A knowledge based tutoring system is used to support the education of power engineering students. The aim of this project is to make teaching and learning more productive and efficient by employing modern technologies. It seeks to find new methods to teach large numbers of students with no increase in staff. The tutoring system is based on an expert system shell. It provides a functionally interacting set of theory and problems, and supports student progress through monitoring and assessment. This paper describes the development of the tutoring system for teaching electrical engineering subjects, and in particular, fault analysis in power systems. The expert system based software has been successfully used by power engineering students. They found this software easy to use and understand, and it has become an extra teaching tool 相似文献

In September 1974, the Polytechnic Institute of New York (formerly the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn) offered undergraduate degree programs for the first time at its Long Island campus in Aerospace, Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering. This paper describes the Freshman General Engineering Lab, GE 103, the first in a sequence of new undergraduate engineering laboratories that has been developed to support these new programs. GE 103 is a two-credit, four hours per week, laboratory required for all Freshman during their second semester. The course is designed with a three-fold purpose: 1) acquaint the incoming students with representative experiments and instrumentation in the various aforementioned engineering disciplines, 2) include experiments which illustrate, where possible, the application of theory taught in the first year physics lectures, and 3) coordinate the freshman computer course with this laboratory so that assigned computer problems are related to experiments performed. With these objectives in mind, GE 103 has been designed to function as an introductory engineering-physics laboratory. Since the foundation of the first national Engineers Without Borders (EWB) organization, or Ingenieurs San Frontieres (ISF-France), EWB-affiliated national organizations have been formed in many countries around the world. All EWB-affiliated organizations share the same vision: a world where all people have access to basic resources and knowledge to meet their self-identified engineering and economic development needs. EWB members want to contribute to new and ongoing development projects around the world in an effective way and at the same time promote new dimensions of experience for engineering students and practicing engineers. The mission of all EWB-affiliated organizations is to support disadvantaged communities in improving their living standard, welfare, livelihood, and quality of life through the implementation of environmentally and economically sustainable engineering projects, while developing internationally responsible engineering students and professionals. EWB members believe in change that can contribute positively to the communities in which they work, in common action to provide new solutions, and in working to interrupt the cycle of poverty that contributes to terrorism and the rejection of democracy. A deeper cooperation between the national EWBs within the framework of EWB-International will also be valuable for students wanting to participate in projects in the third world. This international cooperation could consist of an exchange of experience, allowing project team members from other countries and support to students from other countries wanting to utilize infrastructure and local contacts at a specific site developed by a national EWB organization. 相似文献

This paper deals with the application of web-based technologies to power engineering education in an interactive student/mentor environment. The modern teaching/learning concepts and new technologies to support these concepts have been developed. This project incorporates web-based tools, including Internet, videoconferencing, and educational intelligent system modules for power engineering education. Different student learning styles are adapted for power engineering applications. The new ABET EC2000 accreditation guidelines call for greater emphasis on social and ethical issues in the education of engineering students. Universities are responding in varied ways - generally through increased liberal arts content and, in a few instances, through design activities, but generally, design education focuses primarily on the technical and process aspects. This is especially true in the new first-year engineering design courses that have evolved in the 1990s. A first-year “Introduction to Engineering Design” course has been developed at the University of Dayton that seeks to achieve a balance between technical, social and ethical issues throughout the design process to help ground the education of engineering students with the ideals of social and ethical responsibility as part of their profession. This paper describes in detail the design of the T-63/76?C8.8 steam turbine manufactured by Ural Turbine Works (refurbished significantly), its electrohydraulic control and protection system made according to the current requirements on control and protection, the heat flow diagram, and arrangement of the turbine. The T-63/76?C8.8 steam turbine is intended to be used in double-shaft double-circuit combined-cycle monoblocks at a number of thermal power plants currently under construction. Hitachi, Ltd., a diversified electric company of Japan, has been enthusiastic in educating its employees since its foundation in 1910. It has given great support to the value of academic learning. This philosophy has promoted its engineering education, and counteracted a deficiency in the traditional lifelong employment system, effectively. The importance of On-the-Job Training (OJT) should be emphasized. However, engineering education at the corporate level is still needed. Hitachi has developed six programs to cover various academic and specialized areas. Methods for evaluation are discussed. A need exists for classroom-level assessment and evaluation rubrics or instruments to provide meaningful feedback to students on their learning and performance. A web-based assessment library (WeBAL) has been compiled, reviewed, and made available to support engineering faculty when assessing or evaluating students' engineering communication or teamwork activities, two of the a-k skill areas required by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) for accreditation of engineering programs and curricula. These instruments are annotated to support selection and classroom usage. A simple, online, menu-based selection process guides faculty users to appropriate instruments to meet specific needs, and all instruments may be downloaded and adapted as desired by faculty. 相似文献

