Software quality assurance in Australia: an update

Three recent events are likely to have a significant impact on the future direction of software quality in Australia: the Kean Report, the redevelopment of Australian standard AS3563 and a review of Government purchasing policy as a result of a change of Commonwealth Government. These events, and their subsequent impacts, could have implications and could provide lessons for the software quality assurance industry internationally. These lessons concern: providing adequate education for purchasers, suppliers and auditors on what ISO9000 is all about; implementing appropriate ISO9000-compliant quality management systems, particularly for small and medium sized enterprises; defining an appropriate role for government; and utilizing effective guidance for adopting ISO9001 to software development.

在分析国际上影响最为深远的质量管理标准ISO9000的基础上，针对我国软件产业的现状，提出了一个在软件组织贯彻实施ISO9000标准，以达到软件质量和软件过程管理的实施模型。     

软件开发的质量保证体系

软件因其复杂性和难以度量，使软件产品的质量很难得到保证。如何确保软件项目的质量，提高我国软件产品的竞争力，是我国软件企业必须考虑的问题，通过对目前国际上流行的软件质量保证体系的分析，提出了在应用ISO9000的基础上应有逐渐过度到CMM，实现软件开发过程的持续改进。     

软件质量管理研究的发展

软件质量以及软件质量管理日益成为人们关注的焦点。文章在前人研究的基础上,对目前国际上流行的软件质量管理的理论和方法进行研究,重点讨论了当前较为通用的两种软件质量管理的标准——ISO9000标准和CMM（能力成熟度模型）,并分析二者的相关性和差异性。总结了国内软件质量管理的现状,以及进行软件过程改进所面临的问题。     

PROCESSUS – Integration of SEI CMM and ISO quality models

Integration of the two best-known quality management models for software production and maintenance, the Capability Maturity Model and the ISO 9001 Model (including ISO 9000-3) is of great interest for both the European and the American software market. The definition of a quality management model which would conform to the requirements of both models and use the advantages of each was a key goal of our research work within the project PROCESSUS.1 Research work was conducted in two steps: first, the detailed comparison of both models was made in order to define their common issues and specifics of each model, and secondly, the integrated model based on the results of the comparison was defined. In this paper the comparison method and results are described. Further, a method for the integration and a framework of the integrated model are presented. The core of our work is actually the content of the integrated model. Due to extensive content of the integrated model examples of some parts only are given in the appendix. The integrated model presented in this paper has already been successfully used in organizations which are cooperating in the project PROCESSUS o these organizations achieved the needed maturity for certification to the ISO 9001 standard and a maturity level near level 3 of CMM.

Comparing ISO 9001 and the Capability Maturity Model for Software

The Capability Maturity Model for Software developed by the Software Engineering Institute and the ISO 9000 series of standards developed by the International Standards Organization share a common concern with quality and process management. The two are driven by similar concerns and are intuitively correlated. The purpose of this paper is to compare the CMM and ISO 9001. The results of the analysis indicate that, although an ISO 9001 compliant organization would not necessarily satisfy all of the level 2 key process areas, it would satisfy most of the level 2 goals and many of the level 3 goals.

Frameworks for quality software process: SEI Capability Maturity Model versus ISO 9000

With the historical characterization of software development as being costly due to massive schedule delays, incorporation of the ever-changing technology, budget reductions, and missing customer requirements, the trend of the 1990s in establishing a quality improvement or a quality assurance programme has been over-whelming. The two popular models or frameworks for assessment of a quality assurance programme are the US government-sponsored Capability Maturity Model (CMM) and the internationally recognized ISO-9000 quality standards. Both of these two frameworks share a common concern regarding software quality and process management. Since it is not clear which of these two frameworks is most effective in achieving their shared objectives, it is valuable and timely to provide an objective overview of both models and to compare and contrast their features for quality software development. Because there are many legitimate areas for comparison, we have selected the two most important as a basis for comparison: (1) the role of management, and (2) the application of measurements. We also provide a summary of the reported impact of these two models on the organizations adhering to their standards, and include our observations and analysis.

Examining the Effect of the Transformational Leader on Software Quality

Developing and maintaining quality software is paramount in the information-intensive society. A myriad of concepts, tools and techniques exist that can be employed to improve the quality of software and at the same time increase developmental efficiencies. Approaches used by many software development units include: Capability Maturity Model (CMM), Total Quality Management (TQM), and ISO 9000-3. Implementation of these approaches without appropriate management oversight does not guarantee success. This study examines the role of the manager vis-à-vis leadership style with software quality. Data collected using a questionnaire administered to members of the American Society for Quality (ASQ) - Software Division, suggest that the Transformational leadership style of the manager has a significant positive relationship with the quality of the software developed.     

Software quality standards in practice: the limitations of using ISO-9001 to support software development

Quality management standard BS5740/ISO9001 is a key technology for UK and Europe in the 1990s. This paper shows that the relevance of BS5750/ISO9001 is limited and suggests that standards bodies must develop and endorse new standards to ensure that software quality improvement programmes continue to be adopted by the information technology industry.

ISO 9000 versus CMM: Standardization and certification of IS development

A growing number of software developers use standards as a basis for their quality systems. Some of them go one step further and have their quality systems certified. In this paper, two well-known quality standards, ISO 9000 and the CMM, are compared. It is concluded that both standards are useful but there is a growing need for more specific standards.
