For an effective and efficient application of machining processes it is often necessary to consider more than one machining performance characteristics for the selection of optimal machining parameters. This implies the need to formulate and solve multi-objective optimization problems. In recent years, there has been an increasing trend of using meta-heuristic algorithms for solving multi-objective machining optimization problems. Although having the ability to efficiently handle highly non-linear, multi-dimensional and multi-modal optimization problems, meta-heuristic algorithms are plagued by numerous limitations as a consequence of their stochastic nature. To overcome some of these limitations in the machining optimization domain, a software prototype for solving multi-objective machining optimization problems was developed. The core of the developed software prototype is an algorithm based on exhaustive iterative search which guarantees the optimality of a determined solution in a given discrete search space. This approach is justified by a continual increase in computing power and memory size in recent years. To analyze the developed software prototype applicability and performance, four case studies dealing with multi-objective optimization problems of non-conventional machining processes were considered. Case studies are selected to cover different formulations of multi-objective optimization problems: optimization of one objective function while all the other are converted into constraints, optimization of a utility function which combines all objective functions and determination of a set of Pareto optimal solutions. In each case study optimization solutions that had been determined by past researchers using meta-heuristic algorithms were improved by using the developed software prototype.  相似文献

This paper addresses multi-objective optimization and the truss optimization problem employing a novel meta-heuristic that is based on the real-world water cycle behavior in rivers, rainfalls, streams, etc. This meta-heuristic is called multi-objective water cycle algorithm (MOWCA) which is receiving great attention from researchers due to the good performance in handling optimization problems in different fields. Additionally, the hyperbolic spiral movement is integrated into the basic MOWCA to guide the agents throughout the search space. Consequently, under this hyperbolic spiral movement, the exploitation ability of the proposed MOSWCA is promoted. To assess the robustness and coherence of the MOSWCA, the performance of the proposed MOSWCA is analysed on some multi-objective optimisation benchmark functions; and three truss structure optimization problems. The results obtained by the MOSWCA of all test problems were compared with various multi-objective meta-heuristic algorithms reported in the literature. From the empirical results, it is evident that the suggested approach reaches an excellent performance when solving multi-objective optimization and the truss optimization problems.

Selection of optimum machining parameters is vital to the machining processes in order to ensure the quality of the product, reduce the machining cost, increasing the productivity and conserve resources for sustainability. Hence, in this work a posteriori multi-objective optimization algorithm named as Non-dominated Sorting Teaching–Learning-Based Optimization (NSTLBO) is applied to solve the multi-objective optimization problems of three machining processes namely, turning, wire-electric-discharge machining and laser cutting process and two micro-machining processes namely, focused ion beam micro-milling and micro wire-electric-discharge machining. The NSTLBO algorithm is incorporated with non-dominated sorting approach and crowding distance computation mechanism to maintain a diverse set of solutions in order to provide a Pareto-optimal set of solutions in a single simulation run. The results of the NSTLBO algorithm are compared with the results obtained using GA, NSGA-II, PSO, iterative search method and MOTLBO and are found to be competitive. The Pareto-optimal set of solutions for each optimization problem is obtained and reported. These Pareto-optimal set of solutions will help the decision maker in volatile scenarios and are useful for real production systems.  相似文献

Most of the research in multi-objective scheduling optimization uses the classical weighted arithmetic mean operator to aggregate the various optimization criteria. However, there are scheduling problems where criteria are considered interact and thus a different operator should be adopted. This paper is devoted to the search of Pareto-optimal solutions in a tri-criterion flow-shop scheduling problem (FSSP) considering the interactions among the objectives. A new hybrid meta-heuristic is proposed to solve the problem which combines a genetic algorithm (GA) for solutions evolution and a reduced variable neighborhood search (RVNS) technique for fast solution improvement. To deal with the interactions among the three criteria the discrete Choquet integral method is adopted as a means to aggregate the criteria in the fitness function of each individual solution. Experimental comparisons (over public available FSSP test instances) with five existing multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (including the well known SPEA2 and NSGAII algorithms as well as the recently published L-NSGA algorithm) showed a superior performance for the developed approach in terms of diversity and domination of solutions.  相似文献

Solving reliability and redundancy allocation problems via meta-heuristic algorithms has attracted increasing attention in recent years. In this study, a recently developed meta-heuristic optimization algorithm cuckoo search (CS) is hybridized with well-known genetic algorithm (GA) called CS–GA is proposed to solve the reliability and redundancy allocation problem. By embedding the genetic operators in standard CS, the balance between the exploration and exploitation ability further improved and more search space are observed during the algorithms’ performance. The computational results carried out on four classical reliability–redundancy allocation problems taken from the literature confirm the validity of the proposed algorithm. Experimental results are presented and compared with the best known solutions. The comparison results with other evolutionary optimization methods demonstrate that the proposed CS–GA algorithm proves to be extremely effective and efficient at locating optimal solutions.  相似文献