An overview is given of the academic discipline of engineering ethics in the United States, describing how the subject has been taught in the US, and suggesting a new method that uses the history and sociology of science and technology to teach ethical issues in engineering. Traditionally, engineering ethicists have focussed on accidents to analyze both ethical conduct and social implications of engineering. During the past several years, there has been a growing demand for skilled software engineers, a demand that, unfortunately, has not been satisfied, resulting in a variety of problems for the discipline. This work presents a new approach called learner-centered Web-based instruction in software engineering that can be used to educate skilled engineers. The approach is based on three ideas. First, software engineering education must become more realistic. Second, software engineering education has to move closer to the learner. Finally, it must take advantage of the Web since this technology has the power of being a unique tool for implementing change in education. Today, biomedical engineering (BME) in tertiary medical care involves functions such as: medical monitoring (e.g., PET visualization of brain receptors to identify neuronal dysfunction); medical diagnosis (e.g., computer-aided echocardiographic texture analysis to detect myocardial infarcts); radiation therapy (for cancer treatment); organ-support (e.g., peritoneal dialysis); therapeutic function (e.g., encapsulation of insulin-producing pancreatic islet cells for treatment of diabetes). However, is biomedical engineering a relatively new field? Not really, although one may have opened up new vistas of it. In the past, science was not so compartmentalized into material science, engineering science, and life science. Hermann von Helmholtz (1821-1894), who determined the velocity of pulse-propagation in nerves, was professor of both physiology and physics. On the German 10 DM note is depicted (along with the familiar bell-shaped probability distribution curve) the portrait of Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777-1855). Ranking as one of the greatest mathematicians of all times, he also made important contributions to astronomy, geodesy, and electromagnetism. It is this spirit, to explore and bring to bear physical and engineering sciences as well as psychology to medical and clinical sciences, that constitutes the future of biomedical engineering. A modern and intrinsic concept is that of internal biomedical engineering or organ systems engineering, entailing analyses of organ functional mechanisms and processes. Biomedical engineering development of both macro and micro body processes can eventually lead to more intrinsic and reliable diagnostic methodologies. However, the author first visits a hitherto relatively unexplored phenomenon associated with vital (life) engineering, namely the role of consciousness in health and disease. 消力池的优化设计一直是水利工程中的热点课题。传统的消力池优化方法往往采用试错法。试错法不但效率低,而且在设计过程中很难兼顾多个优化目标。因此,建立一套系统性的、目标定向的优化方法十分必要。研究以位于四川省广元市的大寨水库消力池为例,采用SVR回归模型(support vector regression,SVR)建立优化变量(跌坎高度d、突扩比β和尾坎坡度θ)与优化目标(消能率?E/E1、临底流速v)之间的近似模型,并采用遗传算法(genetic algorithm,GA)求解该近似模型,得到一个优化后的消力池体型。对比优化前体型,优化后的消力池消能率几乎不变,但最大临底流速明显降低,底板时均压强分布趋于均匀,消力池综合性能得到了提高。结果表明,提出的优化方法同样适用于类似水工建筑物的体型优化设计问题。 相似文献

Educational issues on number representation and arithmetic in computers: an undergraduate laboratory
This paper presents an initiative to teach computer representation of numbers and arithmetic in undergraduate courses in computer science and engineering. The approach is based upon carefully designed practical exercises that highlight the main properties and computational issues of finite-length number representation and arithmetic. In conjunction with the exercises, an auxiliary computer-based environment constitutes a valuable support tool for students to learn and understand the concepts involved. For integer representation, this work has focused on the standard 2's complement. Special emphasis has been put on the algorithms for integer arithmetic operations. For floating-point representation, simpler formats have been used as an introduction to the IEEE Standard 754, with the aim of presenting the fundamentals of the floating-point computation and emphasizing its limitations. This approach could be included in introductory courses related to computer organization, programming, discrete mathematics, or numerical methods. 相似文献

In Fall 1993 the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of California, Davis introduced a new electrical engineering and a new computer engineering curriculum, each characterized by a well-coordinated junior core leading to a carefully chosen set of senior design elective courses. Through integration of a select but powerful set of computer tools into the junior core, students will be able to concentrate on understanding basic engineering principals while simultaneously obtaining important analytic and computer skills for senior elective courses. The number of required courses has been decreased but the number of units has remained roughly the same while maintaining the lower-division (freshman and sophomore) program essentially unchanged as required by the California higher education plan. The result is a curriculum that focuses on fundamentals through modern design techniques in such a way that both on-campus students and community college transfer students will be able to complete the engineering curriculum in four years 相似文献

Research on ways to improve engineering education has identified management and innovation skills as important to success in an engineering career. This paper explores the nature of those management and innovation skills through presentation of some original research on a community of innovative engineers and managers and some published research on personality differences between engineers, managers, and entrepreneurial innovators. This paper suggests the key to producing engineering graduates with a penchant for managing and innovating lies in developing a special kind of individuality (authenticity) in engineers toward the end of their tertiary studies. It suggests this individuality involves the courage to break with one's engineering paradigm as required and to operate pragmatically and “unscientifically” in the “public world” rather than theoretically and “scientifically” in the “special world” of engineering.
