of the mechanical properties between poly(propylene)/ethylene‐propylene‐diene monomer elastomer (PP/EPDM) and poly(propylene)/maleic anhydride‐g‐ethylene‐propylene‐diene monomer [PP/MEPDM (MAH‐g‐EPDM)] showed that the latter blend has noticeably higher Izod impact strength but lower Young's modulus than the former one. Phase morphology of the two blends was examined by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, indicating that the miscibility of PP/MEPDM was inferior to PP/EPDM. The poor miscibility of PP/MEPDM degrades the nucleation effectiveness of the elastomer on PP. The observations of the impact fracture mode of the two blends and the dispersion state of the elastomers, determined by scanning electron microscopy, showed that PP/EPDM fractured in a brittle mode, whereas PP/MEPDM in a ductile one, and that a finer dispersion of MEPDM was found in the blend PP/MEPDM. These observations indicate that the difference in the dispersion state of elastomer between PP/EPDM and PP/MEPDM results in different fracture modes, and thereby affects the toughness of the two blends. The finer dispersion of MEPDM in the blend of PP/MEPDM was attributed to the part cross‐linking of MEPDM resulting from the grafting reaction of EPDM with maleic anhydride (MAH) in the presence of dicumyl peroxide (DCP). © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Simple blends with different viscosity ratios of the components as well as compatibilized blends varying both in type and content of the compatibilizers were used to study the relation between the interfacial tension and the dispersed‐phase particle size for PP/PA6 (80/20 wt %) blends in this work. Four compatibilizing systems including poly(ethylene‐co‐methacrylic acid) ionomers, a maleic anhydride‐grafted propylene copolymer, maleic anhydride‐grafted polypropylene, and a maleic anhydride‐grafted styrene ethylene butylene copolymer were used. For blends prepared in an internal mixer, a power‐law relation was found between the capillary number and the torque ratio of the blends' components. This relation was used to estimate the interfacial tension for the compatibilized blends. The relation between the steady‐state torque of the blends as a measure of viscosity and the estimated values of interfacial tension were also investigated. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Synthesis and characterization of a novel toughener–compatibilizer for polypropylene (PP)–montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites were conducted to provide enhanced mechanical and thermal properties. Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) blocks were synthetically grafted onto maleic anhydride‐grafted polystyrene‐block‐poly(ethylene/butylene)‐block‐polystyrene (SEBS‐g‐MA). Special attention was paid to emphasize the effect of PEO‐grafted SEBS (SEBS‐g‐PEO) against SEBS‐g‐MA on morphology, static/dynamic mechanical properties and surface hydrophilicity of the resultant blends and nanocomposites. It was found that the silicate layers of neat MMT are well separated by PEO chains chemically bonded to nonpolar SEBS polymer without needing any organophilic modification of the clay as confirmed by X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy analyses. From scanning electron microscopy analyses, elastomeric domains interacting with MMT layers via PEO sites were found to be distributed in the PP matrix with higher number and smaller sizes than the corresponding blend. As a benefit of PEO grafting, SEBS‐g‐PEO‐containing nanocomposite exhibited not only higher toughness/impact strength but also increased creep recovery, as compared to corresponding SEBS‐g‐MA‐containing nanocomposite and neat PP. The damping parameter of the same nanocomposite was also found to be high in a broad range of temperatures as another advantage of the SEBS‐g‐PEO toughener–compatibilizer. The water contact angles of the blends and nanocomposites were found to be lower than that of neat hydrophobic PP which is desirable for finishing processes such as dyeing and coating. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

We report the compatibility effect on a recycled polypropylene/nylon (75/25) blend processed with reactive copolymers on the basis of morphological, mechanical, and rheological characteristics. Via a scanning electron microscopy investigation, we found improved surface morphologies with regular and fine domains in a recycled polypropylene/nylon (75/25) blend compatibilized with copolymers containing maleic anhydride as a reactive functional group [styrene–(ethylene/butylene)–styrene‐graft‐maleic anhydride copolymer and polypropylene‐graft‐maleic anhydride]. Large increases in both the mechanical and rheological properties with the addition of the styrene–(ethylene/butylene)–styrene‐graft‐maleic anhydride copolymer could be interpreted with respect to a specific structure at the interface, showing a strong interfacial adhesion between recycled polypropylene and nylon. To confirm the existence of this structure, we used various dynamic rheological parameters: the Cox–Merz rule, storage modulus, and phase angle. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effects of maleic anhydride modified ethylene–propylene–diene rubber (EPDMMA) and maleic anhydride modified ethylene–vinyl acetate (EVAMA) on the compatibilization of nitrile rubber (NBR)/ethylene–propylene–diene rubber (70:30 w/w) blends vulcanized with a sulfur system were investigated. The presence of EPDMMA and EVAMA resulted in improvements of the tensile properties, whereas no substantial change was detected in the degree of crosslinking. The blend systems were also analyzed with scanning electron microscopy and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. The presence of EVAMA resulted in a blend with a more homogeneous morphology. The compatibilizing effect of this functional copolymer was also detected with dynamic mechanical analysis. A shift of the glass‐transition temperature of the NBR phase toward lower values was observed. The presence of EPDMMA and EVAMA also increased the thermal stability, as indicated by an improvement in the retention of the mechanical properties after aging in an air‐circulating oven. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polyamide 66–thermal liquid crystalline polymer (PA66/TLCP) composites containing 10 wt% TLCP was compatibilized by ethylene–propylene–diene‐grafted maleic anhydride terpolymer (MAH‐g‐EPDM). The blending was performed on a twin‐screw extrusion, followed by an injection molding. The rheological, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), thermal, mechanical properties, as well as the morphology and FTIR spectra, of the blends were investigated and discussed. Rheological, DMA, and FTIR spectra results showed that MAH‐g‐EPDM is an effective compatibilizer for PA66/TLCP blends. The mechanical test indicated that the tensile strength, tensile elongation, and the bending strength of the blends were improved with the increase of the content of MAH‐g‐EPDM, which implied that the blends probably have a great frictional shear force, resulting from strong adhesion at the interface between the matrix and the dispersion phase; while the bending modulus was weakened with the increase of MAH‐g‐EPDM content, which is attributed to the development of the crystalline phase of PA66 hampered by adding MAH‐g‐EPDM. Blends of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) and polycarbonate (PC) with and without a compatibilizer were prepared using a Brabender Haake Rheocord at 260°C and 32 rpm. Maleic anhydride grafted styrene‐ethylene/butylene‐styrene (SEBS‐g‐MAH) and maleic anhydride grafted ethylene–propylene diene (EPDM‐g‐MAH) were chosen as compatibilizers and their proportion was set to 5, 10, and 15 wt%, respectively. The thermal properties and crystallization behavior were determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide angle X‐ray scattering (WAXS). Micromechanical properties were also investigated using a Vickers microindentation tester. The DSC analysis indicates that the melting temperature of iPP in the all the blends, compatibilized and uncompatibilized ones, remains constant and is almost the same as those of the pure component. On the other hand, it is shown that the degree of crystallinity of iPP in the blends calculated by DSC and WAXS is dependent of the composition of the polymeric mixture. However the hardness (H) decreases with increasing PC content until the composition of iPP/PC (75/25) is reached, whereas for larger PC content values, H increases. The same trend was obtained with the addition of both compatibilizers. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 56:1138–1145, 2016. © 2016 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

The objective of this work is to study the properties of blends that could result from the recycling of end-of-life vehicles (ELV). While ethylene propylene rubber (EPR) and ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) have been used extensively as elastomeric additives in poly(propylene) (PP), they can be substituted by ethylene-1-octene copolymer (EOC). As a consequence, the matter resulting from the sorting of ELV might be more complex and made of PP, EPR, and EOC. The effect of incorporating EOC [that is a polyethylene elastomer (PEE)] and maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MAH) on the rheological, thermal, and morphological properties of PP/EPR blends has been investigated. Blends of various compositions (with and without compatibilizer) were prepared using a corotating twin-screw extruder. The results were compared to the ones presented by a commercial (PP/EPR) blend. The EPR phase is dispersed in the form of spherical particles in (PP/EPR). The EOC phase is dispersed in the form of aggregated particles. Dynamic viscoelastic and differential scanning calorimetry properties of (PP/EPR)/EOC blends shows the incompatibility of the components even in presence of PP-g-MAH copolymer. POLYM. ENG. Blends of polycarbonate (PC) and acrylonitrile ‐ ethylene‐propylene‐diene‐styrene (AES) were reactive compatibilized by styrene‐maleic anhydride copolymers (SMA). The changes in phase morphology and interfacial characteristics of the blends as a function of maleic anhydride content of SMA and the concentration of compatibilizer have been systematic studied. The occurrence of reaction between the terminal hydroxyl groups of PC and the maleic anhydride (MA) of compatibilizer was confirmed by fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. A glass transition temperature (Tg) with an intermediate value between Tg(AES) and Tg(PC) was found on differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) curves of PC/AES blends compatibilized with SMA contains high levels of MA. Furthermore, at lower compatibilizer content, increase of the compatibilizer level in blends result in decreasing gap between two Tgs corresponding to the constituent polymers. Small angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) test results indicated that compatibilizer concentration for the minimum of blend interface layer's thickness was exactly the same as it was when compatibilized PC/AES blend exhibited optimal compatibility in DSC test. The observed morphological changes were consistent well with the DSC and SAXS test results. A new mechanism of interfacial structural development was proposed to explain unusual phenomena of SMA compatibilized PC/AES blends. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Ethylene–propylene–diene rubber (EPDM)/montmorillonite (MMT) composites were prepared through a melt process, and three kinds of surfactants with different ammonium cations were used to modify MMT and affect the morphology of the composites. The morphology of the composites depended on the alkyl ammonium salt length, that is, the hydrophobicity of the organic surfactants. Organophilic montmorillonite (OMMT), modified by octadecyltrimethyl ammonium salt and distearyldimethyl ammonium salt, was intercalated and partially exfoliated in the EPDM matrix, whereas OMMT modified by hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium chloride exhibited a morphology in which OMMT existed as a common filler. Ethylene–propylene–diene rubber grafted with maleic anhydride (MAH‐g‐EPDM) was used as a compatibilizer and greatly affected the dispersion of OMMT. When OMMTs were modified by octadecyltrimethyl ammonium chloride and distearydimethyl ammonium chloride, the EPDM/OMMT/MAH‐g‐EPDM composites (100/15/5) had an exfoliated structure, and they showed good mechanical properties and high dynamic moduli. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A high‐density polyethylene with grafted maleic anhydride units has been investigated as a compatibilizer for high‐density polyethylene with polyamide 6. The material acts as an effective compatibilizer, causing a marked reduction in dispersed phase size as well as an increase in tensile strength and toughness. Compatibilizer also affects the glass‐transition temperature, crystallization kinetics, and amount of crystalline material for certain blend compositions. The addition of zinc cations, which are effective in increasing ethylene‐acid copolymer compatibilizer performance in low‐density polyethylene/polyamide blends, has little, if any, effect on compatibilizer performance in these high‐density polyethylene/polyamide blends. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Several parameters which affect the nanocomposite formation in a sulfur‐cured ethylene propylene diene rubber (EPDM) containing 10 phr organoclay (montmorillonite modified with octadecylamine; MMT–ODA), were investigated. The parameters varied were linked to processing (mixer type, temperature) and rubber recipe (compatibilizer, accelerator). Increasing temperature and high shear mixing (internal mixer instead of open mill) improved the mechanical performance of the rubber nanocomposites. A more pronounced effect was achieved by using polar EPDM rubbers (maleic anhydride and glycidyl methacrylate grafted version) as compatibilizer. Among the accelerators, zinc diethyldithiocarbamate proved to be most suitable. The microstructure of the rubber/organoclay systems was studied by X‐ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Organoclay intercalation/exfoliation was accompanied by its more or less severe confinement (reaggregation, deintercalation). This was traced to a partial or full removal of the ODA intercalant from the clay galleries via the formation of a zinc complex in which amine groups of the ODA and sulfur participated. Multilayer hoses for turbo lines can be produced by ethylene acrylic rubber (AEM) as the inner layer and peroxide cured ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) as the outer layer. In such a case, the polar AEM should adhere well to the apolar EPDM to ensure proper functioning. In this work, new blends were developed and optimized to offer potential for using as intermediate bonding layers. Different compositions of dipolymer AEM/EPDM and terpolymer AEM/EPDM blends with and without maleic anhydride grafted EPDM (Ma‐g‐EPDM) as a compatibilizer were successfully prepared. Curing behaviors, as well as mechanical and thermal properties of the blends were investigated in detail. The effects of the compatibilizer addition were also explored by dynamical mechanical analysis, DeMattia and scanning electron microscope. It is found that Ma‐g‐EPDM is more effective in terpolymer AEM containing blends. Additionally, 60/40:AEM/EPDM weight ratio is the most suitable proportion for turbo lines. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2018 , 135, 46525.  相似文献
