When it comes to buying expensive goods people expect to be skillfully steered through the options by well-informed sales assistants who are capable of balancing the user’s many and varied requirements. In addition users often need to be educated about the product space, especially if they are to come to understand what is available and why certain options are being recommended by the sales-assistant. It is now well accepted that interactive recommender systems, the on-line equivalent of a sales assistant, also need to educate users about the product space and to justify their recommendations. In this paper we focus on a novel approach to explanation. Instead of attempting to justify a particular recommendation we focus on how certain types of feedback can help users to understand the recommendation opportunities that remain if the current recommendation should not meet their requirements. Specifically, we describe how this approach to explanation is tightly coupled with the generation of compound critiques, which act as a form of feedback for users. Furthermore, we argue that these explanation-rich critiques have the potential to dramatically improve recommender performance and usability.  相似文献

Traditionally, collaborative recommender systems have been based on a single-shot model of recommendation where a single set of recommendations is generated based on a user’s (past) stored preferences. However, content-based recommender system research has begun to look towards more conversational models of recommendation, where the user is actively engaged in directing search at recommendation time. Such interactions can range from high-level dialogues with the user, possibly in natural language, to more simple interactions where the user is, for example, asked to indicate a preference for one of k suggested items. Importantly, the feedback attained from these interactions can help to differentiate between the user’s long-term stored preferences, and her current (short-term) requirements, which may be quite different. We argue that such interactions can also be beneficial to collaborative recommendation and provide experimental evidence to support this claim.  相似文献

With the popularity of social media services, the sheer amount of content is increasing exponentially on the Social Web that leads to attract considerable attention to recommender systems. Recommender systems provide users with recommendations of items suited to their needs. To provide proper recommendations to users, recommender systems require an accurate user model that can reflect a user’s characteristics, preferences and needs. In this study, by leveraging user-generated tags as preference indicators, we propose a new collaborative approach to user modeling that can be exploited to recommender systems. Our approach first discovers relevant and irrelevant topics for users, and then enriches an individual user model with collaboration from other similar users. In order to evaluate the performance of our model, we compare experimental results with a user model based on collaborative filtering approaches and a vector space model. The experimental results have shown the proposed model provides a better representation in user interests and achieves better recommendation results in terms of accuracy and ranking.  相似文献

In recent years recommender systems have become the common tool to handle the information overload problem of educational and informative web sites, content delivery systems, and online shops. Although most recommender systems make suggestions for individual users, in many circumstances the selected items (e.g., movies) are not intended for personal usage but rather for consumption in groups. This paper investigates how effective group recommendations for movies can be generated by combining the group members’ preferences (as expressed by ratings) or by combining the group members’ recommendations. These two grouping strategies, which convert traditional recommendation algorithms into group recommendation algorithms, are combined with five commonly used recommendation algorithms to calculate group recommendations for different group compositions. The group recommendations are not only assessed in terms of accuracy, but also in terms of other qualitative aspects that are important for users such as diversity, coverage, and serendipity. In addition, the paper discusses the influence of the size and composition of the group on the quality of the recommendations. The results show that the grouping strategy which produces the most accurate results depends on the algorithm that is used for generating individual recommendations. Therefore, the paper proposes a combination of grouping strategies which outperforms each individual strategy in terms of accuracy. Besides, the results show that the accuracy of the group recommendations increases as the similarity between members of the group increases. Also the diversity, coverage, and serendipity of the group recommendations are to a large extent dependent on the used grouping strategy and recommendation algorithm. Consequently for (commercial) group recommender systems, the grouping strategy and algorithm have to be chosen carefully in order to optimize the desired quality metrics of the group recommendations. The conclusions of this paper can be used as guidelines for this selection process.  相似文献

