A Memetic Approach to the Nurse Rostering Problem   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Constructing timetables of work for personnel in healthcare institutions is known to be a highly constrained and difficult problem to solve. In this paper, we discuss a commercial system, together with the model it uses, for this rostering problem. We show that tabu search heuristics can be made effective, particularly for obtaining reasonably good solutions quickly for smaller rostering problems. We discuss the robustness issues, which arise in practice, for tabu search heuristics. This paper introduces a range of new memetic approaches for the problem, which use a steepest descent improvement heuristic within a genetic algorithm framework. We provide empirical evidence to demonstrate the best features of a memetic algorithm for the rostering problem, particularly the nature of an effective recombination operator, and show that these memetic approaches can handle initialisation parameters and a range of instances more robustly than tabu search algorithms, at the expense of longer solution times. Having presented tabu search and memetic approaches (both with benefits and drawbacks) we finally present an algorithm that is a hybrid of both approaches. This technique produces better solutions than either of the earlier approaches and it is relatively unaffected by initialisation and parameter changes, combining some of the best features of each approach to create a hybrid which is greater than the sum of its component algorithms.  相似文献

Memetic algorithms have been devised to rectify the absence of a local search mechanism in evolutionary algorithms. This paper proposes a differential memetic algorithm (DMA). To this end, first we propose a differential bidirectional random search as a local search algorithm. Then, a randomized blending crossover (RBleX) is proposed which aimed to scatter the new born offspring more diversely in the whole search space. We devise our proposed DMA, by using the RBleX crossover in the GA, and including the DBRS local search algorithm. A comparison of the performance of the DMA and those of seven other evolutionary/memetic or hybrid algorithms reported in two different papers on numerous bechmark functions demonstrates better performance of proposed DMA algorithm in most of the cases.  相似文献

Nowadays, large scale optimisation problems arise as a very interesting field of research, because they appear in many real-world problems (bio-computing, data mining, etc.). Thus, scalability becomes an essential requirement for modern optimisation algorithms. In a previous work, we presented memetic algorithms based on local search chains. Local search chain concerns the idea that, at one stage, the local search operator may continue the operation of a previous invocation, starting from the final configuration reached by this one. Using this technique, it was presented a memetic algorithm, MA-CMA-Chains, using the CMA-ES algorithm as its local search component. This proposal obtained very good results for continuous optimisation problems, in particular with medium-size (with up to dimension 50). Unfortunately, CMA-ES scalability is restricted by several costly operations, thus MA-CMA-Chains could not be successfully applied to large scale problems. In this article we study the scalability of memetic algorithms based on local search chains, creating memetic algorithms with different local search methods and comparing them, considering both the error values and the processing cost. We also propose a variation of Solis Wets method, that we call Subgrouping Solis Wets algorithm. This local search method explores, at each step of the algorithm, only a random subset of the variables. This subset changes after a certain number of evaluations. Finally, we propose a new memetic algorithm based on local search chains for high dimensionality, MA-SSW-Chains, using the Subgrouping Solis Wets’ algorithm as its local search method. This algorithm is compared with MA-CMA-Chains and different reference algorithms, and it is shown that the proposal is fairly scalable and it is statistically very competitive for high-dimensional problems.  相似文献

In recent years, hybridization of multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs) with traditional mathematical programming techniques have received significant attention in the field of evolutionary computing (EC). The use of multiple strategies with self-adaptation manners can further improve the algorithmic performances of decomposition-based evolutionary algorithms. In this paper, we propose a new multiobjective memetic algorithm based on the decomposition approach and the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. For brevity, we refer to our developed approach as MOEA/D-DE+PSO. In our proposed methodology, PSO acts as a local search engine and differential evolution works as the main search operator in the whole process of optimization. PSO updates the position of its solution with the help of the best information on itself and its neighboring solution. The experimental results produced by our developed memtic algorithm are more promising than those of the simple MOEA/D algorithm, on most test problems. Results on the sensitivity of the suggested algorithm to key parameters such as population size, neighborhood size and maximum number of solutions to be altered for a given subproblem in the decomposition process are also included.  相似文献

