This research evaluated Hong Kong Chinese and Korean comprehension of American security safety symbols, and how successfully they could guess the meaning of the symbols in relation to their ratings of the appropriateness of the design of each of the symbols. Symbol comprehension scores, symbol guessing scores, design appropriateness ratings, and demographic information were obtained for 81 Hong Kong Chinese and 60 Koreans. For all the symbols tested, comprehension scores for the Hong Kong Chinese and Koreans were much lower than for Americans. The finding that Americans were better at interpreting American symbols than Hong Kong Chinese and Koreans indicates that problems are likely to arise if such symbols are used by non-Americans. Gender did not affect guessing performance, and success at guessing symbols was not related to the subjective ratings of design appropriateness for the symbols. The findings here reveal the importance of developing security safety symbols with the end users in mind.
Relevance to industry
Designing effective pictorial security safety symbols to cover the many potential situations and scenarios for a specific population is a difficult business. The findings of this study underline the importance of developing security safety symbols with the end users in mind. A dialogical, constructivist view of interaction processes permits theorizing the role of digital tools, seen as sociotechnical devices that serve both as resources and as sources of communication within our organizations.

Computer games fundamentally incorporate composition into their game play. Highly symbolic constructs, whose photo-realistic graphical environments are often produced by combining pre-existing elements, computer games not only require players to read and to make meaning of symbols presented on the screen but to write and ultimately to revise their actions in the game relationship to these symbols. This activity, which is often constructed as “play” rather than writing, is significant in that, although its effects appear to be limited to the conversations taking place on the screen, its focus is ultimately on how players read and write (compose) themselves in relationship to the game and to the larger socio-political structures upon which the game is beholden. Computer games thus have the potential to help students not only understand the fundamentals of the compositional process and the larger socio-political structures within which this process occurs but to recognize how these socio-political structures construct reading and writing and in doing so determine the way that the individuals subject to them construct (read and write) themselves. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different loading symbols and loading durations on online video viewers’ perception of waiting time. Sixty young adults participated in this study and their subjective ratings on waiting time perception for forty-eight different loading symbols (4 progress functions × 2 shapes × 2 embellishments × 3 durations) were obtained through a 7-point Likert scale. Each participant chose the best loading symbols in terms of waiting time perception at the end of the experiment. Results showed that duration and the progress function practically affect the viewers’ waiting time perception, and shape and embellishment do not. Loading symbols of power and inverse power progress functions are perceived as shorter than those of the repetitive and linear progress functions. It is recommended to show loading progress and use manipulated progress functions, and design factors such as shape and embellishment are considered to be less important for designing a better loading symbol. The findings of this study may serve as a useful input for video service providers and symbol designers in creating shortly perceived loading symbols. 相似文献

Three high-dimensional glyphs for viewing software project management data assist in perhaps the most challenging engineering task in modern times managing large software projects. In data exploration, glyphs refer to graphical objects or symbols that represent data through visual parameters that are either spatial (positions x or y), retinal (color and size), or temporal. Common examples of graphical objects include the bars in a bar chart or the points within a scatter plot. We focus on glyphs for visualizing software project management data. Any large-scale project will have many different classes of resources (lab equipment, staff time, machine cycles, disk resources, interim deliverables, and customer commitments) that must be scheduled and tracked. Inevitably, problems will arise and solutions must be found. To support the management process, information systems collect and maintain large status databases. We aim to support and improve the understanding of this information through visualization. Recognition and integration of 2D architectural drawings provide a sound basis for automatically evaluating building designs,
simulating safety, estimating construction cost or planning construction sequences. To accomplish these targets, difficulties
come from (1) an architectural project is usually composed of a series of related drawings, (2) 3D information of structural
objects may be expressed in 2D drawings, annotations, tables, or the composites of above expressions, and (3) a large number
of disturbing graphical primitives in architectural drawings complicate the recognition processes. In this paper, we propose