Intelligent traffic control systems optimized using meta-heuristic algorithms can greatly alleviate traffic congestions in urban areas. Meta-heuristics are broadly used as efficient approaches for complex optimization problems. Comparing the performance of optimization methods on different applications is a way to evaluate their effectiveness. The current literature lacks studies on how performance of traffic signal controllers is affected by utilized optimization algorithms. This paper evaluates the performance of three meta-heuristic optimization methods on an advanced interval type-2 adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (IT2ANFIS)-based controller for complex road networks. Simulated annealing (SA), genetic algorithm (GA), and the cuckoo search (CS) are applied for optimal tuning of IT2ANFIS controller. Optimizations methods adjust the parameters in a way to reduce the total travel time of vehicles in the road network. Paramics is used to design and simulate urban traffic network models and implement proposed timing controllers. Comprehensive simulation and performance evaluation are done for both single and multi-intersection traffic networks. Obtained results reveal significant superiority of IT2ANFIS trained using CS method over other controllers. The average performance of the CS-IT2ANFIS is about 31% better than the benchmark fixed-time controllers. This is 17% and only 3% for GA-IT2ANFIS and SA-IT2ANFIS controllers respectively.  相似文献

Flexible job-shop scheduling problem (FJSP) is an extension of the classical job-shop scheduling problem. Although the traditional optimization algorithms could obtain preferable results in solving the mono-objective FJSP. However, they are very difficult to solve multi-objective FJSP very well. In this paper, a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm and a tabu search (TS) algorithm are combined to solve the multi-objective FJSP with several conflicting and incommensurable objectives. PSO which integrates local search and global search scheme possesses high search efficiency. And, TS is a meta-heuristic which is designed for finding a near optimal solution of combinatorial optimization problems. Through reasonably hybridizing the two optimization algorithms, an effective hybrid approach for the multi-objective FJSP has been proposed. The computational results have proved that the proposed hybrid algorithm is an efficient and effective approach to solve the multi-objective FJSP, especially for the problems on a large scale.  相似文献

Advances in processing capacity, coupled with the desire to tackle problems where a human subjective judgment plays an important role in determining the value of a proposed solution, has led to a dramatic rise in the number of applications of Interactive Artificial Intelligence. Of particular note is the coupling of meta-heuristic search engines with user-provided evaluation and rating of solutions, usually in the form of Interactive Evolutionary Algorithms (IEAs). These have a well-documented history of successes, but arguably the preponderance of IEAs stems from this history, rather than as a conscious design choice of meta-heuristic based on the characteristics of the problem at hand. This paper sets out to examine the basis for that assumption, taking as a case study the domain of interactive software design. We consider a range of factors that should affect the design choice including ease of use, scalability, and of course, performance, i.e. that ability to generate good solutions within the limited number of evaluations available in interactive work before humans lose focus. We then evaluate three methods, namely greedy local search, an evolutionary algorithm and ant colony optimization (ACO), with a variety of representations for candidate solutions. Results show that after suitable parameter tuning, ACO is highly effective within interactive search and out-performs evolutionary algorithms with respect to increasing numbers of attributes and methods in the software design problem. However, when larger numbers of classes are present in the software design, an evolutionary algorithm using a naïve grouping integer-based representation appears more scalable.  相似文献

Evolutionary multi-objective optimization algorithms are generally employed to generate Pareto optimal solutions by exploring the search space. To enhance the performance, exploration by global search can be complemented with exploitation by combining it with local search. In this paper, we address the issues in integrating local search with global search such as: how to select individuals for local search; how deep the local search is performed; how to combine multiple objectives into single objective for local search. We introduce a Preferential Local Search mechanism to fine tune the global optimal solutions further and an adaptive weight mechanism for combining multi-objectives together. These ideas have been integrated into NSGA-II to arrive at a new memetic algorithm for solving multi-objective optimization problems. The proposed algorithm has been applied on a set of constrained and unconstrained multi-objective benchmark test suite. The performance was analyzed by computing different metrics such as Generational distance, Spread, Max spread, and HyperVolume Ratio for the test suite functions. Statistical test applied on the results obtained suggests that the proposed algorithm outperforms the state-of-art multi-objective algorithms like NSGA-II and SPEA2. To study the performance of our algorithm on a real-world application, Economic Emission Load Dispatch was also taken up for validation. The performance was studied with the help of measures such as Hypervolume and Set Coverage Metrics. Experimental results substantiate that our algorithm has the capability to solve real-world problems like Economic Emission Load Dispatch and is able to produce better solutions, when compared with NSGA-II, SPEA2, and traditional memetic algorithms with fixed local search steps.  相似文献

