For compact Euclidean bodiesP, Q, we define (P, Q) to be the smallest ratior/s wherer > 0,s > 0 satisfy . HeresQ denotes a scaling ofQ by the factors, andQ,Q are some translates ofQ. This function gives us a new distance function between bodies which, unlike previously studied measures, is invariant under affine transformations. If homothetic bodies are identified, the logarithm of this function is a metric. (Two bodies arehomothetic if one can be obtained from the other by scaling and translation.)For integerk 3, define (k) to be the minimum value such that for each convex polygonP there exists a convexk-gonQ with (P, Q) (k). Among other results, we prove that 2.118 ... <-(3) 2.25 and (k) = 1 + (k –2). We give anO(n 2 log2 n)-time algorithm which, for any input convexn-gonP, finds a triangleT that minimizes (T, P) among triangles. However, in linear time we can find a trianglet with (t, P)<-2.25.Our study is motivated by the attempt to reduce the complexity of the polygon containment problem, and also the motion-planning problem. In each case we describe algorithms which run faster when certain implicitslackness parameters of the input are bounded away from 1. The factorisation problem is to construct the specification of a submoduleX when the specifications of the system and all submodules butX are given. It is usually described by the equation where P and X are submodules of system Q, ¦ is a composition operator, and is the equivalence criterion. In this paper we use a finite state machine (FSM) model consistent with CCS and study two factorisation problems:P |||P Q andP |||P Q, where ||| is a derived CCS composition operator, and represent strong and observational equivalences. Algorithms are presented and proved correct to find the most general specification of submoduleX forP |||P Q withQ -deterministic and forP |||P Q withQ deterministic. Conditions on the submachines of the most general solutions that remain solutions toP |||P Q(P |||P Q) are given. This paper extends and is based on the work of M. W. Shields.  相似文献

Weighted caching is a generalization ofpaging in which the cost to evict an item depends on the item. We study both of these problems as restrictions of the well-knownk-server problem, which involves moving servers in a graph in response to requests so as to minimize the distance traveled.We give a deterministic on-line strategy for weighted caching that, on any sequence of requests, given a cache holdingk items, incurs a cost within a factor ofk/(k–h+1) of the minimum cost possible given a cache holdingh items. The strategy generalizes least recently used, one of the best paging strategies in practice. The analysis is a primal-dual analysis, the first for an on-line problem, exploiting the linear programming structure of thek-server problem.We introduceloose competitiveness, motivated by Sleator and Tarjan's complaint [ST] that the standard competitive ratios for paging strategies are too high. Ak-server strategy isloosely c(k)-competitive if, for any sequence, foralmost all k, the cost incurred by the strategy withk serverseither is no more thanc(k) times the minimum costor is insignificant.We show that certain paging strategies (including least recently used, and first in first out) that arek-competitive in the standard model are looselyc(k)-competitive providedc(k)/Ink and bothk/c(k) andc(k) are nondecreasing. The presence of vagueness in scientific theories (in particular, to those related to and connected with the management of information) is briefly analyzed. We consider, firstly, the problem whether vague predicates can be adequately represented by existing formal theories. A negative answer to this question produces, as a by-product, the suggestion that a good semantics for fuzzy sets can be offered by the notion of distance from idealized items. Secondly, some questions connected with the adequacy of theories of information to the multifaceted informal notion of information suggest to afford this problem within an enlarged dynamical setting.  相似文献

We study generalized quantifiers on finite structures.With every function : we associate a quantifier Q by letting Q x say there are at least (n) elementsx satisfying , where n is the sizeof the universe. This is the general form ofwhat is known as a monotone quantifier of type < 1 >.We study so called polyadic liftsof such quantifiers. The particular lifts we considerare Ramseyfication, branching and resumption.In each case we get exact criteria fordefinability of the lift in terms of simpler quantifiers.  相似文献

In this note, we are interested in the evaluation of conditions of the form The value of attribute a for Q items of X is in F or more shortly Q items of X are F, where X is a set of items, Q denotes a possibly vague proportion (which may be linguistically expressed, e.g. most), F is a (possibly fuzzy) subset of the attribute domain of a. and where the available knowledge about the value a(x) of the attribute a for any item x may be imprecise or even vague. The evaluation is based on a fuzzy pattern matching procedure repeated two times. We present a parallel algorithm for finding a closest pair among all visible pairs (p,q),pP andqQ. The algorithm runs in time O(logn) using O(n) processors on a CREW PRAM, wheren=¦P¦+¦Q¦. This algorithm can be implemented serially in (n) time, which gives a new optimal sequential solution for this problem.This paper appeared in preliminary form as [1]. Plotkin's v -calculus for call-by-value programs is weaker than the -calculus for the same programs in continuation-passing style (CPS). To identify the call-by-value axioms that correspond to on CPS terms, we define a new CPS transformation and an inverse mapping, both of which are interesting in their own right. Using the new CPS transformation, we determine the precise language of CPS terms closed under -transformations, as well as the call-by-value axioms that correspond to the so-called administrative -reductions on CPS terms. Using the inverse mapping, we map the remaining and equalities on CPS terms to axioms on call-by-value terms. On the pure (constant free) set of -terms, the resulting set of axioms is equivalent to Moggi's computational -calculus. If the call-by-value language includes the control operatorsabort andcall-with-current-continuation, the axioms are equivalent to an extension of Felleisenet al.'s v -C-calculus and to the equational subtheory of Talcott's logic IOCC.This article is a revised and extended version of the conference paper with the same title [42]. We consider the time-optimal scheduling problemn/m/J of n jobs with fixed routes on m machines. The problem3/m/J/ with identical routes and the problem3/5/J/ are shown to be NP-hard.