The increasing availability of (digital) cultural heritage artefacts offers great potential for increased access to art content, but also necessitates tools to help users deal with such abundance of information. User-adaptive art recommender systems aim to present their users with art content tailored to their interests. These systems try to adapt to the user based on feedback from the user on which artworks he or she finds interesting. Users need to be able to depend on the system to competently adapt to their feedback and find the artworks that are most interesting to them. This paper investigates the influence of transparency on user trust in and acceptance of content-based recommender systems. A between-subject experiment (N = 60) evaluated interaction with three versions of a content-based art recommender in the cultural heritage domain. This recommender system provides users with artworks that are of interest to them, based on their ratings of other artworks. Version 1 was not transparent, version 2 explained to the user why a recommendation had been made and version 3 showed a rating of how certain the system was that a recommendation would be of interest to the user. Results show that explaining to the user why a recommendation was made increased acceptance of the recommendations. Trust in the system itself was not improved by transparency. Showing how certain the system was of a recommendation did not influence trust and acceptance. A number of guidelines for design of recommender systems in the cultural heritage domain have been derived from the study’s results.

Recommender Systems are the set of tools and techniques to provide useful recommendations and suggestions to the users to help them in the decision-making process for choosing the right products or services. The recommender systems tailored to leverage contextual information (such as location, time, companion or such) in the recommendation process are called context-aware recommender systems. This paper presents a review on the continual development of context-aware recommender systems by analyzing different kinds of contexts without limiting to any specific application domain. First, an in-depth analysis is conducted on different recommendation algorithms used in context-aware recommender systems. Then this information is used to find out that how these techniques deals with the curse of dimensionality, which is an inherent issue in such systems. Since contexts are primarily based on users’ activity patterns that leads to the development of personalized recommendation services for the users. Thus, this paper also presents a review on how this contextual information is represented (either explicitly or implicitly) in the recommendation process. We also presented a list of datasets and evaluation metrics used in the setting of CARS. We tried to highlight that how algorithmic approaches used in CARS differ from those of conventional RS. In that, we presented what modification or additions are being applied on the top of conventional recommendation approaches to produce context-aware recommendations. Finally, the outstanding challenges and research opportunities are presented in front of the research community for analysis  相似文献

Despite its success, similarity-based collaborative filtering suffers from some limitations, such as scalability, sparsity and recommendation attack. Prior work has shown incorporating trust mechanism into traditional collaborative filtering recommender systems can improve these limitations. We argue that trust-based recommender systems are facing novel recommendation attack which is different from the profile injection attacks in traditional recommender system. To the best of our knowledge, there has not any prior study on recommendation attack in a trust-based recommender system. We analyze the attack problem, and find that “victim” nodes play a significant role in the attack. Furthermore, we propose a data provenance method to trace malicious users and identify the “victim” nodes as distrust users of recommender system. Feasibility study of the defend method is done with the dataset crawled from Epinions website.  相似文献

In contrast to customers of bricks and mortar stores, users of online selling environments are not supported by human sales experts. In such situations recommender applications help to identify the products and/or services that fit the user’s wishes and needs. In order to successfully apply recommendation technologies we have to develop an in-depth understanding of decision strategies of users. These decision strategies are explained in different models of human decision making. In this paper we provide an overview of selected models and discuss their importance for recommender system development. Furthermore, we provide an outlook on future research issues.  相似文献

Conversational recommender systems guide users through a product space, alternatively making concrete product suggestions and eliciting the user's feedback. Critiquing is a common form of user feedback, where users provide limited feedback at the feature-level by constraining a feature's value-space. For example, a user may request a cheaper product, thus critiquing the price feature. Usually, when critiquing is used in conversational recommender systems, there is little or no attempt to monitor successive critiques within a given recommendation session. In our experience this can lead to inefficiencies on the part of the recommender system, and confusion on the part of the user. In this paper we describe an approach to critiquing that attempts to consider a user's critiquing history, as well as their current critique, when making new recommendations. We provide experimental evidence to show that this has the potential to significantly improve recommendation efficiency.  相似文献
