The aim of image denoising is to recover a visually accepted image from its noisy observation with as much detail as possible. The noise exists in computed tomography images due to hardware errors, software faults and/or low radiation dose. Because of noise, the analysis and extraction of accurate medical information is a challenging task for specialists. Therefore, a novel modification on the total variational denoising algorithm is proposed in this article to attenuate the noise from CT images and provide a better visual quality. The newly developed algorithm can properly detect noise from the other image components using four new noise distinguishing coefficients and reduce it using a novel minimization function. Moreover, the proposed algorithm has a fast computation speed, a simple structure, a relatively low computational cost and preserves the small image details while reducing the noise efficiently. Evaluating the performance of the proposed algorithm is achieved through the use of synthetic and real noisy images. Likewise, the synthetic images are appraised by three advanced accuracy methods –Gradient Magnitude Similarity Deviation (GMSD), Structural Similarity (SSIM) and Weighted Signal‐to‐Noise Ratio (WSNR). The empirical results exhibited significant improvement not only in noise reduction but also in preserving the minor image details. Finally, the proposed algorithm provided satisfying results that outperformed all the comparative methods.

Graph filtering, which is founded on the theory of graph signal processing, is proved as a useful tool for image denoising. Most graph filtering methods focus on learning an ideal lowpass filter to remove noise, where clean images are restored from noisy ones by retaining the image components in low graph frequency bands. However, this lowpass filter has limited ability to separate the low-frequency noise from clean images such that it makes the denoising procedure less effective. To address this issue, we propose an adaptive weighted graph filtering (AWGF) method to replace the design of traditional ideal lowpass filter. In detail, we reassess the existing low-rank denoising method with adaptive regularizer learning (ARLLR) from the view of graph filtering. A shrinkage approach subsequently is presented on the graph frequency domain, where the components of noisy image are adaptively decreased in each band by calculating their component significances. As a result, it makes the proposed graph filtering more explainable and suitable for denoising. Meanwhile, we demonstrate a graph filter under the constraint of subspace representation is employed in the ARLLR method. Therefore, ARLLR can be treated as a special form of graph filtering. It not only enriches the theory of graph filtering, but also builds a bridge from the low-rank methods to the graph filtering methods. In the experiments, we perform the AWGF method with a graph filter generated by the classical graph Laplacian matrix. The results show our method can achieve a comparable denoising performance with several state-of-the-art denoising methods.

Mammography is the most effective method for the early detection of breast diseases. However, the typical diagnostic signs such as microcalcifications and masses are difficult to detect because mammograms are low-contrast and noisy images. In this paper, a novel algorithm for image denoising and enhancement based on dyadic wavelet processing is proposed. The denoising phase is based on a local iterative noise variance estimation. Moreover, in the case of microcalcifications, we propose an adaptive tuning of enhancement degree at different wavelet scales, whereas in the case of mass detection, we developed a new segmentation method combining dyadic wavelet information with mathematical morphology. The innovative approach consists of using the same algorithmic core for processing images to detect both microcalcifications and masses. The proposed algorithm has been tested on a large number of clinical images, comparing the results with those obtained by several other algorithms proposed in the literature through both analytical indexes and the opinions of radiologists. Through preliminary tests, the method seems to meaningfully improve the diagnosis in the early breast cancer detection with respect to other approaches.