Recently, there has been an increasing concern from the evolutionary computation community on dynamic optimization problems since many real-world optimization problems are dynamic. This paper investigates a particle swarm optimization (PSO) based memetic algorithm that hybridizes PSO with a local search technique for dynamic optimization problems. Within the framework of the proposed algorithm, a local version of PSO with a ring-shape topology structure is used as the global search operator and a fuzzy cognition local search method is proposed as the local search technique. In addition, a self-organized random immigrants scheme is extended into our proposed algorithm in order to further enhance its exploration capacity for new peaks in the search space. Experimental study over the moving peaks benchmark problem shows that the proposed PSO-based memetic algorithm is robust and adaptable in dynamic environments.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a memetic algorithm for the optimal winner determination problem in combinatorial auctions. First, we investigate a new selection strategy based on both fitness and diversity to choose individuals to participate in the reproduction phase of the memetic algorithm. The resulting algorithm is enhanced by using a stochastic local search (SLS) component combined with a specific crossover operator. This operator is used to identify promising search regions while the stochastic local search performs an intensified search of solutions around these regions. Experiments on various realistic instances of the considered problem are performed to show and compare the effectiveness of our approach.  相似文献

In this paper, a fitness landscape analysis for several instances of the quadratic assignment problem (QAP) is performed, and the results are used to classify problem instances according to their hardness for local search heuristics and meta-heuristics based on local search. The local properties of the fitness landscape are studied by performing an autocorrelation analysis, while the global structure is investigated by employing a fitness distance correlation analysis. It is shown that epistasis, as expressed by the dominance of the flow and distance matrices of a QAP instance, the landscape ruggedness in terms of the correlation length of a landscape, and the correlation between fitness and distance of local optima in the landscape together are useful for predicting the performance of memetic algorithms-evolutionary algorithms incorporating local search (to a certain extent). Thus, based on these properties, a favorable choice of recombination and/or mutation operators can be found. Experiments comparing three different evolutionary operators for a memetic algorithm are presented.  相似文献

Dynamic optimization problems challenge traditional evolutionary algorithms seriously since they, once converged, cannot adapt quickly to environmental changes. This paper investigates the application of memetic algorithms, a class of hybrid evolutionary algorithms, for dynamic optimization problems. An adaptive hill climbing method is proposed as the local search technique in the framework of memetic algorithms, which combines the features of greedy crossover-based hill climbing and steepest mutation-based hill climbing. In order to address the convergence problem, two diversity maintaining methods, called adaptive dual mapping and triggered random immigrants, respectively, are also introduced into the proposed memetic algorithm for dynamic optimization problems. Based on a series of dynamic problems generated from several stationary benchmark problems, experiments are carried out to investigate the performance of the proposed memetic algorithm in comparison with some peer evolutionary algorithms. The experimental results show the efficiency of the proposed memetic algorithm in dynamic environments.  相似文献

The dynamic weapon-target assignment (DWTA) problem is an important issue in the field of military command and control. An asset-based DWTA optimization model was proposed with four kinds of constraints considered, including capability constraints, strategy constraints, resource constraints and engagement feasibility constraints. A general “virtual” representation of decisions was presented to facilitate the generation of feasible decisions. The representation is in essence the permutation of all assignment pairs. A construction procedure converts the permutations into real feasible decisions. In order to solve this problem, three evolutionary decision-making algorithms, including a genetic algorithm and two memetic algorithms, were developed. Experimental results show that the memetic algorithm based on greedy local search can generate obviously better DWTA decisions, especially for large-scale problems, than the genetic algorithm and the memetic algorithm based on steepest local search.  相似文献

Memetic algorithms are hybrid evolutionary algorithms that combine global and local search by using an evolutionary algorithm to perform exploration while the local search method performs exploitation. This paper presents two hybrid heuristic algorithms that combine particle swarm optimization (PSO) with simulated annealing (SA) and tabu search (TS), respectively. The hybrid algorithms were applied on the hybrid flow shop scheduling problem. Experimental results reveal that these memetic techniques can effectively produce improved solutions over conventional methods with faster convergence.  相似文献