There are a number of algorithms for the solution of continuous optimization problems. However, many practical design optimization problems use integer design variables instead of continuous. These types of problems cannot be handled by using continuous design variables-based algorithms. In this paper, we present a multi-objective integer melody search optimization algorithm (MO-IMS) for solving multi-objective integer optimization problems, which take design variables as integers. The proposed algorithm is a modified version of single-objective melody search (MS) algorithm, which is an innovative optimization algorithm, inspired by basic concepts applied in harmony search (HS) algorithm. Results show that MO-IMS has better performance in solving multi-objective integer problems than the existing multi-objective integer harmony search algorithm (MO-IHS). Performance of proposed algorithm is evaluated by using various performance metrics on test functions. The simulation results show that the proposed MO-IMS can be a better technique for solving multi-objective problems having integer decision variables.  相似文献

Most current evolutionary multi-objective optimization (EMO) algorithms perform well on multi-objective optimization problems without constraints, but they encounter difficulties in their ability for constrained multi-objective optimization problems (CMOPs) with low feasible ratio. To tackle this problem, this paper proposes a multi-objective differential evolutionary algorithm named MODE-SaE based on an improved epsilon constraint-handling method. Firstly, MODE-SaE self-adaptively adjusts the epsilon level in line with the maximum and minimum constraint violation values of infeasible individuals. It can prevent epsilon level setting from being unreasonable. Then, the feasible solutions are saved to the external archive and take part in the population evolution by a co-evolution strategy. Finally, MODE-SaE switches the global search and local search by self-switching parameters of search engine to balance the convergence and distribution. With the aim of evaluating the performance of MODE-SaE, a real-world problem with low feasible ratio in decision space and fourteen bench-mark test problems, are used to test MODE-SaE and five other state-of-the-art constrained multi-objective evolution algorithms. The experimental results fully demonstrate the superiority of MODE-SaE on all mentioned test problems, which indicates the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm for CMOPs which have low feasible ratio in search space.  相似文献

Structural optimization with frequency constraints is a challenging class of optimization problems characterized by highly non-linear and non-convex search spaces. When using a meta-heuristic algorithm to solve a problem of this kind, exploration/exploitation balance is a key feature to control the performance of the algorithm. An excessively exploitative algorithm might focus on certain areas of the search space ignoring the others. On the other hand, an algorithm that is too explorative overlooks high quality solutions as a result of not performing adequate local search. This paper compares nine multi-agent meta-heuristic algorithms for sizing and layout optimization of truss structures with frequency constraints. The variation of the diversity index during the optimization history is analyzed in order to inspect exploration/exploitation properties of each algorithm. It appears that there is a significant relationship between the algorithm efficiency and the evolution of the diversity index.  相似文献

The problem in software cost estimation revolves around accuracy. To improve the accuracy, heuristic/meta-heuristic algorithms have been known to yield better results when it is applied in the domain of software cost estimation. For the sake of accuracy in results, we are still modifying these algorithms. Here we have proposed a new meta-heuristic algorithm based on Differential Evolution (DE) by Homeostasis mutation operator. Software development requires high prediction and low Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) and mean magnitude relative error(MMRE). The problem in software cost estimation relates to accurate prediction and minimization of RMSE and MMRE, which are used to solve multiobjective optimization. Many versions of DE were proposed, however multi-objective versions where the concept of Pareto optimality is used, are most popular. Pareto-Based Differential Evolution (PBDE) is one of them. Although the performance of this algorithm is very good, its convergence rate can be further improved by minimizing the time complexity of nondominated sorting, and by improving the diversity of solutions. This has been implemented by using efficient nondominated algorithm whose time complexity is better than the previous one and a new mutation scheme is implemented in DE which can provide more diversity among solutions. The proposed variant multiplies the Homeostasis value with one more vector, named the Homeostasis mutation vector, in the existing mutation vector to provide more bandwidth for selecting effective mutant solutions. The proposed approach provides more promising solutions to guide the evolution and helps DE escape the situation of stagnation. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated on twelve benchmark test functions (bi-objective and tri-objective) on the Pareto-optimal front. The performance of the proposed algorithm is compared with other state-of-the-art algorithms on five multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs). The result verifies that our proposed Homeostasis mutation strategy performs better than other state-of-the-art algorithms. Finally, application of MODE-HBM is applied to solve in terms of Pareto front, representing the trade-off between development RMSE, MMRE, and prediction for COCOMO model.  相似文献