Source images are frequently corrupted by noise before fusion, which will lead to the quality decline of fused image and the inconvenience for subsequent observation. However, at present, most of the traditional medical image fusion scheme cannot be implemented in noisy environment. Besides, the existing fusion methods scarcely make full use of the dependencies between source images. In this research, a novel fusion algorithm based on the statistical properties of wavelet coefficients is proposed, which incorporates fusion and denoising simultaneously. In the proposed algorithm, the new saliency and matching measures are defined by two distributions: the marginal statistical distribution of single wavelet coefficient fit by the generalized Gaussian Distribution and joint distribution of dual source wavelet coefficients modeled by the anisotropic bivariate Laplacian model. Additionally, the bivariate shrinkage is introduced to develop a noise robust fusion method, and a moment-based parameter estimation applied in the fusion scheme is also exploited in denoising method, which allows to achieve the consistency of fusion and denoising. The experiments demonstrate that the proposed algorithm performs very well on both noisy and noise-free images from multimodal medical datasets (computerized tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, magnetic resonance angiography, etc.), outperforming the conventional methods in terms of both fusion quality and noise reduction.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images are frequently sensitive to certain types of noises and artifacts. The denoising of MRI images is essential for improving visual quality and reliability of the quantitative analysis of diagnosis and treatment. In this article, a new block difference-based filtering method is proposed to denoise the MRI images. First, the normal MRI image is degraded by a certain percentage of noise. The block difference between the intensity of the normal and noisy MRI is computed, and then it is compared with the intensity of the blocks of the normal MRI image. Based on the comparison, the pixel weights are updated to each block of the denoised MRI image. Observational results are brought out on the BrainWeb and BraTS datasets and evaluated by performance metrics such as peak signal-to-noise ratio, structural similarity index measures, universal quality index, and root mean square error. The proposed method outperforms the existing denoising filtering techniques.

Medical image processing is typically performed to diagnose a patient's brain tumor prior to surgery. In this study, a technique in denoising and segmentation was developed to improve medical image processing. The proposed approach employs multiple modules. In the first module, the noisy brain tumor image is transformed into multiple low- and high-pass tetrolet coefficients. In the second module, multiple low-pass tetrolet coefficients are applied through a modified transform-based gamma correction method. Generalized cross-validation is used on multiple high-pass tetrolet coefficients to obtain the best threshold value. In the third module, all enhanced coefficients are applied to the partial differential equation method. In the final module, the denoised image is applied to Atanassov's intuitionistic fuzzy set histon-based fuzzy clustering method with centroid optimization using an elephant herding method. Accordingly, the tumor part is segmented from the nontumor part in the magnetic resonance imaging brain images. The method was assessed in terms of peak signal-to-noise ratio, mean square error, specificity, sensitivity, and accuracy. The experimental results showed that the suggested method is superior to traditional methods.

At present, digital image processing plays a vital role in medical imaging areas and specifically in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of brain images such as axial and coronal sections. This article mainly focused on the MRI brain images. The existing methods such as total variation (MC), parallel MRI, modified pyramidal dual-tree direction filter, adaptive dictionary selection algorithm, classifier methods, and fuzzy clustering techniques are poor in image eminence and precision. Thus, this article presents a novel approach consisting of denoising followed by segmentation. The objective of these proposed methods was visual eminence improvement of medical images to examine tumor extent using an adaptive partial differential equation (APDE)-based analysis with soft threshold function in denoising. The fourth order, nonlinear APDE was used to denoise the image depending on gradient and Laplacian operators associated with the new adaptive Haar-type wavelet transform. A second approach was the new convergent K-means clustering for segmentation. The convergent K-means procedure diminishes the summation of the squared deviations of structures in a cluster from the center. The significance of these proposed methods was to compute their performances in terms of mean squared error, peak signal-to-noise ratio, structure similarity, segmentation accuracy, false hit, missed-term, and elapsed time. The results were analyzed with the MATLAB software.

Abstract

Image fusion is a challenging area of research with a variety of applications. The process of image fusion collects information from different sources and combines them in a single composite image. The composite fused image can better describe the scene than any of the source images. In this paper, we have proposed a method for noisy image fusion in contourlet domain. The proposed method works equally well for fusion of noise free images. Contourlet transform is a multiscale, multidirectional transform with various aspect ratios. These properties make it more suitable for image fusion than other conventional transforms. In the proposed work, the fusion algorithm is combined with a denoising algorithm to reverse the effect of noise. In the proposed method, we have used a level dependent threshold that is based on standard deviation of contourlet coefficients, mean and median of the absolute contourlet coefficients. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method performs well in the presence of different types of noise. Performance of the proposed method is compared with principal components analysis and sharp fusion based methods as well as other fusion methods based on variants of wavelet transform like dual tree complex wavelet transform, discrete wavelet transform, lifting wavelet transform, multiwavelet transform, stationary wavelet transform and pyramid transform using six standard quantitative quality metrics (entropy, standard deviation, edge strength, fusion factor, sharpness and peak signal to noise ratio). The combined qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the experimental results shows that the proposed method performs better than other methods.