Several gradient-based approaches such as back propagation (BP) and Levenberg Marquardt (LM) methods have been developed for training the neural network (NN) based systems. But, for multimodal cost functions these procedures may lead to local minima, therefore, the evolutionary algorithms (EAs) based procedures are considered as promising alternatives. In this paper we focus on a memetic algorithm based approach for training the multilayer perceptron NN applied to nonlinear system identification. The proposed memetic algorithm is an alternative to gradient search methods, such as back-propagation and back-propagation with momentum which has inherent limitations of many local optima. Here we have proposed the identification of a nonlinear system using memetic differential evolution (DE) algorithm and compared the results with other six algorithms such as Back-propagation (BP), Genetic Algorithm (GA), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Differential Evolution (DE), Genetic Algorithm Back-propagation (GABP), Particle Swarm Optimization combined with Back-propagation (PSOBP). In the proposed system identification scheme, we have exploited DE to be hybridized with the back propagation algorithm, i.e. differential evolution back-propagation (DEBP) where the local search BP algorithm is used as an operator to DE. These algorithms have been tested on a standard benchmark problem for nonlinear system identification to prove their efficacy. First examples shows the comparison of different algorithms which proves that the proposed DEBP is having better identification capability in comparison to other. In example 2 good behavior of the identification method is tested on an one degree of freedom (1DOF) experimental aerodynamic test rig, a twin rotor multi-input-multi-output system (TRMS), finally it is applied to Box and Jenkins Gas furnace benchmark identification problem and its efficacy has been tested through correlation analysis.  相似文献

The capacitated arc routing problem (CARP) has attracted much attention during the last few years due to its wide applications in real life. Since CARP is NP-hard and exact methods are only applicable to small instances, heuristic and metaheuristic methods are widely adopted when solving CARP. In this paper, we propose a memetic algorithm, namely memetic algorithm with extended neighborhood search (MAENS), for CARP. MAENS is distinct from existing approaches in the utilization of a novel local search operator, namely Merge-Split (MS). The MS operator is capable of searching using large step sizes, and thus has the potential to search the solution space more efficiently and is less likely to be trapped in local optima. Experimental results show that MAENS is superior to a number of state-of-the-art algorithms, and the advanced performance of MAENS is mainly due to the MS operator. The application of the MS operator is not limited to MAENS. It can be easily generalized to other approaches.  相似文献

This paper presents a hybrid memetic algorithm for the problem of scheduling n jobs on m unrelated parallel machines with the objective of maximizing the weighted number of jobs that are completed exactly at their due dates. For each job, due date, weight, and the processing times on different machines are given. It has been shown that when the numbers of machines are a part of input, this problem is NP-hard in the strong sense. At first, the problem is formulated as an integer linear programming model. This model is practical to solve small-size problems. Afterward, a hybrid memetic algorithm is implemented which uses two heuristic algorithms as constructive algorithms, making initial population set. A data oriented mutation operator is implemented so as to facilitate memetic algorithm search process. Performance of all algorithms including heuristics (H1 and H2), hybrid genetic algorithm and hybrid memetic algorithm are evaluated through computational experiments which showed the capabilities of the proposed hybrid algorithm.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a multi-surrogates assisted memetic algorithm for solving optimization problems with computationally expensive fitness functions. The essential backbone of our framework is an evolutionary algorithm coupled with a local search solver that employs multi-surrogate in the spirit of Lamarckian learning. Inspired by the notion of ‘blessing and curse of uncertainty’ in approximation models, we combine regression and exact interpolating surrogate models in the evolutionary search. Empirical results are presented for a series of commonly used benchmark problems to demonstrate that the proposed framework converges to good solution quality more efficiently than the standard genetic algorithm, memetic algorithm and surrogate-assisted memetic algorithms.  相似文献

