We propose a benchmark to compare theorem-proving systems on their ability to express proofs of compiler correctness. In contrast to the first POPLmark, we emphasize the connection of proofs to compiler implementations, and we point out that much can be done without binders or alpha-conversion. We propose specific criteria for evaluating the utility of mechanized metatheory systems; we have constructed solutions in both Coq and Twelf metatheory, and we draw conclusions about those two systems in particular.  相似文献

This paper shows how a dialogue system for information-seekingdialogues can be implemented in a type-theory-based syntax editor,originally developed for editing mathematical proofs.The implementation gives a simple logical metatheory tosuch dialogue systems and also suggests new functions forthem, e.g., a local undo operation. The method developed provides alogically based declarative way of implementing simple dialoguesystems that is easy to port to new domains.  相似文献

Formal proofs in mathematics and computer science are being studied because these objects can be verified by a very simple computer program. An important open problem is whether these formal proofs can be generated with an effort not much greater than writing a mathematical paper in, say, LATEX. Modern systems for proof development make the formalization of reasoning relatively easy. However, formalizing computations in such a manner that the results can be used in formal proofs is not immediate. In this paper we show how to obtain formal proofs of statements such as Prime(61) in the context of Peano arithmetic or (x+1)(x+1)=x 2+2x+1 in the context of rings. We hope that the method will help bridge the gap between the efficient systems of computer algebra and the reliable systems of proof development.  相似文献

We propose a new format for writing proofs, calledstructured calculational proof. The format resembles the calculational style already familiar to many computer scientists, but extends it to allow the hierarchical decomposition of larger proofs into smaller ones. Structured calculation is actually an alternative presentation of natural deduction, a style of reasoning which uses hierarchical decomposition to great effect, but which is traditionally expressed in a notation that is inconvenient for writing calculational proofs. The hierarchical nature of structured calculational proofs can be used for browsing proofs in electronic publications.  相似文献

Mechanized reasoning systems and computer algebra systems have different objectives. Their integration is highly desirable, since formal proofs often involve both of the two different tasks proving and calculating. Even more important, proof and computation are often interwoven and not easily separable.In this article we advocate an integration of computer algebra into mechanized reasoning systems at the proof plan level. This approach allows us to view the computer algebra algorithms as methods, that is, declarative representations of the problem-solving knowledge specific to a certain mathematical domain. Automation can be achieved in many cases by searching for a hierarchic proof plan at the method level by using suitable domain-specific control knowledge about the mathematical algorithms. In other words, the uniform framework of proof planning allows us to solve a large class of problems that are not automatically solvable by separate systems.Our approach also gives an answer to the correctness problems inherent in such an integration. We advocate an approach where the computer algebra system produces high-level protocol information that can be processed by an interface to derive proof plans. Such a proof plan in turn can be expanded to proofs at different levels of abstraction, so the approach is well suited for producing a high-level verbalized explication as well as for a low-level, machine-checkable, calculus-level proof.We present an implementation of our ideas and exemplify them using an automatically solved example.Changes in the criterion of rigor of the proof' engender major revolutions in mathematics. In this article, we describe a set of procedures and strategies for searching for proofs in logical systems based on the inference rule condensed detachment. The procedures and strategies rely on the derivation of proof sketches – sequences of formulas that are used as hints to guide the search for sound proofs. In the simplest case, a proof sketch consists of a subproof – key lemmas to prove, for example – and the proof is completed by filling in the missing steps. In the more general case, a proof sketch consists of a sequence of formulas sufficient to find a proof, but it may include formulas that are not provable in the current theory. We find that even in this more general case, proof sketches can provide valuable guidance in finding sound proofs. Proof sketches have been used successfully for numerous problems coming from a variety of problem areas. We have, for example, used proof sketches to find several new two-axiom systems for Boolean algebra using the Sheffer stroke.  相似文献

This article describes the formal verification of a compilation algorithm that transforms parallel moves (parallel assignments between variables) into a semantically-equivalent sequence of elementary moves. Two different specifications of the algorithm are given: an inductive specification and a functional one, each with its correctness proofs. In the proof-theoretic study of logic, the notion of normal proof has been understood and investigated as a metalogical property. Usually we formulate a system of logic, identify a class of proofs as normal proofs, and show that every proof in the system reduces to a corresponding normal proof. This paper develops a system of modal logic that is capable of expressing the notion of normal proof within the system itself, thereby making normal proofs an inherent property of the logic. Using a modality △ to express the existence of a normal proof, the system provides a means for both recognizing and manipulating its own normal proofs. We develop the system as a sequent calculus with the implication connective ⊃ and the modality △, and prove the cut elimination theorem. From the sequent calculus, we derive two equivalent natural deduction systems.  相似文献
