The Amish believe that their society and their technology are inextricably intertwined. In an effort to maintain and protect their community of believers, therefore, the Amish require that every technology they use not only conforms to, but reinforces their tradition, culture, and religion. They achieve these goals through two primary techniques. First they choose technologies that they believe will best promote the values they hold most dear - values like humility, equality, and simplicity. Thus they have rejected the speed, glamour and personal expression of automobiles in favor of modest, slow. and community-building horse- drawn buggies. Second, they deliberately choose tools that are different from those used by the outside world. This differentiation helps them maintain their unique identity, bonds their community, and ensures that they will continue to be able to accept technology on their own terms. The Amish view technologies as value-laden tools and use these tools to reinforce their values and build their community. While many scholars of technology have argued that this is the case, the Amish employ the idea in order to build the world they want to live in. 相似文献

Demographic trends indicate that populations in the U.S., Europe, and Japan are aging rapidly. As people age, they will seek more health-care services and ingest more oral medications. Poor compliance in taking medications is especially problematic in the elderly because of the changes in their metabolism, cognitive skills, and physical abilities. Simple devices, special packaging, and physical aids, while offering some improvement, do not appear able to answer this challenge. Drawbacks to such mechanical devices include their inability to accommodate multiple medications, their inability to remind patients when to take their medications, their inability to be easily reprogrammed for different dosage regimens, and their higher packaging costs. Electronic medication compliance dispensers, such as the MedMinder, appear to address many of these issues, but their true utility awaits definitive results from further development and clinical field trials 相似文献

In this paper the design and development of a database for the registration of power utilities’ customers and their energy behavior are described. The database also includes the customers’ devices and buildings, their demand curves, their tariffs, their connection with power and gas networks, as well as the measures of demand side management and energy saving, which can be implemented. The main purpose of this database is to support end-use models and load forecasting algorithms for individual customers or their respective clusters, to study the effects of energy efficiency programs and to evaluate the last ones financially. A so-called capstone design course at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) that maximizes engineering practices is described. The central design project is essentially used as a vehicle for the presentation and experience of engineering practices. To the extent possible, the students are afforded a real-life industry experience. They work in teams, select and propose their systems/projects, specify their systems, plan their projects in depth, design and test their systems, document and orally present their project, and demonstrate their systems. Where appropriate, practices lecture topics are synchronized with the project requirement, providing student preparation and reinforcement. As a result of many disadvantages faced by the regulator in current regulatory schemes, reliability insurance scheme (RIS) has been introduced as a new regulatory scheme. This scheme allows consumers to determine their coverage levels according to their value for reliability services (i.e., cost incurred for outages), and pay corresponding premiums to the utility. The utility is then required to reimburse consumers for outages according to their outage cost. The consumer’s outage cost is extremely dependent on the duration of outages and this dependency is well defined by a function known as a Customer Damage Function (CDF). To enable consumers to fully cover the reliability risks, utility should provide consumers with contracts which allow them to select coverage levels according to their CDF.Due to the inflexibility of electrical grids, most utilities cannot differentiate the reliability services at the household level and so the public good aspects of the reliability services are emphasized. In such circumstances, selfish consumers can misrepresent their willingness to pay for the reliability services and benefit from their neighbors’ choices (i.e. free-ride on the reliable services provided for their neighbors). Free-riding may lead to the underinvestment in the grid. In this paper, primarily, CDF-based insurance contracts are designed and in following, a method for solving the free-riding problem is presented. 相似文献
