Computational Intelligence and Games： Challenges and Opportunities

The last few decades have seen a phenomenal increase in the quality, diversity and pervasiveness of computer games. The worldwide computer games market is estimated to be worth around USD 21bn annually, and is predicted to continue to grow rapidly. This paper reviews some of the recent developments in applying computational intelligence （CI） methods to games, points out some of the potential pitfalls, and suggests some fruitful directions for future research.     

Quantum computing and communications – Introduction and challenges

Computer engineers are continuously seeking new solutions to increase available processing speed, achievable transmission rates, and efficiency in order to satisfy users’ expectations. While multi-core systems, computing clouds, and other parallel processing techniques dominate current technology trends, elementary particles governed by quantum mechanics have been borrowed from the physicists’ laboratory and applied to computer engineering in the efforts to solve sophisticated computing and communications problems. In this paper, we review the quantum mechanical background of quantum computing from an engineering point of view and describe the possibilities offered by quantum-assisted and quantum-based computing and communications. In addition to the currently available solutions, the corresponding challenges will also be surveyed.

Methods and apparatuses for providing cryptographic assurance based on ranges as to whether a particular data item is on a list. According to one computer-implemented method, the items on the list are sorted and ranges are derived from adjacent pairs of data items on the list. Möbius-invariant curve and surface energies and their applications

The sphere is a natural and seamless parametric domain for closed genus-0 surfaces. We introduce an efficient hierarchical optimization approach for the computation of spherical parametrization for closed genus-0 surfaces by minimizing a nonlinear energy balancing angle and area distortions. The mapping results are bijective and lowly distorted. Our algorithm converges efficiently and is suitable to manipulate large-scale geometric models. We demonstrate and analyze the effectiveness of our mapping in spherical harmonics decomposition.     

Model and procedure for performance and availability-wise parallel warehouses

Consider data warehouses as large data repositories queried for analysis and data mining in a variety of application contexts. A query over such data may take a large amount of time to be processed in a regular PC. Consider partitioning the data into a set of PCs (nodes), with either a parallel database server or any database server at each node and an engine-independent middleware. Nodes and network may even not be fully dedicated to the data warehouse. In such a scenario, care must be taken for handling processing heterogeneity and availability, so we study and propose efficient solutions for this. We concentrate on three main contributions: a performance-wise index, measuring relative performance; a replication-degree; a flexible chunk-wise organization with on-demand processing. These contributions extend the previous work on de-clustering and replication and are generic in the sense that they can be applied in very different contexts and with different data partitioning approaches. We evaluate their merits with a prototype implementation of the system.     

State of the Art and Emerging Trends in Operations and Maintenance of Offshore Oil and Gas Production Facilities： Some Experiences and Observations

Plant maintenance has been a discipline that has gradually evolved with the industrial revolution. For quite some time, it has been a ``necessary evil' in production, manufacturing, and process settings. The changing business needs and industrial conditions have had various impacts on the maintenance process, particularly over the last few years. While some industries have inherent difficulties seeing what maintenance is all about, others have begun to add more flavor to the organizational maintenance practices. This article brings an overview of developments within the offshore oil and gas production sector.     

Mbius-invariant curve and surface energies and their applications

Curvature-based surface energies are frequently used in mathematics, physics, thin plate and shell engineering, and membrane chemistry and biology studies. Invariance under rotations and shifts makes curvature-based energies very attractive for modeling various phenomena. In computer-aided geometric design, the Willmore surfaces and the so-called minimum variation surfaces （MVS） are widely used for shape modeling purposes. The Willmore surfaces are invariant w.r.t conformal transformations （Mbius or conformal invariance）, and studied thoroughly in differential geometry and related disciplines. In contrast, the minimum variation surfaces are not conformal invariant. In this paper, we suggest a simple modification of the minimum variation energy and demonstrate that the resulting modified MVS enjoy Mbius invariance （so we call them conformal-invariant MVS or, shortly, CI-MVS）. We also study connections of CI-MVS with the cyclides of Dupin. In addition, we consider several other conformal-invariant curve and surface energies involving curvatures and curvature derivatives. In particular, we show how filtering with a conformal-invariant curve energy can be used for detecting salient subsets of the principal curvature extremum curves used by Hosaka and co-workers for shape quality inspection purposes.     

Sleep schedules and peak times of oral temperature and alertness in morning and evening ‘types’

Abstract

The relation between circadian variables (oral temperature and subjective alertness) and sleep-awake schedules was explored as a function of a subjective preference index (Home and Ostberg 1976) which classifies subjects as ’morning’ or ‘evening’ type. Measurements of oral temperature and self-assessed alertness were obtained every 3 hours from rising time to bedtime over a 2 week period in 49 medical students. Sleep logs were kept by the students during the same period. Sleep schedules and alertness peak time, as well as the relative temporal location of alertness peak time and temperature peak time, differed in relation to the Home and Ostberg index. These results suggest that in normal conditions the coupling between temperature circadian rhythm and sleep-awake cycle differs in morning types and evening types.     

Discrimination between crude-oil spills and monomolecular sea slicks by airborne radar and infrared radiometer—possibilities and limitations

Abstract

The applicability of an X-band (9·4 GHz) real aperture radar (RAR) and an infrared (IR) radiometer to discriminate between crude-oil spills and monomolecular sea slicks is investigated over the same sea area. The results from quasi-simultaneous overflights over a crude-oil spill and three different sea slicks (oleyl alcohol, di-(ethylenglycol)-mono-isostearyletherand methyl oleate)show that the advantage of an imaging radar is its uniequi vocal potential for surveying large sea surfaces and that the advantage of an IR sensor is its ability to determinate quickly the thick centres of crude-oil spills. However, neither the RAR nor the IR radiometer can discriminate between crude-oil spills and sea slicks. Therefore, an airborne coastal patrol with the objective of monitoring oil pollution must comprise a package of additional sensors, e.g. a microwave radiometer and/or a lidar system.     

Novel devices and process for 32 nm CMOS technology and beyond

The development of next 32 nm generation and below needs innovations on not only device structures, but also fabrication techniques and material selections. Among those promising technologies, new gate structures as high-κ gate dielectric and metal gate, strain channel carrier mobility enhancement technology, and novel non-planar MOSFET structures are all possible candidate technologies. In this paper, we will specify our discussion on the research progress of high-κ-metal gate and non-planar MOSFET-technologies that are suitable to 32 nm technology node and beyond.