Using multiple local evolutionary searches, instead of single and overall search, has been an effective technique to solve multi-objective optimization problems (MOPs). With this technique, many parallel and distributed multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (dMOEAs) on different island models have been proposed to search for optimal solutions, efficiently and effectively. These algorithms often use local MOEAs on their islands in which each local search is considered to find a part of optimal solutions. The islands (and the local MOEAs), however, need to communicate to each other to preclude the possibility of converging to local optimal solutions. The existing dMOEAs rely on the central and iterative process of subdividing a large-scale population into multiple subpopulations; and it negatively affects the dMOEAs performance. In this paper, a new version of dMOEA with new local MOEAs and migration strategy is proposed. The respective objective space is first subdivided into the predefined number of polar-based regions assigned to the local MOEAs to be explored and exploited. In addition, the central and iterative process is eliminated using a new proposed migration strategy. The algorithms are tested on the standard bi-objective optimization test cases of ZDTs, and the result shows that these new dMOEAs outperform the existing distributed and parallel MOEAs in most cases.  相似文献

This paper presents a new hybrid optimization approach based on immune algorithm and hill climbing local search algorithm. The purpose of the present research is to develop a new optimization approach for solving design and manufacturing optimization problems. This research is the first application of immune algorithm to the optimization of machining parameters in the literature. In order to evaluate the proposed optimization approach, single objective test problem, multi-objective I-beam and machine-tool optimization problems taken from the literature are solved. Finally, the hybrid approach is applied to a case study for milling operations to show its effectiveness in machining operations. The results of the hybrid approach for the case study are compared with those of genetic algorithm, the feasible direction method and handbook recommendation.  相似文献

Harmony search is an emerging meta-heuristic optimization algorithm that is inspired by musical improvisation processes, and it can solve various optimization problems. Membrane computing is a distributed and parallel model for solving hard optimization problems. First, we employed some previously proposed approaches to improve standard harmony search by allowing its parameters to be adaptive during the processing steps. Information from the best solutions was used to improve the speed of convergence while preventing premature convergence to a local minimum. Second, we introduced a parallel framework based on membrane computing to improve the harmony search. Our approach utilized the parallel membrane computing model to execute parallelized harmony search efficiently on different cores, where the membrane computing communication characteristics were used to exchange information between the solutions on different cores, thereby increasing the diversity of harmony search and improving the performance of harmony search. Our simulation results showed that the application of the proposed approach to different variants of harmony search yielded better performance than previous approaches. Furthermore, we applied the parallel membrane inspired harmony search to the flexible job shop scheduling problem. Experiments using well-known benchmark instances showed the effectiveness of the algorithm.  相似文献

In recent years, the historical data during the search process of evolutionary algorithms has received increasing attention from many researchers, and some hybrid evolutionary algorithms with machine-learning have been proposed. However, the majority of the literature is centered on continuous problems with a single optimization objective. There are still a lot of problems to be handled for multi-objective combinatorial optimization problems. Therefore, this paper proposes a machine-learning based multi-objective memetic algorithm (ML-MOMA) for the discrete permutation flowshop scheduling problem. There are two main features in the proposed ML-MOMA. First, each solution is assigned with an individual archive to store the non-dominated solutions found by it and based on these individual archives a new population update method is presented. Second, an adaptive multi-objective local search is developed, in which the analysis of historical data accumulated during the search process is used to adaptively determine which non-dominated solutions should be selected for local search and how the local search should be applied. Computational results based on benchmark problems show that the cooperation of the above two features can help to achieve a balance between evolutionary global search and local search. In addition, many of the best known Pareto fronts for these benchmark problems in the literature can be improved by the proposed ML-MOMA.  相似文献

The difficulties associated with using classical mathematical programming methods on complex optimization problems have contributed to the development of alternative and efficient numerical approaches. Recently, to overcome the limitations of classical optimization methods, researchers have proposed a wide variety of meta-heuristics for searching near-optimum solutions to problems. Among the existing meta-heuristic algorithms, a relatively new optimization paradigm is the Shuffled Complex Evolution at the University of Arizona (SCE-UA) which is a global optimization strategy that combines concepts of the competition evolution theory, downhill simplex procedure of Nelder-Mead, controlled random search and complex shuffling. In an attempt to reduce processing time and improve the quality of solutions, particularly to avoid being trapped in local optima, in this paper is proposed a hybrid SCE-UA approach. The proposed hybrid algorithm is the combination of SCE-UA (without Nelder-Mead downhill simplex procedure) and a pattern search approach, called SCE-PS, for unconstrained optimization. Pattern search methods are derivative-free, meaning that they do not use explicit or approximate derivatives. Moreover, pattern search algorithms are direct search methods well suitable for the global optimization of highly nonlinear, multiparameter, and multimodal objective functions. The proposed SCE-PS method is tested with six benchmark optimization problems. Simulation results show that the proposed SCE-PS improves the searching performance when compared with the classical SCE-UA and a genetic algorithm with floating-point representation for all the tested problems. As evidenced by the performance indices based on the mean performance of objective function in 30 runs and mean of computational time, the SCE-PS algorithm has demonstrated to be effective and efficient at locating best-practice optimal solutions for unconstrained optimization.  相似文献