In recent years, the historical data during the search process of evolutionary algorithms has received increasing attention from many researchers, and some hybrid evolutionary algorithms with machine-learning have been proposed. However, the majority of the literature is centered on continuous problems with a single optimization objective. There are still a lot of problems to be handled for multi-objective combinatorial optimization problems. Therefore, this paper proposes a machine-learning based multi-objective memetic algorithm (ML-MOMA) for the discrete permutation flowshop scheduling problem. There are two main features in the proposed ML-MOMA. First, each solution is assigned with an individual archive to store the non-dominated solutions found by it and based on these individual archives a new population update method is presented. Second, an adaptive multi-objective local search is developed, in which the analysis of historical data accumulated during the search process is used to adaptively determine which non-dominated solutions should be selected for local search and how the local search should be applied. Computational results based on benchmark problems show that the cooperation of the above two features can help to achieve a balance between evolutionary global search and local search. In addition, many of the best known Pareto fronts for these benchmark problems in the literature can be improved by the proposed ML-MOMA.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose and investigate a new local search strategy for multiobjective memetic algorithms. More precisely, we suggest a novel iterative search procedure, known as the Hill Climber with Sidestep (HCS), which is designed for the treatment of multiobjective optimization problems, and show further two possible ways to integrate the HCS into a given evolutionary strategy leading to new memetic (or hybrid) algorithms. The pecularity of the HCS is that it is intended to be capable both moving toward and along the (local) Pareto set depending on the distance of the current iterate toward this set. The local search procedure utilizes the geometry of the directional cones of such optimization problems and works with or without gradient information. Finally, we present some numerical results on some well-known benchmark problems, indicating the strength of the local search strategy as a standalone algorithm as well as its benefit when used within a MOEA. For the latter we use the state of the art algorithms Nondominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II and Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm 2 as base MOEAs.   相似文献

Coevolving memetic algorithms are a family of metaheuristic search algorithms in which a rule-based representation of local search (LS) is coadapted alongside candidate solutions within a hybrid evolutionary system. Simple versions of these systems have been shown to outperform other nonadaptive memetic and evolutionary algorithms on a range of problems. This paper presents a rationale for such systems and places them in the context of other recent work on adaptive memetic algorithms. It then proposes a general structure within which a population of LS algorithms can be evolved in tandem with the solutions to which they are applied. Previous research started with a simple self-adaptive system before moving on to more complex models. Results showed that the algorithm was able to discover and exploit certain forms of structure and regularities within the problems. This "metalearning" of problem features provided a means of creating highly scalable algorithms. This work is briefly reviewed to highlight some of the important findings and behaviors exhibited. Based on this analysis, new results are then presented from systems with more flexible representations, which, again, show significant improvements. Finally, the current state of, and future directions for, research in this area is discussed.  相似文献

The twin‐screw configuration problem arises during polymer extrusion and compounding. It consists in defining the location of a set of pre‐defined screw elements along the screw axis in order to optimize different, typically conflicting objectives. In this paper, we present a simple yet effective stochastic local search (SLS) algorithm for this problem. Our algorithm is based on efficient single‐objective iterative improvement algorithms, which have been developed by studying different neighborhood structures, neighborhood search strategies, and neighborhood restrictions. These algorithms are embedded into a variation of the two‐phase local search framework to tackle various bi‐objective versions of this problem. An experimental comparison with a previously proposed multi‐objective evolutionary algorithm shows that a main advantage of our SLS algorithm is that it converges faster to a high‐quality approximation to the Pareto front.  相似文献

Cooperative coevolution decomposes an optimisation problem into subcomponents and collectively solves them using evolutionary algorithms. Memetic algorithms provides enhancement to evolutionary algorithms with local search. Recently, the incorporation of local search into a memetic cooperative coevolution method has shown to be efficient for training feedforward networks on pattern classification problems. This paper applies the memetic cooperative coevolution method for training recurrent neural networks on grammatical inference problems. The results show that the proposed method achieves better performance in terms of optimisation time and robustness.  相似文献

Real-coded memetic algorithms with crossover hill-climbing   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
This paper presents a real-coded memetic algorithm that applies a crossover hill-climbing to solutions produced by the genetic operators. On the one hand, the memetic algorithm provides global search (reliability) by means of the promotion of high levels of population diversity. On the other, the crossover hill-climbing exploits the self-adaptive capacity of real-parameter crossover operators with the aim of producing an effective local tuning on the solutions (accuracy). An important aspect of the memetic algorithm proposed is that it adaptively assigns different local search probabilities to individuals. It was observed that the algorithm adjusts the global/local search balance according to the particularities of each problem instance. Experimental results show that, for a wide range of problems, the method we propose here consistently outperforms other real-coded memetic algorithms which appeared in the literature.  相似文献
