In this note we investigate the NP-complete problem of minimizing the makespan in a preemptive two machine job shop. We present a polynomial time approximation algorithm with worst case ratio 3/2 for this problem, and we also argue that this is the best possible result that can be derived via our line of approach.  相似文献

A note on MULTIFIT scheduling for uniform machines   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

In this note, we derive the tight worst case bound √6/2+(1/2) k for scheduling with the MULTIFIT heuristic on two parallel uniform machines withk calls of FFD within MULTIFIT. When MULTIFIT is combined with LPT as an incumbent algorithm the worst case bound decreases to √2+1/2+(1/2) k . In this paper, we consider the problem of on-line scheduling a job sequence on two uniform machines. A job can be either rejected, in which case we pay its penalty, or scheduled on machines, in which case it contributes its processing time to the makspan of the constructed schedule. The objective is to minimize the sum of the makespan of the schedule for all accepted jobs and the penalties of all rejected jobs. Both preemptive and non-preemptive versions are considered. For the preemptive version, we present an optimal on-line algorithm with a competitive ratio for any s≥1, where s is the machine speed ratio. For the non-preemptive version, we present an improved lower bound. Moreover, as an optimal algorithm for s≥1.6180 is known, we present a modified version of the known algorithm, and show that it becomes optimal for any 1.3852≤s<1.6180 and has a smaller competitive ratio than that of original version for any 1≤s<1.3852. The maximum gap between its competitive ratio and the lower bound is 0.0534.  相似文献

We consider the problem of scheduling tasks requiring certain processing times on one machine so that the busy time of the machine is maximized. The problem is to find a probabilistic online algorithm with reasonable worst case performance ratio. We answer an open problem of Lipton and Tompkins concerning the best possible ratio that can be achieved. Furthermore, we extend their results to anm-machine analogue. Finally, a variant of the problem is analyzed, in which the machine is provided with a buffer to store one job.  相似文献

This paper deals with vector covering problems in d -dimensional space. The input to a vector covering problem consists of a set X of d -dimensional vectors in [0,1] d . The goal is to partition X into a maximum number of parts, subject to the constraint that in every part the sum of all vectors is at least one in every coordinate. This problem is known to be NP-complete, and we are mainly interested in its on-line and off-line approximability. For the on-line version, we construct approximation algorithms with worst case guarantee arbitrarily close to 1/(2d) in d≥ 2 dimensions. This result contradicts a statement of Csirik and Frenk in [5] where it is claimed that, for d≥ 2 , no on-line algorithm can have a worst case ratio better than zero. Moreover, we prove that, for d≥ 2 , no on-line algorithm can have a worst case ratio better than 2/(2d+1) . For the off-line version, we derive polynomial time approximation algorithms with worst case guarantee Θ(1/ log d) . For d=2 , we present a very fast and very simple off-line approximation algorithm that has worst case ratio 1/2 . Moreover, we show that a method from the area of compact vector summation can be used to construct off-line approximation algorithms with worst case ratio 1/d for every d≥ 2 . We consider a version of the on-line bounded-space bin-packing problem where repacking the items within the active bins is allowed. For this problem, the 1.69103 lower bound of Lee and Lee [7] for the worst case ratios of bounded-space approximation algorithms still applies. We present a polynomial time approximation algorithm that reaches the best possible worst case ratio matching the Lee and Lee lower bound while using onlythree active bins.  相似文献

In a single-machine problem with time-lags a set of jobs has to be processed on a single machine in such a way that certain timing restrictions between the finishing and starting times of the jobs are satisfied and a given objective function is minimized. We consider the case of positive finish-start time-lags which mean that between the finishing time of job i and the starting time of job j the minimal distance has to be respected. New complexity results are derived for single-machine problems with constant positive time-lags which also lead to new results for flow-shop problems with unit processing times and job precedences. We investigate the problem of preemptively schedulingn jobs onm parallel machines. Whenever there is a switch from processing a job to processing another job on some machine, a set-up time is necessary. The objective is to find a schedule which minimizes the maximum completion time. Form≥2 machines, this problem obviously is NP-complete. For the case of job-dependent set-up times, Monma and Potts derived a polynomial time heuristic whose worst case ratio tends to 5/3 as the number of machines tends to infinity. In this paper, we examine the case of constant (job- and machine-independent) set-up times. We present a polynomial time approximation algorithm with worst case ratio 7/6 form=2 machines and worst case ratio at most 3/2–1/2m form≥3 machines. Moreover, for the casem=2 we construct a fully polynomial time approximation scheme.  相似文献

Algorithms for a Class of Isotonic Regression Problems   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The isotonic regression problem has applications in statistics, operations research, and image processing. In this paper a general framework for the isotonic regression algorithm is proposed. Under this framework, we discuss the isotonic regression problem in the case where the directed graph specifying the order restriction is a directed tree with n vertices. A new algorithm is presented for this case, which can be regarded as a generalization of the PAV algorithm of Ayer et al. Using a simple tree structure such as the binomial heap, the algorithm can be implemented in O(n log n) time, improving the previously best known O(n 2 ) time algorithm. We also present linear time algorithms for special cases where the directed graph is a path or a star. Received September 2, 1997; revised January 2, 1998, and February 16, 1998.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the problem of scheduling a set of jobs on a set of identical parallel machines. Before the processing of a job can start, a setup is required which has to be performed by a given set of servers. We consider the complexity of such problems for the minimization of the makespan. For the problem with equal processing times and equal setup times we give a polynomial algorithm. For the problem with unit setup times, m machines and m − 1 servers, we give a pseudopolynomial algorithm. However, the problem with fixed number of machines and servers in the case of minimizing maximum lateness is proven to be unary NP-hard. In addition, recent algorithms for some parallel machine scheduling problems with constant precessing times are generalized to the corresponding server problems for the case of constant setup times. Moreover, we perform a worst case analysis of two list scheduling algorithms for makespan minimization.  相似文献
